The two-hour film The Pilgrims will premiere on American Experience Tuesday, November 24, at 8pm on KQED 9.

KQED Public Radio

Arguably one of the most fateful and resonant events of the last half-millennium, the Pilgrims’ journey west across the Atlantic in the early 17th century is a seminal, if often misunderstood episode of American and world history. The Pilgrims, a new film by Ric Burns, narrated by celebrated actor Oliver Platt, endeavors to tell the true story of the Pilgrims, a small group of religious radicals whose determination to establish a separatist religious community planted the seeds for America’s founding. The film explores the forces, circumstances, personalities and events that converged to exile the English group in Holland and eventually propel their crossing to the New World. It’s a story universally familiar in broad outline, but almost entirely unfamiliar to a general audience in its rich and compelling historical actuality. “From childhood on, Americans are taught to think of the voyage of the Mayflower and the coming of the Pilgrims as the true founding moment of America,” says Burns, “and we honor them as such every year on Thanksgiving — even though they came 13 years after the founding of Jamestown in 1607. The real story of the Pilgrims — who they were, what drove them on, what happened to them in the New World, how they succeeded and how they failed, and why we remember them as we do — is far more gripping, poignant, harrowing, strange and revealing than the Thanksgiving myth we think we know.” The Pilgrims features spectacular re-creations of the Mayflower’s harrowing voyage across the Atlantic using the Mayflower II, the only full-scale replica of the Pilgrims’ vessel in existence. Shot in only 90 minutes with three cameras, the film captures one of the rare times that the 60-year-old ship has been out on the open water. It also features a gripping performance by the late actor Roger Rees as William Bradford, the governor of Plymouth Plantation for more than 30 years and writer of the definitive history of the early colony.

Fiery eruptions, titanic floods, the grinding of great ice sheets and massive impacts from space all shaped North America. Now, for the first time, NOVA presents a bold and sweeping 3 billion–year biography of our continent and how it came to be, in an epic new three-hour series. Hosted by renowned paleontologist Kirk Johnson, this spectacular road trip through our continent’s tumultuous past sets out to answer three fundamental questions: How was the continent formed? How did life evolve here? How has its spectacular landscape shaped human lives and destinies? Enhanced by dazzling, hyper-realistic animation, immersive geological field missions and the latest scientific research, “Making North America” reveals the incredible story of a majestic continent. NOVA’s “Making North America” airs on KQED 9 at 9pm on three consecutive Wednesday nights, November 4, 11, and 18.

Across our planet there are a handful of places that truly astonish: Mount Everest, the Grand Canyon, Victoria Falls. These natural wonders share one other thing: they pose extraordinary challenges for their inhabitants. The landmark BBC series Earth’s Natural Wonders combines stunning photography and compelling human drama as it reveals 12 remarkable places — and discovers the stories of people fighting to survive and even triumph. “Extreme Wonders,” the first of three episodes, visits extreme locales, including Mount Everest, where a team of sherpas must rope a route through the notorious Khumbu Icefall; the Grand Canyon, where conservationists desperately try to ensure the survival of a condor chick; and the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro, where farmers fight pitched battles in the dead of night to save their crops from marauding elephants. The second episode is “Wonders of Water,” and the third, “Living Wonders.” Earth’s Natural Wonders airs Wednesdays, November 4, 11 and 18, at 8pm on KQED 9.

The 18th annual Mark Twain Prize airs Monday, November 23, at 9pm on KQED 9.

Each fall, KQED’s Bay Area Bites blog shares a Thanksgiving menu of recipes — sometimes eclectic, often traditional, usually creative and always delicious — along with advice and safety tips for a stress-free holiday meal. From a Thanksgiving menu starring a gorgeous, smoky, mahoganybrowned turkey fresh off the grill to one with a more traditional centerpiece, simply cooked in the oven, you’ll find dishes to please everyone at your holiday table. New this year is a selection of mouthwatering ways to use leftover turkey. You may decide to cook an extra bird just to try these recipes. They’re that good! Visit Bay Area Bites often for new recipes as we get closer to Thanksgiving. And don’t forget to check out Bay Area Bites’ menus for many other holidays, including Christmas, New Year’s Eve and Valentine’s Day.

Chris Rock, Dave Chappelle, Kathy Griffin and Arsenio Hall are among the performers saluting Eddie Murphy with the 2015 Kennedy Center Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. Murphy began his career as a stand-up comedian nearly 40 years ago. In 1980, at the age of 19, he joined the cast of Saturday Night Live and went on to a successful career on the big screen. In fact, Murphy is one of the most commercially successful African American actors in the history of the motion picture business and is one of the industry’s top five box office performers overall. Nominated for multiple Golden Globes and an Academy Award®, Eddie Murphy can now add comedy’s most prestigious accolade to his resume!

News Covering More Than Technology A view from KQED’s Silicon Valley Desk

After reporting all day and into the wee hours of the morning on Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Silicon Valley, then contributing to a Forum broadcast on the subject, Beth Willon, senior editor/ reporter for KQED’s Silicon Valley Desk, needed some sleep. Instead, she was kind enough to take time to talk about her career and the stories she’s working on for KQED. When did you start at KQED, and where were you working before? I just celebrated my one-year anniversary. Before KQED, I was at KGO Radio. I was a general assignment reporter with a lot of emphasis on politics and the courts. I also reported from Pakistan with the East-West Journalism Center for almost a month.

Is KQED’s Silicon Valley Desk focusing on particular kinds of stories? We place a lot of emphasis on covering Silicon Valley’s diverse community. Santa Clara County is arguably the most diverse part of the Bay Area. San Jose has the largest Vietnamese population of any city outside Vietnam. There’s a huge and thriving Latino population and an enormous Indian population. We’ve made a big push to shine a light on communities that have not previously received much attention, with stories on immigration, jobs and services. Most recently we covered the monumental visit by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The last time

One of the most extraordinary civic buildings in America, San Francisco’s City Hall rose from the rubble of the 1906 earthquake to become both the symbol of a resilient citizenry and the epicenter of a city in constant change. The new film The People’s Palace: San Francisco City Hall 100 Years (airing Tuesday, November 24, at 7:30pm on KQED 9) commemorates this remarkable piece of architecture and the dramatic events that have taken place under its dome — labor strife, political assassinations, civil rights struggles and celebrations that have forged the 6

an Indian prime minister came to California was 33 years ago. There are 300,000 Indian Americans in Northern California, and about 150,000 of them live in the Bay Area. So, as you might imagine, there was a lot of pride associated with his visit — as well as protests. What stories do you have in the pipeline? We’ll be looking at Silicon Valley gearing up to enter Cuba. We are also working on stories about surveillance; Homeland Security and the CIA are moving into Silicon Valley, opening offices here to get a piece of the startup action. And, of course, we’ll look at the economics of the Super Bowl. It’s really interesting: Silicon Valley essentially hijacked a lot of the Super Bowl activities from San Francisco, which nobody was expecting. The teams are staying in Silicon Valley and are going to practice at Stanford and San Jose State. And the big, nationally televised media night will be at SAP Center [in San Jose] the week before the Super Bowl. Nobody in their wildest dreams expected San Jose and Santa Clara County to get this much attention! Read the full interview online. kqed.org/interviews

What drew you to the job at KQED? I worked for Oregon Public Broadcasting years ago and am a big fan of public radio, and I have strong personal ties to Silicon Valley. I lived in San Jose for almost 19 years — working and raising my three children. Then I lived in Sacramento and commuted to San Francisco every day for about two years. I listened to KQED quite a bit then and always appreciated the depth and the scope of the stories. Working for KQED in Silicon Valley brings me full circle.

The San Francisco Foundation is pleased to announce its 2015 Innovation Award winner: White Pony Express, an organization dedicated to providing food that would otherwise go to waste to hungry people across Contra Costa County. The award was presented at Bay Area Bold, a weekend symposium in September where community members connected with the Bay Area’s most forward-thinking visionaries. White Pony Express will receive $20,000 from The San Francisco Foundation and a strategic workshop with Full Circle Fund, and it will be featured in a series of short profiles on KQED television and radio.

White Pony Express is an all-volunteer nonprofit created by Dr. Carol Weyland Conner in September 2013. She recalls, “When I discovered there are still people going hungry in our county, I also learned how much nourishing food here goes to waste. Our local community has wholeheartedly joined together to locate this excess food and transport it to those in need. Building on this good start, we’re working to expand this program to ensure that no one in our community goes hungry.”

On Q November 2015 KQED Public Television

Bay Curious stories have proven incredibly popular on KQED Public Radio and are read by ten times as many people as read a typical news story on KQED.org. A recent story about the Oakland origins of the slang word hella is among the top five most-viewed posts this year on KQED’s News Fix blog. Hella good, we say. Read stories, submit a question and vote on what we should answer next.

(pictured l. to r. ) Megan Wilson of the Clarion Alley Mural Project spends time repairing murals each week, but says it’s rare for murals to be completely covered with graffiti, or “bombed”; KQED reporter Jessica Placzek stands with spokesman Dave Hyams near the top of Sutro Tower as she unpacks the landmark’s tumultuous history.

Since launching in April, Bay Curious has received more than 250 questions from inquisitive members of the audience who have wondered things like: What would happen if a tsunami hit the Bay Area? Why doesn’t San Francisco enforce double parking on Sundays? Why don’t murals get covered by graffiti? KQED journalists have gone the distance to dig out the answers, often with the help of the person who submitted the question.

Shetland is so far north, there are nights that never get completely dark. On one such endless day, a teenage girl is murdered, and it is up to DI Jimmy Perez to shed light on the killing. Only recently returned to his native island, Perez finds it hard to break through the suspicion and fear of a community that is not used to locking its doors, but that is now facing the reality of a killer in its midst.
