No Passport Required showcases how food can bring diverse Americans around the table. In New Orleans, Samuelsson learns how Vietnamese culinary traditions have fully integrated into the fabric of the city, taking center stage with long-established French and African influences. In New York — where Samuelsson opened his first restaurant, Red Rooster Harlem — he is shown how the Indo-Guyanese culture thrives in a small enclave of Queens and how this one community has combined the best of its Indian, Caribbean and colonial heritage influences into its customs and cuisine. In Chicago, Samuelsson ventures into the city’s Mexican neighborhoods and discovers their impact on the area’s food and cultural landscape. And going beyond the borders of South Beach, he meets up with members of Miami’s proud Haitian community. No Passport Required premieres Tuesday, July 10, at 9pm on KQED 9.

Take a road trip this summer with renowned chef Marcus Samuelsson as he travels the United States in search of multicultural culinary adventures. No Passport Required, a new six-part series presented by PBS and Eater (the food and dining brand from Vox Media), takes viewers on an inspiring journey to explore and celebrate the wide-ranging diversity of immigrant traditions and cuisine woven into American food and culture. Each week, Samuelsson — an immigrant himself — visits a new city to discover the dynamic and creative ways a particular community has made its mark. A vibrant portrait of America today, No Passport Required features musicians, poets, chefs, business owners, artists, community leaders and home cooks who have enhanced the nation’s culture and cuisine. From Detroit, where Samuelsson meets Middle Eastern immigrants who call the city home, to the Ethiopian community in Washington, D.C.,

Drag queens have been central figures in San Francisco’s LGBTQ movement since the 1966 Compton’s Cafeteria riot, when a customer (identified in some historical accounts as a drag queen and in others as a transwoman), fed up with being harrassed, threw a cup of coffee at a police officer who grabbed her arm. Bystanders from the LGBTQ community joined in, and the confrontation — three years before Stonewall — resulted in what filmmaker Susan Stryker calls the “first known instance of collective militant, queer resistance to police harassment in United States history.” The Compton’s Cafeteria riot showed that drag is political, and that it has occupied a central role in the queer liberation movement from the beginning 4
— especially in San Francisco. In this spirit, The Changing Face of Drag, a new KQED Arts story series, spotlights Bay Area drag artists at the vanguard of their genre and showcases how the art form has evolved. In 2018, drag is more popular than ever — due in large part to RuPaul’s Drag Race, the TV competition that’s produced some of the genre’s biggest stars. But the real-life drag world is a lot more diverse than Drag Race, and the thriving underground drag culture of the Bay Area demonstrates this. The five performers profiled in The Changing Face of Drag include Juanita MORE!, a longtime drag queen who leverages her popularity to fight for political causes; Jader (pictured), a special effects makeup expert who challenges
drag’s high-femme conventions with otherworldly looks; Jay Mercury, a drag king who eschews the gender binary with daring performances; Nicki Jizz, who makes space for queer and trans people of color in nightlife; and Trangela Lansbury, who brings drag to the world of cosplay and comic books. Everyone’s approach is different, proving that drag is an evolving art form that continues to spark conversations about gender, sexuality and culture while advocating for equality for all, one fake eyelash and silicone breastplate at a time. —Nastia Voynovskaya, KQED Arts kqed.org/arts

that uses artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning to produce and compose music. The evening will show what musicians can do with their voice and a single instrument, and we’ll examine what is possible with AI technologies. Panelists include Douglas Eck, a Google research scientist exploring the role of machine learning in creating art and music. He will discuss Google’s new project, Magenta, which is developing algorithms and smart tools for musicians to expand their creative processes. The evening will continue with a performance by Amy X Neuburg. Also joining is Stanford associate professor Ge Wang, a musician and computer scientist specializing in the art of computer
design, human computer interactions, and methodologies for education at the intersection of art, engineering and design. Alongside the musical guests, scientists will further explore what music composition looks like now and what it could look like in the future. These technologies are not replacing musicians or composers, but are changing the way music is created. The evening will close with an opportunity to ask the panelists and musicians questions. Tickets are available now at live.stanford.edu/kqedfuture.

KQED Silicon Valley Conversations has teamed up with Stanford Live Presents for the second installment of its series on trends in technology. Join host Tonya Mosley, KQED’s Silicon Valley Bureau Chief, on Thursday, July 19, at 7:30pm at Stanford’s Bing Concert Hall for “The Future of Music — Computer or Composer,” an evening of conversation and performance looking at how technology is influencing the future of music. Explore what it is that makes us love music and whether that love is possible without the human touch. From classical to jazz to EDM (electronic dance music), music has always been marked by innovation and experimentation. But in recent years, we’ve seen the advent of software

In addition, the podcast draws on WBEZ Chicago’s coverage of his political life and dozens of hours of original interviews about his formative years. “The city of Chicago played an essential role in shaping Obama’s approach to politics, and WBEZ had a front-row seat to that journey,” says White. “For this series, we spoke with many of the key players who were part of those pre-White House years — some people you will recognize but others you probably won’t.” WBEZ Chicago launched the Making series in 2016 by sharing the inside story of Chicago icon Oprah Winfrey.

Barack Obama was once just a young man with a new job in the city of Chicago. In Making Obama, part of the documentary podcast series Making from WBEZ Chicago, the former president and key advisers, mentors and rivals speak openly about his political career path and how Chicago was a conduit for his ultimate success as America’s first African American president. This month, KQED 88.5 FM will broadcast the podcast in two parts. Hosted by WBEZ’s Jennifer White and produced by Colin McNulty, Making Obama pulls back the curtain on his rise to national prominence, from his early days as a South Side Chicago community organizer to his time as a rookie politician being hazed in the Illinois Statehouse to an embarrassing run for U.S. Congress. The series culminates with an epic comeback and the start of the national political movement that catapulted him into the White House. WBEZ sat down with the former president in a candid conversation and interviewed those who were around

10 Streets That Changed America airs Tuesday, July 10, at 8pm on KQED 9.
On Q July 2018
Learn how streets have connected the nation, divided communities, and changed the way Americans live, work and shop on 10 Streets That Changed America. Discover the story behind the development of L.A.’s Miracle Mile, a revolutionary new shopping district catering to motorists in what was once considered the suburbs. Trace Broadway’s 400-year evolution from Native American trail to Dutch trading route to the home of America’s first public transit service and an electrically lighted theater district known as the Great White Way. Episodes visit historic roads in Boston, New Orleans, Detroit, San Francisco and more.
15
A half-century ago, Sir Edmund Hillary, a beekeeper from New Zealand, and Tenzing Norgay, a sherpa from Nepal, became the first people to reach the summit of Mount Everest, the tallest mountain on Earth. Discover the inspiring story of Hillary, who was raised in a strict family, but eventually had to rebel against his stern father in order to follow his own convictions and climb mountains. Hilary premieres Tuesday, July 17, at 7pm on KQED Plus.

Midsomer Murders Season 13 finale airs Wednesday, July 25, at 8pm on KQED Plus.
On Q July 2018
Beheadings, stabbings, drownings and more — Midsomer Murders Season 13 does not disappoint! Watch as Detective Chief Inspector Tom Barnaby (John Nettles) and Detective Sergeant Ben Jones (Jason Hughes) continue to investigate the terrible murders and dastardly deeds that befall the picturesque county of Midsomer. Behind the well-trimmed hedges and lace curtains, secrets hide and dangers lurk, and it’s up to Barnaby and Jones to unpack the mysteries before disaster strikes again. Filled with twists and turns, the season finale marks the last appearance of Nettles, a fan favorite.
