The Castro of the 1970s became for many in the LGBTQ community both a haven from prejudice and a model for joining the fabric of middle-class American society. At the same time, the neighborhood became a lightning rod for America’s growing discomfort with the new openness of gays in their midst. It’s a tale of social upheaval, exuberant street culture, political assassination and the inspiring coming-of-age of an entire community — and ongoing saga even today. “The neighborhood has evolved as gay culture has evolved,” says Stein. “With LGBTQ life more accepted now, many wonder aloud if there’s even a need for gay neighborhoods at all, or they see the Castro as something of a theme park and not a battleground. And yet the Castro remains both a vital symbol and a real presence in gay life today. How we got here — its story of intentional, insistent visibility — is especially moving in these times.” Watch The Castro on Friday, June 15, at 8pm on KQED 9.

You know the Castro, but do you know its story? The mecca for our rainbow community was a quiet, working-class neighborhood of European immigrants only a few decades ago. Discover how this neighborhood transformed, as told by the people who lived it: young and old, straight and gay. Originally released in 1997 and a perennial member favorite, the KQED-produced, Peabody Award-winning documentary The Castro airs Friday, June 15, on KQED 9 at 8pm. Using rare archival film and contemporary footage, the documentary brings to life a history ranging from the discriminatory world of the 1950s through the flowering of “gay power” into the age of AIDS. What happened in the Castro changed the way Americans viewed the LGBTQ community. For the first time, this long-persecuted minority claimed a residential neighborhood as its own — and began exercising its own political and economic clout. “The drama in this one neighborhood is remarkable,” says producer/director Peter L. Stein. “It’s the story of men and women who came to San Francisco seeking a place to call home when their own homes were often hostile to them. In the process, they built a whole culture, with nationwide ramifications.”

Truly CA Reveals the Authentic Golden State The new season, premiering Friday, June 22, features 14 documentary films
4
Truly CA: Our State, Our Stories, KQED’s documentary series highlighting unique California personalities and experiences, returns for Season 13 on Friday, June 22. The Corridor presented in partnership with America ReFramed and The WORLD Channel, kicks off the new season, which airs every Friday at 8pm. Directed and produced by Richard M. O’Connell and KQED staffer Annelise Wunderlich (executive producer, Education), The Corridor offers unfettered access into the San Francisco prison system exploring the implementation of the first high school curriculum in the nation that enables inmates to obtain school credit while serving time. Viewers will also meet artists, activists and film archivists in Between Worlds, which chronicles a collaboration between a long-exposure photographer and a renowned sand artist. Political Animals introduces the assemblywomen who paved the way for gay marriage and health-care equality throughout California. We also meet cancer survivor and artist commune overseer Joan von Briesen in Lady Bountiful, a hypnotizing short by Ethan Goldwater, and we see the impact of community engagement in Futbolistas 4 Life, a short film directed by Jun Stinson that follows the success story of immigrant youth as they navigate the complexities of immigration status during a tumultuous time. Hosting more than ten shorts and four features, Season 13 also includes: Oddball, an exploration of the man behind San Francisco’s most eclectic film archives, Stephen Parr, by Joshua Moore; a meditative study on the art of being a theater projectionist by Los Angeles filmmaker Juji Bartonelli; two shorts by filmmakers Mohammad Gorjestani and Malcolm Pullinger, Happy Birthday Mario Woods and The Boombox Collection, with the latter featuring Oakland hip-hop artist Boots Riley; and Welcome to the Neighborhood, by Pam Uzzell, which introduces us to the impact of gentrification on Berkeley artist Mildred Howard. “California’s origin story begins and still continues as the land of new, pioneering ideas and innovations,” says Mohammad Gorjestani, director of The Boombox Collection. “But at the same time, and like the rest of America, it’s not immune to the
pitfalls of systematic racism and capitalism. That high stakes friction of the two-sided ‘American Dream’ has created movements and has fostered individuals, like Boots Riley, to emerge as the voice of the vibrant underdogs and residents, which to me is the true gold of the Golden State.” To close out the season we get a front-row ticket to the California desert temporary art exhibit aptly titled Desert X, from KCET’s Artbound series; Hale, Brad Bailey’s short film about disability rights activist Hale Zukas, who was born with cerebral palsy and is responsible for the independent living movement and the design of the BART elevator buttons; and A View From the Window, a transcendental slice of life about a preschool for the deaf by Stanford University filmmakers Christian Filippone and Azar Kafaei. Watch Truly CA Fridays at 8pm starting Friday, June 22.

Goodbye Cy, We’ll Miss You Cy Musiker, award-winning news reporter, anchor and host of KQED’s weekly arts show The Do List, departs KQED after 23 years
KQED Public Television
A familiar voice on your Friday morning commute, Cy Musiker is a founding host of The Do List — a weekly radio show and podcast about the must-see shows and hottest events in the Bay Area. In May, Musiker hands the host mic to KQED Arts Senior Editor Gabe Meline. Working with a roster of co-hosts from around the Bay, Meline will continue the show’s tradition of interviewing a diverse array of guests and artists and spotlighting unique local events, performances and shows throughout the region. Before he started his new adventures in Grass Valley, Musiker sat down with On Q to talk about his work at KQED.

Advice for future journalists and storytellers? My j-school professor Jim Spaulding always said a good story
What will you miss most about your time here at KQED and/or as a journalist? It’s been the greatest honor of my life to work at KQED and be one of its voices in the Bay Area. It’s hard to leave now, when the newsroom, arts and science groups are telling such important stories and when our work is so critical to protecting our democracy. What’s next? First, I’m not retiring, but I’ve moved to Grass Valley — and I hate long commutes. KQED comes in really clearly in my new home. I still love terrestrial radio, that 100-year-old medium. So I’ll be listening. I aspire now to the life of a country bumpkin. I’m mastering a Husqvarna chain saw and bringing cattle into my yard for rotational grazing. Beyond that, I have no idea what comes next. Funding for KQED Arts is provided by The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, Yogen and Peggy Dalal, Diane B. Tell us about The Do List and covering Bay Area arts. The Do List began in October of 2008, thanks to the vision of Jo Anne Wallace, and the hard work of the San Francisco Chronicle's David Wiegand (The Do List’s founding co-anchor, who passed away unexpectedly on April 30, 2018) as well as producers Suzie Racho and Nina Thorsen and engineer Ceil Mueller. I’m ever so grateful for their friendship and the work we shared. We stumbled into something great together, a show that won the hearts of many artists and the loyalty of our listeners.
should answer the question “Why does it matter?” And Raul Ramirez always left for the day with the admonition “Serve the people.” Those are still the words I try to live by in my work. Get magazine online: kqed.org/OnQ
When did you start working at KQED? I moved to California in 1978 to work in the wine business and spent some very happy years working in Napa Valley. I then followed an old passion for the news into the Journalism School at UC Berkeley and, from there, into a life as a freelance reporter for KPFA, NPR, Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and the British Broadcasting Corporation. I joined KQED 23 years ago as senior editor for KQED News and then senior producer for The California Report under the late Raul Ramirez.

Celebrating All Things Tentacled KQED’s Deep Look series celebrates Cephalopod Week with Science Friday
6
Deep Look, KQED’s award-winning YouTube science series, is teaming up with Science Friday and Atlas Obscura to bring you a night of cephalo-fun! Join us at Public Works in San Francisco on Wednesday, June 20, to celebrate all things tentacled in honor of the five-year anniversary of Science Friday’s Cephalopod Week. You’ll discover the wild lives of octopuses, squid, cuttlefish and more in short videos by Deep Look and Science Friday, followed by a talk with the producers about these remarkable creatures and the challenges of filming them. “What’s a cephalopod,” you ask and “why does it need its own week?” Octopuses, cuttlefish and squid belong to a class of animals referred to as cephalopods. These animals, widely regarded as the most intelligent of the invertebrates, use their color change abilities for both concealment and communication.
Their ability to hide is critical to their survival because, with the exception of the nautiluses, these squishy creatures live without the protection of external shells and so have evolved to have some unusual survival skills. We celebrate them because they are just so extraordinary! See the unseen and explore science up close (really, really close) with KQED’s Deep Look videos at kqed.org/deeplook. To find out more about the event on Wednesday, June 20, at 7:30pm, visit kqed.org/events. Funding for KQED Science is provided by the Templeton Religion Trust and the Templeton World Charity Foundation, the S. D. Bechtel, Jr. Foundation, the Dirk and Charlene Kabcenell Foundation, the Vadasz Family Foundation, the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, the Fuhs Family Foundation and the members of KQED.
KQED and PBS have partnered to offer a new PBS Media Literacy Educator Certification, a free program recognizing pre-K–12 educators with expertise in teaching students to produce media that matters and think critically about their role as media consumers and creators. To get certified, educators submit a portfolio of work to KQED Teach — KQED’s online professional learning platform — that demonstrates their mastery of four key media literacy competencies: reading, writing, sharing and teaching. For educators who need support in building these competencies, free media literacy courses will be available on KQED Teach to help teachers improve their skills in specific areas. The KQED media literacy courses help educators develop competencies, including the ability to create original content using multiple media production techniques, share original media on a variety of online platforms and implement lessons that help students foster media skills. Teachers who complete the certification program will receive a connection to their local PBS station, a certificate and a digital badge signifying their status as a PBS Media Literacy Educator, plus the opportunity to participate with and present alongside PBS in a wide variety of events. To learn more, visit kqed.org/certification. Funding for KQED Education is provided by the Koret Foundation, David Bulfer and Kelly Pope, the Cisco Foundation, the Silver Giving Foundation, the Stuart Foundation, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the Horace W. Goldsmith Foundation, the Panta Rhea Foundation, the Braitmayer Foundation, the Lisa and Douglas Goldman Fund and the members of KQED.

“These are stories about people who have made extraordinary, sometimes counter-intuitive decisions,” says Campbell. “Some are people throwing caution — and their comfortable lives — to the wind to do something completely new. Others are finding remarkable courage to change a bad situation. We’re telling stories of people’s leaps and their consequences.” Listen to new episodes of The Leap Season 3 every other Tuesday on Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts.
KQED Public Radio
The Leap, KQED’s award-winning storytelling podcast, is back for a brand-new season. Featuring remarkable stories of life-altering changes, Season 3 features six new tales of surprising and sometimes dangerous transformations. Hosted by KQED reporter Judy Campbell and featuring story contributions by her, April Dembosky and Chris Colin, the new season builds on last year’s episodes, which you can hear on 88.5 FM during its rebroadcast of Season 2 (see schedule below). Listeners will meet a family man who tries to forge relationships with nearly two dozen children he never knew he had; a local punk rocker who leaves guitars and a girlfriend behind to join a Kurdish military in Syria, where he sees combat and becomes a Twitter sensation; a professional dancer who concocts an elaborate double life as an attorney to appease her immigrant parents; and a mother who makes a dramatic, high-risk attempt to reunite with a daughter abducted by her ex.

Lark Rise to Candleford airs Tuesdays, June 12, 19 and 26 at 9pm on KQED Plus.
On Q June 2018
Lark Rise to Candleford chronicles the daily lives of farmworkers, craftsmen and gentry in the small Oxfordshire hamlet of Lark Rise and the wealthier neighboring market town of Candleford toward the end of the 19th century. This BBC drama, adapted from Flora Thompson's trilogy of novels by the same name, observes the characters in loving, boisterous and competing communities of families, rivals, friends and neighbors.
15
Two love stories, 60 years apart, chart the changes and challenges of gay lives in England — from the era of jail terms to the onset of dating apps. Vanessa Redgrave stars in Man in an Orange Shirt, scripted by best-selling novelist Patrick Gale. This Masterpiece drama explores a forbidden relationship made impossible by illegality and societal pressure and contrasts it with present-day romance as a minefield of internalized issues and temptations. Man in an Orange Shirt airs Sunday, June 17, at 9pm on KQED 9.
