KQED Collaborates to Meet California’s Media Literacy Mandate Making media at Richmond High School.
Students today are inundated with information coming at them from many sources. How do they make sense of it? California and several other states have passed media literacy legislation requiring that instructional resources be provided to all teachers who, in turn, will teach media literacy in their classrooms. But where do these resources come from? KQED teamed up with the California Department of Education (CDE) and the California School Library Association to fulfill this mandate. The six-month partnership that created resources is built on KQED’s long-standing relationship with educational leaders throughout the state. These leaders view KQED as a trusted source for educational media and services and a foundational component of media literacy professional learning. The results of that collaboration are now live and available to all teachers at the CDE Media Literacy Resources site. This site highlights KQED Teach and PBS Media Literacy Educator Certification by KQED as the go-to professional learning resources for media literacy. KQED Teach is a platform with free, self-paced online courses on teaching media
literacy and media-making skills. Educators learn by doing with project-based, hands-on courses in a supportive community. They can learn at their own pace or join a facilitated cohort. PBS Media Literacy Educator Certification by KQED is a competencybased, on-demand shareable credential verifying educators’ media literacy skills. In his announcement, California State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond said: “These resources will assist educators in the classroom as they teach students how to access, use evaluate and integrate the information they read or hear online.” He added: “Being media literate is a skill that can not only help them become critical thinkers, but can also help in all areas of their education and future as informed and active civically engaged citizens.” Going forward, KQED and the CDE will continue collaborating to keep the resource site fresh.

Is Economic Inequality an Existential Threat to the Bay Area? Part II: Work
At a Loss for Words: What’s Wrong with How Schools Teach Reading?
Airs Wednesday, October 23, at 8pm on KQED 88.5 FM The promise of well-paying, meaningful employment grows more precarious for many with the rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI), automation and the “gig economy.” In the San Jose area, the highest earners make 10.5 times more than the lowest, and wage growth for high-wage earners outpaces that of low-wage earners. This stark divide is causing a reckoning for the Bay Area. Is it only a matter of pushing for solutions like raising the minimum wage, adopting sustainable hiring practices or considering a universal basic income—or are we still undecided and divided on the value of work? Tune in for Part ll of this series from KQED and SPUR, hosted by Mina Kim, as we discuss the structural changes facing tomorrow’s workforce and what we can do to ensure the dignity of workers and living wages for all.
Airs Thursday, October 24, at 8pm on KQED 88.5 FM Do you use context clues to read words you don’t recognize — or sound them out? These reading strategies have been programmed into many of us since childhood, but one of them is contributing to the vast numbers of high school graduates who aren’t proficient readers. The “threecueing” system, which relies on three types of contextual clues, has been disproven by cognitive scientists, yet it continues to be taught to teachers, promoted in professional development and marketed by publishers. Tune in to this fascinating education documentary from APM Reports to learn more about how this system came to be, Students work together during a first grade literacy how it has stuck around and and reading class at Achieve Academy in Oakland, how it harms kids. California.

OCTOBER PICKS
Check, Please! Bay Area fans will have a lot to love this October. Last year we stirred up Check, Please! Bay Area when we invited kids to take a seat at the table, alongside host Leslie Sbrocco, for the first time. We met a lot of articulate fledgling foodies. The Check, Please! Bay Area Kids shows were so popular that we're happy to announce a second season starting Tuesday, October 1. And all-new episodes of the regular Check, Please! Bay Area air on Thursday nights. The new season of Check, Please Bay Area Kids kicks off with the Dipsea Café, a Mill Valley breakfast institution that keeps one young eater craving steak and eggs and ginormous fluffy pancakes. We’ll also visit Ca’ Momi Osteria in Napa, where our intrepid young foodie scarfs down authentic Pizza Napoletana while watching classic Italian cinema. Finally, we’ll discuss the historic New Mecca Café, popular with Pittsburg locals who crave Mexican comfort food. Watch Check, Please! Bay Area Kids on Tuesdays and the regular Check, Please! Bay Area on Thursdays. And consider snagging a snack; you may find yourself hungry for more than reservations.
100 Days, Drinks, Dishes & Destinations
Premieres Tuesday, October 29, at 7:30pm on KQED 9 Leslie Sbrocco steps away from the Check, Please! Bay Area table with a glass and fork in hand in this new culinary adventure series. She travels the world indulging in delicacies, uncovering local hangouts, meeting artisans and visiting both up-and-coming and acclaimed restaurants, wineries and breweries. In this first episode, she explores close to home in the area surrounding Lake Tahoe in California and Nevada.
DID YOU KNOW? • A Bay Area boy named Frank Epperson accidentally invented the popsicle in 1905. • In 1921, the Waldorf Astoria in New York City became one of the first establishments to welcome children with a kids’ menu. • Before McDonald’s launched its Happy Meal, which offered a toy or gift, in 1978, the now-defunct Burger Chef beat them to it, offering a Fun Meal with prizes.
