Check, Please! Bay Area Kids

KQED Perks Applied Materials Silicon Valley Turkey Trot Start Thanksgiving off on the right foot at the 14th annual Applied Materials Silicon Valley Turkey Trot in downtown San Jose on Thursday, November 22, at 8:30am. Join KQED for festive fun that gives back to the community! The Turkey Trot, which offers a 5k run walk, a 10k run and a kids fun run, supports Silicon Valley charities and has contributed $7.8 million to its benefiting organizations. This year supports the Healthier Kids Foundation Santa Clara County, the Housing Trust Silicon Valley, the Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Clara, San Mateo and Santa Cruz counties and the Health Trust. svturkeytrot.com

Join us for the third installment of KQED Silicon Valley Conversations on Tuesday, December 4, at 7pm for a discussion on the Future of Your Commute. Tonya Mosley, KQED’s Silicon Valley bureau chief, will host a conversation at the 3Below Theaters & Lounge in San Jose about the technological changes we have already seen in our commutes and those we will see in the next five years, ten years, and beyond. As autonomous vehicles, scheduled ride shares and electric scooters become more common, we are changing the way we commute. Will autonomous vehicles be on the roads by 2020? Are the scooters here to stay? What changes can we expect to public transportation? The changes in the Bay Area are evident, but what do these technological advances look like around the state and country? Where are these technologies now and what developments should we look for next? Tickets are $25 for KQED members and $30 for nonmembers. For tickets and more information, visit kqed.org/events.

For the first time, the kids are the critics on Check, Please! Bay Area. It’s the same show you know and love, but with three kids sharing their opinions of each other’s favorite restaurants under the guidance of our host, Leslie Sbrocco. Aged ten through 14 years old, these kids go on the record with their opinions about the good, the bad and the downright delicious! The four-part special premieres Thursday, November 29, at 7:30pm on KQED 9 and continues into December. In August, we asked you to submit your favorite budding foodies, and within two days of the casting call, we received nearly 400 applications from kids throughout the Bay Area. Check, Please! producers invited 100 of those applicants to visit KQED for a fun-filled casting session and studio tour. We were thrilled to meet so many articulate kids — clearly, the Bay Area restaurant scene has inspired a new generation of passionate young diners. Studio tapings with the final 12 kids had the production staff and Leslie in stitches, with no-holds-barred discussions on everything from trying vegan meat substitutes for the first time to learning the proper pronunciation for “bibimbap” to the right amount of heat in Indian cuisine. The premiere episode visits Art’s Cafe, a San Francisco breakfast institution that keeps one young eater craving its signature hash brown sandwiches and Korean bibimbap bowls; the Perle Wine Bar in Oakland’s Montclair Village,

Jo Anne Wallace Retires from KQED

Many listeners probably don’t know this, but at one time KQED Public Radio was devoted to classical music. How did the station transition to its current format? In 1987, KQED’s CEO decided to experiment with transforming KQED Public Radio into an all-news and information station. At the time, FM was considered by the radio industry as a music medium, and all-news had never been tried — on commercial or noncommercial radio. So KQED’s decision was truly revolutionary. And it worked! Today, KQED is ranked No. 1 in the SF radio market and No. 1 among all public radio stations. You were one of the first four female general managers working in public radio when you started your career. What was that like? It was the ’70s and the women’s movement was growing strong. Although I managed a tiny, very experimental radio station at the time, I was invited to a number of NPR and Corporation for Public Broadcasting

meetings. I met many of the leaders of public radio, including the founders of NPR. And I was inspired to learn a huge amount about public radio, its beginnings in the late ’60s, and its mission and aspirations. What was your role in helping Car Talk get NPR distribution? Initially, I asked an NPR senior vice president heading up programming to acquire Car Talk for national distribution. He turned me down, saying NPR listeners wouldn’t be interested in a program about car repair. I then persuaded my boss, Robert Siegel, head of NPR News, to take it on as a “public affairs” show. Robert knew, as I did, that Car Talk was more about relationships than car repair and that the show was enormous fun. He said yes, and the rest is history. What is your proudest achievement? Growing KQED’s news and public affairs service for listeners all across the Bay Area community with programs like Forum and Perspectives. And founding KQED’s statewide news service, The California Report, in 1995.

KQED.org

What made you pursue a career in radio? As a student at Stanford, I discovered the listener-supported radio station KPFA in Berkeley. I had never heard noncommercial radio and was inspired by what I found. Fast forward to 1968, when I moved to Yellow Springs, Ohio, with my former husband who began teaching at Antioch College. I started volunteering at the student-run radio station, WYSO. In 1973, the college asked me to manage the station, with a full-time paid staff of five. I returned to the Bay Area in 1977 to manage the

station that had first ignited my passion for radio, KPFA.

Longtime Vice President and General Manager Jo Anne Wallace will conclude her 28-year tenure at KQED this month. Wallace is a legend throughout public media and at KQED. Without her leadership, KQED Public Radio would sound very different from today. Wallace led the development of such long-running programs as Forum and The California Report, among others. Previously, she worked in news at NPR, where she participated in the development of Weekend Edition Saturday and Sunday and helped acquire iconic programs Car Talk and Fresh Air for national distribution.

Watch six new episodes online this fall

Step behind the camera and follow the journeys of a new generation of storytellers with Behind the Lens, an online video series about bold California indie filmmakers pushing the boundaries of their craft. Each episode focuses on a documentary, narrative or animated film director, capturing the personal experiences that inform their films and the risks they take to bring stories to the screen. In Caracol Cruzando, Pamela Chavez’s directorial debut, an animated short tells the story of a young girl preparing to leave her native Costa Rica for the United States with her family. The illustrator and animator began the passion project in 2014, drawing inspiration from her own migration story. When the film premiered on PBS’ Online Festival this summer, it was against a backdrop of family separations at the U.S.-Mexican border. Chris Metzler, Quinn Costello and Jeff Springer are the Bay Area-based filmmaking team behind Rodents of Unusual Size, a documentary about the giant swamp rats destroying coastal

Louisiana. The film, which comes to PBS in 2019, follows a group of defiant people defending their communities and livelihoods from an invasive species. Drawn to unexpected stories at the edges of society, the filmmakers’ previous credits include cult favorites Plagues & Pleasures on the Salton Sea and Everyday Sunshine: The Story of Fishbone. In narrative film director Nijla Mu’min’s directorial debut, Jinn, a teenage girl’s world turns upside down when her mother converts to Islam — a story based on Mu’min’s own experiences growing up with Muslim parents and navigating her own identity. This festival-circuit hit picked up awards at SXSW and the Blackstar Film Festival, and was acquired by Orion for theatrical release this month. Pete Lee grew up in Taiwan during the golden age of Hong Kong cinema and learned filmmaking by watching and copying Jackie Chan movies. Lee’s Don’t Be a Hero, which premiered at Sundance in 2017, is a narrative short about a middle-aged woman who robs banks during her lunch breaks. Like his main

character, Lee is versatile: he’s also a music video director, working with local acts Meklit and Con Brio. Oakland-based narrative film director Talibah Newman got her start in film assisting director Malcolm Lee on Soul Men. Newman recently directed an episode of a new virtual reality narrative series, The Greenwood Project. In it, she revisits one of the country’s worst, but often overlooked instances of white violence targeting the African American neighborhood in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 1921. After a six-year hiatus from the craft, San Francisco-based narrative film director Eugene Kim is back with a new short film. When his parents lost their business, Kim left indie filmmaking to help provide financial relief for his family. Now Kim returns to filmmaking to direct Cherry, an original story about a young R&B artist in late 1990s Daly City. Behind the Lens is an online video series, available only at kqed.org/behindthelens.

Congratulations to longtime KQED volunteer Gerhart Kneissl, who has been recognized with an Outstanding Volunteer Leadership Award by the National Friends of Public Broadcasting. The 11 honorees represent the very best of volunteers in public broadcasting. After moving to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1996, Kneissl became a financial supporter of KQED and a volunteer upon his retirement in 2004. Kneissl began by answering phones during television and radio pledge drives, but soon assumed the role of shift supervisor, which included such duties as setting up pledge, training new volunteers and assisting volunteers when questions arose. Kneissl has also assisted with such KQED productions as Jacques PÊpin cooking specials and the Check, Please! Bay Area series. On top of that, he is an on-call KQED docent. In 2007, Kneissl was honored with the McNeil Volunteer Award based on numerous nominations from fellow volunteers and from the KQED staff. All who have had the pleasure of meeting and working with Kneissl throughout these years speak of his kindness, his good spirits, his helpfulness and his knowledge of the task at hand. He truly embraces KQED’s mission to celebrate diversity, value lifelong learning and partner with those who share our passion for public service.

On Q November 2018

We’ll Meet Again returns for a second season of compelling human stories of hope, courage and resilience, exploring some of history’s most dramatic events through the personal experiences of those who lived through them. Reported by Ann Curry (pictured), who is also the executive producer, We’ll Meet Again tells the stories of ordinary people caught up in the tides of history who are seeking to be reunited with those who helped them survive these transformational events.

On Q November 2018

Julia Louis-Dreyfus needs to make room on her mantle! The highly decorated actor holds the record for the most Emmys ever won by a single performer — 11 total, six of which were consecutive best-actress wins for her HBO show Veep — as well as a Peabody Award, a Golden Globe and nine Screen Actors Guild awards. Now Louis-Dreyfus will add the most prestigious award in comedy to her collection: the Kennedy Center’s 2018 Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. Watch Louis-Dreyfus receive the award at a nationally televised gala featuring celebrity guests Tina Fey, Stephen Colbert and Jerry Seinfeld.
