The Sunday night comedy lineup will see some changes this fall. Beginning Sunday, September 4, the romantic comedies May to December and The Last of the Summer Wine will take the place of Waiting for God and One Foot in the Grave. In October, the comedy block, including As Time Goes By and Keeping Up Appearances, will move from Sunday to Wednesday and expand to three hours (8-11pm) with the addition of viewer favorites Reggie Perrin, starring Doc Martin’s Martin Clunes, and Are You Being Served? Also in September on KQED Plus, the period drama Lark Rise to Candleford moves from Saturday at 9pm to Monday at 7pm to make room for the new-toKQED British series Priceless Antiques Roadshow. And two popular detective series return to Thursday nights—New Tricks at 8pm and Inspector Morse at 9pm, joining the established British mysteries Agatha Christie’s Poirot, Foyle’s War, and Sherlock Holmes, which air on Fridays. And although we have to say “stay tuned” for announcements about some new detective series coming to KQED, we don’t have to wait to announce that after two years of working to obtain broadcast rights, the U.S. premiere of Martin Clunes’s romantic comedy series William and Mary will begin on KQED Plus in October. The series, in which Clunes (Doc Martin) plays a mortician who falls in love with a midwife, will air Mondays at 8pm, followed at 9pm by the return, appropriately, of Doc Martin. Martin Clunes fans can also look forward to two new specials this fall that explore his passion for nature: Martin Clunes’ Horse Power, a history of the horse, and Man to Manta, in which he scuba dives with manta rays.
KQED’s program director has been busy working to bring more British programs to our Anglophile audience on KQED Plus.

MindShift:
Exploring the Future of Education
Read an expanded version of this interview online, with information about Tina’s journalism background and her experiences interviewing innovators in Silicon Valley. kqed.org/onq-exclusives
How technology is disrupting entrenched cultural stereotypes and beliefs.
How would you describe MindShift’s area of coverage? MindShift focuses on innovations in education, specifically how technology is changing the education landscape as well as how kids learn. What’s been the most interesting thing you’ve recently heard about? I interviewed an expert on educational games, who told me about a video game where students and players would be able to pinpoint tumors on radiology scans. I have to follow up on that! How quickly are school districts adapting to new technology? It depends on the district. For some, it’s not a high priority because they must first deal with a whole different set of issues, like safety of their students in highcrime communities, chronic truancies, debilitating health issues due to poverty, families in a constant state of flux. In those extreme cases, it’s hard to know 4
where to invest the few dollars they get from the state. Negotiating whether to use Facebook or YouTube in school seems like the least of their problems. But even in those schools, technology can actually play a big role in addressing issues like truancy and high dropout rates. If educators can reach out to disenfranchised kids by engaging them in tech tools like using their mobiles phones and Facebook for learning in class, as well as issues that interest them and have direct relevance in their lives, those numbers might actually drop. We might see kids more interested in school, regardless of their economic standing. What makes this a more urgent issue is that the “digital divide” or “participation gap”—whatever term you like—will grow even more if low-income students aren’t taught how to use important tech tools they’ll need to survive outside school. Apart from schools in low-income communities, there still seems to be a
general feeling of apprehension when it comes to using technology in schools: Inertia on the part of school administrators and teachers; the powerful lobbying dollars behind established industries like textbooks and testing that might have to upend their business strategies to keep up with technology changes; fear of allowing the “wild wild west” nature of the Internet into the hands of children; and reticence in investing valuable dollars in passing tech trends. But one of the issues that interests me most is what I call the “control shift” —the idea that parents and teachers no longer have full control over what information children have access to. The Internet has made all manner of information fully accessible to anyone, and that means the roles of teachers and parents as “owners” of information has changed. They have to find a different way to interact with kids and impart value to the information kids have already Googled.

As students and teachers return to school, some will be in the classroom reading from books and writing on blackboards (true, it’s more likely white boards these days) as educators and children have done for generations. Others, however, will be sharing information on iPads, watching instructional videos on YouTube, and studying using apps on their smartphones—often using technology developed by companies in Silicon Valley. Tina Barseghian writes about technology, learning, and the future of education on the KQED blog MindShift—part of a collaboration with NPR that brings blogs covering specialized topics to member stations. Her work has become required reading for many educators, and as a result, it’s one of KQED’s most popular online features. Tina recently answered some questions about MindShift and education innovations.

Not In Our Town
Celebrated sopranos, renowned tenors, and beloved baritones return to KQED for a new set of San Francisco Opera productions, recorded live in high definition at the War Memorial Opera House. This year’s series features Giacomo Puccini’s La Bohème and Tosca and Gaetano Donizetti’s Lucia de Lammermoor and The Elixir of Love. We spoke to David Gockley, general director of San Francisco Opera, about changes that have come to opera since filming began and about this year’s series. Read the entire interview online at kqed.org/onq-exclusives.
The KQED presentation Not In Our Town: Light in the Darkness enters our cultural landscape at a time when hate crime statistics are on the rise and antiimmigrant rhetoric and violence are spreading. The story of the murder of Marcelo Lucero in Patchogue, N.Y., shatters the common belief that “this couldn’t happen where I live.” The town’s commitment to taking action in the face of hate and repairing the fabric of the community provides a blueprint for diverse populations in cities and towns all across the country.
Why these four operas for broadcast in 2011? Because they are fabulously popular pieces, and they’ll generate great viewership. We’re trying to get established in the video field, and at this point we have to play from our strengths—the repertoire and artists.
Has it ever been set in this area before? I believe this is first time. I’m aware of a Wild West staging, but that’s not this!
Don’t miss even more arts programs airing this fall on KQED. On Friday, September 16, at 9pm watch a new program about the San Francisco Symphony’s centennial, and on Sunday, September 18, at 1pm, there’s an encore presentation of Keeping Score. Beginning in October, PBS launches its Fall Arts Festival, featuring a range of artists and performances from nine different communities, including San Francisco.
Operas air Thursdays at 8pm through September 22 on KQED 9 and repeat the following Fridays and Mondays on KQED Life.
Not In Our Town: Light in the Darkness airs Wednesday, September 21, at 10pm on KQED 9 and Thursday, September 22, at 11pm on KQED Plus. Join KQED for a free screening and discussion about Not In Our Town: Light in the Darkness. September 20, 6-9pm at Movimiento de Arte y Cultura Latino Americana, 510 South First Street, San Jose. Watch Not In Our Town, Not in Our School: Palo Alto, September 11, at 6pm and Not In Our Town: Northern California, September 21, at 11pm, both on KQED 9. How have performers reacted to being filmed for broadcast? We allow screenings after each performance we’ve recorded, and performers can go over their parts. There is certainly a greater sensitivity to how they look and act, how their hair looks, and if their costume is as flattering as possible. We tape at least three performances of each production as well as having a rehearsal performance that we can pull
What would you say to someone who’s reticent about watching opera? Try it. Maybe it will register with you, and you may discover a great pleasure and joy in life listening to opera. There’s a context added by music and voice that highlights not only reality and the feelings of the performers but also the reaction a viewer has to it.

Radio Prairie Home Companion is one of the last classic radio shows, with singing, drama, humor, great talent, and creativity. I love the messages from the Ketchup Advisory Board—when life is a bit hard, add some extra ketchup and sing the chorus! And the timing of the broadcast on KQED is great. I can listen before or on my way to whatever I’m doing Saturday night, and I can hear whatever I missed on Sunday after swimming or church.
Podcasts I’ve found podcasts are a very efficient way to get English-language content in foreign countries. This spring I listened to Rick Steves’s podcasts in Italy at tourist spots like the Coliseum and the Vatican, and at museums and on trains. In Florence, I ran into some KQED viewers honeymooning and turned them onto the podcasts! KQED.org I often end up watching QUEST programs online. The website has the same great content as on TV, and it’s very convenient—I can watch anytime.
