WINDOW

AO NANG BEACH At 20 km from Krabi Town Ao Nang Beach is the most developed of Krabi’s many beaches. Ao Nang Beach is famous for it’s white sand beaches and large limestones karsts towering over the eastern edges. All of your accommodation, shopping and service needs can be found here. It is the hub from which to plan your trip to sea as well as to any number of the nearby islands. NOPPHARAT THARA BEACH Just around the corner from Ao Nang, yet still undeveloped with only a few resorts, bars and restaurants, Noppharat Thara beach offers a bit more “local” feel than it’s sister Ao Nang. Attractive because of its natural setting, this is where local youngsters and families gather during sunset and on weekends. At low tide, walk out together with millions of small crabs on the sandy pathways to a small island on the western edge of the beach. KLONG MUANG BEACH A further 20 km away from Ao Nang Klong Muang is the up-market side of Krabi, the place to be if you are after a peaceful and hassle free holiday. Catering to families and couples, it is here that you really get that well deserved repose, surrounded by pristine nature. KOH LANTA BEACHES Koh Lanta has a wide selection of resorts for all tastes and pockets. Koh Lanta Yai island has long stretches of gleaming white sandy beaches and shallow emerald waters. Lined with tropical vegetation, a private spot is never more than a short walk away..

12

TUBKAEK BEACH Next to Klong Muang Beach, Tub Keak beach is another place to just get away; long, clean and powerful, the area boasts breathtaking views over the Koh Hong archipelago and provides for wonderfully charming sunsets. From Tubkeak beach you can venture inside the National Park and try the nature trail “Naga trek” to one of the most spectacular viewpoints in Krabi. RAILAY AND TONSAI BEACHES Are split and separated from Ao Nang by a limestone mountain range. Railay has two sides, east and west, and its settings are simply marvelous: crystal clear waters, pure sandy beaches, lush mountains and rocky islands emerging from the sea. Both beaches are known all over the world for their famous climbing routes. They can only be reached by boat, a 15 minute ride from Ao Nang or 30 minutes from Krabi Town. Enjoy a cocktail in one of the beach bars, visit the Phranang Cave, challenge yourself on a rock climbing or ‘deep water solo’ cliff jumping into the sea, hike the limestone trail to a lagoon or the viewpoint or simply chill out and watch the day pass you by.

KOH PODA This is the iconic island of Krabi and the first and most dramatic one you can see from Ao Nang beach. Hop on a longtail boat - the local wooden boats with their picturesque prow - and sail away surrounded by turquoise water.. CHICKEN ISLAND This should be next on your list as it is right next to Koh Poda. From the right angle when passing Chicken Island (Koh Gai) you can catch a glimpse of a chicken’s neck and head, some would argue more like that of a turkey but it’s up to you. The second island, Koh Tub, is connected to Chicken Island by a sandy isthmus and people can walk from one to another at low tide.

ON KRABI

KOH JUM & KOH SIBOYA Both are unspoiled tropical hideaways that have a unique atmosphere. Tune in to the slow culture here, imbibe the peace and recharge your batteries with the soundtrack of lapping waves. KOH HONG This island archipelago demands everyone’s attention as it is one of the highlights of Krabi Province. The Archipelago, a group of limestone islands with many hidden caves and lagoons makes it perfect for snorkeling and exploring. Visit Lading and Pakbia islands before Koh Hong as they are much less visited and sport a blend of both lush jungle and tropical waters. Koh hong is usually crowded until 3pm so we recommend visiting other Lading and Pakbia in the morning, then going to Koh Hong after the crowds have started to leave. KOH PHI PHI Private bays, limestone cliffs, waters rich in marine life and caves where swallow’s birds nests are harvested are all here on the island that Leonardo Di Caprio once rolled his hot bod in while filming ‘The Beach’ at the now iconic Maya Bay.

December|2016

KOH LANTA The developing island at the southern end of the province known for its prime sunset views, heaps of activities and glimpses into sea gypsy life. Koh Lanta is also a National Park that comprises many local islands surrounded by coral reefs, such as Koh Ngai, Koh Mook and the remote Koh Rok. LIMESTONE MOUNTAINS These iconic karsts characterize most of the inland area of Krabi, the most spectacular being the crags of Sai Tai, in between Ao Nang and Krabitown. Susaan Hoi is a 40 million yearold seashell cemetery; once a large swamp where freshwater crustaceans proliferated, today it’s home to 40 centimeter thick, shell encrusted limestone slabs, a geologically rather unique and is only 5Km from Ao Nang beach.

KHAO PHANOM BENCHA NATIONAL PARK At 20 km from Krabi Town, the Khao Phanom Bencha national park comprises waterfalls, streams, lush forests and caves. It is home to all kind of flora and wildlife and to the highest mountain in the region from which it takes it’s name. One of the features of the park is Huay Thoi Waterfall where water runs down onto several huge pools. TARNBOK KHORANEE NATIONAL PARK Located in the north of the province, Tarnbok Khoranee national park is made up of limestone mountains, verdant tropical forest, caves and beautiful islands. It is well known kayaking explorers as there are a number of tributaries curving into a number of small caves boasting ancient cave paintings. SA MORAKOT OR THE EMERALD POOL Truly a natural wonder of Krabi: a pond of turquoise water with an average temperature of 30-40°C fed by a hot spring in the middle of the jungle in Klong Thom district, 70 kilometers from Ao Nang. HOT SPRINGS Situated in Klong Thom district, These natural hot springs are natures jacuzzis. They melt away tensions, relieve the body and mind with the fresh spring water running over mineral enriched limestone rocks.

T

CAN’T LOSE WEIGHT??? by Zina Docto

I want to start out by saying right from the gate that I am grieved over the hundreds and thousands of people worldwide who wrestle with their weight. People who have become prisoners to their bodies have lost self-esteem, motivation, purpose and the desire for life. Through my many years as a Health Minister I have had countless people sit before me, both men and women, weeping because of their weight. Now wait! For those of you who are reading this and feeling as if I’m speaking directly to you. I’m going to share some fat free information for you to chew on. My hopes are that by the finish of this read you are encouraged to the point of choosing to discover your health and beauty from the inside out.

18

www.krabi-magazine.com

Let’s look at some staggering statistics which show that 70% of Americans, by the way, 40% of them are youth, are overweight. 50% of Americans claim to be sick and tired most of the time. The other 50% claim to be both overweight, sick and tired. Sadly this leaves us with a nation facing weight issues, which lead to physical, emotional and even spiritual issues. This leads people to seek medical, psychiatric and spiritual care. In most cases the care givers provide medications to help curb the distressed individual. It too, often times causes these persons to become enslaved to yet another vise that does not steer them to the point of real change.

You are in control of the decisions that you make either good or bad. However, during these moments of physical and emotional chaos it sure does not appear to be so. As a matter of fact you may feel completely out of control. Let me assure you that you are not alone in feeling alone and helpless. This is not all your fault. The foods you eat, the advertising you watch or listen to and the people around you influence the decisions that you are making today. We are constantly being bombarded with the invitation of a quick convenient meal from the drive thru. These meals are created with additives and offer very few nutrients to your body. Walking through the grocery store isn’t any easier. You will see isles and isles of beautifully packaged processed foods to choose December| 2016

from. It’s like a store full of Christmas gifts waiting just for you. When friends or family want to visit they usually want to do this over a meal or a cup of coffee. If you have weight issues this can trigger feelings of anxiety if you are in the process of making some personal lifestyle changes. When I initially began the journey to discovering true health I ran into more obstacles than I can count. People around me had lack of knowledge in personal health. Although wellmeaning they gave me nothing more than poor advice. My family did not want to make the changes that I needed to make. In those earlier years it left me with feelings of isolation and

frustration. However, I did not give up; why? I discovered something that I want to share with you. I began to understand what real food was and how food would be my medicine, my fuel and that food was my friend (In the sense that food was not going to harm me but was going to help me). I began to understand the simple principles of nutrition and how when applied to my dietary lifestyle quickly showed me remarkable results towards how my body felt and even looked. I began to question everything that I put in my mouth by simply asking? “Are you live food or dead food”? Once I understood what living food vs. dead food was I had been given one of the biggest keys that unlocked the door to my health and overall well-being. It was no longer about calories, meat,

dairy, cooked, processed or other forms of food. It was simply looking at everything that I put into my body as either something that was a nutrient or a toxin. The more I began to put real food into my body I began to see immediate and incredible results. My health issues declined, my skin began to glow, my nails and hair began to grow, I had tons of energy and began to sleep and wake up feeling rested. This was just the beginning of the many things that I began to experience in those earlier years and still continue to experience today. People are ‘over it’ when it comes to the diet and exercise hype. They see that in the long run these gimmicks don’t’ work. Somewhere in the area of 60% of the people who go on a diet and follow an exercise program fail to not only keep the weight off, they also fail to stay at the gym; why? They’ve yet to discover why they do what they do. They don’t become engaged in a relationship, if you will with food and exercise. Too, they do not realize that weight loss and weight gain is not only a result of what they eat and how much they exercise; there are other components than just those two. Sadly, these people stay on the wheel of guilt and shame as they seemingly lack the will power to endure grueling diets, exercise regimens and the like. All the while they know something is seriously wrong but they just can’t put their finger on exactly what it is. Weight loss can be a sure sign that you are on the road to health if done in a healthy way. When you care for your body your body will care for you; it’s that simple. If you feel that food has been the culprit to your weight gain. Know that food can also cause you to reduce weight, find physical, emotional and even spiritual healing. Food is not your enemy once you know what food is and what it is not.

To spa or not to spa Back in your home country, going to the spa once a month may be considered an indulgence. Here in Thailand, they are an important part of everyday life - so make the most of it!

20

www.krabi-magazine.com

In this day of constant demands from work, life (and, let’s face it, social media…) we can become a little lost and need to take some time out to recharge the batteries. One of the greatest aspects of life in Thailand is the spa culture, and at a fraction of the price in western countries, it would be a shame not to indulge… One way we can achieve this harmony and balance is simply to exercise, getting away from the pull of your smart phone is a great way to get some free time in a fleeting oasis.

hen on holiday or you just want to pamper yourself it’s sometimes a good idea to head down to the spa to treat yourself. From the standard herbal or oil massage to the different facials, scrubs and jacuzzi treatments, there’s something for everyone. Inside the spa it’s not a woman’s only world, men are beginning to see the benefits to spa treatments too. From relaxing muscles and relieving stress, spas are growing in popularity with the male audience. There are a number of significant differences between the many street side massage shops you see lining the streets throughout Thailand and Spa Cenvaree. Your standard street side shop can offer you a temporary relief from that soreness in your shoulder or lower back pain but the relief is only temporary and while you are enjoying that massage, it will be to the tune of the constant foot traffic carousing the streets outside. That being said if you are looking for a truly pampering experience and a complete escape from watchful eyes and the general noise of the public than you need a more discerning spa. A place that takes the time to address your needs

and cater a treatment to suffice. A spa which offers a peaceful ambiance without constant traffic opening and closing doors. There are a few of these such spas in Ao Nang, today we’re exploring Spa Cenvaree.

Well there are a number of different education options available in Krabi, one is to send your child to one of the local public schools in Krabi town or Ao Nang. The issues that this prospect holds, is that typically the Thai schools don’t teach proper English to the students and the schools are rather large, having sometimes up to 2,000 students. There is an alternative option to education available right on our doorstep. Daisy Chains Krabi Montessori is conveniently located behind ‘Rongrian Ao Nang’ or in English, Ao Nang School.

The owner, an Irish-girl, Joy; originally founded ‘Sunflower’ over 5 years ago but has since re-opened as ‘Daisy Chains Krabi Montessori’. A few years on now, Daisy Chains has had many happy kids pass through their doors and continue on their education path to Krabi International School. Daisy Chains is oriented towards the younger generations, with the majority of students being between 1-5 years-old. It follows the Montessori method; the basic philosophy of education is that all children carry within themselves the person they will become. At Daisy Chains Krabi Montessori, all the emphasis is placed on the child. Children are given the opportunity to learn together in a safe, fun, prepared environment with a qualified Montessori teacher. The aim is for the children to have a well-rounded education; developing intellectually, emotionally, physically and socially.

“An important part of a child's up-bringing is their association with some sort of routine” A day at Daisy Chains is quite busy; starting at 8:30am and finishing at 3:30pm; a lot happens for the children in this time; from learning in the classroom to doing activities as well as all the general daily routines such as meal-times, shower and nap-time. These too, are part of the learning process; encouraging each child to develop consideration and respect for other children, teachers and their environment. This also links to the time of the day dedicated to free-play, this is always under the supervision of the teachers. Traditional schooling generally groups children of just one age together, mixed aged groups is a striking difference between Montessori and traditional educational programs. The mixed age group environment creates an atmosphere where children learn to help and be helped by other children, because they interact consistently with children whose age and abilities are varied. Children learn to respect each other and share. Daisy Chains is a great place to enrol your child for a day, a week, month or even year, as they offer many different options for parents. There are no long term contracts needed between parents’ and the school, short term (daily) offers are always available for parents which makes the school a great option for parents here on holiday. Maybe your hotel or resort doesn’t offer baby-sitting options, Daisy Chains can be your solution! If you’re interested in learning more you can visit their website (www.daisychainskrabi.com) or facebook (facebook.com/daisychainskrabi) or give Joy a call on +66 (0)900-671-701.

DIVE IN

Krabi’s coastline spreads over 300 kilometers, making it a great place to find new beaches and get wet while exploring the underwater paradise that surrounds us. If you prefer to go a little deeper and stay longer, you can try SCUBA diving. The entire bay area is quite shallow with most diving locations less than 30 meters in depth. The life underwater is rich and incredibly diverse, with hundreds of different fish, corals and mammals to discover. There are blacktop reef sharks, leopard sharks, numerous parrot fish, pipe fish, nudibranchs and of course the friendly clown fish (or more commonly known as nemo fish).

The underwater world is rich in life, but it is up to us to help preserve it for future generations, so please be considerate with your trash whether you are on a boat or on a beach and always look for a trash bin to dispose of your waste. Thank you!

DECEMBER

TIDE TABLES KRABI

Over 150 islands dot the coastline, offering a plethora of safe havens for fish and coral to live and grow. A number of these islands are only rock outcroppings without any beaches, making them ominous and stunning to look at and great for snorkeling and to experience the amazing underwater life. There are many soft and hard corals that grow underwater and provide small cracks and crevices for fish and small crustaceans to hide in. If you have the breath in you and have the desire, you can head out on a snorkeling expedition and dive in to see what you can find!

FOUR STEPS

J

ust off Ao Nang’s coast, visiting the four Islands is the closest, easiest and most popular way to get a true idea of what a tropical island is. If you only visit one place in Krabi, then these Islands, the ones that can be seen on the horizon from the beach, must be at the top of your list.

Explore unique limestone islands by a traditional long-tail boat. Swimming, snorkeling, sunbathing and photography are the main activities you will be able to enjoy. Expect plenty of sun, turquoise water and white sandy beaches lined with palm trees.

The Four Islands that make up the tour are: Koh Gai, named Chicken Island because of its rock formation that looks like the head of a chicken. One end of the island consists of steep cliffs, while the other end has beautiful beaches along a peninsula. This peninsula gets flooded at high tide, creating a small island. At low tide, you can walk between Koh Gai and Koh Tup. Koh Tup, is only a few hundred meters from Koh Gai and linked to it by a sand bar that is above the surfaces at low tide known in Thai as “Talay Whak”. Koh Poda, a large Island with a coconut plantation at the center. The boats park at one end of a long beach where you can find toilets and some kiosks selling snacks, mostly Thai food such as grilled chicken and Som Tam (papaya salad), fruits and drinks. This part of the beach can get quite busy, but you can walk for about 20 minutes down the beach, it is really well worth the walk and you will almost certainly find sections of peace. Last but not least, you will end the tour by visiting Railay Beach. The four main areas of Railay consist of Phranang, West Railay, East Railay, and Ton Sai. Phranang Cave is a sacred place to the sea gypsies in the area and you can see many shrines in there. The cave, on the East side of the Railay Bay is famous for its wonderful stalactites and stalagmites. Since ancient times, Phranang (meaning “Princess”) Cave has been where fishermen, before going out to sea, have made offerings to the symbolic Phallus of Shiva (known as the “Siwaleung” or “Palad Khik” in Thai). The fishermen, who say the cave is the home of a mythical sea princess, believe their offerings will bring them success in their fishing and protect them from danger, but what is more remarkable is that the cave contains a large collection of carved wooden phallic symbols, offerings and other objects believed to help with fertility.

30

T O PA R A D I S E

WHAT TO DO East Railay Beach is the docking point for boats arriving from Krabi. The East Beach is primarily covered in dense mangrove which is unsuitable for swimming. On the Northern end of the waterfront there is a commercial area along a promenade with many restaurants and bars and various services including a Muay Thai school and lower-priced resorts than in West Railay. West Railay Beach, connected to the East side by paths through the large resorts or by trails through thin jungle cover, is the primary destination for beach-goers. The beach is flanked by high limestone cliffs on either side. The focal point of West Railay Beach is centered on a short walking street lined with restaurants and shops. Ton Sai is the place to be for climbers and backpackers with a more rustic character than the glitz of West Railay and the shops and restaurants of the East Railay boardwalk.

GET DOWN AT DEEP

Deep has been operating in Krabi town for the past 3 years now, slowly making a name for itself as the jazz hotspot in town. Down a small side street just up the road from the famous Maharaj (or morning) market Deep is located in a rather inconspicuous spot. It’s neighbors are a range of office shops and homes making Deep stand out as one of the few establishments patrons frequent on the street.

38

www.krabi-magazine.com

A quality lounge bar offering a plethora of Jazz musical styles set in quality location; quiet and secluded yet still still bustling with life, energy and great atmosphere. Founded over 3 years by a couple passionate about music, passionate about life and passionate about doing better. As longtime fans of a range of musical styles they would often have the need to go to a music venue, a club or just a chilled out lounge style bar and listen to great music. One problem for them was that Krabi as a whole doesn’t offer much of an option for those that are in need of these things. So as any passionate person would do when there is not what one needs, they build it. So build it they did. Now operating 6 nights a week and offering nightly themed music styles Deep is cranking out great nights and keeping the tunes flowing. From Thai jazz, classical jazz to swing jazz and blues, every night is special and every night is amazing. Monday-Thursday are dedicated to a range of musical styles such as: Indy folk, Indy blues, swing jazz, electronic jazz, jazzy lounge and deep house. If you’re desired flavor is not on the list, you can always ask the bartender to see if he’s got something different on the musical menu. Fridays are live nights, dedicated to swing jazz played in both the English and Thai varieties. Saturdays are dedicated to Thai jazz, celebrating this fusion music, born in the deep south and reborn in old siam. The atmosphere is something of a mix between new age modern style and brash wooden armchairs, something of an antique feeling. It’s a great mixture of the styles that works seamlessly together. The large drink menu printed on the wall so you cannot miss it and the lightbulbs glow rich and look as if they have been taken from one of Thomas Edison’s first rounds of production. December| 2016

The cocktails served are nothing short of truly fantastic. A personal favorite is the classic old fashioned but I also enjoyed the mojito and Singapore sling, it’s all up to you but every cocktail is made with time and care leaving you with a near work of art when it reaches your table. The food served at Deep is a range of simple eats, steak bits, sautéed potatoes, many homemade sauces which are to die for. It’s all there, everything you need to get full but not overdo it. The atmosphere and ambiance is what makes Deep so special, the dimly lit area as a whole gives a sort of mystical, soothing tone to the area. One of the owners is actually a musician himself, so you might get lucky enough (or he might get drunk enough) to get up on stage and play a couple of his own songs. There is nightly specials at Deep which change time to time so in order to see the current up to date information visit their facebook page here: www. facebook.com/deeploungekrabi Or you can call: +66(0)9 1821 6626 Any trip to deep has proven itself over and again as a unique establishment in somewhat of a sea of ordinary.

No one flies alone...

Let me introduce you to Jimi Arcalas, a man with big dreams and one living the life that many only dream of. Spending the day at the IDEAS Ao Nang Fiore Zipline

Adventure Park, nestled amongst statuesque trees , alongside an organic herb and vegetable garden is a must when you come on

46

holiday to Krabi, Thailand. This excursion is easily one of the most sought after experiences for those coming to our lovely sea village, located here in Ao Nang. Those looking for the

extreme adventure flock to the zipline park to get their adrenalin fix. Looking for a rush that almost cannot be put into words and to check off yet another journey from their bucket list.

F

or some the idea of ziplining sends chills down their spin. Never in their wildest dreams would they imagine themselves soaring high above the ground on the many rides created for the thrill seeker. As a matter of fact they lose their breath and begin to feel very anxious at such a thought. These people are the 'not so' adventurous kind. As they think of such a feat they get upset at themselves because in the recess of their mind they truly would love to have an “Tarzan experience but fear takes up so much space in their mind they shrink back to accepting the fact that they will never ever fulfill this fantasy. However, there's help!

If you dare to go to the Ao Nang Fiore Zipline Adventure Park there is a very probably chance that you will meet Jimi; the visionary behind the park. Having created a plethora of zipline adventures throughout Thailand as well as this one, he would have a few words to share with you about the adventures of ziplining. He came from a background in hotel management and has always known that customer service is at the top of his priority list in making sure that

YOU FORGOT TO DELETE THIS PARAGRAPH

guests are always satisfied. He kept that in mind when he started designing and configuring zipline adventures. He knew that there would be those who would have absolutely no fear to go extreme but he also knew there would be others, if not most, who would not throw caution to the wind as easily as the daredevils. He was sure to create each game (as he calls them) to be fun, adventurous and an opportunity to play with your imagination a bit. You know, to

bring out the child in each player. He always says, “ziplining is not a one man show. It takes a team to zipline”. With that he says that he is so happy to be at the Ao Nang Fiore Resort and to manager the Zipline Adventure Park. He feels indebted to the owner Khun Somkiat for being so supportive in allowing the Zipline Adventure Park to go from an over imaginative dream to a reality. He just loves working with this group of amazing people. In speaking with him about his team and leadership he said, “I just love this place”. He feels as if he has landed at the end of the rainbow. He laughed as he shared many of the zipline adventures he has had with the players (guests). He said that ziplining has made him young again. His days are filled with laughter, thrills and an opportunity to meet people from all around the world. He's living his dream job everyday.

As he lives his dream everyday he wants his players dreams to come true as well. Even the player that comes in with reservation, trepidation and hesitation. He assures his players of a great experience no matter what their courage level is. He loves to help people face their fears for the first time and he says if your lucky you'll get him as your guide. Every morning he and his team secure the safety of each game by literally playing the games themselves; each and everyone of them. His motto for his players is “No one flies alone”. So get yourself to the zipline park and they will harness you in for the flight of your life.

Rarely is Jimi not to be found at the Ao Nang Fiore Zipline Adventure Park. They are open seven days a week, 9-5pm daily. Go and meet the legend yourself and you see just how he lives to soar above it all and to have people just like you laugh him into living like a king; the king of the zipline. Phone: 075-695-5223

FRIENDS PARK

Ao Nang’s newest spot to come For both parents and kids alike

50

www.krabi-magazine.com

Friends park was just completed earlier this year by 2 travelers looking to start a new life for themselves and their daughter. Picking Ao Nang after numerous vacations to the area they decided to make this place their new home. The concept to start a park built for children and families came about when they realized Ao Nang was in a serious void of any such park, and having a daughter themselves they know how important it is for parents to have a place to take their kids.

We got to meet the owners Svetlana and Evgeniy and talk with them about their story, 1. Tell us where you are from and why you decided to move to Thailand? ‘We are from the capital city of Siberia, Novosibirsk Russia. The decision to move to Thailand was not taken lightly. In Russia we had a stable life, but we have always been drawn to Thailand; the sun, the sea, the many beautiful beaches, the people but more just the people here are so warm and friendly. Our move to Thailand - cam from a desire for a radical change in our lives, the wish to try something new, to broaden our horizon of our world. 2. How was the idea of the park born? The idea of the park was born after the decision to move to Thailand. We spent three months in Krabi and faced with a big problem , there is no place where you can sit with your child, play some games in an outdoor, safe and comfortable environment while getting a meal. A place where families could spend the evening together, play a game of billiards, have a dinner with a bottle of wine, all that while the child was busy with some games, stimulating them instead of juts plugging into an ipad. 3. Tell us about "Friends Park".

JUST

Name Friends Park came as soon as the idea of its creation was born itself. We are a very family friendly and we have been at home and plan to continue to do the same in Thailand. It is simple, we tried to create the same atmosphere in the park. 4. Tell us about your park? What activities are there for both kids and adults? Friends Park is for children of different ages, for example the Children’s trampoline is for kids from 1 year and up, the trampoline bungee is for children from 5 years and up and the large inflatable town "Dragon" with slides is for children starting at 3 years. For younger kids we have a games room where children can come together to paint and play with toys, where they can interact with other kids and also with their parents. While the kids are busy with the outdoor activities or art play place, adults can play other games such as billiards, ping-pong, backgammon, chess or darts. Or just relax and enjoy a tasty barbecue, a lamb kebab or some of the traditional Russian food available on the menu, washing it all down with a cocktail, beer or glass of wine. The park was created with families in mind but that doesn’t mean couples cane come to enjoy the area, play some pool, grab a bite to eat and take a stroll through the green. Perfect for families on holidays who wont want to stick around huge crowds, but also a great place for those who live in krabi and are looking for something different form the usual options available.

For millennia we have been drawn to the sea. For it’s endless possibilities, for it’s ability to challenge us, for the profit and bounty one can reap from the waves to the friendship that can be trusted and tested on the open ocean, we are drawn to those blue waters. Our ocean has always been a place where great endeavors have taken place, where boys become men, where men get tough and men get lost. The local waters off the beach coastline of Krabi are no different. Yes they can have the appearance that they are calm and relaxing yet don’t let this fool you in moderate winds the Andaman ocean can be a rocky place. Nearly every year a few boats capsize in the greater Ao Nang area, almost every year at least a few souls take their last breaths on these blue waters, and every year the community which depends on these waters continues to thrive.

With the thousands and thousands of people coming to Krabi every year and this number continues to rise every year the demand for the famous cuisine continues to rise. A great number of people coming to Krabi are coming here to try the famous seafood of the region, barracuda, squid, red snapper, grouper, lobster and so on and so on. This increased demand for the local cuisines has lead to an explosion in the number of fishing vessels operating in these waters. With many an eager soul to man these vessels are in no shortage of tough labor, pulling nets, stringing lines, cleaning traps and preparing the great variety of sea creatures for their final destinations. A particular desire in the tourist and local flavor is the desire for squid, the love of this varied and mystical creature is so alluring that it can be found in almost every street stall, restaurant and market. It comes in many forms, salted, dried, fresh, hot on the BBQ and much more, it’s a crowd favorite for both locals and tourists alike. These alluring creatures come in all sizes and shapes, from the depths of the Atlantic ocean and the giant squid a mysterious creatures through to sink ocean going ships venturing out into the open ocean. To the smaller varieties who have translucent body but emit a variety of colors depending on their feelings and emotions. Squid are a most varied species of sea creatures and inhabit nearly every ocean. The interesting with these alluring creatures is how they are caught, without the traditional net method and the lack of a normal mouth (as fish posses) these creatures require a special method to capture and bring home to your plate.

DELETE THIS PARAGRAPH

This past month we had the luck and opportunity to take a trip on a local squid fishing vessel in order to learn how they do what they do and gain some insight into the lives of the people that work tirelessly to fill our plates. Breaking the dawn on the calm beach of Klong Muang the many squid fisherman awake from their seaside tin shakes to prepare for the day and night to come. preparing batteries, bottles of gasoline, food and an occasional pack of cigarettes they being to pack their many boats for the upcoming night on the boats. They take off from land at 2pm daily and venture to the deeper waters just outside the tidal shelf which surrounds the coastline. Good squid fishing occurs in water between 15 meters and 40 meters so the boatmen don’t have the venture too far out to sea in order to fill their hulls. The boats fish with use a most interesting method to coax squid to rise from the darkness below. With squid attracted to light the boats have been rigged up with an obvious solution; high powered light bulbs connected to a generator make up the majority of the fishing bait. The light bulbs are strung out on 2 arms which extend out on either side of the boat making the boat look like air airplane with it’s wings illuminated as it glides through the waves. The boats make the journey to the fishing grounds nightly and are packed to the brim with able-bodied fishermen, some boats can have a crew up to 25 people at one time. Keep in mind these boats are no longer than 15 meters, so there is a lot of traffic going on at all times on these vessels. There is some sort of order to this chaotic environment as the men aboard these vessels seem to just work as a solid unit, nobody is bumping into one another, they all have a job and place and follow their duties as a cohesive unit. December| 2016

57

The vessels trawl the fishing grounds until their hulls are full or until the sun comes up, whichever is first. That being said a number of the more courageous crews will brave the days at sea in the intense heat of the afternoon sun to avoid returning to shore until their cargo container is full. These times at sea can last up to 14 days. Once back at shore the men jump to work processing their catch. Some end up on the massive drying racks which dot the beach air and sun drying their catch for longer preservation. Some are kept on ice and are brought to market for sale to resorts, locals and hotels. The crews aboard the vessels will typically be given a percent of the daily catch (less boat expenses and owners salary) this amount can end up being only 200THB/head in some cases. The world of Squid fishing is something to behold, grueling working condition for rather low wages. These are the men that give us the chance to taste the bounty of the sea. Next time you order some squid, think of the hard working men who made it possible.

Loving stray dogs, one day at a time. Stray dogs - sometimes known as ‘Soi Dogs’ in Thailand - have been an ongoing issue throughout Thailand for decades now. They are common throughout the kingdom in rural areas as well as urban centers. Generally Thai people are tolerant of them but many are not. Those not tolerant of these stray dogs have been found the beat, stab, poison, burn and generally just abuse these dogs, sometimes causing irreversible damage. The growing concerns over stray dogs is starting to be discussed by governing bodies but it’s still very much in it’s infancy and we will not see any real government sponsored progress for years to come. This means it’s up to the private sector to supply these dogs with treatment, care and trying to educate the youth on proper behavior towards stray animals. In Koh Lanta one such woman is doing just that, Junie Kovacs.

60

www.krabi-magazine.com

Junie came to Koh Lanta originally to found a cooking school, Time for Lime which she opened due to her love for Thai cuisine and her desire to share this love with others. Soon after opening her doors she began to notice the huge number of stray dogs and cats on Koh Lanta. This being the place she was now to call home and work she knew something must be done about this issue. Knowing that Koh Lanta has nothing in that's centers, she would have to build it herself. So thats what she did exactly, with the profits from running her Time for Lime cooking school and also a few donations for local businesses she was able to build a proper shelter and offer a place to care for dogs in a safe and comfortable environment. Understanding one of the main issues with this amount of stray dogs on Koh Lanta is simply the lack of sterilization, so one of the important issues was addresses in the planning stages sourcing a reliable vet to perform the surgeries as well as building a dedicated room for the procedures. Since Lanta Animal Welfare opening it’s doors there has been a 90% reduction in stray dogs and cats found throughout Koh Lanta. Focusing intensely on sterilization and after seeing the dramatic effects of it on Koh Lanta Junie decided to offer this as a mobile clinic in outlying districts of Krabi and beyond. These mobile clinics have been extremely successful sterilizing up to 40 animals in a single day. It all comes down to sterilization, if you reduce the ability for irresponsible dogs and cats to procreate then the number of offspring born into less then suitable homes will reduce, it’s that simple. Sterilization is not always the correct choice for pet owners and this is up to the owners themselves but when it comes to overpopulating of homeless dogs, this is the only way. December| 2016

61

Opening their doors in 2007 Lanta Animal Welfare has since become a landmark on Koh Lanta and beyond. Gaining the support for many of the small and large businesses on Koh Lanta and even partnering with such organization such as Soi Dogs on many of their mobile clinics. Sterilization of dogs not all that Lanta Animal Welfare does. Due to the abuse on dogs on Koh lanta Lanta Animal Welfare offers extensive medical care and monitoring for any attack or injury one could imaging. This has meant extra veterinary staff and many volunteers on hand to help change bandages, feed and water animals, and also monitor their improvement. In fact most the whole center is basically run by volunteers, if it were not for the hard working determination of the volunteers from all over the world, Lanta Animal Welfare would not be possible. Lanta Animal Welfare is a non profit private organization meaning all of it’s funding comes directly from private donations and from Junie’s Time for Lime cooking school. This is rather impressive as there are over 50 animals being cared for at any one time at Lanta Animal Welfare, all of them require medicine, food and care every day. Lanta Animal Welfare has made some impressive changes over the year for stray dogs and cats on Koh Lanta and beyond, helping not only the animals themselves but also the perception of how a dog or cat should be treated. Now sponsoring a new building project, the kitty city which will be a large outdoor cat enclosure. this new kitty city will be built again totally on donations from local businesses and private donors. The kitty city is designed to help allow more cats to be housed on site at Lanta Animal Welfare while also allowing local schools to come, see, interact with the cats and learn from Junie and her volunteers. Lanta Animal Welfare has been changing lives for over 6 years now but not only for the animals they take in and treat. Offering people from around the world who want to adopt one or more of the animals at the center the opportunity to do so. Lanta Animal Welfare also provides all proper documentation for the animals, they also arrange transportation. This offers the dogs and cats the chance at a new life, with a family who loves and cares for them while also giving a family who wants to change a life and better this town families the chance to do so. THE SUNSET ISLAND Koh Lanta consists of two islands, Koh Lanta Noi and Koh Lanta Yai. Koh Lanta Noi is the smaller of the two and does not have tourist facilities. Visitors travelling by road from the mainland pass through the smaller island on the way to Koh Lanta Yai - the center of it all.

B

an Sala Dan village on the north side of the island is Lanta Yai’s commercial center and the pier where visitors arrive on the island. It is a row of shops, seafood restaurants on stilts, dive shops, tour operators, banks, and guest houses that cater to newcomers. The bulk of the Lanta beaches lie along the west coast – hence it’s often referred to as “The Sunset Island” – and can be reached by road. Khao Kwang, Khlong Dao, and Phra Ae have long stretches of white sand facing the Andaman sea, while Khlong Khong, Khlong Nin, and Ba Kan Tiang, and other smaller bays take in more dramatic views and are less crowded for swimming. Ba Kantiang Bay has spectacular crystal-clear seawater, soft white sand, romantic sunsets in utmost privacy. It’s the picture of a postcard, symbolizing a luxe hideaway in Lanta for relaxing in natural surroundings.

64

Known as Ban San Kau, this sea gypsy’s settlement is based on south-east Lanta Yai. It is there that an old clan of traditional Chao Ley try to preserve a disappearing way of life in this fast-developing island. Once called Ban Si Raya, Old Town was historically a commercial port for Chinese and Arabic trading boats that sailed between the ports of Phuket, Penang, and Singapore. Today it is a village with a few rows of stilted shop houses and home to an ancient community that was established on the island long ago. It’s a picturesque place dating back 100 years, from the old days of sea trading. Near the shacks along the coast, local fishermen still dock their longtail boats and make for an authentic snapshot of local life.

unplug in KOH JUM

Geography brought electricity to Koh Jum late in 2009 as the island was in the direct path of the new underwater electric cable connecting Koh Phi Phi to the mainland. Now that Koh Jum is plugged-in, has it lost its reputable character that has attracted intrepid travelers over the past couple of decades? We are pleased to report that Koh Jum is still as tranquil and laid back as it always has been. In fact, what is most noticeable are the lack of noisy generators found at most of the islands resorts. Folks come to Koh Jum to tune out; the island’s nature and culture dominate the minimal tourist infrastructure. The existing resorts on Koh Jum have their own family run character, ranging from the backpackers’ paradise to luxurious beach villas. Koh Pu Mountain is the dominant geological feature on the island at over 400 meters. It’s a great hike for the adventurous and a vital refuge of native habitat still harboring Asian Pied Hornbills and Burmese pythons. The three villages, Koh Pu, Ting Rai, and Koh Jum are situated on the back side of the island, amongst the mangroves while the resorts are located opposite, facing the open Andaman Sea. This division allows the villagers to remain authentic without a significant tourist infrastructure while the resorts are all located on the beaches. Koh Jum is predominately a large Muslim populated sub-district of Krabi, home to over 1,500 inhabitants. The locals of these villages engage mostly in fishing, rubber cultivation and the local crafts of cloth

72

weaving and painting or “batik” as it is known here. While the north is mountainous, the south is comprised of dense jungle, cashew nut trees, rubber plantations, casuarinas, and nipa-palms. Since all the resorts face west, there are epic sunsets to be had all along the

island. The renowned Koh Jum Lodge is an excellent place to stay for a few days, and has superb views to boot. Access to the island is by longtail taxi boats which leave from the mainland at the port town of Laem Kruat.

Jum using the Krabi-Koh Lanta ferry which stops at two locations on Koh Jum, both of which are offshore so local longtail boats will come from the island to pick up passengers. The lack of any deep ports on the island keep the ferry boats out at sea and almost prevent large masses of tourists from overcrowding the island. Getting here is quite an adventure and this ends up defining the interesting community of resorts and visitors that have made this island their home and the place they return to year after year. Getting to Koh Jum can be very simple or a bit of a nightmare – it all depends on how much you know about it. This is where Krabi magazine can help. We recently took the trip to Koh Jum ourselves and have decided to share the adventure with our readers. There are two ways to get to Koh Jum by passing ferry or longtail boat. The ferries leave from Koh Lanta at 8am and from Krabi at 11am, and both stop as they pass alongside Koh Jum and signal to longtail boats to come and pick up visitors to land ashore at Koh Jum. Koh Phi Phi also has ferries which leave at 2pm and operate on the same principle as above.

There is now a songthaew you can take direct from Krabi Town to Laem Kruat. During the high season most visitors come to Koh www.krabi-magazine.com

The second way to get to Koh Jum is to go to the port town of Laem Kruat, from where you can catch a longtail boat directly to Koh Jum. This was our favorite of the two methods of travel. If you are driving, it takes about one hour to get from Ao Nang to Laem Kruat. You just head to Tesco Lotus and then continue until you see the large overhead signs which tell you to turn right for “Koh Jam”. This road will lead to the small locality of Laem Kruat, where you will find a large pier with boats going to Koh Jum. If you don’t have transport of your own, you can always catch a blue and yellow “songthaew” – the local buses that have benches in the back. On the side of the “songthaew” will be written – Krabi, Bus Station, Tesco, Big C, Laem Kruat. They are frequent and easy to spot. These buses will leave from all of these locations at intervals throughout the day and will take you directly to the Laem Kruat pier. The pier is a bit misleading. We waited at the end of the pier before realizing the longtail taxis were passing us by and docking at the mainland. We went back and followed our noses along past the shops until we saw a slipway with goods and people being unloaded. It was the second slipway we needed to get to “Moo Too,” the place on Koh Jum we were being collected from. If you know the name of the pier on Koh Jum you need to get to, just ask anyone in this area and they will direct you to the correct boat. We got on and soon were chugging along through the mangroves with a boat full of happy local Muslim women that looked as if they hadn’t changed a bit since 1925. We arrived at Koh Jum just 45 minutes later, paid our 70 baht fare, and were taken by “taxi” (a battered old pickup truck) through the winding dirt track until we reached our destination resort. Give it a go and you will see a different side of Thailand from years gone by. Well worth the experience.
