WINDOW

AO NANG BEACH At 20 km from Krabi Town Ao Nang Beach is the most developed of Krabi’s many beaches. Ao Nang Beach is famous for it’s white sand beaches and large limestones karsts towering over the eastern edges. All of your accommodation, shopping and service needs can be found here. It is the hub from which to plan your trip to sea as well as to any number of the nearby islands. NOPPHARAT THARA BEACH Just around the corner from Ao Nang, yet still undeveloped with only a few resorts, bars and restaurants, Noppharat Thara beach offers a bit more “local” feel than it’s sister Ao Nang. Attractive because of its natural setting, this is where local youngsters and families gather during sunset and on weekends. At low tide, walk out together with millions of small crabs on the sandy pathways to a small island on the western edge of the beach. KLONG MUANG BEACH A further 20 km away from Ao Nang Klong Muang is the up-market side of Krabi, the place to be if you are after a peaceful and hassle free holiday. Catering to families and couples, it is here that you really get that well deserved repose, surrounded by pristine nature. KOH LANTA BEACHES Koh Lanta has a wide selection of resorts for all tastes and pockets. Koh Lanta Yai island has long stretches of gleaming white sandy beaches and shallow emerald waters. Lined with tropical vegetation, a private spot is never more than a short walk away..

12

TUBKAEK BEACH Next to Klong Muang Beach, Tub Keak beach is another place to just get away; long, clean and powerful, the area boasts breathtaking views over the Koh Hong archipelago and provides for wonderfully charming sunsets. From Tubkeak beach you can venture inside the National Park and try the nature trail “Naga trek” to one of the most spectacular viewpoints in Krabi. RAILAY AND TONSAI BEACHES Are split and separated from Ao Nang by a limestone mountain range. Railay has two sides, east and west, and its settings are simply marvelous: crystal clear waters, pure sandy beaches, lush mountains and rocky islands emerging from the sea. Both beaches are known all over the world for their famous climbing routes. They can only be reached by boat, a 15 minute ride from Ao Nang or 30 minutes from Krabi Town. Enjoy a cocktail in one of the beach bars, visit the Phranang Cave, challenge yourself on a rock climbing or ‘deep water solo’ cliff jumping into the sea, hike the limestone trail to a lagoon or the viewpoint or simply chill out and watch the day pass you by.

KOH PODA This is the iconic island of Krabi and the first and most dramatic one you can see from Ao Nang beach. Hop on a longtail boat - the local wooden boats with their picturesque prow - and sail away surrounded by turquoise water.. CHICKEN ISLAND This should be next on your list as it is right next to Koh Poda. From the right angle when passing Chicken Island (Koh Gai) you can catch a glimpse of a chicken’s neck and head, some would argue more like that of a turkey but it’s up to you. The second island, Koh Tub, is connected to Chicken Island by a sandy isthmus and people can walk from one to another at low tide.

ON KRABI

KOH JUM & KOH SIBOYA Both are unspoiled tropical hideaways that have a unique atmosphere. Tune in to the slow culture here, imbibe the peace and recharge your batteries with the soundtrack of lapping waves. KOH HONG This island archipelago demands everyone’s attention as it is one of the highlights of Krabi Province. The Archipelago, a group of limestone islands with many hidden caves and lagoons makes it perfect for snorkeling and exploring. Visit Lading and Pakbia islands before Koh Hong as they are much less visited and sport a blend of both lush jungle and tropical waters. Koh hong is usually crowded until 3pm so we recommend visiting other Lading and Pakbia in the morning, then going to Koh Hong after the crowds have started to leave. KOH PHI PHI Private bays, limestone cliffs, waters rich in marine life and caves where swallow’s birds nests are harvested are all here on the island that Leonardo Di Caprio once rolled his hot bod in while filming ‘The Beach’ at the now iconic Maya Bay.

April-May| 2016

KOH LANTA The developing island at the southern end of the province known for its prime sunset views, heaps of activities and glimpses into sea gypsy life. Koh Lanta is also a National Park that comprises many local islands surrounded by coral reefs, such as Koh Ngai, Koh Mook and the remote Koh Rok. LIMESTONE MOUNTAINS These iconic karsts characterize most of the inland area of Krabi, the most spectacular being the crags of Sai Tai, in between Ao Nang and Krabitown. Susaan Hoi is a 40 million yearold seashell cemetery; once a large swamp where freshwater crustaceans proliferated, today it’s home to 40 centimeter thick, shell encrusted limestone slabs, a geologically rather unique and is only 5Km from Ao Nang beach.

KHAO PHANOM BENCHA NATIONAL PARK At 20 km from Krabi Town, the Khao Phanom Bencha national park comprises waterfalls, streams, lush forests and caves. It is home to all kind of flora and wildlife and to the highest mountain in the region from which it takes it’s name. One of the features of the park is Huay Thoi Waterfall where water runs down onto several huge pools. TARNBOK KHORANEE NATIONAL PARK Located in the north of the province, Tarnbok Khoranee national park is made up of limestone mountains, verdant tropical forest, caves and beautiful islands. It is well known kayaking explorers as there are a number of tributaries curving into a number of small caves boasting ancient cave paintings. SA MORAKOT OR THE EMERALD POOL Truly a natural wonder of Krabi: a pond of turquoise water with an average temperature of 30-40°C fed by a hot spring in the middle of the jungle in Klong Thom district, 70 kilometers from Ao Nang. HOT SPRINGS Situated in Klong Thom district, These natural hot springs are natures jacuzzis. They melt away tensions, relieve the body and mind with the fresh spring water running over mineral enriched limestone rocks.

TENS OF THOUSANDS FLOCK TO SACRED TATTOO CEREMONY OUTSIDE BANGKOK

COOL SUMMER SPA OFFER AT SO SPA WITH L’OCCITANE, SOFITEL KRABI PHOKEETHRA GOLF & SPA RESORT

A Thai sacred tattoo ceremony drew large crowds of believers over the weekend, including many Westerners, to a Buddhist temple known for its lineage of revered masters. A heavily tattooed Thai man trembles as he releases a fullthroated animal scream. He struggles to his feet, seemingly against his will, and charges forward, only to be restrained by the brute force of temple officials. The man is experiencing a trance state commonly witnessed at an annual ceremony that pays respect to a late sacred Thai tattoo master and former temple abbot. Tens of thousands of believers over the weekend crowded onto the grounds of Wat Bang Phra in Nakhon Pathom, some 50 kilometres west of the Thai capital, to re-energize their tattoos’ spiritual powers. They gathered under a sweltering sun, sitting cross-legged on plastic mats, some with their heads bowed in meditation, and waited hours fora blessing from the temple’s current tattoo masters. The spectacle of followers in trance states was constant. They roared like tigers, howled like monkeys and shouted like men possessed, assuming the animal powers of their magical ink.

Durian Durian. That famous thorny, smelly, heavy, eggy tasting fruit is back on the shelves. Find your way inside it’s thick outer shell and you’re in for a surprise. Some say it is the smelliest fruit in the world, some say it is the tastiest - it’s all in the eye of the beholder, right? But those signs at hotels, buses and airport banning its entrance onto their premises make it seem more like the former. A tropical fruit you won’t find in your local grocery store back home, but you can discover during the months of April-June at almost every fruit stall in Thailand. A favorite among many South East Asian locals. (thai’s, Malaysian’s and Singaporeans). Some compare the smell of fresh durian with rotting flesh, some say it’s more like rotten eggs. On a good day some might equate this pungent fruit with that of a robust Limburger cheese, all in all the votes are in; durian smells BAD. But it’s something to try, right? You’re out of your comfort zone, you’re in a new land, you’re discovering new experiences, so why not give it a try? It’s a great fruit and many locals will eat only durian for a meal as it is a very heavy and full of good fats. In terms of filling you up it is said to have the density of a coconut. A single durian contains enough fat to keep you full for hours. Durian now comes in many shapes and forms, being made into chips for your on-the-go enjoyment, and even drinks (mostly sold at only souvenir shops). So take your pick whats your pleasure, flesh, chip or drink?

SONKRAN Usher in the new year in style by getting wet in the world’s biggest water fight.

20

www.krabi-magazine.com

FESTIVAL In Thailand, the hottest months of the year are March and April. During these months temperatures can soar into the 40s, and in 2012 the temperature peaked at 48C!! It also happens to fall in line with the welcoming of the New Year, so why not throw a party? But this time it’s not about champagne and cake, it’s too darn hot for that stuff. Let get outside and get wet!

April-May | 2016

21

A

ll across Thailand, Sonkran is celebrated from the densely populated areas of Bangkok to the countryside of Esan and everywhere in between. It’s all about having fun and smiling, as you soak and get soaked in return. In Chiang Mai, the festival is so immense that elephants are brought into the city with large blue buckets of water which they suck up and spray out into the crowd. It’s quite a sight to see, along with a street full of people soaking each other with squirt guns and buckets of water, smearing white paste in each others’ faces, laughing, singing, shouting and hugging each other. Many would say “only in Thailand”, and that’s true because not only do the police not regulate these activities, but they actually partake in the festivities. It’ s a party from the North to the South! A small part of us here at Krabi Magazine are hoping you landed in Thailand completely unaware of this festival as it’s a terrific surprise! Sonkran is a wonderful way to usher in the new year, the party is probably the biggest on the planet involving some 50 million people and grows ever year! If you are reading this prior to the festivities get ready for quite a party, pack your electronic valuables in a dry bag (or just leave them in your hotel room) and head out into the street. Don’t worry, you wont get far without getting wet! DON’T PLAN TO GET ANYWHERE FAST KEEP YOUR ELECTRONICS SAFE DON’T RIDE A MOTORCYCLE WEAR GOGGLES IF YOUR HAVE SENSITIVE EYES SMILE! RELAX ON A BUDGET Babaji hostel centrally located on Ao Nang’s main road is a great place to sleep on a budget. It’s quiet, peaceful, clean and affordable. The owner of Babaji wanted to create a place where backpackers could feel comfortable and at home yet do this on a budget and not break the bank. Since it’s inception, numerous changes have been made at Babaji hostel making it more warm, cozy and homelike. One of the many additions to the ever-evolving home of Babaji is the installation of a pool table centrally located for all patrons to socialize around. A young Danish chef joined the crew of Babaji recently, offering a more western approach to the dining options, feeling and general ambiance of the hostel. There was recently a grass roof installed over the central grounds of the hostel’s dining and lounging area which soaks up the suns rays and repels all heat, leaving the whole of Babaji cool and comfortable throughout the day.

24

Welcoming all travelers, Babaji hostel offers a variety of accommodation options of patrons. Large open dorm rooms for those who are looking to meet other adventurous travelers, as well as private rooms for after a bit more privacy. The new Danish cook also whips up a mean Danish breakfast for those looking for something a little closer to home on their breakfast plate. If you’re hankering for thick bread, rich coffee, salty sil, marinated vegetables and of course traditional Danish sausages, then you’re in luck as Babaji’s breakfast menu is something to try. Come and see what it’s all about at Babaji. 095-026-1939 BABAJIHOSTEL@GMAIL.COM WWW.BABAJIHOSTEL.COM

DIVE IN

Krabi’s coastline spreads over 300 kilometers, making it a great place to find new beaches and get wet while exploring the underwater paradise that surrounds us. Over 150 islands dot the coastline offering a plethora of safe havens for fish and coral to live and grow. A number of these islands are only rock outcroppings without any beaches making them ominous and stunning to look at and great for snorkelling in to experience the amazing underwater life.

The underwater world is rich in life but it is up to us to help preserve it for future generations, so please be considerate with your trash whether you are on a boat or on a beach and always look for a trash bin to dispose of your waste. Thank you!

APRIL

TIDE TABLES KRABI

There are many soft and hard corals that grow underwater and provide small cracks and crevices for fish and small crustaceans to hide in. If you have the breath in you and have the desire you can head out on a snorkeling expedition and dive in to see what you can find!

If you prefer to go a little deeper and stay longer, you can try SCUBA diving. The entire bay area is quite shallow (relatively speaking) with most diving locations less than 30 meters in depth. The life underwater is rich and incredibly diverse, with hundreds of different fish, corals and mammals to discover. There are blacktop reef sharks, leopard sharks, numerous parrot fish, pipe fish, nudibranchs and of course the friendly clown fish (or more commonly known as nemo fish).

It’s

that time of the year once again when we enter into one of the most exciting seasons here in amazing Thailand. The weather has now begun to shift from the cooler weather as temperatures rise throughout the land. Nationals and visitors see April as the month that Thais - and anyone willing to participate - join in to celebrate the Thai New Year. To celebrate this iconic event and keeping with the Buddhist/ Hindu calendar, Thailand ensues in the world’s largest water fight. It is great that water plays a special and symbolic role in the Thai New Year and as a reflection of blessing. This celebration continues to add to a people who are rich in symbolic traditions. I also believe that Thais understand the importance of water as used in these rituals, for this holiday resembles a time of purification and the washing away of sins or bad luck. For a moment, let’s take a look at why water is important to everyone throughout the world, as well as the longevity of the human body. Water is one of the most essential elements which provide us the ability to live.

www.krabi-magazine.com

• Water comes to us in many forms, not only through a faucet. All fruits and vegetables contain a large percentage of pure, naturally filtered water. So eat plenty of fresh, uncooked fruits and vegetables. • Every process of the body requires the use of water for proper functioning. Keep this in mind the next time you consider avoiding drinking a refreshing glass of water. • If you feel dehydrated; you are. Be mindful to not allow yourself to become dehydrated. Always keep that water nearby. • Water is lost during exercise. It’s not only about fat loss during your training. You’re losing more water than fat. Stay hydrated whenever participating in physical activities. • Only in extreme cases do people survive without water for long periods of time. A person cannot survive more than a few days without water. Don’t test it; it could be deadly. • Although coffee has plenty of water, the caffeine can act as a mild diuretic. This will hinder the water from playing its important role in body function. • Water removes toxins from the body. The toxins can be removed from our feces, sweat and urine (all which contain water). • Water carries oxygen to every cell in our body. Without oxygen (the most immediate need of our body) our tiny cells would simply dry up, die and our body would cease to function. • Your water intake depends greatly on how much physical activity you perform. Although you can drink too much water this is pretty difficult to do. • Water regulates your body temperature. Your car does the same thing. •Water helps to absorb food. Eat slowly; drink a bit of water after your meal. Guess what? You are less likely to over eat because your tummy will feel full. • Water reduces muscle fatigue, releases fat cells and helps kidneys as well as keeping your digestion active. • Water is likened to a shock absorber to the brain, your eyes, spinal cord and even babies in the womb.

The Best View in Town By Vanessa Workman www.theislanddrum.com

InThailand each province has a capital city of the same name. A key geographical fact which I often forget. So when I began planning my first trip to Krabi, the online search engines opened up the flood gates of accommodation choices and they were seemingly scattered everywhere. After asking a friend to recommend an easy Krabi introduction destination, she recommended Aonang Beach. Trust me, that was immensely helpful in itself, although there was still an abundance of choices.

But one resort in particular caught my eye, and that was Aonang Cliff Beach Resort and Spa and their Panorama Suites. Ok, it was the online photos of the infinity pool that initially caught my eye, because I’m a sucker for a luxury pool. But when I saw the resort’s panoramic view, it was one of those amazing scenic vistas that shouts, “Wish you were here!” And I definitely did wish I was there. So my decision was made. For me, arriving in a new destination is usually a mix of excitement and mild anxiety. Having a real knack for miscommunications, I often get unanticipated side tours of cities or dropped off at the wrong place. Much to my dismay. So when I was greeted by a staff member from Aonang Cliff Beach Resort at Krabi International Airport I breathed a sigh of relief. This holiday was definitely starting off on a positive note. And to follow that with a short, but picturesque drive through Krabi township and an ultra-smooth check-in? I had hit the vacation trifecta! My brief check-in was accompanied by a much appreciated chilled glass of mango juice and a cool towel. Afterwards, I was escorted to my room located in the newly built addition, the Panorama Suites. I assumed my room was perched on a hillside somewhere, yet a few steps here and there, April-May | 2016

with a few strategically placed elevators allowed for a relaxed upward ascent. Passing shady trees, which were cleverly incorporated within the architectural structures, and the glistening infinity pool, I soon realized that this resort was surprisingly quiet. The cacophony from the busy street front a distant memory. And as if by magic, I was suddenly standing on my private balcony gazing at the rather hypnotic horizon of the Andaman Sea. The adjacent room an immediate blur. That’s the effect of the Panorama Suites. Snapped back to reality with my escort’s quick orientation, my luxurious room came into focus. With 32 rooms to choose from, my spacious room was decorated in a modern Thai style with earthy hues and colourful noncomplicated accents. With a massive king-sized bed, a cosy lounging settee, and an ample work space area, the floor plan was obviously well thought out with guest comfort and convenience the priority. No crawling under a bed to find an electrical outlet, that’s for sure! And the suite was absolutely tricked out with all my favourite amenities. Not only did they have a mini-bar (well stocked I might add), the electric tea kettle was one upped by my own personal expresso machine serving Doi Chang coffee to boot!

39

The bathroom was a sparkling expanse of white tile with ultra modern fixtures complimenting separate his and her sinks. Just a large glass panel separated the area from the room, leaving the panoramic views of the impressive limestone cliffs and the sparkling Andaman Sea unobstructed. A choice of a rain shower or a luscious soak in my own private balcony tub further sweetened the deal. How does one even consider sightseeing when enjoying such luxuries? Well in my case, I didn’t. I was quite happy to mark the passing of time from my very comfortable balcony sun-lounger and enjoy this resort to the fullest. From the incredible saltwater infinity pool, the rooftop bar, with its perfect sunset views, to their multiple onsite culinary choices and top notch spa, everything I could possibly want was just a stone’s throw away from my boudoir. A dream resort that was brought to fruition by Wolfgang Grimm, the hotel group’s managing director, who I had the great pleasure to meet in person. When asked about his design philosophy for the development of the Panoramic Suites, Wolfgang responded passionately, “This new addition is all about showcasing how tourism can (and should) coexist with nature, with as little impact on your surroundings as possible.” Grimm continued, “By being conscious of our setting and incorporating the finer points into our hotel environment, that is what it’s all about. Up here you definitely do not feel like you are in the heart of Aonang—it’s all about the birds, nature, and the unobstructed, magnificent views. This is what Krabi is all about.” For more information, or to make a reservation visit www.aonangcliffbeach.com Aonang Cliff Beach Resort & Spa also offers its guests a private beach experience. Complimentary daily shuttles run between the hotel and Andamana Beach Club, giving guests truly the best of both worlds—city and sand! At Andamana Beach Club you can rest on comfortable beanbags, swing in a hammock, or dig your feet into the sand. The beach club has an on-site restaurant, bar, and masseuse. Other activities include horseback riding along the beach and long tail sunset cruises. Join us for a quieter, more natural Thai beach experience.

A Stone’s throw away, KLONG MUANG MINI GUIDE

Tiny rocks, drift wood, pine trees and sand that’s what we call a beach. Although Ao Nang beach has the convenience of all the bars and restaurants, sometimes it can be a little too much, especially in the high season when the tourist numbers are at their peak. Klong Muang beach is located only a short 15 minutes drive from Ao Nang and is a more peaceful alternative. Taxi’s and tuk tuk’s are everywhere in Ao Nang and flagging one down to take you to Klong Muang beach is a breeze. If you want to make your own way, try renting a scooter or car. It’s a simple procedure and gives you complete freedom of your movements (085-069-4752). To get to Klong Muang is relatively easy. Flip to the map in this magazine to guide you, and if you pass an elephant camp, you are in the right direction! Once you arrive at Klong Muang beach you will be greeted by a small fleet of boats parked off to the far left of the beach. These are the squid boats that work the waters nightly. You can actually see their green and white glowing lights from almost all of the beaches in Krabi all night long.

Relax and enjoy the beach, if you want to explore more head west (or to the right) and the beach will wrap around that pinnacle and continue on to a bit smaller but less crowded area. It’s a great place to spend an idle day, and there are plenty of restaurants around the area where you can get both Thai and Western food to either eat in or take away to the beach for the ultimate in lazy lunching!

In

1950, when H.M. King Bhumibol assumed the throne, along with his wife H.M. Queen Sirikit, much of the traditional Thai dresses and costumes had been lost due to the influence of Western style dresses which had been introduced over the previous century or so. In part because of this tragedy that surrounded his ascension, King Bhumibol made it a priority to institute reforms and changes that would enhance and solidify a national Thai identity. As a part of this, Queen Sirikit set about establishing a national Thai costume. By pulling from the few historical photographs that existed, writings and some remaining royal fabrics and garments, she worked with a number of French designers to come up with eight different looks for women and essentially one look for men that would become recognized as traditional Thai clothing.

Thai Phra Ratcha Niyom Costume collection included Thai Ruean Ton ( ชุดไทยเรือนต้น ), Thai Chitlada ( ชุดไทยจิตรลดา ), Thai Amarin ( ชุดไทย อมรินทร์ ), Thai Boromphiman ( ชุดไทยบรมพิมาน ), Thai Chakkri ( ชุดไทยจักรี ), Thai Chakkraphat ( ชุดไทยจักรพรรดิ์ ), Thai Dusit ( ชุดไทยดุสิต ), Thai Siwalai ( ชุดไทยศิวาลัย ).

Traditional Thai dress .. what first comes to mind? Investigating the matter, as well as becoming acquainted with two talented designers, I found out. by. Aleshka Nazarova

44

www.krabi-magazine.com

I spoke with Jirayu Kladthim (Group) and Jirayu Chunhamookda (Aon) designers of Jirayu Couture from Bangkok. They presented their dresses for Krabi Magazine and I had some questions for them. Aleshka: Where did you study? Khun Group and Aon: We have bachelor’s degrees in Fashion designing from Rajamangala University of Technology, Thanyaburi. Aleshka: Why did you choose this kind of profession? Who gave you the inspiration for this kind of job? Khun Group and Aon: During our four-years of studies, we met and developed a feel for all different kinds of fashion. After graduation, we spent a few years in a boutique shop in Thailand, gaining further experience and feel for the industry. We realized couture was our preferred style and we decided to start a wedding shop to make use of our experience and ideas to make the dream dress come true for every bride. Aleshka: What do you mean when you speak about traditional Thai dress? Which style are you referring to? Khun Group and Aon: The traditional Thai dress is a mirror of our culture. Every detail reflects who we are. Traditional dresses should show refinement, elegance and personality. Aleshka: Let’s talk about traditional Thai dress, Can you explain to me what the Emperor of Thailand dress is like? Khun Group and Aon: The dresses name comes from The Emperor Thailand. We got the inspiration from Queen Sirikit Kitiyakara when we saw her wear a traditional Thai dress with fantastic decorations and a refined delicate look. April-May | 2016

“ We believe when you wear a traditional Thai dress you will feel and look unique, wonderful and charming.” Aleshka: Do you work with famous magazines, artists or singers? If yes, with who? Khun Group and Aon: We have worked with We, Bride, and I Do magazines as well as Thai stars like Sririta Jensen, Natapohn Tameeruks, Mint Chalida Vijitvongthong, Janie Tienphosuwan, Kimberley Anne Woltemas Tiamsiri and Nonthawan “Maeya” Thongleng as well as Miss Thailand World 2014. Aleshka: What are you plans for future designs? Any dreams to realize? Khun Group and Aon: We are planning to make more traditional Thai dresses and focus on making them easier and more comfortable to wear. We also plan to introduce more styles of other traditional garments. As far as our dream is concerned it is simple, to continue making dresses for Thais and foreigners alike. I think what to choose for your wedding ceremony, a traditional Thai wedding dress is something like magic. I wish you the best and hope you are able to fulfill your dream designers of Jirayu Couture. RECYCLE, REUSE, REINVENT, KRABI RESORT IS LEADING KRABI’S WAYS TO CONSERVE THEIR CARBON FOOTPRINT.

A resort no matter the size carries with it an ecological footprint, from the food and energy it consumes to the construction and heating/air conditioning costs the impact can be huge. Resorts are truly stunning works of art, they come in all shapes and sizes but most of them carry with them the same burden, a large taxation on the environment they stand on. Wouldn’t it be great if there was a way in which a resort could live and operate while consuming relatively few resources and impacting our planet minimally? Well there is. A number of resorts around the globe have started adopting a more ecologically or “green” mindset. As the world is changing and global warming becomes more apparent a number of resort are changing their ways. The international mindset is moving towards sustainability and resorts that adopt these measures are not only saving themselves millions of baht in operating costs but they are actually developing a marketing edge to service the new international mindset.

Krabi Resort is well aware of this growing trend as members of the management were instrumental in setting up the first ever Green conference hosted in Krabi last November. “It just makes sense” the assistant manager of E-commerce tells, “with the information and knowledge that is so readily available, why not do something? We save money and the environment at the same time.” Krabi Resort is one of the first resorts in Ao Nang to focus it’s energy and practices towards s a greener future. Krabi Resorts owners have been instrumental in developing Krabi to where it is today, so they hope to inspire a change in hotel policy among other establishments. So a push from this management group could go a long way in changing the mindset in Krabi.

“It’s actually easier and faster than one might think”

ne of the main things Krabi Resort focuses it’s energy on is cleaning products. The amount of chemicals need to clean the entirety of Krabi Resort’s, lobby, rooms, restaurants and everything else is just enormous. There is a new technology (well not that new) called EM which stands for Effective Microorganisms. It is the process of using natural probiotics instead of harmful and destructive chemicals to clean away harmful bacteria. EM, a process of breaking down plant matter into a usable detergent that can clean virtually any surface. Krabi resort uses EM to clean their bathrooms, lobby, restaurants and many other areas of the resort. The EM they use is manufactured off site about 5 kilometers from the resort at a small farm. The organic waste products from the restaurant and hotel grounds are separated from non-biodegradable products and brought to the farm. At the farm they are mixed with some condensed EM Syrup which begins the process of breaking down their matter and multiplying the probiotics. They are left to stand with the condensed syrup for a period of 40-60 days, then mixed with water, the liquid and solids are then separated and the water can be used as a cleaning detergent. If there is a big need for soil, then the organic waste can be added to a compost pile full of worms which turns the vegetation into nitrogen rich dirt. That dirt can then can be used as fertilizer back on the resorts grounds. This is only one of the many things that Krabi Resort is doing to reduce it’s carbon footprint. They are also in the process of growing a number of their own fruit and vegetables. A mushroom house was built on the resort’s grounds and grows an average of 200 Kg of mushrooms a year. These mushrooms are used at the resort for both staff and guests. At the on site resort garden there are also a number of other vegetables grown such as lettuce, eggplants, green beans, radishes and many more, all are used to prepare meals for the staff and guests alike. These gardens act as not only a means to provide food but also offer guests at the resort a place where they can walk and relax while surrounded by organic healthy vegetation. Times are changing, we are the generation that is the first to feel the effects of global warming and the last generation to do something to slow it down. It is important for all of us to try and make a difference whenever possible, so please bring your own bags to the grocery store, have a garden, bike to work or carpool, install solar panels at your house. The list of things you can do which will make a difference is huge, let’s all to do our part.

1. ECUADOR Ecuador is the best destination for couples to spend their lives together in. With leisure options ranked positively by 94 percent of respondents along with being the most welcoming destination to foreigners, it is hardly surprising that Ecuador is home to the happiest expats. As job security is mediocre, however, it is less a destination for career-focused expats and more appealing to those ready to settle down for good.

2. COSTA RICA Three in four expats who met their partner before their relocation moved to Costa Rica together — a significant percentage given the global average is only 44 percent. The friendly locals and highly rated work-life balance are just some of the reasons why expats decide to move to this tropical paradise. Unlike many other destinations that are mostly career-focused, the most popular reasons for moving to Costa Rica is for a better quality of life and a thirst for adventure.

3. MALTA Surprisingly, a considerable number of foreigners move to Malta for love, with 14 percent compared to the global average of 10 percent. Ranked first overall in the Working Abroad Index, as well as in its subcategories job satisfaction and work-life balance, the country proves to be perfect for those looking to improve their career prospect and romantic relationship simultaneously.

4. ISRAEL Israel is the fourth most popular country for families. With 79 percent of expat parents highly satisfied with the education options available and 94 percent their children’s’ general well-being positively. Not only are expat families some of the happiest here, Israel is also home to some of the world’s most harmonic relationships

5. PHILIPPINES Filipinos seem to be easy to connect to: 93 percent regard the friendliness of the local population positively and a striking 66 percent of non-single expatriates living in the country are also in a relationship with a local resident. A popular destination with retirees, the majority are aged 51 or older, with almost three out of four expats living in the Philippines being men. The philippines are one of the top 10 most welcoming countries for expatriates in general, it is no surprise that many of them have moved to Philippines to live with their partners.

6. INDONESIA Ranked sixth for personal finance, Indonesia appeals most to expats looking to make the most out of their money or for those looking for adventure. It seems expats here are not only well off, but also receive a warm welcome, with 86 percent regarding the local attitude towards foreign residents as friendly. In a similar vein, two in five expats have also found love locally and are in a relationship with an Indonesian.

Not only is Panama ranked in the top ten countries for expat destinations overall, it is actually the sixth most preferred destination for men. While many expats moved there for a better quality of life or were motivated by financial reasons, love doesn’t seem to have been a main deciding factor regarding the relocation. In fact, the majority of those currently in a relationship and living in Panama are together with somebody from their country of origin and moved there together. With the country being ranked in the top 10 for personal happiness, a move to this beautiful place does not seem like a huge sacrifice though.

7. PANAMA

8. THAILAND In this tropical paradise, more than half the expat respondents who are still single agree that the expat lifestyle in Thailand does not impact having a relationship negatively. For those who are in a committed relationship, a relatively high percentage are together with a local resident whom they met after their move. Much like in the Philippines, the majority of expats living in Thailand are men.

9. PORTUGAL Considerably more women are charmed by life in Portugal, or at least there is a significant higher percentage of female expats to be found there (62 vs. 38 percent). Their admiration for the country comes to no surprise as it is considered the third most welcoming country for expats overall and ranks fifth in both, the Quality of Life and the Ease of Settling In Index. Although only just over half of the expats living here are in a committed relationship, they are some of the happiest, with almost nine out of ten of them overall satisfied with their love life.

10. MEXICO Mexico seems to be one of the most welcoming countries for expats, with over 60 percent of respondents going so far as to rate the friendliness of the local population as very good. What is more, whether it is the variety of leisure options or the friendliness of the local residents, expats here belong to the happiest in the world. Although Mexico ranks relatively poorly for working abroad, many moved because they wanted to live in this particular country or where looking for a better quality of life. And with 80 percent of expats content with their relationship, it seems they made the right choice.

Nong Thale River Residence A Perfect Place for a Passionate Gardener Look around at the wonderful world of Krabi. This is a place where shimmering blue oceans and Jurassic scenery of towering limestone karsts meet and create magic. It is a place of such outstanding natural beauties that some, once they have discovered it, decide to make it their home and build a new life in it - or, for that matter, create a garden. This is exactly what Barb Anthony did, a California born and raised gardener and a natural outdoor person. Younger studies of botany and marine biology continued to peak her interest throughout life. After relocating to Texas with her husband Greg, Barb studied and became a certified Master Gardener in Texas then started her own business Native Nurseries of Texas. One of the original officers and organizers of the Native Plant Society of Texas Denton Chapter, Barb also assisted the University of North Texas in propagation research and prairie restoration. When queried about their move to Thailand, she says, “In retirement, we found a place where we can fulfill our dreams of having a tropical garden. ” When asked what made them choose Nong Thale River Residence, the brainchild and the passion of Dutch building engineer Mat Ruijters, she ponders, “There is a lovely crystal clear river running through the land that immediately attracted us, but what’s more: here you have fabulous, expansive views of the surrounding mountains. The views allow you to feel an incredible freedom of space. We liked the large lots because they enable you to landscape and create a private garden while allowing for imagination; the eye needs to explore. I like curves, bends, ups and downs, so when you go round a corner, the garden invites you in, enticing you to explore and discover little surprises here and there.”

58

www.krabi-magazine.com

She tells us, that this is her first tropical garden, and though she had lived in the tropics before, she had never done any gardening in the tropics. What are the challenges of gardening here in the tropics, here in Krabi, I want to know? “It’s the soil,” she says, “the soil is the challenge. Though nutrient rich, it is full of rocks that the roots can’t get through, and it has layers of clay that can choke or rot your plants. Once you amend the soil, you have a perfect foundation to create a paradise to live in. Everything grows so fast here, it is absolutely amazing, even the trees grow fast; it feels as if you had landed in the middle of the story Jack and the Beanstalk!

He is a wonderful resource who loves to share his knowledge and invites everyone to his garden. Most passionate gardeners are keen to learn and ready to share what they know.” Mat Ruijters, developer of River Residence, remembers meeting Barb and Greg for the first time, “When Barb and Greg first came here, I immediately understood that they knew a lot about gardening and that Barb did not just have extensive knowledge but was also highly creative.” I was curious to see the concept she described to me take shape. The result of her work has surpassed all my expectations, and if I ever was in favor of a garden consisting solely of a few trees and lawn, this has changed now. She really has a vision, she is an artist, and everyone here in River Residence is more than happy when she lets her genius spill over into one of our gardens,” he grins. Indeed, Mat’s own garden is beginning to look as if it has received more than just a little inspiration from her. “My garden and I have a symbiotic relationship, I live through my garden and my garden lives through me. I awake to singing birds, sleep to croaking frogs, and spend my days exploring the garden for new surprises. Life is an adventure,” says Barb.

When she sets out to design a garden, does she have an overarching concept, a guideline she always follows, I want to know? “Yes, I do,” she says, and smiles. “My garden has to perfectly blend with nature. I want it to look as if a few birds flew by and dropped seeds…” She smiles. We sit quietly for a while, and I understand what she means; it is all perfectly harmonious, looks as if it had been there always; a little sanctuary that only needed to be discovered by someone, a kindred spirit. “I wanted it to feel like you were living in nature. I wanted everything: the plants, birds, frogs, butterflies, bees, lizards, and the fish in the ponds”, she continues, “but I wanted it to be balanced. She points to an aromatic jasmine at the corner of the terrace, “A garden is different in different areas. You need different areas for different moods, different times of the day, or different purposes. Different sizes, textures, colors, and fragrances affect the desired location of plantings. Attracting butterflies or bees to your favorite reading spot may not be desirable! “The garden should awaken every sense, sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell. I think it was originally my passion for photography that inspired me to create my own nature studio. Here I can get up close and comfortable with the wonders that the tropics offer. For me, there simply is no more perfect medium to express my creative side. I love learning! So many of the local Thais have shared their intimate knowledge of the local flora. Mat’s brother, Piet Ruijters is a retired pharmacist and owner of Natin Spicy Garden. April-May | 2016

A lesson for anyone and everyone

Step off the beaten track and into the jungle for some hands-on learning about sustainability in paradise. Short for Asian Sustainability Academy Koh Lanta, AsaLanta takes a holistic approach to education; promoting health, happiness and harmony for people and our planet. Started in 2009 by Anke and Aoi, a Dutch/Thai couple, the ever-growing community is open to anyone interested in learning how to build a sustainable future. Whether you have a few hours or something more permanent in mind, anyone can enjoy and be inspired by their simple, self-sufficient and healthy lifestyle.

62

www.krabi-magazine.com

Anke and Aoi began AsaLanta with a dream to live in harmony with nature and provide alternative education projects to promote sustainable living. With a philosophy of ‘a simple life is all we need’, AsaLanta makes as little environmental impact as possible by working with, instead of against, its natural surroundings. With help from volunteers from around the world and members of the local community, AsaLanta has grown to live this philosophy. From an empty piece of jungle with no buildings, electricity or running water, today stands a painstakingly crafted village of earthen houses, composting toilets, a bamboo teahouse and shop, a natural spa, a tree house and food forest. If you have been longing to change your life, to feel free, travel to an exotic place and make a real connection with people and nature, or if you are simply looking to do something different on your holiday, AsaLanta can offer you a truly rewarding learning experience. Have your eyes opened, mind blown and soul inspired, be part of the local community, learn how to build a sustainable future and enjoy

April-May | 2016

a simple, self-sufficient, healthy lifestyle for body, mind, and soul.

and take the opportunity to have a stroll around the earthen village, where natural building is always in progress.

AsaLanta provides a great learning exchange, where everybody is a teacher and a student, learning from each other. You get to live in their earthen village for a week or up to 3 months and volunteer your time to the community for 3 hours in the morning, 5 days a week, allowing you to experience the local culture and obtain natural building and farming skills all at the same time. You have plenty of time to share with fellow community members and also go out to explore all that Koh Lanta has to offer.

The Asian Sustainability Academy offers a range of workshops by the hour for tourists and travelers alike, and is also developing a curriculum for the local children. Saturday and Sunday mornings are “school time”, when AsaLanta turns into an educational playground for local kids to practice English language and arts. Learning by doing, the youngsters really get into the activities. They work, play and practice alongside all the international members of the community.

Don’t worry if you haven’t got the time to stay at AsaLanta. All visitors are welcomed and catered to in the cool and shady Teahouse. Built with local material, bamboo and clay, it looks absolutely beautiful and forms the heart of the village, where you can meet people from all walks of life and corners of the world. Visitors can pop by for a refreshing tea and delicious vegetarian lunch, visit the craft shop, have an angel card reading or crystal healing,

AsaLanta is run solely by volunteers, so booking any workshop activities in advance is essential. For more information on all that AsaLanta has to offer, or to find out how you can get involved, www.asalanta.com.

THE SUNSET ISLAND Koh Lanta consists of two islands, Koh Lanta Noi and Koh Lanta Yai. Koh Lanta Noi is the smaller of the two and does not have tourist facilities. Visitors travelling by road from the mainland pass through the smaller island on the way to Koh Lanta Yai - the center of it all.

B

an Sala Dan village on the north side of the island is Lanta Yai’s commercial center and the pier where visitors arrive on the island. It is a row of shops, seafood restaurants on stilts, dive shops, tour operators, banks and guest houses that cater for newcomers on the island. The bulk of the Lanta beaches lie along the west coast - hence it’s often referred to name as ‘The Sunset Island’-and can all be reached by road: Khao Kwang, Khlong Dao and Phra Ae all have long stretches of white sand facing the Andaman sea, while Khlong Khong, Khlong Nin and Ba Kan Tiang and other smaller bays take in more dramatic views and less crowded for swimming. Ba Kantiang Bay has spectacular crystal– clear seawater, soft white sand, romantic sunsets in utmost privacy. It’s the picture of a postcard, symbolizing a luxe hideaway in

64

Lanta for relaxing in natural surroundings. Known as Ban San Kau, this sea gypsy’s settlement is based on south-east Lanta Yai. It is there that an old clan of traditional Chao Ley try to preserve a disappearing way of life in this fast-developing island. Once called Ban Si Raya, Old Town was historically a commercial port for Chinese and Arabic trading boats that sailed between the ports of Phuket, Penang and Singapore. Today it is a village with a few rows of stilted shop houses and home to an ancient community that was established on the island long ago. It’s a picturesque place dating back 100 years, from the old days of sea trading. Near the shacks along the coast, local fishermen still dock their longtail boats and make for an authentic snapshot of local life. www.krabi-magazine.com

UNPLUG IN KOH JUM

Geography brought electricity to Koh Jum late in 2009 as the island was in the direct path of the new underwater electric cable connecting Koh Phi Phi to the mainland. So now that Koh Jum is plugged-in, has it lost its reputable character that has attracted intrepid travelers over the past couple of decades? We are pleased to report that Koh Jum is still as tranquil and laid back as it always has been. In fact, what is most noticeable are the lack of noisy generators at most of the islands resorts. Folks come to Koh Jum to tune out; the island’s nature and culture dominate the minimal tourist infrastructure. The existing resorts on Koh Jum all have their own family-run character, ranging from the backpackers paradise to luxurious beach villas. Koh Pu Mountain is the dominant geological feature on the island at over 400 meters. It’s a great hike for the adventurous and a vital refuge of native habitat still harboring Asian Pied Hornbills and Burmese pythons. The three villages; Koh Pu, Ting Rai and Koh Jum are situated on the back side of the island, amongst the mangroves while the resorts are located opposite, facing the open Andaman Sea. This division allows the villagers to remain authentic without a significant tourist infrastructure while the resorts are all located on the beaches. Koh Jum is predominately a large Muslim populated sub-district of Krabi, home to over 1,500 inhabitants. The locals of these villages

engage mostly in fishing, rubber cultivation and the local crafts of cloth weaving and painting or ‘batik’ as it is known as here. While the north is mountainous, the south is comprised of dense jungle, cashew nut trees, rubber plantations, casuarinas and nipapalms. Since all the resorts face West, there are epic sunsets to be had all along the island. The renowned Koh Jum Lodge is an excellent place to stay for a few days, and has superb views to boot. Access to the island is by longtail taxi boats which leave from the mainland at the port town of Laem Kruat. There is now a songthaew you can take direct from Krabi Town to Laem Kruat. During the high season most visitors come to Koh Jum using the Krabi-Koh Lanta ferry which stops at two locations on Koh Jum, both of which are offshore so local longtail boats will come from the island to pick up passengers.

The lack of any deep ports on the island keep the ferry boats out at sea and almost prevent large masses of tourists from overcrowding the island. Getting here is an adventure and this ends up defining the interesting community of resorts and visitors that have made this island their home and the place they return to year after year. Getting to Koh Jum can be very simple or a bit of a nightmare, it all depends on how much you know about it. This is where Krabi magazine can help, we recently took the trip to Koh Jum ourselves and have decided to share the adventure with all of our readers. There are 2 ways to get to Koh Jum by passing ferry or longtail boat. There are ferries that leave from Koh Lanta at www.krabi-magazine.com

8am and from Krabi at 11am, both ferries stop as they pass alongside Koh Jum and signal to longtail boats to come and pick up visitors to land ashore Koh Jum. Koh Phi Phi also has ferries which leave at 2pm and operate on the same principle as above. The second way to get to Koh Jum is to go to the port town of Laem Kruat, from where you can catch a longtail boat directly to Koh Jum- this was our favorite of the 2 methods of travel. If you are driving, it takes about 1 hour to get from Ao Nang to Laem Kruat. You just head to Tesco Lotus and then continue until you see the large overhead signs which tell you to turn right for “Koh Jam”. This road will lead to the small locality of Laem Kruat, where you will find a large pier with boats going to Koh Jum. If you don’t have transport of your own, you can always catch a blue and yellow “songthaew” - the local buses that have benches in the back. On the side of the “songthaew” will be written – Krabi, Bus Station, Tesco, Big C, Laem Kruat, they are frequent and easy to spot.

These buses will leave from all of these locations at intervals throughout the day and will take you directly to the Laem Kruat pier. Now, the pier is a bit misleading. We waited at the end of the pier before realizing the longtail taxis were passing us by and docking at the mainland. Then we went back and followed our noses along past the shops until we saw a slipway with goods and people being unloaded. It was the second slipway we needed to get to “Moo Too”, the place on Koh Jum we were being collected from. If you know the name of the pier on Koh Jum you need to get to, just ask anyone in this area and they will direct you to the correct boat. We got on and soon were chugging along through the mangroves with a boat full of happy local Muslim women that looked as they hadn’t changed a bit since 1925. We arrived at Koh Jum just 45 minutes later, paid our 70thb fare and were taken by “taxi” (a battered old pickup truck) through the winding dirt track until we reached our destination resort. Give it a go and you will see a different side of Thailand from years gone by.

Well worth the experience.

WHAT DOES the term “ RAI “ MEAN ? A rai is a unit of area, equal to 1 square sen or 1,600 square metres (40 m × 40 m), and is used in measuring land area for a cadastre or cadastral map. Its current size is precisely derived from the metre. The rai equals 4 Ngaan or 400 Tarangwa a.k.a. square wa. Usually used in Thailand, the Rai, the Wah, the Ngaan and the Tarangwa are recognized by the International System. Converting Rai and Wah can be complex and can create legal issues when people do not understand what it is that they are signing at the contract stage. Ensure that you understand what you are buying and how best to deal with this. These are the basics for land conversion in the land measurement system in Thailand. Thailand does not have an Imperial or Metric system.

If you’re looking for property, why spend your time traipsing around different agents to see what’s on

-1 sq. wah = 4 sq. m. 1 acre = 2.471 rai or 43,560 sq. ft. -1 ngan = 100 wah (or 400 sq. m.) 1 hectare = 6.25 rai or 10,000 sq. m. -1 Rai = 4 Ngan (or 1600 sq. m.)
