KQED Brings Ken Burns and Country Music to San Quentin Left to right: Ken Burns, Julie Dunfey, Rahsaan Thomas and Dayton Duncan on stage.
A 2015 article in Rolling Stone noted, “When Merle Haggard sings about life behind bars, he’s playing three chords and the truth.” For Haggard, Johnny Cash and other country musicians, prison experiences played out in their lives — and their music. With his new documentary, Country Music, premiering this month, Ken Burns — joined by Dayton Duncan, Country Music’s writer and co-producer, and Julie Dunfey, co-producer—went inside San Quentin State Prison in July to speak about redemption, destigmatizing incarceration and country music and to show clips from Burns’ film to an inmate audience. The clips focused on Cash and Haggard and their connections to the California penal system. Burns and his team answered questions from Rahsaan Thomas, “inside” co-host of the prison-related podcast Ear Hustle, and from about a dozen inmates who noted they know a lot about Burns’ work; PBS is one of the few channels available in prison. During the event, the Country Music team was surprised — and moved — to meet Curly Ray Martin, an 80-year-old inmate who once shared a cell with Haggard. Haggard taught him how to play bass, and Martin performed with West Coast artists including Rose Maddox before being incarcerated 52 years ago. Country Music, a new eight-part series, airs on KQED beginning September 15. You can also binge the entire 16-hour series on Passport beginning September 15. Follow KQED’s related coverage at kqed.org/countrymusic. Local broadcast of Country Music is made possible by Comcast, Kraw Law Group and Stanford Health Care.
MindShift podcast hosts Katrina Schwartz and Ki Sung.
MindShift, our popular podcast for parents and teachers, is back just in time for a new school year. The four-year-old podcast highlights how educators are addressing some of the trickiest problems in education with heart and creativity. Hosts Ki Sung and Katrina Schwartz asked MindShift’s audience what matters most to them and created an entertaining and powerful six-episode season based on their deepest concerns. The new season is all about bringing joy back into learning and teaching. Discover what it feels like to be a teen coping with anxiety and some of the ways adults and teachers can help; how kids are working with principals to reimagine school lunch offerings and the social dynamics of the lunchroom; and how a greater emphasis on art education can provide new pathways into math, science and reading for third graders. And explore some benefits of unsupervised play and why teachers are focusing on it; how to foster learning about privilege and power at the earliest ages; and how a public school program empowers teenagers to tackle climate change, gun control and immigration, and other big societal issues. New episodes of MindShift are available every other Tuesday through October 29. Find them for free on Apple Podcasts, NPR One or wherever you get your podcasts or visit kqed.org/mindshiftpodcast.

Under a Watchful Eye: How Colleges Are Tracking Students to Boost Graduation Airs Thursday, September 5 at 8pm Colleges need more students to graduate. Many are embracing big data: a tool used by corporations and social media companies to track the clicks and movements of their customers. A growing number of colleges are collecting and crunching vast amounts of data about students to help steer them to courses and majors they can manage — where they’re more likely to do well. But what do students gain and lose when they’re tracked onto a narrow path to graduation? Reporter Jill Barshay of the Hechinger Report teams up with APM Reports to examine the growing use of predictive analytics to get more students across the finish line to deliver more revenue to schools and how that’s reshaping the college experience.
Is Economic Inequality an Existential Threat to the Bay Area? Part I: Housing Airs Wednesday, September 25, at 8pm The Bay Area has a housing crisis in need of urgent action. Homelessness is increasing and low-income workers are forfeiting most of their monthly income to rent, which is rising while wages stay stagnant. There’s a housing shortage, too. The crisis has prompted leaders from private companies, philanthropy, government, think tanks and community organizations to design proposals, sponsor bills and launch coalitions to tackle the issue. Can these solutions outpace the problem and the income inequality at its core? Listen in to a conversation with KQED and SPUR featuring host Mina Kim. We’ll discuss the housing crisis complexities, proposed solutions, Prop 13, and more.

Country Music: A Film by Ken Burns What’s country music, where did it come from, and who are some of the remarkable artists who have created and shaped it? In Country Music, a sweeping new eight-part documentary, Ken Burns turns his lens on this American art form, chronicling the history from its deep and tangled roots in ballads, blues and hymns performed in small settings to worldwide popularity. The film takes you from southern Appalachia’s songs of struggle and faith to the rollicking swing of Texas and from California honky-tonks to Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry. Along the way, it reveals the stories behind the musicians and the music, and features never-before-seen footage and photographs.

• Country music owes a major debt to African American guitarist Lesley Riddle, who collaborated with A.P. Carter, compiling a popular canon of early “hillbilly music” and greatly influencing the Carter Family sound. • Singer Kris Kristofferson graduated from San Mateo High School and went on to become a Rhodes scholar. • Incarcerated at San Quentin, Merle Haggard considered escaping, but was convinced by other inmates to focus on his songwriting and make something of himself.
