We’re Honored: KQED Receives Five Prestigious Awards Photographer Sasha Kelley, pictured in West Oakland with her daughter Ameenah, co-founded House of Malico to create paths to financial solvency for artists and women of color in the Bay Area.

KQED was recently recognized with several distinguished awards for our news, arts, science, social media and multimedia work. They include two national 2019 Edward R. Murrow Awards and three Northern California Emmy Awards. The Edward R. Murrow Awards recognize the best broadcast and digital journalism produced by news organizations. They acknowledge local and national news stories that uphold the Radio Television Digital News Association Code of Ethics, demonstrate technical expertise, and exemplify the importance and impact of journalism as a service to the community. KQED News reporter Alex Emslie’s coverage of the legal developments in the 2015 Mario Woods shooting case won the award in the Multimedia category. The report included an interactive timeline as well as a video breaking down the footage of the shooting and providing new details in the case. KQED Arts also received an award for excellence in Social Media for its six-month campaign supporting the series The Hustle, which looked at how Bay Area artists support themselves despite the rising living costs in the region. KQED Arts Engagement Producer Lina Blanco led the social campaign based on the series overseen by Visual Arts Editor Sarah Hotchkiss and Senior Editor Gabe Meline. Meanwhile, the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences San Francisco/Northern California chapter awarded KQED three Emmys. Truly CA’s “Oddball,” about a Mission District man who has kept the largest and most unusual film collection in Northern California, won in the Arts/Entertainment category (Joshua Moore, writer/director; Matthew Rome, cinematographer; Elizabeth Payne, editor). Students on the Move: Keeping Uprooted Kids in School Airs Wednesday, August 14, at 8pm Like most major life transitions, moving homes has a profound and lasting impact on people’s lives. Children are often the most vulnerable, as disrupted peer relationships, stress and anxiety can impact a child’s emotional and academic development. The effects are compounded when moves are frequent or the result of instability: Research shows that the millions of children facing housing insecurity in the United States are more likely to struggle in school and drop out. APM reports on this in Students on the Move, the first in a series of education documentaries coming to KQED. Hear more about how housing insecurity affects children, particularly homeless children and children of migrant farmworkers, and what we can do to help them succeed in school.

Climate One: Cities for the Future Airs Thursday, August 8, at 8pm Ask any Bay Area resident: Cities are experiencing a growth spurt. We’ve seen it in the competition for housing, skyrocketing rents, the influx of traffic and the new developments popping up left and right. It’s hard not to worry about the sustainability of this growth trend when more than half of the global population lives in urban centers and another 2.5 billion people are expected to join them there by 2050. Climate One brings us a conversation with architect Jan Gehl, who helped turn Times Square into a more pedestrianfriendly place and has influenced urban planning globally with his people-centered approach to urban design. Gehl provides insight on designing sustainable cities that can withstand the challenges of climate change and rapid population growth.

PODCASTS

What are the best podcasts to listen to right now? We asked Ericka Cruz Guevarra, producer of KQED’s The Bay podcast, what she recommends. Here are her picks.

STARTER EPISODE

“How Gay Activists in San Francisco Educated the World About AIDS”

What’s happening here in the Bay Area? The Bay focuses on one story, one conversation, and one idea to widen the lens on what may seem like a simple news headline. This episode explores how gay activists raised global awareness around AIDS.

STARTER EPISODE

How does the media shape our worldview? On the Media is WNYC’s weekly investigation of this question. “Introducing the Scarlet E” is the beginning of a three-part series that takes a deep look into what we think we know — and don’t know — about evictions in America.

STARTER EPISODE

“When Money Makes It Weird”

This Is Uncomfortable is a podcast series about life and how money messes with it. In this episode, the host digs into what happens when one person in a relationship has way more money than the other.

In August 1969, nearly half a million people gathered at a farm in New York to hear music, but Woodstock was much more than a concert. This legendary event defined a generation and marked the end of a turbulent decade. It took place against a backdrop of a nation in conflict over sexual politics, civil rights and the Vietnam War. A handoff between generations with far different values and ideals was tangibly present. This new film focuses on the people who were there. Who were they? What experiences and stories did they carry with them to that weekend? How were they changed by those three days?
