Truth Be Told A bold podcast for people of color by people of color

of There Will Be No Miracles Here; Jeff Chang, author of Can’t Stop Won’t Stop; and Tonya’s 92-year-old grandmother, Ernestine Mosley. Profoundly personal and resonantly universal, Truth Be Told transforms into more than an advice show — it’s a journey of liberation paved with laughter and love, centering on the voices, stories, joy and wisdom of people of color. Find Truth Be Told for free on Apple Podcasts, NPR One or wherever you get your podcasts or visit kqed.org/podcasts/truthbetold.

KQED.ORG • DECEMBER 2018

An advice column is one of the most American of things, but whose America? Miss Manners may tell you how to behave, but the new podcast series Truth Be Told explores how you can be you in a world that doesn’t always want you to be. Truth Be Told is made by and for people of color and speaks to the unique yet universal challenges that we face in the United States. It’s like the friend you call after an exhausting day — the one who will laugh, cry, scream and moan with you. The one who gets it. Through unfiltered advice, host Tonya Mosley takes on audience questions, digging into what it means not just to survive, but to thrive as a person of color in America. Is it okay to seek out pleasure when the world seems to be burning? Am I having a child just to make mi mamá happy? Is it worth it to establish ties with estranged relatives? In search of answers to these questions and more, Mosley travels from San Francisco to Detroit to New York over six episodes to speak with unconventional experts whose wisdom stems from their lived experiences, studies and artistry — people like adrienne maree brown, author of Octavia’s Brood and Pleasure Activism; Casey Gerald, author

Me, the Refugee Airs Wednesday, June 5, at 8pm on KQED 88.5 FM When Sahar Zand’s father got into political trouble with their country’s regime, she and her family were forced to flee and seek a new life. This powerful documentary from the BBC details the experience of Zand and her family — from the devastation of fleeing to months of limbo in a Danish refugee center to days on the run across Europe to life in the United Kingdom. Zand’s personal and intimate reporting explores the complex roles, deceptions and sacrifices she and her family members experienced during those often-desperate times and how the effects of that experience continue to have a profound impact on her life today. —Chloe Morizono

Just Eat It: Why Food Waste Matters Airs Thursday, June 27, at 8pm on KQED 88.5 FM Agriculture accounts for two-thirds of the United States’ fresh water use and half of its land use. Despite this massive investment of resources, 40 percent of the food we produce is wasted. What can we do to prevent such rampant food waste? From American Public Media’s The Water Main, this special features Marketplace’s Jed Kim and guests including chefs, farmers and even grocery store dumpster divers. They’ll discuss the resources used to grow food and what we can do to ensure they’re not squandered. You’ll learn helpful tips for shopping for groceries, using leftovers and organizing the refrigerator and hear some of the innovative ways people are challenging themselves to reduce their food waste. —Chloe Morizono
