Breaking down the silos Improved collaboration — using the strengths of KQED radio, television and online to create the best product on each platform — is a key component of Newsroom. Scott Shafer is the first person in KQED history to be splitting time between radio and television, which he describes as a terrific opportunity that enables him “to think about issues and stories in different ways. Radio is all about sound; television is all about pictures. Both are about storytelling.” Thuy notes that any time you try something new, there are inherent challenges. “How do we meet the needs of our current audience while attracting a new generation of public media fans? How do we adequately cover this region’s diverse issues and interests without becoming so overgeneralized that the program lacks a core focus? We know that it may take some time to iron everything out, but we’re excited about the task ahead.”

2013: KQED Newsroom replaces This Week in Northern California.

Dynamic and forward thinking In addition to offering analysis and in-depth field reports, Newsroom will feature interviews with insightful people focused on the future and innovation. It will be “a place where big thinkers are able to have meaningful, insightful conversations,” says Thuy. According to Scott, “We hope it will be a marketplace of ideas where people can tune in to get an understanding of the world, the Bay Area and their community, but also to learn things about where we’re going as a state.” “We live in a place that’s in the business of creating the future — always thinking about tomorrow, five years from now, ten years from now,” he adds. “Ideas launched here at a board of supervisors or a city council meeting, or among engineers in a Silicon Valley garage, might sound kooky at first, but may end up being embraced three or five years later in L.A., Chicago or New York. By being on the front end of that funnel of ideas, we can help people get ahead of the news and understand where we’re going and how we’re going to get there.”
KQED Public Television
It’s rare in the news business to have the chance to build a new program from the ground up. KQED Newsroom is one such opportunity. With host Thuy Vu and senior correspondent Scott Shafer, the multiplatform news service on television, radio and online premieres this month, replacing This Week in Northern California. “The new name, KQED Newsroom, signals a change, but also reminds us that KQED has been innovating to better serve the public for nearly 60 years,” notes KQED President John Boland. “This will not be the Newsroom of the 1960s and ’70s, but rather a 21stcentury service with a name that recognizes our heritage.” Today, people get their news and information from multiple sources. “It’s critical that we meet those needs,” says Thuy, adding, “It’s exciting to rethink what we cover and how we cover it and give careful thought to what we can do to make our news and public affairs content even better.”

NEWSROOM

California’s San Joaquin Valley is one of the most productive farm regions on the planet. Its fertile orchards and farms generate most of the nation’s almonds, grapes and milk. Yet the people who work on and live near those farms can’t always access that bounty. National hunger surveys show rural families here experience some of the highest levels of food insecurity — not knowing where they’ll find their next meal. The new KQED–Center for Investigative Reporting radio series and television special Hunger in the Valley of Plenty explores that paradox by painting an intimate portrait of how poor families cope and the troubling trends of obesity and diabetes that come with poor nutrition. Listen to the radio series Hunger in the Valley of Plenty on The California Report on Thursday and Friday, October 10 and 11. Watch the television special on Friday, October 11, at 7:30pm, on KQED 9.
Premiere Night QUEST, Nature and NOVA are all new. On Wednesday, October 16, at 7:30pm, dive into a new season of QUEST with a half-hour special that explores the storied history and fragile environment of Lake Tahoe. Lake Tahoe attracts 3 million visitors to California and Nevada each year. But the lake is still paying the price of the rampant development that occurred in the 1950s and 1960s, and it now faces new threats, from climate change to invasive species. QUEST tags along with the small army of scientists and others who toil daily to turn back the clock to a time when you could see 100 feet down into the lake’s blue waters. Notes producer Gabriela Quirós, “Everyone is so motivated to preserve Tahoe’s natural beauty, but all the work involved really highlighted the fragility of the whole endeavor.”
Following at 8pm, Nature’s “Saving Otter 501” tells the story of the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s 501st attempt to save a stranded orphan otter. From her discovery as a newborn pup crying on the beach, through her rehabilitation in secret roof tanks atop the Monterey Bay Aquarium, follow Otter 501 as she learns how to survive in the wild. At 9pm, NOVA host and New York Times technology columnist David Pogue returns to the acclaimed “Making Stuff ” miniseries, which now explores how technology makes stuff faster, colder, safer and wilder. Later in October, check out new QUEST episodes from our partner stations around the country — investigating our food resources, the health of America’s waterways and its energy future.

Confused about where you can walk your dog? Or what exactly is privatepublic land? You’re in luck. KQED News has launched an interactive guide to public space in the Bay Area. Public Places and Open Spaces helps users understand the different types of public parks and space — from national seashores to land owned by nonprofit trusts. Discover the types of activities parks allow and specific places to try them out. Maybe you’ll even learn about a kiteboarding or an all-terrain vehicle hotspot right in your backyard.
Also in October, KQED’s Monday night lineup of independent films includes three critically acclaimed new documentaries. On October 7, POV’s “Brooklyn Castle” follows five members of a champion chess team from a below-thepoverty-line junior high in Brooklyn. The following two weeks bring POV’s “56 Up,” which returns to England for the eighth film in a series that’s followed the same group since age 7, and the Independent Lens film “The Waiting Room,” a critically acclaimed documentary that interweaves several stories that unfold in surprising ways in the ER waiting room at Oakland’s Highland Hospital.

Hosted once again by award-winning television, film and stage star Anna Deavere Smith, the PBS Arts Fall Festival returns with seven weekly programs highlighting everything from Broadway classics and opera to legendary superstar Barbra Streisand (in November). The festival kicks off on Friday, October 18, with Great Performances’ “40th Anniversary Celebration” — an all-star homecoming of alumni performers at Lincoln Center. The following week, don’t miss A Rasin in the Sun Revisited: The Raisin Cycle at Center Stage, a performance documentary capturing the history and legacy of A Raisin in the Sun and the backstage challenges faced by Baltimore’s Center Stage when mounting two issue-driven plays — Clybourne Park and Beneatha’s Place — simultaneously.

Genealogy Roadshow Comes to San Francisco Part detective story, part emotional journey If you happened to pass by the Old Mint in San Francisco on a Sunday in July and wondered about the line of people outside, the mystery can now be solved. The new series Genealogy Roadshow was filming an episode, which airs this month on KQED.
We certainly don’t want to give away any of the surprises in store, but we can tell you that the episode contains a whale of a story about a founding father, another about one of the most despised names in history and a good old-fashioned love story.
“ There are other genealogy shows out there, but they concentrate on celebrities. I love that this format concentrates on people who aren’t famous.”
Top to bottom: Genealogist Kenyatta Berry (center) during taping of Genealogy Roadshow in San Francisco; participant Cecilia Chen discovers the answers to long held questions about her family’s history.
“The Bay Area is a natural fit for Genealogy Roadshow,”notes executive producer Stuart Krasnow. “San Francisco has always been a fantastically diverse melting pot, attracting the most colorful personalities and people from all walks of life.”
Genealogy Roadshow “San Francisco, CA” airs Monday, October 7, at 9pm on KQED 9.
“This program is like a game show where people are winning information about themselves that they’d never be able to find on their own,” adds Krasnow. “It’s pretty amazing.” Read interviews with producer Stuart Krasnow and Kenyatta Berry, one of the on-air experts. kqed.org/onq-exclusives
