NEWS + NOTES

KQED Learn Wins Misinformation Solutions Prize How can students learn to tell the difference between credible information and things like fake news? KQED Learn was recently recognized as a leading organization working to tackle that problem. Chosen from a nationwide pool of applicants, KQED Learn was awarded the inaugural Misinformation Solutions Prize, a grant presented by the Rita Allen Foundation and RTI International in partnership with the Aspen Institute and designed to fuel the development of novel ideas to reduce the spread of misinformation. KQED Learn empowers educators to teach media literacy with awardwinning content, such as the video series Above the Noise and an online platform for students to authentically share their learning. On KQED Learn, student inquiry begins with an Above the Noise video. Each video summarizes a timely topic with key facts while making the content relevant and entertaining to middle school and high school audiences. Then students research the topic for themselves and share their understanding by creating their own media — such as an article, an infographic or a video — that expresses their learning. Join KQED Learn in promoting media-savvy and engaged students by sharing our work with educators. learn.kqed.org Funding for KQED Learn is provided by the Koret Foundation, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, David Bulfer and Kelly Pope, the Silver Giving Foundation, the Stuart Foundation, the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, the Horace W. Goldsmith Foundation, the Rita Allen Foundation and the members of KQED.

RADIO SPECIALS

This Is 2018 Airs Thursday, January 3, at 8pm on KQED 88.5FM If there were a time capsule of American culture in 2018, it would undoubtedly include Childish Gambino’s “This Is America” music video. Childish Gambino’s video touched on the issues of gun violence, mass shootings, racism and discrimination in the United States. Viewed hundreds of millions of times, the video also spawned worldwide cover versions from Nigeria to Iraq. A new documentary from the BBC, This Is 2018 examines the global impact of “This Is America” and asks those who made their own versions why they did so and how they chose their themes, offering insights into the issues that resonate in those countries.

Best of the Best: 2018 Third Coast Festival Airs on Thursday, January 17, at 8pm and Thursday, January 24, at 8pm on KQED 88.5FM Each fall, the Third Coast International Audio Festival draws podcasters, producers and audiophiles from across the world to Chicago for a live podcasting festival, conference and competition honoring the most creative and compelling audio work. The two-part special Best of the Best brings you the 12 stories that were chosen as winners from more than 550 entries and 26 countries, including some from KQED’s very own reporters and producers. Hosted by Gwen Macsai, this year’s Best of the Best also features producer interviews and award ceremony highlights.

STARTER EPISODE

Scene on Radio is a podcast from the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University. The most recent seasons take on two huge problems in our country: discrimination based on gender and discrimination based on race. Start with Seeing White and make your way to the MEN series.

STARTER EPISODE

“My Child’s Hair (Episode 20)”

The Stoop is all about identity and what it means to be black in America. Hosts Leila Day and Hana Baba use personal experiences, humor and curiosity to help us understand universal themes of acceptance, individuality and solidarity.
