WINDOW ON KRABI 12

www.krabi-magazine.com

AO NANG BEACH at 20km from Krabi Town is the most developed of Krabi’s beaches; a long stretch of white sand with limestone karsts as a backdrop. All of your accommodation, shopping and service needs are found here. This is the hub from which to plan your trip at sea and to the nearby islands on a typical longtail boat. NOPPHARAT THARA BEACH just around the corner from Ao Nang, is 3km long yet still undeveloped, with only a few resorts and bars. Attractive because of its natural setting, this is where local youngsters and families gather at sunset and on weekends with picnics. Savour some local Muslim snacks at the beach stalls, or fill yourself with seafood in the local restaurants at the very end of the beach, near the Noppharat Thara National Park headquarters. At low tide, walk out together with millions of small crabs on the sandy pathways to the small islands near the beach. KLONG MUANG BEACH is a further 20km away from Ao Nang; it is the up-market side of Krabi, the place to be if you are after a peaceful holiday. Catering to families and couples, it is here that you really get that well deserved repose, surrounded by pristine nature. RAILAY AND TONSAI BEACHES are split and separated from Krabi and Ao Nang by monumental limestone mountains. Railay has two sides, east and west, and its settings are simply marvelous: crystal clear waters, pure sandy beaches, lush mountains, and rocky islands emerging from the sea. Both beaches are known the world over for their majestic climbing routes. They can only be reached by boat, a 15-minute ride from Ao Nang or 30 minutes from Krabi Town. Enjoy a cocktail in one of the beach bars, visit the Phranang Cave, challenge yourself on a rock climbing or cliff jumping course (yes, into the sea!), hike the limestone massif to a lagoon and a viewpoint, or simply chill out.

KOH LANTA BEACHES have a wide selection of resorts for all tastes and pockets. Lanta Yai island has long stretches of gleaming white sandy beaches and shallow emerald waters. Lined with tropical vegetation, a private spot is never more than a short walk away on a southern beach at Lanta Yai. TUBKAEK BEACH Another real place to hide away; long, clean and powerful, the area boasts breathtaking views over the Koh Hong archipelago and provides for wonderfully charming sunsets. From Tubkeak beach you can venture inside the National Park and try the nature trail to one of the most spectacular viewpoints in Krabi. KOH PODA This is the iconic island of Krabi and the first and most dramatic one you seem from Ao Nang beach. Hop on a longtail boat - the local wooden boats with their picturesque prow and sail away surrounded by turquoise waters. CHICKEN ISLAND This should be next on your list as it is right next to Koh Poda. From the right angle when passing Chicken Island (Koh Chicken) you can catch a glimpse of a chickens neck and head, some would argue more like that of a turkey but it’s up to you. You know those postcards with people walking on a sandy isthmus that connects to another island? Yep, here the second island is Koh Tub and is only accessible at low tide. KOH HONG This island archipelago demands everyone’s attention as it is one of the highlight of Krabi province. The Archipelago, a group of limestone islands with many a hidden caves and lagoons make it perfect for snorkeling and exploration. Make sure you stop at Lading island after Koh Hong as it is much less visited and sports a blend of both lush jungle and tropical waters. KOH PHI PHI Private bays, limestone cliffs, waters rich in marine life and caves where swallow’s nests are harvested are all here on the island that Leonardo Di Caprio once rolled his hot bod in while filming “The beach” at the now iconic Maya Bay.

KOH JUM & KOH SIBOYA Both are unspoiled tropical hideaways that have a unique atmosphere. Tune in to the slow culture here, imbibe the peace, and recharge your batteries with the soundtrack of lapping waves. KOH LANTA the developing island at the southern end of the province known for its prime sunset viewing spots , heaps of activities, and glimpses into sea gypsy life, is where you will meet nature and tradition. It’s also a National Park area that comprises many different islands surrounded by coral reefs, such as Koh Ngai, Koh Mook and the remote Koh Rok. LIMESTONE MOUNTAINS or karsts characterize most of the inland Krabi area, the most spectacular being the crags of Sai Tai. Susaan Hoi is a 40 million yearold seashell cemetery; once a large swamp where freshwater crustaceans proliferated, today it’s home to 40 centimeter thick, shell encrusted limestone slabs, a geological uniqueness not far from Ao Nang. KHAO PHANOM BENCHA NATIONAL PARK at 20km from Krabi Town, comprises waterfalls, streams, lush forests and caves. It is home to all kind of flora and wildlife and to the highest mountain in the region from which it takes the name. One of the features of the park is Huay Toh Waterfall where water runs down onto several huge pools that you can swim in. TARNBOK KHORANEE NATIONAL PARK in the north of the region, consists of limestone mountains, verdant tropical forest, caves and beautiful islands. It is well known for its different species of trees growing around a large natural crystal clear pool, and for the hundreds of birds’ species. SA MORAKOT OR THE EMERALD POOL is a natural wonder: a pond of turquoise water with an average temperature of 30-40C, fed by a hot spring in the middle of the jungle. HOT SPRINGS Hot Springs of Klong Thom, natural Jacuzzis that melt away tensions and relieve body and mind with the mineral enriched waters falling into rocky ponds.

KLONG MUANG/TUB KEAK BEACH CLEANUP The past month the majority of the local large resorts in Klong Muang/Nong Thale area hosted a beach cleanup of the revered Klong Muang Beach and surrounding area. The beach is home to a number of local squid fisherman as well as a number of 5 star resorts such as The Dusit Thani, The Sofitel, Beyond Resort, Nakamanda Resort and Spa, The Anyavee Tubkeak Resort and the Amari to name a few. The resorts showed great consideration and community involvement bringing together a number of school children and educating them about the importance of keeping our environment clean and organized. TAT (Thailand Authority Tourism) Governor Yuthasak Supasorn announced that Thailands leading tourism body will begin to promote traveling packages with neighboring countries such as Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar and Vietnam. The effort is in effect to make up for a lacking European market and alarmingly low number of Russian tourists (only 2 years Russian tourists made up almost 30% of the entire tourist market in Thailand). Thailand depends on tourism to make up almost 15% of its entire GDP so when the number of visitors get a little stagnant TAT must look for new ways to improve the appeal of Thailand as a travel destination. In addition to the regional tourism TAT will also be promoting Wedding and honeymoon package tourism for the Asian audience, as well as green tourism to a global audience. The focus which prevails over all areas of focus will be the emphasis on quality tourists coming to Thailand. The effects of these focus points will become evident in the coming months. good

eating

This month Suzi Hall writes about healthy eating in Thailand.

Recently, I have seriously considered designing a F.A.Q t-shirt for the benefit of all the people I meet on a professional and personal level. As a personal trainer the ‘million dollar’ question I get asked with regular vigour is; What should I eat? My outlook on nutrition has always been one of balance, if you pig out and have a treat (or two) or heavy night, endeavour to eat and drink well the next day. A good depiction of this is the 80/20 rule. Eat well Monday to Friday and relax at the weekends with the pizza and red wine you have been fantasising about since Monday. Visitors to Thailand eating predominantly in restaurants can find it hard to focus on healthy eating, especially as sugar and salt is added to everything you eat and drink! It is a country famous for its delicious cuisine, which mistakenly tourists only consider to be Green Curry and Phad Thai. Local meals include steamed rice, a watery curry with vegetables or meat, smoked fish and eggs. No heavy coconut cream and oils.

Tops Tips for Snacks Apples, lycees and magosteen from market Nuts: Almonds are great, also ground nuts and broad beans (available at 7/11) Yogurts (plain as possible) Wasabi peas Fruit shake (no sugar in Thai: mai naam-dtaan ka/krap) Boiled eggs from 7/11

Through my own experience and frustration of not having steamed or raw veggies I have found a way to eat very well here. I visit the local markets twice a week stocking up on fruits, vegetables and a ton of coriander, which is great with tuna in a salad. I get tinned fish for my omega 6 and nuts for my omega 3. An apple everyday, yogurts for a snack attack and porridge with honey for breakie (I also have a stash of Marmite, for my bread and butter days) There is also a vast assortment of dishes you can try in Thailand that are light and nutritious. These are some of my favourites;

Kanom Jeen (Literal translation Chinese candy) This is a simple breakfast/lunchtime meal of rice noodles topped with a curry sauce that varies from sweet to ‘blind you spicy’. It is served with a variety of leafy herbs, green vegetables like cucumber, long beans and raw eggplant, you can also add a boiled egg and some picked veggies. The idea is ’add all you want’ to your dish, seconds and thirds, just pack yourself full of good, green, happy foods.

Som Tam (Papaya Salad) Made with unripe papayas mixed with string beans, tomatoes and chillies. All of these are thrashed together using a pestle and mortar with garlic, lemon juice and fish sauce. (Pet or Mai pet is up to you) Yam Mamuoang is similar but made with sour mango, one to try.

Larb (chicken, pork, beef or duck) Minced meat mixed with chilli, coriander and garlic served with sticky rice and som tam. Simple, healthy and tasty!

Tom Yum A staple of mine! You cannot beat the hot, spicy soup and kick ass health properties of ginger, chilli and lemongrass. Have it spicy with prawns or pork, a side of rice and ride the ‘chilli train’! Be adventurous with your meal choices, try the variety of scrumptious Thai food available and eat it spicy (chilli has an enormous number of health benefits) In a country that is obsessed with eating, their greeting basically asks not how you are, but have you eaten? It would be a shame not to…

Thai Chili’s or Birds eye chilis, are believe it or not a native of Thailand, they actually originated from the west indies in the Caribbean sea where they have always been a part of the local staple diet. As a result of trading and the baby footprints of globalization and colonalization, the Spanish and Portuguese brought the hot spice through the Indian ocean and into Southeast Asia.

hili

In the Indian ocean region, India was actually the first country after trading with the merchants from Portugal, Holland and Spain to grow and use chilies in their everyday dishes. It is often assumed that the Chili grows naturally in India and Thailand, but this is not the case. Yes, it can grow there but it is not an indigenous plant species. Imagine Thai and Indian cuisine before the introduction of the potent and robust Birds eye chili? I personally cannot imagine Thai food without spice. Red chilies contain high amounts of vitamin C and beta-carotene, making them both extremely healthy for your skin and vision. Yellow and green chilis are essentially unripe fruit and therefore contain a considerably lower amount of both substances. Chilis are also a good source of vitamin B, in particular vitamin B6 and are also very high in potassium, magnesium and iron, making them a great healthy choice to add to many dishes for some added punch! All hot chili peppers contain phytochemicals known collectively as capsaicinoids. These chemicals are reputed to have powerful health benefits such as helping protect the body against cancer, helping weight loss for the obese, reducing bad cholesterol in the bloodstream and they may even play a role in alleviating chronic pain due to the powerful analgesic effects of the capsaicinoids. Chili’s strong and spicy taste has become a distinctive characteristic of Thai cuisine and can be found in nearly every dish you can get your hands on. Since its arrival in Thailand during the Ayuthaya era more than 600 years ago, Thai cuisine has received influences from a number of foreign nations. Chilis have taken several hundred years to become an essential part of Thai food culture and has since become inseparable to most Thai dishes. Today Southeast Asia is the main exporter of chillies to the rest of the world.

DIVE IN February tide tables Krabi

Krabi’s coastline spreads over 300 kilometers, making it a great place to find new beaches and get wet while exploring the underwater paradise that surrounds us. Over 150 islands dot the coastline offering a plethora of safe havens for fish and coral to live and grow. A number of these islands are only rock outcroppings without any beaches making them ominous and stunning to look at and great for snorkelling in to experience the amazing underwater life. There are many soft and hard corals that grow underwater and provide small cracks and crevices for fish and small crustaceans to hide in. If you have the breath in you and have the desire you can head out on a snorkeling expedition and dive in to see what you can find! If you prefer to go a little deeper and stay longer, you can try SCUBA diving. The entire bay area is quite shallow (relatively speaking) with most diving locations less than 30 meters in depth. The life underwater is rich and incredibly diverse, with hundreds of different fish, corals and mammals to discover. There are blacktop reef sharks, leopard sharks, numerous parrot fish, pipe fish, nudibranchs and of course the friendly clown fish (or more commonly known as nemo fish). The underwater world is rich in life but it is up to us to help preserve it for future generations, so please be considerate with your trash whether you are on a boat or on a beach and always look for a trash bin to dispose of your waste. Thank you!

ALL HAIL THE YOUNG ONES!

January was the month for Children all around the world. It was a time to celebrate the innocence, beauty and freedom of our future generation. Children are the most precious things in our lives and many of us can forget sometimes that all we need to to do to show our love to them, is to spend time with them. Many of the children of Krabi come from underprivileged households and lack the necessary means to be provided with the best of clothes and opportunities. Therefore, a number of the local resorts have taken it on themselves to offer community outreach programs around the province. They visit these locals schools provide the children with gifts and some short lessons on life. This month Centara Anda Dhevi and Centara Grand Beach Villas made it a point to visit the Ban Klong Heang school for children aged 5-11. Both hotels were represented by a number of their staff and of course both hotel General Managers were present offering the students inspiring speeches and leading the way with a number of games. The day was a great success as could be seen from the looks on the childrens’ faces. A number of the children were able to stand up and give performances which they’d practiced prior to the event, for which they were all awarded prizes and given encouragement from the hotel staff and other classmates. Our children carry the touch of humanity, the next wave of inventions, ideas, music, fashion, and much more. So cherish them, love them, nurture their ideas and creativity. But don’t forget the kid still inside you, make a silly face and laugh at yourself, I do every day.

The Truth About Heat Exhaustion and Heat Stroke By. Dr Daranee, MD staff at Wattanapat Hospital Trang

Many people on vacation find themselves suddenly in a very warm tropical environment which can be a big change from their home climate. They may have been in the dead of winter just a few short hours earlier. With a body that was acclimated to freezing temperatures now in the heat of the tropics, strange things can happen. Heat Stroke is one of those things and is a serious condition that can develop quickly and sometimes be deadly. WHO IS AT RISK Most likely to develop Heat Stroke are: -Infants - Elderly - Athletes - Outdoor workers or those involved in outdoor recreation - Animals or children left in cars Heat Stroke is basically a body in Hyperthermia with an elevated temperature of 40 degrees C (104 degrees F ) or higher, accompanied by dehydration. The human body is designed to operate within a rather narrow temperature range. Several degrees below or above this normal range can have a drastic effect. When the body can no longer cool itself to remain in this range it will go into a condition known as Heat Exhaustion. You can recognize Heat Exhaustion by observing the following symptoms in a person exposed to high temperatures: - Fatigue -Weakness -Headache -Muscle cramps and aches -Dizziness -Nausea -Vomiting As with any condition, the best course is prevention. The best way to prevent the onset of Heat Stroke is to get this person to cool down, rest and re-hydrate themselves. If not, the development of Heat Stroke can be sudden and severe. It is often proceeded by the following additional symptoms: - Confusion - Agitation -Disorientation - Rapid pulse - Absence of sweating - Seizure - Coma TREATMENT If you observe these symptoms in someone you are with, what should you do? First thing is to call emergency services to summon professional help. Explain the situation so the responders will be aware of what to prepare for. Then you should: - Get the victim into the shade - Remove any excessive clothing - Fan them to cool their body - Spray them with cool or tepid water - Place ice packs under the armpits or on the groin - If they are able, get them to drink liquids As I stated earlier in the article, prevention is always the best course of action. There are several things that can help stop the problem from starting. Drinking lots of water but avoiding alcohol and caffeine is a good start. Replacing the electrolytes lost during activity by consuming a good quality sports drink can help. And dressing properly for activities with light colored, loose fitting, lightweight clothing is essential. Don’t forget to protect your head with a hat if possible. Be sure to never leave yourself, children or pets in a parked car. The temperature inside a vehicle without the A/C running will quickly rise into the danger zone. Even with windows partially rolled down, a vehicle can become hazardous. More than a few fatalities have occurred when children or pets have accidentally hit the off button switching the Air Conditioning inside a running vehicle into shut down mode. Enjoy your tropical vacation and activities back home during the warm season by using a little common sense and following these tips to keep you and your family and friends safe

Thai Warriors! 38

www.krabi-magazine.com

Muay Thai Fighters are at the heart of the Thai nation. They can be seen everywhere throughout the kingdom, on the channels of the TV, on posters across the land - these warriors are revered throughout the kingdom. Trained from a young age, these boys are battle hardened well before they reach puberty. February | 2016

Thai Warriors!

There are many traditions in the training of the young fighters to become warriors, and one of the most well known is that ancient practice of kicking banana trees. These young warriors once were trained to increase the size of their tibia and fibula by causing micro fractures in the bones which would later calcify and actually grow in diameter. Once this process has been practiced for years, the fighters’ kicks are stronger and more destructive. In ancient times, fighters were instructed to kick banana tree trunks. In modern times, fighters use regular punching bags (which sometimes can be more dense than banana trees). Sitting on the edge of the ring watching two warriors throw punches, kicks, elbows and knees at one another, one can’t help but have enormous respect as is unlike any other martial art. Sweat and blood erupt from the melee as punches hit their marks and knees connect with unprotected ribs. From the edge of the ring you will notice a focus and dedication in the fighters, they seem to see nothing but each other, the roar of the crowd, the bright lights shining down on the ring, the announcements on the fight cutting through the air - nothing matters to these warriors other than each other. The experience of a real Muay Thai fight at the Ao Nang Stadium is unlike anything you have ever seen. Inside the well-trodden arena there are plenty of seats to take in the action, as well as an area of comfortable sofas that surround the immediate perimeter of the ring for the ultimate view. Order a beer from the vending booth, take a seat ringside and kick off your shoes and get ready for one of the most exciting nights of your life! The Ao Nang Krabi Stadium can house a maximum of 2,000 visitors at any single fight, but usually spectator numbers are limited to only 100-200 so there is plenty of space to move around and see the fight from the perfect vantage point. Fights are weekly on Monday and Friday nights and start at 9pm. A typical fight night will feature 9 separate fights which start from the younger (8-10 year old kids) fighters and end with the older fighters. To order tickets you can book directly at your hotel reception, at the stadium or by calling the stadium directly at: 081- 606 - 2888

RAILAY MINI GUIDE. Railway, a short longtail ride from Ao Nang beach yet it’s not an island… Thats right Railway Bay is a peninsula, which is protected on 4 sides, 3 of them being the ocean and the fourth side is well jagged yet beautiful limestone karsts. So the only way there is to take a longtail boat from Ao Nang (or An Nam Mao). Railay is a great place to come for the day as it is only a short 10 minutes longtail boat ride from downtown Ao Nang and offers numerous activities to keep busy with. There is the viewpoint, only a short 30 minute hike and provides you with a birds eye view of Railway Bay. The phallac cave, “fertility cave” some and see over 500 wooden carved shlongs, some will fit in your ear, others will be taller than you. Try to fingers on the rocks with some climbing, Railay is world famous for being one of the best spots to rock climb in, who not see what all the fuss is about. Deep water solo, cruise on a longtail boat around the peninsula, dive into the turquoise waters and then climb up 20 meters up an impressive limestone wall, look down and hurl yourself from the top. or just sit on the beach and take in a great vantage point to water the unset. Everyone’s going places, where are you going?

[ TOUCH THE ART ] Photos and words by. Alena Nazarova

If you have ever been to Thailand, you have most certainly noticed numerous galleries peddling a number of oil paintings, they all have one theme running throughout, most of their work is incredibly original. I found a truly hidden gem in Krabi, I want to tell you about a special gallery located just outside the downtown busy streets of Ao Nang on Nopparat Thara Beach.

T

wo friends - Ying and Chan - opened their own gallery in order to present their personal work for people to admire as they browse the beachfront area.

In addition to the vast number of unique paintings, Ying and Chan also offer lessons for children and adults alike, so you too can learn how to make these works of art. Ying and Chan offer a crash course which runs for only one or two days, or for the visitor who has more time to dedicate their education and artistic growth a more intense course of twelve days is offered. All across Thailand locally made paintings are becoming increasingly popular among Singaporean and Malaysian visitors, with the

46

various styles of Thai paintings being displayed in homes, spas, restaurants and hotels throughout South East Asia. This is great that the work from our creative and interesting Thai artists is getting out into other countries, but the work from Ying and Chan is truly something different. For example, watercolor painting is commonly used as a medium for painting at All Art, typically all other art shops use only oil paintings. Ying and Chan have extensive teaching experience working with Thai children and from this experience and love of working with the kids, Ying and Chan have both decided to try their best to begin working with foreigner and tourist children alike. So far they have done a wonderful job accommodating their classes and equipment for the new “young group of tourists. So whether it be alone, with a loved one or with your whole family, painting can be a wonderful way to spend your time.

A TOUGH CLIMB, A MASIVE SWING, A THRILLING SCREAM, A FEELING LIKE NO OTHER

HOLLOW MOUNTAIN 52

So go the feelings that wash over those daring to push themselves for a jolt of adrenaline at Hollow mountain. The fun, the shock, the relief - it’s all there. Hand built by two friends - one a veteran rock climber one a passionate adventurer - the process to build this amazing park took just over four years. January 2016 Hollow mountain was officially opened and has now taken shape as the most extreme adventure park of Krabi, (if not Thailand!). www.krabi-magazine.com

Located only a short 10 minute drive from Ao Nang and Krabi Town, this adventure park is fast becoming one of the must-do activities in Krabi. Take your pick of any of the extreme adventures to be had, from the smaller “junior swing” (it really gives a new meaning to the word “junior”), or climb your way 80 meters vertically on a via ferata (a steel ladder drilled right into the rock face) to the top of an immense karst and enjoy an amazing panoramic view of the rocks and landscape below. Or do you dare to try the emperor swing? Take the plunge 100 meters with nothing but a double safety line to swing you though the air at blistering speeds. It’s all at Hollow mountain. Oh wait we almost forgot the 200 meter ”Terminator” zip line which takes you from platform to platform at over 40 kilometers per hour with your feet dangling 60 meters above the primary jungle below. This zipline is almost certainly unlike any zipline you’ve done before, as like everything else at Hollow mountain it is designed to terrify you to the max. Instead of gently decelerating like other ziplines, this one accelerates towards a rock face until the very last second, when the brakes kick in and bring you to a surprisingly gentle stop. The climb up to the “base camp” area is about a 30 minute walk through the jungle, which also provides for some wonderful viewpoints and areas to take photos. Once at basecamp the owners and guides give a great rundown of how things will progress and safety considerations, then it’s off to the climb, strap up lock in and hang on - you’re on your way up. February | 2016

53

The team at Hollow Mountain makes safety a number one priority and given the nature of the activity it is comforting knowing that basically everything is doubled for safety. Double harness straps, double safety lines, double jump lines and so on and so on. All of these lines are checked prior to every jump day by the management personally, so you can rest assured the equipment is in top notch working order. Our favorite activity at Hollow mountain was by far the emperor swing. Standing on the edge of the jump platform really makes you see into yourself, can I do it you ask yourself? Your feet just on the edge of the platform, on the ground a number of onlookers gaze up at you waiting to catch a video of your imminent jump. You take one look forward, a deep breath, close your eyes and step out into the air. 2 seconds of free fall follow then a soft tightening of the swing line and then the favorite; an elongated slingshot effect where you are rocketed out over massive trees to gain an absolutely stunning panoramic view. Afterwards you swing backwards underneath the archway and back again slowly losing momentum until you are lowered to the forest floor. The feeling of total weightlessness is breathtaking, the knowledge that you just did something few in world ever have done is amazing, the feeling of soft ground underfoot afterwards seems slightly alien. Don’t let us have the last word, do it yourself and write us about your experience info@krabi-magazine.com and tell us what you think! It’s all about the fun of it all, the fun of getting away from cars, motorbikes, roads and buildings and just getting out in the jungle for some real fun. This is a fantastic activity for those who wish to feel their heart under their chest, for those who wish to push themselves, for those who want to come home with an amazing photo and story to tell. We strongly recommend this activity.

In Canada a number of their shows were at times upwards of over 20,000 people. The intimacy The Centara Anda Dhevi offers combined with the weather in Krabi sold the location for the duo, and now Steve and Nancy will call Krabi their home for the next five months. Music is as much a way of showcasing ones inner feelings as it is a way to connect with others. After listening and seeing the duo play a few sets their love of music mixed with their love of life truly comes out. THE SUNSET ISLAND

Koh Lanta consists of two islands, Koh Lanta Noi and Koh Lanta Yai. Koh Lanta Noi is the smaller of the two and does not have tourist facilities. Visitors travelling by road from the mainland pass through the smaller island on the way to Koh Lanta Yai - the center of it all.

B

an Sala Dan village on the north side of the island is Lanta Yai’s commercial center and the pier where visitors arrive on the island. It is a row of shops, seafood restaurants on stilts, dive shops, tour operators, banks and guest houses that cater for newcomers on the island.

Lanta for relaxing in natural surroundings.

The bulk of the Lanta beaches lie along the west coast - hence it’s often referred to name as ‘The Sunset Island’-and can all be reached by road: Khao Kwang, Khlong Dao and Phra Ae all have long stretches of white sand facing the Andaman sea, while Khlong Khong, Khlong Nin and Ba Kan Tiang and other smaller bays take in more dramatic views and less crowded for swimming.

Once called Ban Si Raya, Old Town was historically a commercial port for Chinese and Arabic trading boats that sailed between the ports of Phuket, Penang and Singapore. Today it is a village with a few rows of stilted shop houses and home to an ancient community that was established on the island long ago.

Ba Kantiang Bay has spectacular crystal– clear seawater, soft white sand, romantic sunsets in utmost privacy. It’s the picture of a postcard, symbolizing a luxe hideaway in

Known as Ban San Kau, this sea gypsy’s settlement is based on south-east Lanta Yai. It is there that an old clan of traditional Chao Ley try to preserve a disappearing way of life in this fast-developing island.

It’s a picturesque place dating back 100 years, from the old days of sea trading. Near the shacks along the coast, local fishermen still dock their longtail boats and make for an authentic snapshot of local life. www.krabi-magazine.com

UNPLUG IN KOH JUM

Geography brought electricity to Koh Jum late in 2009 as the island was in the direct path of the new underwater electric cable connecting Koh Phi Phi to the mainland. So now that Koh Jum is plugged-in, has it lost its reputable character that has attracted intrepid travelers over the past couple of decades? We are pleased to report that Koh Jum is still as tranquil and laid back as it always has been. In fact, what is most noticeable are the lack of noisy generators at most of the islands resorts. Folks come to Koh Jum to tune out; the island’s nature and culture dominate the minimal tourist infrastructure. The existing resorts on Koh Jum all have their own family-run character, ranging from the backpackers paradise to luxurious beach villas. Koh Pu Mountain is the dominant geological feature on the island at over 400 meters. It’s a great hike for the adventurous and a vital refuge of native habitat still harboring Asian Pied Hornbills and Burmese pythons. The three villages; Koh Pu, Ting Rai and Koh Jum are situated on the back side of the island, amongst the mangroves while the resorts are located opposite, facing the open Andaman Sea. This division allows the villagers to remain authentic without a significant tourist infrastructure while the resorts are all located on the beaches. Koh Jum is predominately a large Muslim populated sub-district of Krabi, home to over 1,500 inhabitants. The locals of these villages

70

engage mostly in fishing, rubber cultivation and the local crafts of cloth weaving and painting or ‘batik’ as it is known as here. While the north is mountainous, the south is comprised of dense jungle, cashew nut trees, rubber plantations, casuarinas and nipapalms. Since all the resorts face West, there are epic sunsets to be had all along the island. The renowned Koh Jum Lodge is an excellent place to stay for a few days, and has superb views to boot. Access to the island is by longtail taxi boats which leave from the mainland at the port town of Laem Kruat. There is now a songthaew you can take direct from Krabi Town to Laem Kruat. During the high season most visitors come to Koh Jum using the Krabi-Koh Lanta ferry which stops at two locations on Koh Jum, both of which are offshore so local longtail boats will come from the island to pick up passengers.

The lack of any deep ports on the island keep the ferry boats out at sea and almost prevent large masses of tourists from overcrowding the island. Getting here is an adventure and this ends up defining the interesting community of resorts and visitors that have made this island their home and the place they return to year after year. Getting to Koh Jum can be very simple or a bit of a nightmare, it all depends on how much you know about it. This is where Krabi magazine can help, we recently took the trip to Koh Jum ourselves and have decided to share the adventure with all of our readers. There are 2 ways to get to Koh Jum by passing ferry or longtail boat. There are ferries that leave from Koh Lanta at www.krabi-magazine.com

8am and from Krabi at 11am, both ferries stop as they pass alongside Koh Jum and signal to longtail boats to come and pick up visitors to land ashore Koh Jum. Koh Phi Phi also has ferries which leave at 2pm and operate on the same principle as above. The second way to get to Koh Jum is to go to the port town of Laem Kruat, from where you can catch a longtail boat directly to Koh Jum- this was our favorite of the 2 methods of travel. If you are driving, it takes about 1 hour to get from Ao Nang to Laem Kruat. You just head to Tesco Lotus and then continue until you see the large overhead signs which tell you to turn right for “Koh Jam”. This road will lead to the small locality of Laem Kruat, where you will find a large pier with boats going to Koh Jum. If you don’t have transport of your own, you can always catch a blue and yellow “songthaew” - the local buses that have benches in the back. On the side of the “songthaew” will be written – Krabi, Bus Station, Tesco, Big C, Laem Kruat, they are frequent and easy to spot.

>

February | 2016

These buses will leave from all of these locations at intervals throughout the day and will take you directly to the Laem Kruat pier. Now, the pier is a bit misleading. We waited at the end of the pier before realizing the longtail taxis were passing us by and docking at the mainland. Then we went back and followed our noses along past the shops until we saw a slipway with goods and people being unloaded. It was the second slipway we needed to get to “Moo Too”, the place on Koh Jum we were being collected from. If you know the name of the pier on Koh Jum you need to get to, just ask anyone in this area and they will direct you to the correct boat. We got on and soon were chugging along through the mangroves with a boat full of happy local Muslim women that looked as they hadn’t changed a bit since 1925. We arrived at Koh Jum just 45 minutes later, paid our 70thb fare and were taken by “taxi” (a battered old pickup truck) through the winding dirt track until we reached our destination resort. Give it a go and you will see a different side of Thailand from years gone by.

Well worth the experience.

By the time you’re ready to view, we’ll only be showing you properties we know you’ll want to buy. It’s all part of the Exotiq service and something we’re proud of. Working hard so you don’t have to.
