KQED Perks

Join KQED at the Asian Art Museum the weekend of November 8 and 9 to view its newest exhibition, Roads of Arabia: Archaeology and History of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. An enticing look at the ancient past of the Arabian Peninsula, Roads of Arabia features artworks — most of them recently excavated — that trace the impact of historic trade routes and pilgrimage roads. Colossal human statues, Greco-Roman bronzes and pages from early Qur’ans testify to a lively mercantile and cultural exchange among civilizations from antiquity through the early centuries of Islam.

KQED members plus one guest (total of two persons per KQED MemberCard) can enjoy free admission to the Asian Art Museum on November 8 and 9 when they present a valid KQED MemberCard and photo ID at the entrance. The museum is open 10am-5pm. Admission is granted on a first-come, firstserved basis.

Who is the City Arts & Lectures guest on November 2?

The monthly contest especially for On Q readers from The Giveaway — KQED’s blog — offers chances to win prizes, including free tickets to events around the Bay Area. The answer to the monthly question is in On Q. Send your answer to giveaway@kqed.org (please put “On Q” in the subject line) by November 8, 2014, to be entered to win a pair of tickets to hear the San Francisco Symphony perform Brahms’ Joyful Second Symphony, on Sunday, November 30, at 2pm. Finnish conductor Susanna Mälkki and, pianist and MacArthur Fellow Jeremy Denk will join the orchestra for this spectacular Thanksgiving-week program. Digital Health, a company that developed the world’s first FDA-approved ingestible sensor; and Halle Tecco, managing director of Rock Health, a San Francisco firm that invests in innovative health care startups. KQED’s half-hour documentary is part of a new multi-media initiative, also called Future of You, led by KQED Science Senior Editor Andrea Kissack. The project will cover the intersection of medicine, health care and emerging technologies through ongoing radio reports, blog posts and Web features chronicling the stories of patients, caretakers, entrepreneurs, hackers and medical professionals navigating this new connected health era. “This consumer-centric approach could eventually transform health care,” says Andrea. “Although this trend offers a lot of promises, it also raises a lot of questions that we will explore, from privacy issues to a new digital divide.”

A new era in health care is taking off. Spurred by Silicon Valley, new high-tech tools are allowing people to unlock information about their bodies and track everything from sleep to stress — even the bacteria in their guts. It’s part of a growing digital trend that could reshape medical research and forever change our relationship with our doctors. “While working on the documentary Future of You, it became clear to me that the digital disruption that has transformed banking, the music industry and other sectors is finally disrupting health care,” says Sheraz Sadiq, the film’s producer. Sheraz interviewed prominent individuals at the forefront of this digital health movement, including James Park, CEO of Fitbit, the leading manufacturer of activity tracking devices; Dr. Jeffrey Olgin, chief of cardiology at UC San Francisco Medical Center, who is leading the world’s first all-electronic heart disease study using smartphones, apps and wearable devices; Dr. George Savage, chief medical officer of Proteus

Mina Kim — New Friday Forum Host Talking to Mina Kim about her job as KQED Public Radio’s evening new anchor/reporter, it quickly becomes clear that she is passionate about it and appreciates the opportunities she gets to try new things. Just days after our conversation, she was given a new opportunity — to be the host of Friday Forum beginning in late October. “I am so honored to join the Forum team. It’s a show with great people and content. And, best of all, it lets KQED engage directly with listeners on the air in real time.” Although she’s been full time at KQED for five years, Mina’s history with the station goes back to 2004 when she did a brief fellowship with the program Pacific Time, which is no longer in production. The experience hooked her on public radio. “I also learned then that I love being among other journalists and how they challenge each other and offer different perspectives on a story.”

4

Describe a typical workday as evening news anchor. It’s a very structured day because it’s so deadline driven. I have no choice but to go live on the air at 3:57pm. Usually I’m on the phone with the assignments editor by 9:30am, talking about potential two-way topics — the long-form interview we do at 5:30pm that tries to add context to a big news story of the day. My commute from Napa takes about an hour. I get to San Francisco at around 11:30am. From noon until 7pm, practically every

minute of Mina’s time is accounted for — meetings with editors, researching and writing scripts, pre-recording two-way interviews, and prepping for the first newscast at 3:57pm. Then she’s doing live newscasts every half hour until 6:04pm, and one more at 7:04. “In some ways, the anchor job is harder than reporting because you are constantly on deadline,” she notes, “but in other ways it is easier because I always know that unless there’s crazy late-breaking news, I will be home by the same time every evening. I have a three-year-old daughter. Having this routine has helped my family have a normal life.” What do you especially like about your job? I love the variety of story topics. Being a general assignment reporter/host can be a slog. You have to be up on so many topics and issues, but I am enlivened by the variety. Also, I’ve had the chance to take on a variety of roles, like filling in to host Forum, hosting election coverage and other things I’d never done before. Do you have a recent memorable story? One of the stories that I really enjoyed was a collaboration with the Center for Investigative Reporting on abuse of elders by caregivers. It was an incredible experience to help investigate and report on such an important issue.

Education

Arts

KQED Public Radio

This fall, KQED is inaugurating a Web series that seeks to do online what public broadcasting has always done on television: bring the performing arts into people’s homes. The series of short films will launch with dance, drama and music by some of the Bay Area’s most notable performers. Anna Deavere Smith offers emotionally devastating monologues from her work-in-progress tracking what she calls the school-to-prison pipeline of troubled youths enmeshed in the correctional system. Aerial dance troupe Bandaloop (pictured) blends rock-climbing technology with modern-dance grace as they defy gravity on cliffs near Stinson Beach. Dan Hoyle transforms himself into a diverse cast of characters in scenes from his one-man play Each and Every Thing, about his search for an authentic life in the digital age. And Bay Area jazz master Marcus Shelby leads his quintet in a stylish rendition of “Social Call.” “Our goal for these short films is to move and inspire audiences. explains KQED Arts’ managing editor Joe Matazzoni. “Long-term, we aim to tell the story of Bay Area performing arts by amassing a permanent collection of great performances by the artists who make this area so special.” youtube.com/KQEDArts

Funding for KQED Arts is provided by The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation and the California Arts Council. Support is also provided by the members of KQED.

PBS LearningMedia, managed by KQED for the state of California, has launched a new userfriendly website design and a brand-new set of teaching tools. Updates include a lesson builder, storyboard creator and a quiz maker that allows teachers to create their own assignments from more than 87,000 National and Common Core State Standards–aligned resources. Teachers can integrate the content into their curriculum to help their “digital native” students make connections to the topics they are learning in class. Check it out and share with the educators in your life. PBSlearningmedia.org

How does a 16-year-old evolve into a bank robber? In the new film Evolution of a Criminal (coming to KQED in January 2015), filmmaker Darius Clark Monroe explores what led him to pull a heist as a teenager in Texas. Returning to the scene of the crime, he examines how his actions affected the lives of family, friends and victims. Join KQED, Top Ten Social and Darius Monroe for a screening of his film — a gripping blend of documentary, true crime and personal essay. A Q&A with the filmmaker follows. Almost a century ago, paleontologists found the first tantalizing hints of a monster even bigger than Tyrannosaurus Rex, perhaps the largest predator ever to walk the Earth: spectacular fossil bones from a dinosaur dubbed Spinosaurus. But the fossils were completely destroyed during a World War II Allied bombing raid, leaving only drawings, lots of questions and a mystery: What was Spinosaurus? Now, the discovery of new bones in a Moroccan cliff face is reopening the investigation into this epic beast. NOVA “ Bigger Than T. Rex” airs Wednesday, Novemer 5, at 9pm on KQED 9.

Bill Nighy reprises his Golden Globe–nominated role as master spy Johnny Worricker in two new thrillers, written and directed by Sir David Hare. Wrapping up an intricate plot that began with Page Eight in 2011, involving secret crimes and unplumbed depths of political corruption, Masterpiece Contemporary presents “Worricker: Turks and Caicos” followed the following week by “Salting the Battlefield.” Airs Sundays November 9 and 16, at 9pm on KQED 9.
