Stanley Kubrick exerted complete artistic control over his projects; in doing so, he reconceived the genres in which he worked. Stanley Kubrick: The Exhibition covers the breadth of Kubrick’s achievements, from his early photographs and continuing through his directorial achievements. His films are represented through annotated scripts, production photography, lenses and cameras, set models, costumes, and props. The exhibition is now on view at the Contemporary Jewish Museum. Enjoy free admission to The Contemporary Jewish Museum on Friday, September 9, and Saturday, September 10, from 11am to 5pm when you present a valid KQED MemberCard and photo ID at the museum entrance. Each MemberCard admits one member plus one guest for a maximum of two persons. KQED.org/memberday thecjm.org

Film School Shorts is made possible by the generous support of Maurice Kanbar.
With a lineup of rock star talent, including local Bay Area filmmakers, and incredible performances by Hollywood actors like Patrick Fugit (Gone Girl), Kaori Momoi (Memoirs of a Geisha) and Anna Camp (Mad Men), the fourth sesason is its strongest yet. This year’s eclectic shorts selection transcends the usual or expected and delivers thought-provoking and original work by students at the nation’s top film schools. Unlike in Hollywood, 43 percent of the films in this season of Film School Shorts were directed by women, and many have screened at prestigious film festivals like Sundance, Cannes, Cinequest, Slamdance and SXSW and have received recognition at the Student Academy Awards. Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump are two of the most polarizing presidential candidates in modern history. Now, FRONTLINE goes behind the headlines Trump and Clinton have generated to investigate what has shaped these two candidates, where they came from, how they lead and why they want to take on one of the most difficult jobs imaginable. On September 27, FRONTLINE presents the twohour special “The Choice 2016,” an interwoven investigative biography of Clinton and Trump that draws on dozens of interviews from those who know the candidates best — friends and family, advisors and adversaries — as well as authors, journalists and political insiders. What emerges is a deeply reported narrative arc of both candidates’ lives, side by side, with trustworthy journalism and powerful new insights at a moment when voters are being bombarded with conflicting partisan stories about each candidate. “Both Clinton and Trump have been public figures for most of their lives — in fact, they’ve been active in public life on television for decades,” says filmmaker Michael Kirk. “But we’ve undertaken the most ambitious television 4
biographies of these candidates ever created, going beyond the headlines they’ve generated and the personas they’ve created to explore what has made them who they are as people and as politicians.” He adds: “Both candidates have high unfavorability ratings, and the bitter divide in this country makes it incredibly hard for people to understand how others could support the candidate on the opposite side. After watching ‘The Choice 2016,’ no matter where your allegiance lies, you’ll come away with a new and richer understanding of who the opposing candidates are and how and why he or she has reached this point.” FRONTLINE “The Choice 2016” airs Tuesday, September 27, at 9pm on KQED 9 and will also be available that night at pbs.org/frontline

The Food Lovers’ Favorite Don’t miss all-new episodes of Check, Please! Bay Area. This fall, KQED’s Check Please! Bay Area offers six new episodes featuring a range of dining options, from a simple vegetarian eatery set in a strip mall to a two-star Michelin restaurant with a poetic menu to a tour of flavors from the Caribbean, Italy, Mexico and Germany. In each episode of the James Beard and Emmy Award–winning program, three local diners are cast as restaurant
critics and share their favorite spots. Each guest chooses his or her favorite place to eat and the other two guests visit anonymously — the restaurants are not notified that Check, Please! “reviewers” are dining there. After trying each other’s recommendations, they join host and moderator Leslie Sbrocco to discuss, dispute and celebrate their dining experiences with lively commentary.

Science The Forces of Nature New four-part science series explores the fundamental forces that shape our lives. The forces of nature make Earth a restless planet, but they also turned our ball of rock into a home for life. How did our planet’s ingredients, the chemical elements, come together and take that first crucial step from barren rock to living world? Forces of Nature, a stunning fourpart series co-produced with the BBC,

tells compelling and emotional human and animal stories that illustrate the mysterious forces that shape the universe itself. One episode explores the ways that gravity manifests itself; another delves into the weird and wonderful properties of light and color and how they make life possible. Also examined are the very
nature of Earth and the internal motion that drives our bodies, our weather and some of the most dramatic events on the planet. Forces of Nature airs Wednesdays at 8pm beginning September 14 on KQED 9.

Education
KQED Public Radio KQED Public Television
As media channels and pundits buzz with election news and opinions, students are keenly aware of the issues and challenges that impact their lives now and will impact their futures. They have real concerns and opinions. But too often, their voices go unheard. Letters to the Next President 2.0 (L2P 2.0) is an initiative that engages and connects young people, aged 13 through 18, as they research, write and make media to voice their opinions on issues that matter to them in the coming election. Designed by teachers for teachers and students, the initiative provides free resources and publishing opportunities in a participatory online space. Teachers can invite students to choose their own issues and create content in letter, video, audio and other formats.
L2P 2.0 is a reboot of a project sponsored by the National Writing Project (NWP) and Google during the 2008 election. Then, more than 10,000 students from 800 schools took up the challenge to write publically about issues that mattered to them using the then-new Google Docs platform. This second iteration is again hosted by NWP, in partnership with KQED and a growing list of public media and education partners. Publishing by students began at the end of August and will continue through the 2016 presidential election and into the first 100 days of the new administration. Teachers and mentors interested in signing up and supporting student participation can register online and follow the initiative on social media at @2nextprez and #2nextprez.
Funding for KQED Education is provided by the Koret Foundation, the Cisco Foundation, David Bulfer and Kelly Pope, the Horace W. Goldsmith Foundation, the Mary A. Crocker Trust, and the members of KQED.

What a Wonderful World My mom has always been an optimist. She sees hope when others just see rain. For as long as I can remember, each fall, when temperatures cooled and the autumn rains rolled in over our pasture, she pointed out a symbol of that hope. We would wait, and when the sun broke just the right way, it would emerge. A rainbow! I cling to those now. Rainbows. Because they are harder for her to point out. Over the course of my mom’s life, severe arthritis and a weak heart now make bending and reaching painful. Cooking and laundry are impossible without help. My dad and I have tried home care services and worked shifts ourselves, but Dad is exhausted and they’re becoming housebound. I think it’s time for a change. If an older parent needs daily assistance, maybe they’re not independent anymore. Consider Áegis Living for professional help.
