COURTESY WEBBY AWARDS

NEWS + NOTES

KQED’s Video Series Dances Its Way to a Webby Award Terry Wedington (dancer, Baltimore); Kelly Whalen, KQED Senior Digital Producer; Claudia Escobar, KQED Digital Producer; Rodrick Davis (dancer, New Orleans)

If Cities Could Dance, a KQED digital video series that just completed its second season, was honored with a 2019 People’s Voice Webby Award in the Social – Arts & Entertainment category. Called the “Oscars of the Internet,” the awards get 13,000 entries from all 50 states and more than 70 countries. The award-winning series features artists who are reclaiming their space — and their neighborhoods — through dance, bringing both history and community voices to the forefront in 15 cities including nearby Richmond, Oakland, San Jose and San Francisco plus Minneapolis, Chicago, Memphis, Seattle, Fresno, Miami, Los Angeles, Detroit, Portland, New Orleans and Baltimore. Other 2019 KQED Webby Award nominations went to the KQED/PBS Digital Studios science series Deep Look, which won in 2018.

Living with Wildfire: California Reimagined An Eight-Part Radio and Online Series The catastrophic and unpredictable way that wildfires ripped through a Santa Rosa neighborhood and the entire town of Paradise is a stark warning that we are not doing what's necessary to protect neighborhoods and people from wildfire. In a special eight-part radio and online series, Living with Wildfire: California Reimagined, KQED takes an in-depth look at the questions Californians need to begin asking to live with wildfire in a warming world.

KQED’s series looks first at previous societal changes to illuminate the lessons that can be learned from other times people rebalanced their priorities to protect life and liberty for everyone. Next, the series investigates how well Californians are doing with creating defensible space around their homes and whether it’s truly possible to create fire-safe neighborhoods. The series also examines other important issues, such as: how California can better manage its forests; how to improve evacuations; who should pay the costs of insuring homes; and whether there are some places homes shouldn’t be built. Ultimately, KQED’s reporting reveals that living with wildfire as the climate continues to warm means reimagining the relationship between land and people to find new ways of working with California’s wildlands, forests and ecosystems as they are becoming — not as they’ve been in the past. “We want to get people thinking about a different way forward. We raise uncomfortable questions that pose a trade-off between individual rights and community protection,” says Kat Snow, KQED’s senior science editor spearheading the series. “For example, what if we banned rebuilding in areas that have burned frequently? What if we fined homeowners who don’t maintain clear space around their homes? What if we didn't allow developments that had only one road in and out?”

RADIO SPECIALS

Airs every other Wednesday, June 12 through October 16, at 8pm (repeats Thursdays at 2am) Silicon Valley is home to a global hub of technology innovation and tech giants whose influence has changed the landscape, politics and economy of the Bay Area and the world. Tech’s pervasive influence is impossible to ignore for Bay Area residents — imagine going one day without hearing about, seeing or using technology borne out of Silicon Valley. How did this tech takeover happen? How does a startup grow to become a successful business? And how can we apply these lessons to our own lives? KQED is proud to present the ten-part special series called Masters of Scale, an original podcast now in its third season. Host Reid Hoffman — LinkedIn co-founder, partner at Greylock, and a prominent investor and entrepreneur — seeks to answer these questions and share the answers with the next generation of startups and entrepreneurs. In each episode, Hoffman theorizes how companies grow from zero to a gazillion and tests these theories with legendary founders and leaders from Silicon Valley and beyond. Guests for this season include Marissa Mayer and Reed Hastings discussing harnessing the power in your people (June 12), Caterina Fake (June 26), Arianna Huffington (July 24), Ev Williams (September 4) and others. Tune in to KQED FM for this entertaining and illuminating series and take away best practices on how to think boldly and differently about the world.—Chloe Morizono
