KQED Member Day at the Contemporary Jewish Museum In 1936 a group of young, idealistic photographers, most of them Jewish and first-generation Americans, formed an organization in Manhattan called the Photo League. Their solidarity centered on a belief in the expressive power of the documentary photograph and on a progressive alliance in the 1930s of socialist ideas and art. The Radical Camera: New York’s Photo League, 1936–1951 presents the contested path of the documentary photograph during a tumultuous period that spanned the New Deal reforms of the Depression, World War II and the Cold War. The exhibition will be on view October 11, 2012 through January 21, 2013, at the Contemporary Jewish Museum.
Enjoy FREE admission to the Contemporary Jewish Museum on Thursday, October 25, from 1pm to 8pm when you present a valid KQED MemberCard and photo ID at the museum entrance. Each MemberCard admits one member plus one guest for a maximum of two persons.

UND TRACKS Experience Music That Matters

Go on tour in Chicago with acclaimed bandleader and Grammy Award–winning musician Wynton Marsalis as he spreads the gospel of jazz to young people. Get a peek backstage as he prepares for a Duke Ellington concert for kids and as his bandmates visit a South Side high school jazz band where music lessons become a kind of jazz philosophy of life. Experience the violent clashes on the streets of Senegal leading up to the country’s 2011 presidential elections through the eyes of world-renowned singer and activist Youssou N’Dour. Sound Tracks follows N’Dour during his run for the presidency against an incumbent accused of corruption as Senegalese musicians lead a historic protest movement. Journey to the remote Uist islands of Scotland and meet Julie Fowlis, the voice behind the theme song for this summer’s animated film Brave. The softspoken singer-songwriter, who launched into the international spotlight with the release of the film, has become an unlikely crusader for the preservation of Scottish Gaelic — her mother tongue and an ancient language on the verge of extinction. The program ends with a “Global Hit,” an exclusive unplugged performance from the Icelandic indie folk-pop sensation Of Monsters and Men. Sound Tracks captures the undeniable thrill of live performance and digs deep into the musicians’ lives with revealing interviews. It’s no wonder that East Bay Express called the program’s 2010 pilot episode “60 Minutes for the MTV generation.”

and stations to invent new forms of reporting that expand service to a wider public. Localore is produced by the Association of Independents in Radio Inc. with funding from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. “We’re thrilled to be part of this innovative storytelling initiative,” says Davia Nelson. “There are so many stories to tell here, and we’re excited to showcase the amazing thinkers, innovators and neighborhood artisans who make the Bay Area such a remarkable place to live and work.” But they can’t do it alone. This is a multimedia community project — the program will be created from listener submissions and recommendations. So tell them what you are making. How about your grandmother? Your next door neighbor? The guy you sit next to at work? Or maybe you read about someone whose invention caught your eye. Tell the Kitchen Sisters and your story might end up on the air!
Davia Nelson and Nikki Silva, better known to KQED listeners as the Kitchen Sisters, have been behind some of your favorite public radio programs. First there was Hidden Kitchens, which became a national phenomenon, and then The Hidden World of Girls, hosted by Tina Fey. Now the Peabody Award– winning producers are collaborating with KQED on The Making Of . . ., a brand-new five-part series chronicling the art and innovation going on in backyards, workplaces, cultural institutions and public spaces of one of the most diverse and innovative regions in the country — the Bay Area. The Making Of . . . isn’t just a new series, it’s also an experiment in how independent producers and public media organizations can work together. This KQED and the Kitchen Sisters collaboration was one of just ten partnerships awarded a grant by Localore, a nationwide project challenging public media makers

Filmed in ten countries and inspired by the best-selling book by Pulitzer Prize– winning authors Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn, Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide follows six actress-advocates, including Diane Lane, America Ferrera and Olivia Wilde, as they meet inspiring, courageous individuals who are confronting oppression and developing real, meaningful solutions through health care, education and economic empowerment for women and girls.
The oppression of women and girls around the world “is the central moral challenge of our time,” says WuDunn. “Like slavery was in the 19th century. Every citizen in the world should want to help.” “This film will move you and compel you to want to be involved,” she promises. “Expect to experience a full range of emotions — fear, excitement, hope, gratefulness.”

KQED President John Boland notes, “As local arts coverage has diminished over the years, KQED has made a commitment to showcasing the Bay Area’s world-class arts scene, and generous gifts like this allow us to think bigger and make a real impact in this underserved field. We’re also recognized as one of the leading sources of in-depth news and information in the Bay Area through KQED News, which the Shrems are also supporting.” Jan adds, “We believe that access to news, information and cultural programming is essential for all people, and KQED provides that and much more to us and all of our neighbors in the Bay Area.” KQED is extremely grateful to Jan and Maria for this incredible gift, and we look forward to bringing arts, culture, news and information programming to the Bay Area for many years to come.

Jan I. Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem with KQED President John Boland.
Jan I. Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem have been longtime supporters of KQED, and they wanted to do more. They wanted to ensure access to intelligent information and the richness of culture for everyone, whether they can buy a ticket to a performance or not. Their recent threeyear gift of $1.5 million — the largest annual, noncampaign individual gift in KQED’s history — will help do just that. “I want to support KQED because it has enriched my life so much,” explains Maria. “I think it is very important that when you’ve done well in life, to give back. The first 30 years of your life are to study and to have a career. The second is to work, the third is to give back.” The Shrem’s gift will support the broadcast of both television and radio programs, including the local broadcast of four operas from the San Francisco Opera on KQED 9 and Forum on KQED Public Radio. In addition, they will support Great Performances, Live from Lincoln Center and broadcasts from the
