This year is a momentous one for Forum. Not only does KQED’s award-winning call-in news and public affairs program celebrate its 30th anniversary, but also its longtime host, Michael Krasny — who has been the show’s familiar voice for nearly 25 years — has been inducted into the Bay Area Radio Hall of Fame, Class of 2017. Honored in the Talk Show Host category, he was among 11 new inductees recognized as “broadcast legends.” Expressing his gratitude for the induction, Michael said, “Broadcast journalism has been a wonderful way to serve the public and continue an ongoing lifetime pursuit of knowledge. I am, above all, an educator. The work I have done on Forum has allowed me to be a public educator and, I hope, to shed light on issues that matter and advance democracy and citizenship as well as having the great privilege of interviewing some of the most important newsmakers and luminaries of our era.” In September, Michael and Mina Kim, the host of Friday Forum, commemorated the show’s anniversary with a special live program at SFJAZZ in San Francisco. Author Salman Rushdie, performer Rhodessa Jones, and musicians Zakir Hussain and Joshua Redman were among the special guests. “Forum has grown over 30 years as a place where the public can expect a high level of discourse, debate and dissemination of knowledge,” Michael added. “I am fortunate to have a great team behind me and an inimitable wide range of listeners. I only hope we can continue to fulfill our mission in the best and most exemplary way possible.” Forum airs weekdays from 9 to 11am on KQED 88.5 FM. Listen to past episodes online at kqed.org/forum. Funding for Forum is provided by the Germanacos Foundation, the Jenerosity Foundation, Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem, the Bernard Osher Foundation and the members of KQED. 4

The critically acclaimed Roundabout Theatre Company production of She Loves Me comes to Great Performances in November, kicking off PBS’s Broadway’s Best fall lineup on Friday, October 20. She Loves Me was the first Broadway musical ever to stream live during a performance at Roundabout Theatre Company’s Studio 54. In the musical, Tony Award–winner Laura Benanti and Tony nominee Zachary Levi star as Amalia and Georg, two parfumerie clerks who aren’t quite the best of friends. Constantly bumping heads while on the job, the sparring co-workers can’t seem to find common ground. But little do they know, the anonymous romantic pen pals they have both been falling for happen to be each other. Will love continue to blossom once their identities are finally revealed? Following She Loves Me, the Broadway’s Best series continues with Holiday Inn (November 24) and a tribute to Harold Prince, the living embodiment of Broadway’s Golden Age (November 17), along with the acclaimed revival of Present Laughter (November 3), and encores of In the Heights – Chasing Broadway Dreams (November 10) and Hamilton’s America (December 1).

Education
The Summer of (Teacher) Learning Camp KQED Teach empowers educators to bring media-based learning into their classrooms. Although some teachers use summer to relax and take a vacation, many use the unstructured time to strengthen their knowledge and skills before the next academic year begins. This year, KQED Teach, a free online learning service to help K–12 teachers develop their digital media skills, launched its first online summer challenge, Camp KQED Teach, focused on data visualization. Data visualization is a crucial 21st-century skill that empowers students (and teachers) to be savvy media makers who both think critically about the media they consume and can clearly communicate complex data to audiences who matter to them.
6
For two months, more than 3,000 educators strengthened their data visualization skills, learning how to make infographics, interactive maps and digital timelines — all from the comfort of their own homes. By the end of the camp experience, teachers had shared more than 300 final projects and lesson plans with a community of their peers. Noted one participant: “It was helpful to see what other teachers were creating, and getting ideas from them.” Another participant liked “being exposed to new forms of technology and ideas for how to integrate them into the classroom,” adding, “I also liked having to practice and publish my final projects.”
KQED plans to offer new media challenges during school breaks, including winter and summer. If you are a teacher looking to grow your media skills and literacies, join our community! teach.kqed.org Funding for KQED Education is provided by the Koret Foundation, David Bulfer and Kelly Pope, the Horace W. Goldsmith Foundation, the Stuart Foundation, the Panta Rhea Foundation, the Braitmayer Foundation and the members of KQED.

Science lovers unite! The Bay Area Science Festival is back for its seventh year with a dazzling set of science adventures, October 26 through November 11. This year’s festival includes more than 50 events at venues around the Bay Area, featuring renowned scientists and science lovers alike. Highlights include a maker-themed variety show with Mythbuster Adam Savage on Saturday, October 28, at the Castro Theatre; the Halloween science-themed Creatures of the NightLife event at the California Academy of Sciences on Thursday, October 26; and a series of intimate dinners with scientists throughout the week. The festival concludes with Discovery Days at AT&T Park on Saturday, November 11. The event will turn the baseball stadium into an outdoor science museum, with hands-on science demonstrations from premier science institutions such as the California Academy of Sciences, Stanford University, NASA Ames, as well as KQED. Visit bayareascience.org for a complete listing of festival events and activities.
There’s the drama of sports and then there’s real drama. This month, eight of your favorite drama classics and mysteries will compete head-to-head in KQED’s first ever Drama World Series. Will a classic period drama rule the field or will a detective from a murder mystery be crowned champion? Vote for your favorite as Downton Abbey, Victoria, Poldark, Anne of Green Gables, Sherlock, Prime Suspect, Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries and Grantchester step up to the plate. The players are all ready — Ross Poldark and Sydney Chambers have been hitting the gym, and the Dowager Countess and Phryne Fisher are primed to take them on in this one-of-a-kind championship showdown. Visit facebook.com/KQED starting October 2 to find out how to cast your vote, and follow KQED Pop (kqed.org/pop) for show recaps and more. The winning series will be announced online and will air in an all-day marathon, Sunday, October 29, on KQED Plus.
