BRIDGING THE GAP

Friday 22nd April 2016 was a momentous day for the people of Koh Lanta. On this day, the bridge, linking the two islands of Koh Lanta Noi and Koh Lanta Yai was completed, shortening the total journey time to the beautiful islands by around one hour. Totaling 650m meters in length, the two-lane bridge has taken 5 years to complete and is already proving popular with visitors and locals alike.

Koh Lanta remains an island destination and it still requires a ferry or boat ride to reach from the mainland. AO NANG BEACH At 20 km from Krabi Town Ao Nang Beach is the most developed of Krabi’s many beaches. Ao Nang Beach is famous for it’s white sand beaches and large limestones karsts towering over the eastern edges. All of your accommodation, shopping and service needs can be found here. It is the hub from which to plan your trip to sea as well as to any number of the nearby islands.

NOPPHARAT THARA BEACH Just around the corner from Ao Nang, yet still undeveloped with only a few resorts, bars and restaurants, Noppharat Thara beach offers a bit more “local” feel than it’s sister Ao Nang. Attractive because of its natural setting, this is where local youngsters and families gather during sunset and on weekends. At low tide, walk out together with millions of small crabs on the sandy pathways to a small island on the western edge of the beach.

KLONG MUANG BEACH A further 20 km away from Ao Nang Klong Muang is the up-market side of Krabi, the place to be if you are after a peaceful and hassle free holiday.

Catering to families and couples, it is here that you really get that well deserved repose, surrounded by pristine nature.

KOH LANTA BEACHES Koh Lanta has a wide selection of resorts for all tastes and pockets. Koh Lanta Yai island has long stretches of gleaming white sandy beaches and shallow emerald waters. Lined with tropical vegetation, a private spot is never more than a short walk away..

TUBKAEK BEACH Next to Klong Muang Beach, Tub Keak beach is another place to just get away; long, clean and powerful, the area boasts breathtaking views over the Koh Hong archipelago and provides for wonderfully charming sunsets. From Tubkeak beach you can venture inside the National Park and try the nature trail “Naga trek” to one of the most spectacular viewpoints in Krabi.

RAILAY AND TONSAI BEACHES Are split and separated from Ao Nang by a limestone mountain range.

Railay has two sides, east and west, and its settings are simply marvelous: crystal clear waters, pure sandy beaches, lush mountains and rocky islands emerging from the sea. Both beaches are known all over the world for their famous climbing routes.

They can only be reached by boat, a 15 minute ride from Ao Nang or 30 minutes from Krabi Town. Enjoy a cocktail in one of the beach bars, visit the Phranang Cave, challenge yourself on a rock climbing or ‘deep water solo’ cliff jumping into the sea, hike the limestone trail to a lagoon or the viewpoint or simply chill out and watch the day pass you by.

KOH PODA This is the iconic island of Krabi and the first and most dramatic one you can see from Ao Nang beach.

Hop on a longtail boat - the local wooden boats with their picturesque prow - and sail away surrounded by turquoise water..

CHICKEN ISLAND This should be next on your list as it is right next to Koh Poda. From the right angle when passing Chicken Island (Koh Gai) you can catch a glimpse of a chicken’s neck and head, some would argue more like that of a turkey but it’s up to you. The second island, Koh Tub, is connected to Chicken Island by a sandy isthmus and people can walk from one to another at low tide.

KOH JUM & KOH SIBOYA Both are unspoiled tropical hideaways that have a unique atmosphere.

Tune in to the slow culture here, imbibe the peace and recharge your batteries with the soundtrack of lapping waves.

KOH HONG This island archipelago demands everyone’s attention as it is one of the highlights of Krabi Province. The Archipelago, a group of limestone islands with many hidden caves and lagoons makes it perfect for snorkeling and exploring. Visit Lading and Pakbia islands before Koh Hong as they are much less visited and sport a blend of both lush jungle and tropical waters. Koh hong is usually crowded until 3pm so we recommend visiting other Lading and Pakbia in the morning, then going to Koh Hong after the crowds have started to leave.

KOH PHI PHI Private bays, limestone cliffs, waters rich in marine life and caves where swallow’s birds nests are harvested are all here on the island that Leonardo Di Caprio once rolled his hot bod in while filming ‘The Beach’ at the now iconic Maya Bay.

KOH LANTA The developing island at the southern end of the province known for its prime sunset views, heaps of activities and glimpses into sea gypsy life.

Koh Lanta is also a National Park that comprises many local islands surrounded by coral reefs, such as Koh Ngai, Koh Mook and the remote Koh Rok. LIMESTONE MOUNTAINS These iconic karsts characterize most of the inland area of Krabi, the most spectacular being the crags of Sai Tai, in between Ao Nang and Krabitown.

Susaan Hoi is a 40 million yearold seashell cemetery; once a large swamp where freshwater crustaceans proliferated, today it’s home to 40 centimeter thick, shell encrusted limestone slabs, a geologically rather unique and is only 5Km from Ao Nang beach.

KHAO PHANOM BENCHA NATIONAL PARK At 20 km from Krabi Town, the Khao Phanom Bencha national park comprises waterfalls, streams, lush forests and caves. It is home to all kind of flora and wildlife and to the highest mountain in the region from which it takes it’s name. One of the features of the park is Huay Thoi Waterfall where water runs down onto several huge pools.

TARNBOK KHORANEE NATIONAL PARK Located in the north of the province, Tarnbok Khoranee national park is made up of limestone mountains, verdant tropical forest, caves and beautiful islands. It is well known kayaking explorers as there are a number of tributaries curving into a number of small caves boasting ancient cave paintings.

SA MORAKOT OR THE EMERALD POOL Truly a natural wonder of Krabi: a pond of turquoise water with an average temperature of 30-40°C fed by a hot spring in the middle of the jungle in Klong Thom district, 70 kilometers from Ao Nang.

HOT SPRINGS Situated in Klong Thom district, These natural hot springs are natures jacuzzis. They melt away tensions, relieve the body and mind with the fresh spring water running over mineral enriched limestone rocks.

BRIDGE NOW OPEN IN KOH LANTA CONNECTING KOH LANTA NOI AND KOH LANTA YAI. The recent opening of the long awaited bridge connecting two of the largest islands in Krabi, furthering Koh Lanta’s growth and development in being an easier located to access for visitors from around the world.

Koh Lanta is separated from the mainland of Krabi province by two large canals and an intermediate island, Koh Lanta Noi. prior to the bridge opening drivers would have to take the trip by crossing both canals on the backs of two tough ferries making the journey take an upwards of 3 hours at times. Say goodbye to one of those ferry trips and say hello to open roads as you cruise over the second canal and safely onto Koh Lanta Yai. The total trip has ben reduced by around 1 hour saving you time and money.

TRAVELING BY CARS FROM THE WESTERN PART OF BANGKOK TO THE HEART OF THE CAPITAL WILL SOON BE FASTER AND MORE CONVENIENT AS THE SRI RAT-OUTER RING ROAD EXPRESSWAY PROJECT IS NOW COMPLETED AND READY TO OPEN NEXT MONTH. This was disclosed by the transport minister after he inspected the readiness of the project yesterday before next month’s official opening.

The project is a 6-lane elevated expressway, mostly constructed in the existing right of way of the Red Line Mass Transit Railway (Bangsue-Talingchan Section) route with the total length of 16.7 kilometers.

The project starts from Karnchanaphisek Road (Outer Ring Road) at a location near Mahasawat Water Treatment Plant and the route runs through the east direction along the existing right of way of the southern railway route and crossing the Chao Phraya River at Rama VI Bridge prior to ending at Kampaemgphet 2 road, north of Mochit 2 bus terminal.

Mr Arkom Termphittaya-Paisit, the transport minister, said the expressway would be fully completed by the end of this month, or sooner than schedule.

This expressway will help ease traffic congestion on the west of the Outer Ringroad or Karnchanaphisek road into the heart of the capital, he said.

He said before the official opening on August 20, the Expressway Authority of Thailand (EXAT) will open the expressway for a free trial run for vehicles from August 15-17.

The fee is 50 baht for a vehicle with four wheels, 75 baht for vehicles with 6-10 wheels and 110 baht for vehicles with over 10 wheels.

PRIME MINISTER GENERAL PRAYUT CHAN-OCHA VISITED NARATHIWAT PROVINCE LAST MONTH TO REVIEW NATIONAL SECURITY, ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS IN THE RESTIVE REGION.

SOFITEL KRABI PHOKEETHRA GOLF & SPA RESORT WELCOMES ANDRE OLIVEIRA, NEW DIRECTOR OF SPORTS, RECREATION & SPA At the Narathiwat Task Force base in the civil service complex in Muang district, Prayut, Army chief General Theerachai Nakwanich and several ministers reviewed Army operations including weapon seizures, the raid of an insurgent camp, and several arrests of suspected insurgents and sympathisers.

Prayut asked questions about operations and instructed officers to proceed with their work carefully to prevent any loss of life.

The prime minister then visited Princess of Naradhiwas University’s conference hall, where he presided over a ceremony to provide 1,000 land title deeds to 800 residents in the Budo-Sungai Padi mountain range for agricultural use of plots in Rusoh, Rangae, Bacho, Yingor, Sungai Padi and Jor I Rong districts.

The deeds were granted to allay fear that residents might be accused of encroaching on forestland.

Meanwhile, Immigration Police Division 6 commander Pol Maj-General Nitipong Niamnoi said he had coordinated with his Malaysian counterparts to screen people crossing the border following news reports earlier this month that the so-called Islamic State (IS) might seek to establish operations in Thailand’s southern neighbour.

People from countries that are considered “at risk” would face detailed questioning at the border and their movements in the Kingdom would be monitored, Nitipong said. For example, he said, officials would verify their accommodation at hotels if they say they are visiting as tourists.

Sticky pads,

Those little geckos that crawl around Thailand are more helpful than you think.

YOU

can see them everywhere, from the forests to your hotel room. These amazing little creatures are essential to Krabi, keeping the bug population in check.

Their pads (fingers) are covered with tiny microfilaments allowing them to grasp to seemingly anything. glass, stone, tiles, trees and everything else you can imaging is just a walk in the park for geckos. Their climbing abilities is actually being studied by the US military in order to develop equipment which would enable soldiers to climb and grasp surfaces effortlessly.

You might be frightened if you hear them in the night, their tiny ‘chirp’ can be heard throughout the night. Don’t be afraid they are simply calling out to other gecko’s looking for mating pairs.

You also might see them playing together chasing one another up walls chirping in excitement, fear or anger. Once they catch one another they wrestle (still on a vertical or upside down surface) and fight over food, women or both. If the fighting gets too intense and one fears for their life then there can often be a more graphic (but harmless) result. Geckos pose an interesting ability to autotomize their tails, which means they can allow their tail to separate from the rest of the bodies without unjust to the rest of their body. It is a common practice for many lizard species throughout the globe. It is a useful survival trait as it allows the gecko to scamper off while the attacker is left with it’s tail in is jaws confused and disoriented. So if you see this don’e worry the gecko will live to see another day instead of meeting it’s end in the jaws of another.

iving in Thailand has allowed me to gain some incredible perspective about overall health and well-being via Thai people and their culture. Known as the “Land of Smiles,” holiday goers flock to this nation from north, south, east, and west in their millions each year.

In many countries, after lunch or dinner, a lovely slice of pie a la Mode may be enjoyed or a rich chocolate piece of cake may

1. Pineapple

Bromelain is a complex mixture of substances found in the pineapple. Cysteine proteinases found in Bromelain aid as an anti-inflammatory and benefit digestion. Pineapple is a great source of Manganese, Thiamin offering energy production and immune defense. A fruit high in Vitamin C, fighting against free radicals that can damage normal cell development. This crowned fruit is a great treat to turn to for the prevention of the common cold and flu.

2. Kiwi

Krabi’s coastline spreads over 300 kilometers, making it a great place to find new beaches and get wet while exploring the underwater paradise that surrounds us.

If you prefer to go a little deeper and stay longer, you can try SCUBA diving. The entire bay area is quite shallow with most diving locations less than 30 meters in depth. The life underwater is rich and incredibly diverse, with hundreds of different fish, corals and mammals to discover. There are blacktop reef sharks, leopard sharks, numerous parrot fish, pipe fish, nudibranchs and of course the friendly clown fish (or more commonly known as nemo fish).

The underwater world is rich in life, but it is up to us to help preserve it for future generations, so please be considerate with your trash whether you are on a boat or on a beach and always look for a trash bin to dispose of your waste.

n addition to its stunning islands and bustling cities, one can come to Thailand and enjoy Thai traditions which have grown in popularity in foreign countries, including Thai boxing, Thai massage, Thai cooking, Thai dance, Thai music, and Thai golf.

Golf arrived in Thailand a hundred years ago during the reign of King Rama V. It was first played by nobles and other elitists of high society, but since then, things have changed. Over the past decade or so, the popularity of golf in Thailand has escalated, played by local Thais as well as tourists and expatriates.

Golf can be played in Thailand every day of the year.

During the rainy season, from June to October, all the courses have drainage systems so they are still playable. The hot season is a good time for playing golf and getting a suntan, and this runs through March and April. The cool season is probably the freshest time of the year for golfing in Thailand – it runs from November to February.

As in other Asian countries, the standard of golf played in Thailand by local golfers has skyrocketed over the past few years. Thongchai Jaidee is the country’s most successful golfer, winning a handful of major international tournaments. Other Thais have had international success such as Prayad Marksaeng and Boonchu Ruangjit.

THARA PARK

Krabi town’s hidd en beauty

rabi town - a small capital in the south of Thailand with a population of about twenty-five thousand people is home to the shortest river in all of Thailand. Although the river is the shortest, the mouth of the river – where Krabi town sits – provides for some of the most stunning spots for relaxing, taking photos, or just watching the constant trail of longtail boats pass by.

Few of the tourists walking on Chao Fa Pier, home to the famous night market, are aware of this glorious park. We’ll try to shed some light on this wonderful place.

Strolling along the promenade of the Chao Fah area can be a great way to spend a lazy afternoon in Krabi town. But venture a little further down the pier area and you will come across a massive outdoor park – Thara Park.

Well known by locals who frequent the grounds, Thara Park is great for exercising, strolling through the trees with families or taking dogs for a walk. It is located next to the Krabi Marina and behind some of the municipal buildings of Krabi town.

Not only a good place for relaxing and spending time strolling through the trees and gardens, Thara park is a favorite place for many who are watching their physique. With numerous pull up stations, a 1.15km asphalt running path, and other exercise stations, the park is a great place to get in shape. Located on the bank of the Krabi River, among numerous trees and palms, it’s a terrific location for your workout while enjoying stunning natural signs swaying in the breeze. The numerous trees provide an oasis to in which to rejuvenate during the hot weather (basically every day of the year!). The numerous trees which dot the park are not enough to keep you safe from the intense heat of Krabi, so during weekdays from 11am-3pm, you will rarely see anyone wandering the parks grounds.

However, after five o’clock in the evening, the park starts to fill with locals.

With two parking lots, there is plenty of space to park for both cars or motorcycles. The park has a large football field, basketball court, indoor stadium, and a tennis court, giving you many options to keep your heart rate high. Even for those cycling enthusiasts, there is a special area surrounding the football field where you can spin your tires to your heart’s content.

Worried about your kids? Thara park has a fully equipped playground with roundabouts and children’s slides where kids of all ages can play together or with their parents. The park is set up to welcome the many visitors which frequent the grounds daily as there are two tents where you can buy soft drinks, ice cream, and snacks. Both of these tents are located at the entrance to the park, so you cannot miss them. They primarily sell “street food” – BBQ chicken, pork, somtum, grilled catfish, and talapis, and much more.

On weekends, the locals love to picnic in the park, sitting under the shade of trees around the small pond.

The park separated into two halves. One half is arranged and built for sports and children to play in, while the other is designed as a space where creativity can occur freely. This creative section is not clearly marked, but you will see plaster figurines and paintings for sale or other goods on display. Also, a number of painters will be set up to paint on the spot of either landscape settings or of something you wish. Some of the stalls are set up to allow visitors to paint on their own so you can create some art with your kids or friends.

In this “creative section,” there is a figure of the Thai and English alphabet. Walk and familiarity with the alphabet will be a very exciting experience for moms and their kids.

Near the park, there are a couple of restaurants where you can taste freshly caught seafood dishes, a small café, and a 7/11. So if you prefer these options, then you’re covered for food and drink.

From the park you can always take a taxi-motorbike to the shopping centre “Vogue” for 20-30 baht. Taxi drivers are on duty near the entrance to the park near the river.

TREASURE OF ART The treasures of culture in the Province Krabi are not easy to discover, yet Krabi has much to offer. It has become one of the top priorities for Krabi municipality to bring the culture of Krabi closer to the locals as well as to visitors.

One example of this cultural revival is the Andaman Art Museum and Cultural Center in Krabi town in Maharaj Alley (Pak nam district). Originally opened November 2013, the museum and cultural center has been undergoing exhibit overhauls and renovations since then. It is only now that the museum and cultural center can enjoy a true grand opening.

The main purpose of the museum is to provide Thai and international artists a platform where they can work together and exchange experiences and to showcase their works to the public. The museum currently displays about 600 pieces crafted by artists from all around the world. These pieces cover a wide range of works and styles, from paintings, photographs, woodcarving, to multimedia works, all of which reflect the history of the past, the present, and the future – all with a general focus on Asia.

The museum is divided into different areas: 1. The “Klong Thom Beads” Museum True works of art, Klong Thom Beads are an integral part of Krabi society and can be seen adorning the necks of many locals throughout the province. What makes these beads significant? When did they begin to be manufactured? These questions are answered in the exhibit. Although these beads were originally created over two centuries ago, their significance is still relevant in everyday society. Therefore, the exhibit is set in a more modern ambience.

2. The permanent exhibition Mostly made up of paintings, the main building of the museum complex presents works of art spread out over three floors throughout five separate rooms. The first exhibition room is called “Ranong” and displays the works of a number of local artists from the south coast of Thailand.

The second room known as “Phang Nga” showcases works by the young awarded artists of Thailand.

The third showroom, “Trang,” is home to the paintings of famous national artists from Thailand. Such artists as Prayad Pongdam, Thawan Duchanee, and Kamol Tassananchalee (he attend the workshop and Watercolor exhibition last month), to name a few.

In the fourth room, “Phuket,” you can see art by a huge number of international artists.

The fifth room called “Krabi” includes works of national artists and also an exhibition of talented young people from the five provinces of Southern Thailand.

3. Temporary exhibitions Each month a new exhibition featuring work from different artists and themes is displayed. Even if you have already seen the Art Museum in Krabi, there is always an interesting temporary exhibition. It is worth it to discover the theme and who the artists are. The temporary exhibits are not just rainy day activities; the art featured is worthy of notice and will leave a lasting impact on you.

“Asian Watercolor: Art Workshop & Exhibition 2016” was the most recent temporary exhibition in June / July 2016. It combined a watercolor painting workshop with more than 60 renowned national and contemporary artists as well as renowned international artists from nine Asian countries such as Myanmar, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, China, Japan, India and Thailand. This workshop was held for the first time this year and the many famous artists were all honorably invited by Krabi Municipality.

The watercolor paintings are truly works of art. They each reflect a wonderful cross-section of the most diverse landscapes of Asia combined with scenes of daily life including bright colors that capture the various moods and attitudes towards life.

The opening of the exhibition was hosted by the Governor of the province of Krabi, Dr. Phinich Boonlert, the Mayor of Krabi Municipality, Mr. Keeratisak Phukaoluan, and the Chairman of Krabi Provincial Education Council, Mr. Chuan Phukaoluan. The ceremony was attended by all artists participating in the workshop and was held in the exhibition rooms of the Andaman Art Museum.

At the exhibition, I met Mr. Bancha Ma from Ao Nang, an unexpected treasure right on our doorstep. Mr. Bancha and his wife run a small guest house business, Relax @ Krabi, which also features a home gallery. It is located in Aonang/Nopparathara. How wonderful it must be for one to spend their holidays in the midst of so much art.

Mr. Bancha Ma is an architect and has worked on numerous hotels and resorts throughout Krabi over recent decades. In his younger years, he played guitar and harmonica in a rock and roll band . Much of the diversity of his life can be clearly seen in his paintings as well as the design of his guest house. The primary focus of his art is watercolor paintings, and he is a member of the International Watercolor Society (IWS).

He participated in the workshop in Krabi and his paintings can be seen at the exhibition “Asian Watercolor Art Workshop & Exhibition 2016.” Some of his paintings are currently part of exhibitions in Bangkok (Rivercity). In September, he is scheduled to attend an exhibition in Budapest, Hungary.

Recently, Mr. Bancha ma was invited to the exhibition “LOVE UNITED,” the first International Watercolor Biennale hosted in Hong Kong”. At LOVE UNITED, works from over 60 countries will be displayed from October 13-16.

W

ho are we to leave our creations of mass litter throughout our planet? This is the simple question we must ask ourselves daily. What impact does each action have on our beautifully diverse and truly stunning planet we all call home? We are inhabitants and the actions we take have an effect (often immediate) on those around us.

Many countries have already taken action against the widespread use of plastic bags by implementing policies charging those at grocery and convenience shops for the use of extra bags, thus encouraging people to not throw away used bags, and rather keep them in the case of use at a future date. These policies don’t exist at the moment in Thailand, yet we hope they are coming soon. As citizens of this world, we must take matters into our own hands. When you are at 6/11, please ask the staff to keep their bags, use your pockets or backpack, and encourage your friends to do the same.

We shouldn’t stop at changing our use of bags.

Drinking water bottles account for more than 10% of the global plastic usage which is over 10,000 metric tons of plastic bottles being thrown away each day.

We must work to combat these numbers and help keep our environment greener for longer. Buy a thick plastic bottle and rescue it with drinkable tap or filtered water, and stop buying disposable plastic bottles.

Think of future generations as past generations thought of you, and try to make our planet a little better for them.

o you’ve got a bulge? You’re bigger, more tired, eat more, and feel very much unlike your normal self.

Before you had this little one growing, you felt energetic, your days were spent running, exercising, playing on the beach, but now it’s all changed. Does it have to?

Now that your stomach is getting bigger each day, certain things will become less and less easy for you to achieve physically, and this is just a part of the process. Things which become more difficult are not impossible, though. One of those things is yoga. Your body is larger, your weight has increased, your bones feel brittle, so it’s tougher to get back on the mat and do your standard poses – certainly not to the same rhythm, but with time and practice, you will be surprised with what you can do in only a short amount of time.

According to leading scientists, yoga and simple exercise routines, when done properly, can have a beneficial effect for both you and your baby. In fact, yoga during pregnancy has been found to help babies during their development stage as well as later during the actual birthing.

Yoga stretches muscles, increases flexibility and strength. So not only can you do it, but you should!

Let’s go over some of the basics. Pregnancy is split into trimesters, and each trimester brings with it certain physiological changes. And each trimester has certain poses and positions which are ideal for your body at that point in time.

A look into yoga for you during pregnancy.

Let’s start with the first trimester. Your body is beginning to change, your stomach is growing although you don’t see too much increase in your actual size. During this time, it is good to focus primarily on standing poses as they will strengthen your bones, enhance circulation, and generate energy (from the increased blood flow).

Some have reported that standing poses have helped to reduce leg cramps.

During the second trimester, your body will begin to show more signs of growth and so more focus should be put on sitting poses and poses which don’t put too much strain on your legs.

During the second trimester, you should begin to focus more on your breathing.

You should be focusing almost solely on breathing techniques, poses of almost any kind can be strenuous on your body, so be careful. If it feels alright, then proceed.

Generally speaking, standing and sitting poses are typically too difficult for most woman at this stage of their pregnancy.

Krabitown, A more local side of town.

Krabi town, located only a short jaunt from Ao Nang, is the heart of Krabi province and offers tourists a glimpse into another side of life of locals.

Krabi is a melting pot of cultures, races, and nationalities. 95% of the people who live in Krabi town are Thai people, but they come from a diverse background. In fact, a growing number of descendants are the offspring of Chinese migrant workers who came to Krabi more than a century ago in search of a better life for themselves and their families. These migrant workers they brought with them a wide range of goods, practices, and traditions which have now become everyday essential parts of the society of the town. You can see a number of Chinese temples which dot the town.

Surprisingly, a large number of Thailand’s population is ethnic Chinese. A huge number of Chinese emigrated from China from the 18th century into the 1950’s. The people who fled were typically peasants and field workers and laborers.

They were fleeing China due to famine, starvation, wars, and political corruption. These souls were looking for a better life with better opportunities, and they found these things in Southeast Asia, the Americas, South Africa, and Australia. The Chinese that fled to these places established themselves insmall communities and formed many of the famous China towns throughout the world.

Although Krabi has no official “Chinatown,” it does have a certain Chinese influence. In addition, Krabi town has so much to offer and explore. We’re going to try to cover some of the must-visit spots, but it’s a difficult task to cover them all. So get on a motorbike (or car) and get to Krabi town yourself and see what this place has to offer.

Restaurants: Viva restaurant: Twenty years ago, Renato was a backpacking man and decided to set his roots down in Krabi. He did what any Italian man who loved good food, wine, and company would do – open an Italian restaurant.

Since its inception, Viva has become one of the town’s go-to spots for real Italian food, from the freshly baked homemade bread and pizza dough to the tiramisu and all the pizza and sauce in between, it’s a feast each time you visit Viva.

The temple is open 24/7, but the best time to come for a visit is around 5:30pm.

Typically, most banks will issue a charge on your account of up to $5USD for withdrawing from a foreign ATM, this is what you will be charged on top of the standard Thai fee of 180THB ($6USD) so in total to withdraw money at a local ATM from your account based in Europe (or other foreign countries) you could be charged up to $11USD which is about 350THB.

Rock Climbing in Railay, a deeper look.

Rock climbing has been around since there were rocks and people to climb them. It’s going to be around until there are no more rocks and no more people to climb them (I think the people will probably go first). But until that happens, let’s talk about what goes into the sport today.

There are many types of rock climbing – free climbing, single pitch, multi pitch, deep water solo, ice climbing, (that last one just makes me terrified thinking about it). Each type has specific

requirements, but there is one thing they all share – the need for adherence to safety. No matter how many walls you’ve scaled or how many hours you’ve spent on the edge, you always have to remember that if you fall, there is no getting up.

Climbers follow a strict code of ethics when it comes to safety. This strict code is one of the main reasons that there are so few fatalities in the sport of rock climbing.

I

n Railay and Tonsai it is no different. There are a handful of schools that offer climbing lessons and guides which will take customers up a range of routes form beginner 5A routes up to the more extreme routes with difficulties ranging up to 7C. These schools take safety seriously, and so before they take a customer up on the walls, they will take some safety precautions into consideration.

“Have you ever climbed before, indoor or outdoor? If yes, how many times or years have you spent climbing? Do you have any physical limitations or injuries we should know about?” These are all some of the basic questions you can expect to hear from the shop owners reviewing your current skill level. Once on the wall, gear is always tightened down, harnesses are fitted snug yet comfortable, and are typically replaced 6-12 months. The ropes are also tested and tried frequently and if needed replaced. Climbing schools will replace ropes every year just to err on the side of caution. Once on the face of the mountain your guide will take a visual assessment of your skill level and provide expert recommendations, and while keeping you in a place of safely, challenging your abilities.

But that’s not all the guides do to keep you safe on the mountain.

The Railay Rock Climbing Guides are First Responders for the Railay National Parks Team when tourists get lost trekking to Tonsai, or more frequently when hiking up to the viewpoint and/or lagoons.

These rescue missions typically happen late at night once hotels notify authorities that guests may be in need of help. Often, tourists lose track of the time and end up needing rescuing at night, when the paths are slippery and vision is limited.

The only way to safely rescue tourists from high vantage points is with ropes, mountaineering, and cliff rescue knowledge, which is where the climbers come in.

The climbers, climbing school owners, and regularly visiting climbers from all over the world work hard to maintain the routes and crags (walls) in Railay and Tonsai. Thaitanium Project is a non-profit effort dedicated to providing and installing titanium climbing bolts throughout Thailand. These Thaitanium climbing bolts are the safest and strongest bolts tested to weather the climate. All the proceeds donated to the project support the purchase of these bolts. Since 2014 there have been nearly 2,000 routes rebolted.

Curently, we are preparing to launch our Certified Courses Program under the direction of the Southeast Asian Climbing Federation with the aim to foster climbing and mountaineering activities in the region through competitions, meetings, gatherings, and other innovative activities. (Exclusive at Real Rocks Climbing.) The climbing schools take the sport and the safety concerns seriously. When you choose to get onto the face of a mountain, you do so in good hands. Most of the guides have more than a decade of experience, and pride themselves on their no-accident records.

Deep Water Soloing (climbing without ropes and free falling into the sea) has become the prime attraction for adventure seekers in the South of Thailand since 2005. These DWS trips have remained accident-free since their start as they were run exclusively by the rock climbing schools in Tonsai and Railay Beach. Over time, since the sites were located throughout the National Parks, they soon became

a popular stopping point for snorkeling and boat tours. Boats would often crowd the cliffs making it unsafe for people to safely fall into the water; and the snorkeling guides (who were not professional climbers) didn’t know how to properly give safety briefs to their clients. Earlier this year, the National Parks decided to ban all rock climbing and tour operators from climbing at Poda Island or selling DWS tours since they deemed the activity unsafe, when in fact there has never been a case of tourist injury due to the sport. This has been huge blow to the local climbing industry, on top of the rock climbing school closures at Koh Yao Noi and Phi Phi in late 2015.

It’s an age-old problem – a few bad apples have spoiled the whole bunch. So how do we fix this? One simple way is to support the climbing schools here in Railay as they are leading the way petitioning the national park to reopen the sport, but regulate who is allowed to take people on these trips.

Massaman all the way.

Massaman curry is a Thai favorite due to its mild flavour and ease of cooking.

Originally curries were native to India but thanks to maritime trade routes the dish has spread throughout South East Asia, every region adopting their own particularities, changing the dish ever so slightly and making it their own.

Massaman curry uses it’s own unique kind of curry paste, containing cinnamon, coriander and cloves. Mix this with peanuts adding texture to the dish and you’re almost done.

Coconut milk, potatoes, chicken (or any other type of meat) and onions make up the bulk of the dish giving it’s signature Thai flare.

It’s a fantastic dish and really super easy to cook. So next time you are in the kitchen looking to try something new, try out Massaman Curry.

2-3 Servings Ingredients: 400g chicken (or another type of meat) 500ml coconut milk 2 tablespoons massman curry paste 1 carrot 2 potatoes (medium) 1 medium onion 1/3 cup toasted peanuts 1 tablespoon fish sauce 1 teaspoon palm sugar 1 teaspoon salt 1.5 teaspoons chicken stock (or other stock of your choice) 1/2 cup water Preparation: Cube the vegetables (potatoes, carrots & onions) Cut the meat into small chunks (bite sized) toast peanuts (if not already done already) on a skillet over low heat Instructions: • In a skillet heat the coconut milk, once boiling reduce to a simmer and stir in the curry paste, stir until the paste is mixed thoroughly.

• Add meat, fish sauce, meat stock, salt and palm sugar continuing to stir all the while.

• Add water and bring the mixture to a boil • Add vegetables and reduce heat to a simmer • Simmer for 15 minutes • Test the vegetables for tenderness (you should be able to insert a knife into a potato cube and remove it easily without the potato sticking to the knife) • Once vegetables are tender and ready turn off heat and add peanuts • Serve and enjoy August-September | 2016

PROTECTING YOUR EYES

Good Vision is something that we can easily take for granted until a problem develops. Many times it can be too late to rectify that problem once the trouble starts. So, what can we do to insure that the our vision will be able to function at its highest efficiency throughout our lifetime?

Being visually oriented beings from birth and taking in the world through our eyes makes us extremely dependent upon this ability to function at a high level throughout our lifetime. Let’s look at some of the dangers to our eyes which lurk in our environment , as while as, some of the steps we can take to prolong health of our eyes.

Eyes function by taking in the light around us to create the images, objects and colors of things that surround us but this light itself can have a degrading effect upon our eyes over a lifetime of use. While most of us are aware of the dangers of sunlight that can cause sunburn and skin cancers from the ultraviolet (UV) radiation in sunlight, we do not often realize that UV light can be causing the same damage to our eyes. Extended exposure to sunlight has been linked to eye damage such as cataracts, macular degeneration, pingueculae, pteygia and photokeratitis that can cause temporary vision loss.

And some of the newest research shows that high-energy visible (HEV) radiation(also called blue light) may increase your long-term risk of macular degeneration.

Let’s take a moment here to explain a bit about Macular Degeneration. It has been reported on more commonly in the health news field in recent years and may be a term you have heard before. It can occur over a lifetime and is usually beginning to be noticeable in people in their 50s to 60s. The macula is a small spot near the center of the retina and the part of the eye needed for sharp, central vision, which lets us see objects that are straight ahead. Damage to this area will not cause vision loss but will degrade our ability to distinguish faces, see objects directly in front of us, drive, read, write or to do close work like cooking or fixing things. It can occur in one or both eyes and the damage is not reversible.

It easily passes through the cornea of the eye and can reach the lens and retina inside the eye. Research has linked UVA exposure to certain types of cataracts and it may play a role in the development of macular degeneration.

High energy visible light (HEV) , often called “Blue Light” is part of the visible spectrum of light. It has lower energy than the UV spectrum but can penetrate deeply into the eye. There it plays a role in the development of macular degeneration and can cause retinal damage.

UV light is a band of light that is above visible light, therefore invisible to us but having more energy than visible light. It is divided up into three (3) categories: UVA, UVB and UVC. Each type is distinguished by different wave-lengths.

Sand, water and snow will reflect most of the light radiation back towards your eyes that would otherwise be absorbed by your surroundings.

While a cloudy day may help with HEV exposure, UV radiation penetrates clouds and is the same as on a clear day.

The damage to the eyes from light radiation is cumulative and can add up over the years. One of the best precautions is to purchase and wear a good quality pair of sunglasses that are rated to block 100% of UVA and UVB radiation.

Wraparound glasses offer the greatest protection by blocking light reflected from the top, sides and bottom, around the sunglass lenses.

Color also matters. Bronze, tan, amber, copper and blue blocking lenses will screen the greatest amount of HEV light away from the eyes. They are particularly useful in snow situations in blocking the great amount of light (up to 80%) reflected from snow in winter.

Always wear sunglasses when out in the sun, even in a shady area and while driving. Much of the damaging UV light is reflected towards the eyes off roadways, buildings and other surrounding surfaces. Sunglasses are also necessary even if your contact lens provide protection from UV rays. They can only protect the part of the eye directly beneath them and leave the rest of the eyes exposed to damage.

UVC light has the shortest wave-length and contains the most energy. It has the greatest potential for damage to our eyes and skin. Fortunately, UVC light is blocked almost entirely in the atmosphere by the ozone layer.

Unless you live or work near the North and South Poles where the ozone layer is depleted during the summer months, you are safe from the effects of this light.

UVB light has a slightly longer wave-length and is partially filtered out by the ozone layer.

But some of it does reaches the ground and in low doses it is able to stimulate the production of the skin pigment Melanin, which causes the skin to darken and gives you that healthy suntanned look. In higher doses it is responsible for sunburn, increased risk of skin cancers, skin discoloration, wrinkles and premature skin aging. Not a lot of UVB energy can get through the cornea of the eye and it is not a problem for most people. Overexposure, however, can aid the development of pingueculae and pterygia which are unsightly growths on the surface of the eyes that are known to cause corneal damage and distort vision. When short-term, high exposure levels of UVB happen, the result can be a painful condition called photokeratitis, more commonly called “Snowblindness” where vision can be totally lost for 24-48 hours.

Some people have heard that people with dark eyes are more protected from light damage to the eyes. This is not true and people with dark eyes are just as susceptible to light damage as those with light eyes and fair skin.

So what can we do to protect our vision, especially at times like vacations when outdoor activities can expose eyes to increased amounts of sunlight? A good start is to realize the factors that increase eye damaging exposure.

TIME OF DAY- The sun is strongest from 10AM to 2PM when it is highest in the sky.

LOCATION- The closer a geographic location is to the equator the more sunlight energy it will receive.

MEDICATIONS- Use of Tetracycline, birthcontrol, sulfa drugs, tranquilizers and diuretics can increase your sensitivity to both UV and HEV radiation.

ALTITUDE- The higher the altitude the greater amount of UV radiation reaching the earth.

SETTING- UV and HEV levels are highest in open settings where little shade is available.

Finally, diet can play a large role in protecting the eyes from damage. Many recent studies have shown that higher levels of vitamin C in the blood plasma and the presence of anti-oxidants have a protective ability to ward off macular degeneration and other forms of damage to the eyes. These nutritional components can be easily obtained by eating a healthy diet including fresh fruits and vegetables and through the intake of dietary supplements.

As your mother may have told you,” You only have two eyes, so take good care of them”. With a little planning and the proper precautions your eyes can easily function at their highest efficiency throughout your lifetime.

THE SUNSET ISLAND Koh Lanta consists of two islands, Koh Lanta Noi and Koh Lanta Yai. Koh Lanta Noi is the smaller of the two and does not have tourist facilities. Visitors travelling by road from the mainland pass through the smaller island on the way to Koh Lanta Yai - the center of it all.

Known as Ban San Kau, this sea gypsy’s settlement is based on south-east Lanta Yai. It is there that an old clan of traditional Chao Ley try to preserve a disappearing way of life in this fast-developing island. Once called Ban Si Raya, Old Town was historically a commercial port for Chinese and Arabic trading boats that sailed between the ports of Phuket, Penang, and Singapore. Today it is a village with a few rows of stilted shop houses and home to an ancient community that was established on the island long ago.

unplug in KOH JUM Geography brought electricity to Koh Jum late in 2009 as the island was in the direct path of the new underwater electric cable connecting Koh Phi Phi to the mainland. Now that Koh Jum is plugged-in, has it lost its reputable character that has attracted intrepid travelers over the past couple of decades?

We are pleased to report that Koh Jum is still as tranquil and laid back as it always has been. In fact, what is most noticeable are the lack of noisy generators found at most of the islands resorts. Folks come to Koh Jum to tune out; the island’s nature and culture dominate the minimal tourist infrastructure.

The existing resorts on Koh Jum have their own family run character, ranging from the backpackers’ paradise to luxurious beach villas. Koh Pu Mountain is the dominant geological feature on the island at over 400 meters. It’s a great hike for the adventurous and a vital refuge of native habitat still harboring Asian Pied Hornbills and Burmese pythons.

The three villages, Koh Pu, Ting Rai, and Koh Jum are situated on the back side of the island, amongst the mangroves while the resorts are located opposite, facing the open Andaman Sea. This division allows the villagers to remain authentic without a significant tourist infrastructure while the resorts are all located on the beaches.

Koh Jum is predominately a large Muslim populated sub-district of Krabi, home to over 1,500 inhabitants. The locals of these villages engage mostly in fishing, rubber cultivation and the local crafts of cloth

weaving and painting or “batik” as it is known here.

While the north is mountainous, the south is comprised of dense jungle, cashew nut trees, rubber plantations, casuarinas, and nipa-palms. Since all the resorts face west, there are epic sunsets to be had all along the

island. The renowned Koh Jum Lodge is an excellent place to stay for a few days, and has superb views to boot. Access to the island is by longtail taxi boats which leave from the mainland at the port town of Laem Kruat.

Jum using the Krabi-Koh Lanta ferry which stops at two locations on Koh Jum, both of which are offshore so local longtail boats will come from the island to pick up passengers.

The lack of any deep ports on the island keep the ferry boats out at sea and almost prevent large masses of tourists from overcrowding the island. Getting here is quite an adventure and this ends up defining the interesting community of resorts and visitors that have made this island their home and the place they return to year after year.

Getting to Koh Jum can be very simple or a bit of a nightmare – it all depends on how much you know about it. This is where Krabi magazine can help.

We recently took the trip to Koh Jum ourselves and have decided to share the adventure with our readers.

There are two ways to get to Koh Jum by passing ferry or longtail boat. The ferries leave from Koh Lanta at 8am and from Krabi at 11am, and both stop as they pass alongside Koh Jum and signal to longtail boats to come and pick up visitors to land ashore at Koh Jum. Koh Phi Phi also has ferries which leave at 2pm and operate on the same principle as above.

There is now a songthaew you can take direct from Krabi Town to Laem Kruat. During the high season most visitors come to Koh www.krabi-magazine.com

The second way to get to Koh Jum is to go to the port town of Laem Kruat, from where you can catch a longtail boat directly to Koh Jum. This was our favorite of the two methods of travel. If you are driving, it takes about one hour to get from Ao Nang to Laem Kruat. You just head to Tesco Lotus and then continue until you see the large overhead signs which tell you to turn right for “Koh Jam”. This road will lead to the small locality of Laem Kruat, where you will find a large pier with boats going to Koh Jum. If you don’t have transport of your own, you can always catch a blue and yellow “songthaew” – the local buses that have benches in the back. On the side of the “songthaew” will be written – Krabi, Bus Station, Tesco, Big C, Laem Kruat. They are frequent and easy to spot. These buses will leave from all of these locations at intervals throughout the day and will take you directly to the Laem Kruat pier.

The pier is a bit misleading. We waited at the end of the pier before realizing the longtail taxis were passing us by and docking at the mainland. We went back and followed our noses along past the shops until we saw a slipway with goods and people being unloaded. It was the second slipway we needed to get to “Moo Too,” the place on Koh Jum we were being collected from. If you know the name of the pier on Koh Jum you need to get to, just ask anyone in this area and they will direct you to the correct boat. We got on and soon were chugging along through the mangroves with a boat full of happy local Muslim women that looked as if they hadn’t changed a bit since 1925. We arrived at Koh Jum just 45 minutes later, paid our 70 baht fare, and were taken by “taxi” (a battered old pickup truck) through the winding dirt track until we reached our destination resort. Give it a go and you will see a different side of Thailand from years gone by.

Well worth the experience.

WHAT DOES the term “ RAI “ MEAN ?

A rai is a unit of area, equal to 1 square sen or 1,600 square metres (40 m × 40 m), and is used in measuring land area for a cadastre or cadastral map. Its current size is precisely derived from the metre.

The rai equals 4 Ngaan or 400 Tarangwa a.k.a. square wa.

Usually used in Thailand, the Rai, the Wah, the Ngaan and the Tarangwa are recognized by the International System.

Converting Rai and Wah can be complex and can create legal issues when people do not understand what it is that they are signing at the contract stage. Ensure that you understand what you are buying and how best to deal with this.

These are the basics for land conversion in the land measurement system in Thailand. Thailand does not have an Imperial or Metric system.

-1 sq. wah = 4 sq. m. 1 acre = 2.471 rai or 43,560 sq. ft.

-1 ngan = 100 wah (or 400 sq. m.) 1 hectare = 6.25 rai or 10,000 sq. m.

-1 Rai = 4 Ngan (or 1600 sq. m.)
