The glass is half full,

So to it begins the season of rain and. lush vegetation. But it’s not all gloomy and dreary times, Krabi in these months offers a lot of things to see and do as opposed to the busier December and January months, and at a more affordable rate. For one thing the rain can be a little difficult to deal with, but on the other hand if you are prepared for it (i.e. carry a rain poncho with you and/or an umbrella) it’s not that bad and with the rain comes a refreshing wash over the province. A photography tip; the rainy season offers some great chances to catch great photos as the dust haze is smothered by the rain. Also prices during this season the prices are much more reasonable, you will not find lines at restaurants, the bars are not full and you can easily take a seat anywhere you want to. Enjoy Krabi and all it has to offer, and take a minute to appreciate a refreshing douse from the skies Thank you for reading!

WINDOW

KOH PODA This is the iconic island of Krabi and the first and most dramatic one you can see from Ao Nang beach. Hop on a longtail boat - the local wooden boats with their picturesque prow - and sail away surrounded by turquoise water..

AO NANG BEACH At 20 km from Krabi Town Ao Nang Beach is the most developed of Krabi’s many beaches. Ao Nang Beach is famous for it’s white sand beaches and large limestones karsts towering over the eastern edges. All of your accommodation, shopping and service needs can be found here. It is the hub from which to plan your trip to sea as well as to any number of the nearby islands. NOPPHARAT THARA BEACH Just around the corner from Ao Nang, yet still undeveloped with only a few resorts, bars and restaurants, Noppharat Thara beach offers a bit more “local” feel than it’s sister Ao Nang. Attractive because of its natural setting, this is where local youngsters and families gather during sunset and on weekends. At low tide, walk out together with millions of small crabs on the sandy pathways to a small island on the western edge of the beach. KLONG MUANG BEACH A further 20 km away from Ao Nang Klong Muang is the up-market side of Krabi, the place to be if you are after a peaceful and hassle free holiday. Catering to families and couples, it is here that you really get that well deserved repose, surrounded by pristine nature. KOH LANTA BEACHES Koh Lanta has a wide selection of resorts for all tastes and pockets. Koh Lanta Yai island has long stretches of gleaming white sandy beaches and shallow emerald waters. Lined with tropical vegetation, a private spot is never more than a short walk away..

CHICKEN ISLAND This should be next on your list as it is right next to Koh Poda. From the right angle when passing Chicken Island (Koh Gai) you can catch a glimpse of a chicken’s neck and head, some would argue more like that of a turkey but it’s up to you. The second island, Koh Tub, is connected to Chicken Island by a sandy isthmus and people can walk from one to another at low tide.

clear waters, pure sandy beaches, lush mountains and rocky islands emerging from the sea. Both beaches are known all over the world for their famous climbing routes. They can only be reached by boat, a 15 minute ride from Ao Nang or 30 minutes from Krabi Town. Enjoy a cocktail in one of the beach bars, visit the Phranang Cave, challenge yourself on a rock climbing or ‘deep water solo’ cliff jumping into the sea, hike the limestone trail to a lagoon or the viewpoint or simply chill out and watch the day pass you by.

TUBKAEK BEACH Next to Klong Muang Beach, Tub Keak beach is another place to just get away; long, clean and powerful, the area boasts breathtaking views over the Koh Hong archipelago and provides for wonderfully charming sunsets. From Tubkeak beach you can venture inside the National Park and try the nature trail “Naga trek” to one of the most spectacular viewpoints in Krabi. RAILAY AND TONSAI BEACHES Are split and separated from Ao Nang by a limestone mountain range. Railay has two sides, east and west, and its settings are simply marvelous: crystal

ON KRABI

KOH HONG This island archipelago demands everyone’s attention as it is one of the highlights of Krabi Province. The Archipelago, a group of limestone islands with many hidden caves and lagoons makes it perfect for snorkeling and exploring. Visit Lading and Pakbia islands before Koh Hong as they are much less visited and sport a blend of both lush jungle and tropical waters. Koh hong is usually crowded until 3pm so we recommend visiting other Lading and Pakbia in the morning, then going to Koh Hong after the crowds have started to leave.

end of the province known for its prime sunset views, heaps of activities and glimpses into sea gypsy life. Koh Lanta is also a National Park that comprises many local islands surrounded by coral reefs, such as Koh Ngai, Koh Mook and the remote Koh Rok. LIMESTONE MOUNTAINS These iconic karsts characterize most of the inland area of Krabi, the most spectacular being the crags of Sai Tai, in between Ao Nang and Krabitown. Susaan Hoi is a 40 million yearold seashell cemetery; once a large swamp where freshwater crustaceans proliferated, today it’s home to 40 centimeter thick, shell encrusted limestone slabs, a geologically rather unique and is only 5Km from Ao Nang beach.

KOH PHI PHI

Private bays, limestone cliffs, waters rich in marine life and caves where swallow’s birds nests are harvested are all here on the island that Leonardo Di Caprio once rolled his hot bod in while filming ‘The Beach’ at the now iconic Maya Bay. KOH JUM & KOH SIBOYA Both are unspoiled tropical hide-aways that have a unique atmosphere. Tune in to the slow culture here, imbibe the peace and recharge your batteries with the soundtrack of lapping waves. KOH LANTA The developing island at the southern

KHAO PHANOM BENCHA NATIONAL PARK At 20 km from Krabi Town, the Khao Phanom Bencha national park comprises waterfalls, streams, lush forests and caves. It is home to all kind of flora and wildlife and to the highest mountain in the region from which it takes it’s name. One of the features of the park is Huay Thoi Waterfall where water runs down onto several huge pools. TARNBOK KHORANEE NATIONAL PARK Located in the north of the province, Tarnbok Khoranee national park is made up of limestone mountains, verdant tropical forest, caves and beautiful islands. It is well known kayaking explorers as there are a number of tributaries curving into a number of small caves boasting ancient cave paintings. SA MORAKOT OR THE EMERALD POOL Truly a natural wonder of Krabi: a pond of turquoise water with an average temperature of 30-40°C fed by a hot spring in the middle of the jungle in Klong Thom district, 70 kilometers from Ao Nang. HOT SPRINGS Situated in Klong Thom district, These natural hot springs are natures jacuzzis. They melt away tensions, relieve the body and mind with the fresh spring water running over mineral enriched limestone rocks.

Soul food....

Love your food and let your food love you... The world rotates around food. Whether we will admit it or not much of the time we spend in our life is rallied around food. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, holidays, merry making, social gatherings, physical health, emotional comfort, travelling, snack time, energy reboot. You name it and we can place food in the equation somewhere. But how are we relating to our food? Do we find ourselves eating to live or living to eat?

20

www.krabi-magazine.com

M

ore and more people today have found themselves bound by varying degrees to food addiction. Some more controlling than others and some more self destructive than others. Never the less food addictions can wreack havoc on ones life and the lives of those surrounding this individual. These people find themselves locked within themselves emotionally and feeling held prisoner to a body that is showing physical signs that there is a problem that goes far deeper than the skin they're in. Food addiction reveals itself in my forms. From the outside looking in most people feel that people who are overweight, lack life luster or physical fitness, assume that they are simply over eaters. There may be some truth to this but there's a deeper back story. People are becoming more and more educated about proper foods available today. But for many decades most have just been eating and living on what their societies provide and promote. In a day and age of fast food, refined and processed food it's no wonder that there are hundreds of thousands suffering from food addiction; both physically and psychologically.

June | 2017

Today we are having to discover or rediscover that it is okay and even important to have a relationship with our food, yes a relationship with food. When you hear the coined phrase soul food it is a warranted one. For centuries food preparation would happen by individuals gathering in a place together where they would swap stories with one another, laugh, cry and share in the intimacies of life with one another. All the while they were preparing the meal of the day. Many people spent time hunting and gathering the foods that they would prepare so there was thanksgiving involved and they put their heart and soul, yes soul into the food that they were fortunate enough to have to eat. Today, most aren't aware of where their foods are even coming from. They don't understand the painstaking process of what took place before eventually passing through their pallet. The joy of preparing a meal does wonders to your emotions if you understand the process and the benefits of the foods you are endulging in. I want to give you some slack if you are that person who says, "I just cannot seem to break the habit of eating certain foods that I know are bad for me". You're right! Many processed foods today are designed and engineered to do

just that; create a habit and addiction. They are designed to raise the 'feel good' sensation you have when eating them. This creates an addictive habitual routine of always wanting to go back to those certain refined and processed foods. However, these addictive habits can be broken and here's how. Take a look below at how you can finally learn to love the foods you eat and feel the love from them in return.

What is food anyway? Ask yourself the question, "what am I eating"? Discover what foods provide your body proper building materials for health and eat more of them. On the same note discover food that does harm to the body and eat less of them.

21

Allow yourself one week of sugar free processed food. WHAT? What I mean is this; only consume sugar from natural sources and not artificial ones. Sugar from honey, dates, figs, fruits, etc. This suggestion is directed towards processed sugars and not other processed ingredients. Let's take it one step at a time. Keep a journal. Begin writing about the food you are eating and how you feel about it. Imagine having a conversation with a carrot or apple; what would you be saying. Too, what would you be talking about with a slice of cheesecake or a greasy hamburger. Be honest with yourself and disclose in your journal how you look and relate to food.

Give yourself a break. If you begin to understand and accept that there are times that you are not going to eat like a super health nut. When you don't the guilt and shame is less consumng. Your emotions won't be as easily triggered into going deeper down the rabbits hole of harmful selfindulgence. The truth will set you free. Now you know that food effects your body and your emotions. When you cooperate with your mind and body concerning the food you eat you will be able to make better decisions about your food choices. Not all of the decisions you make are only based on emotion some of them simply are chemical compounds within the body crying out to be saciated. Go crazy! Now this might seem crazy but start talking to your food. I make it a habit of giving thanks for my food. If it is food that I know is great for my body I will look at it and say, "Thanks for taking good care of me" or "I'm celebrating you today" and them gobble, gobble, gobble. Down the hatch it goes. Put out that butt

Cigarette’s something we’re all used to seeing for generations now, something we all accept, but most of us know of their danger yet many still engage in the activity of smoking. In Krabi (and Thailand as a whole) the tobacco industry has been growing for decades, this growth has greatly increased by the ease of access to them throughout the country as well as their price which although has been increasing steadily over the years is still very cheap as for as global standards are concerned. Single cigarettes have been sold commonly throughout the country and these make it easy for people to buy only 1 or 2 cigarettes at a time and also make it easier for kids with only a little money to buy cigarettes and get hooked earlier. This practice is now illegal across the kingdom. Local convenience shops across the country who formerly sold single cigarettes have now given up the practice and are only selling more expensive per pack cigarettes. This is a step in the right directly for the kingdom of Thailand to reduce cigarette smoking throughout the kingdom.

Mai or ‘old wooden house’ as it’s known in Thai has become the household name for a fantastic local restaurant here in Krabi. Allow us to reveal the secret recipe to this amazing establishment.

June | 2017

27

Over 25 year ago, before Krabi was a tourist destination, Ruen Mai’s owner Khun Liang was not concerned with opening a restaurant that catered towards a foreign palette. He wanted to capture the pure essence of what the traditional flavors are for Southern Thai cuisine and offer these dishes at an affordable price. He wanted to couple this with an ambiance that made patrons feel at home. Now, a staple in the Krabi community, Ruen Mai has, over the past 25 years, moved three times to and from various locations throughout Krabi Town. Ruen Mai has now found a new home in the suburbs of Krabitown. Quiet, peaceful and homey is the theme of Ruen Mai in it’s new home on Sai Thai. It is a tranquil haven of comfort. The current restaurant was designed and built by a renowned architect and builder who also happens to be a Krabi local wishing to remain anonymous. His work is one of the key components that gives Ruen Mai it’s delightful local feel. The primary building material used in the construction of Ruen Mai is bamboo sourced from all over Thailand but only specific pieces were used in the construction of the building. The restaurant roof resembles a large straw hat that sits atop a hardwood floor, comfortably spotted with dinner tables. The whole structure is extended over a maze of canals and ponds, which are home to a variety of tilapia, catfish and other local fish. The menu is full of sumptuous dishes, from the burned eggplant in coconut soup (a favorite for vegetarians) to the sautéed shrimp in tamarind sauce (our personal favorite), but don’t feel limited by these dishes, as every dish is delicious and amazing at Ruen Mai. If you’re interested in trying truly authentic Southern Thai cuisine in an ambiance that will soothe your heart, take the short trip out to Sai Thai, on the way to Krabi Town. It’s only about a 10-minute drive from Ao Nang center. Because this treasure of a restaurant is so popular, reservations are often recommended. To make a reservation please call 089-288-3232

DIVE IN

Krabi’s coastline spreads over 300 kilometers, making it a great place to find new beaches and get wet while exploring the underwater paradise that surrounds us. If you prefer to go a little deeper and stay longer, you can try SCUBA diving. The entire bay area is quite shallow with most diving locations less than 30 meters in depth. The life underwater is rich and incredibly diverse, with hundreds of different fish, corals and mammals to discover. There are blacktop reef sharks, leopard sharks, numerous parrot fish, pipe fish, nudibranchs and of course the friendly clown fish (or more commonly known as nemo fish).

The underwater world is rich in life, but it is up to us to help preserve it for future generations, so please be considerate with your trash whether you are on a boat or on a beach and always look for a trash bin to dispose of your waste. Thank you!

TIDE TABLES KRABI

Over 150 islands dot the coastline, offering a plethora of safe havens for fish and coral to live and grow. A number of these islands are only rock outcroppings without any beaches, making them ominous and stunning to look at and great for snorkeling and to experience the amazing underwater life. There are many soft and hard corals that grow underwater and provide small cracks and crevices for fish and small crustaceans to hide in. If you have the breath in you and have the desire, you can head out on a snorkeling expedition and dive in to see what you can find!

The Hostel Explosion:

38

www.krabi-magazine.com

T h e N e w Wa y o f T r a v e l i n g

Just as recently as 2010 nobody had really heard of hostels in Thailand. Hostels have been a key and vital part of travel in Europe for several decades in some form or other and the market had become very developed. When Pak Up Hostel decided to turn the old Krabi school into a 100 bed backpackers hostel, people looked on in disbelief, thinking ‘why would anyone pay 250THB for a ONE BED surrounded by strangers and even sharing toilets and shower cubicles?’

June | 2017

39

6

years on and the advantages of hostels have now become strikingly clear: social cohesion. Backpackers are all looking to develop friendships and meet new people while partying hard and adventuring even harder. That is what the modern hostel is expected to offer. Forget dingy private rooms with no air con and dirty sheets. Enter the hostel scene. When Pak Up Hostel first opened it’s doors on 3 November 2010, customers would enter the building and look on in disdain as we tried to charge a whole 150THB for one bed in a room of 10 people. Move on 6 years and we now have a multitude of unique and interesting hostels all vying for the young and fun backpacker. For good reason too. Beforehand, one would be forced to search widely for interaction. Nowadays, just head down to the hostel bar where activities galore await you and guaranteed friendships will follow. Everything is set up to facilitate social interactions. It makes traveling less

intimidating for the uninitiated and hostel staff are often highly trained entertainers skilled in the art of mixing people up from all nationalities. This does not however, as critics like to suggest, take anything away from the authentic traveling experience. Fantastic tours are offered at reasonable prices taking backpackers to places only the most adventurous would have found. With the increase in competition comes an increase in quality of genuinely authentic and quality experiences. To survive as a hostel these days, one must cater to the increasingly savvy backpacker who will see right through a scam or low quality experience. This can only be a good thing and it is captivating to witness the rapid advances made notably in South East Asia. Bangkok for one offers the best choice and quality of hostels in the world. Some places can hardly be described as hostels as they see to resemble more like 4 star resorts, albeit often at a social cost. The heart of hostels should always focus on social and not aesthetics although both can be attained with the ever increasing number of entrepreneurial individuals opening new hostels everywhere in South East Asia. The emphasis is on them to provide exactly what the customer wants, when they want it and at what cost they are willing to pay. What could possibly be bad about that? Long live the Hostel, for the Hostel is far from dead.

sicily By. Derek Jeelander

This not-so-small island in the Mediterranean lays in-between Tunisia and Italy and has had a varied and remarkable history through the ages. Sicily has earned our pick of the season for places to visit (after Krabi that is of course).

42

www.krabi-magazine.com

From the people, the landscape, the history, the beaches and most of all the food, Sicily has a special energy about it and should not be overlooked on your vacation wish list.

43

S

icily, the largest island in the Mediterranean has led an interesting and varied life over the past millennia. With archeological evidence dating back to the 12th century B.C.E., it is one of the older settled areas in the region. Although there has been evidence of civilizations existing in Sicily as far back as the 13th century B.C.E., the vast majority of archeological evidence didn’t spring up until around 1200-1100 B.C.E. when settlements of the Phoenician’s were uncovered. The Phoenicians enjoyed roughly 300 years of rule over the Western ares of Sicily, occupying the fishing grounds off the coasts as well as setting up the salt mines - which are still in operation today. It wasn’t until later in the 8th century B.C.E. when the Greeks began setting up colonies of their own all around the island. Arriving some 300 years after the Phonecians, the Greeks had the disadvantage of territorial occupation. This made no difference in history, for what the Greeks lacked in time, they made up for in blood. Many of the Phoenician settlements were found to be slaughtered or simply ‘bred-out’ by new Greek inhabitants. Later the Greek settlements grew to large cities, the most notable was Syracuse in the South East. They enjoyed relative dominance over the island for some 400 years until the Northern African empire of Carthage came into conflict. Soon after the first and second Sicilian wars between the Greeks and the Carthaginians, the Romans attacked the islands now weakened armies and overtook Sicily in 242 B.C.E. and remained in control until the fall of the Roman empire around 450.

44

After the fall of the Roman empire Sicily changed hands numerous times, it passed from the Roman empire to the Vandals (present day Germany) to the Byzintines, to the Arabs, then the Normans (vikings), the Spanish, the Bourbons, back to the Germans and now under the rule of Italy. The island has had a varied history to say the least, it goes to show the vast range of people who currently live in Sicily, what they look like, what they eat and who they are. For example Sicily’s prime traditional dish; fish with Cous Cous is actually of middle eastern descent. The main government building in Palermo is called the Norman house, and numerous ancient temples and ruins of Greek origin can be seen throughout the countryside. These are the remnants of past rulers over the island and show how the islands current state has been shaped during these periods of rule.

We visited the island recently and wanted to highlight some of the must see spots while visiting. First and foremost I’d like to say this is no small island, with 25,711Sq. Kilometers, covered in rolling hills and home to Europes largest active volcano, Sicily is a place where you and get lost and find yourself overwhelmed at the sheer amount of places to visit and things to do. The capital city of the island, Palermo, is nestled www.krabi-magazine.com

in the islands’ north west region and is home to about 1,500,000 inhabitants. It features the Palermo cathedral which is the largest Christian church on the island and lays on top of 9,000 catacombs. Just to the West of Palermo, is a small town of Trapani. Founded some 2,000 years ago, this town became well known for it’s salt mines which are still in use today where fresh sea salt can be bought. Looking for some medieval mountain top castles boasting 360 degrees of panoramic views? Well, just outside Trapani is the famous Erice (Pronounced Edishe). The original timing of the towns inception is not clear, it is thought to have been built sometime better the 7th and 5th centuries B.C.E. under Greek rule. The town can be accessed by driving or by funicular cable car between Trapani and Erice. Either way it takes about 10-15 minutes to reach the top. The city sits on top of a large mountain overlooking the town of Trapani at about 751 meters in elevation. Get lost on the intricately designed cobblestone

walking streets which was make up the majority of the city. Just make sure you bring good walking shoes as you’ll do plenty while exploring Erice. Fancy stunning rich blue Mediterranean waters? There are 2 must visit spots for your fix. San Vito Lo Copo. Highly regarded as Italy’s best beach, San Vito is loved by locals and tourists alike as the water is crystal clear and not terribly deep so it’s great for kids as well. There are towering mountain just to the Northern side of the beach offering a certain dwarfing sensation over the area. If you visit this beach, don’t forget to try the Fredo Caldo. June | 2017

45

Zingaro Nature Reserve.

Volcano anyone?

Just South of the San Vito Lo Copo beach town a truly amazing nature reserve boasting som of the most spectacular scenery the island offers. Stretching 8 kilometers along the northern coastline, the Zingero Nature Reserve is home to many small beaches, museums (maintained by the reserve) all of which are connected together by a walking path stretching from one end of the nature reserve to the other. It’s not a difficult way but probably not the easiest for children under 4 years old. Although, you can just take your kids on a part of the walk and not the whole length of the reserve. Walking on the path you will step on well work limestone so worn and have short arm palms brush your face, hold onto locally made tree railings and get the chance to look over the coastline and gaze out at boats carousing the coastline and exploring the various inlets which dot the region.

Mt. Etna is Europe’s largest active volcano in Europe standing at an impressive 3,350 meters, which rockets up towards the sky, towering over the few smaller mountains which call Sicily home. It’s an active volcano meaning it can technically erupt any minute, in fact nearly every day it’s got an active plume extending over the landscape and up into the clouds, making it a stunning place to take photos of.

46

Onto the ruins. Although there are a few places worth visiting (Segesta, Selinunte and Agrigento) if you want to catch a glimpse into the past, we had the best time in Agrigento, which is in the middle of the southern edge of the island. It’s home to some of the largest and most intact temples on the island. Most worth a visit to the ‘Valley of the temples’ apply named as it was home to over 10 temples in it’s time of greatness, still today remnants of many of these temples can be seen. 2 of the largest temples are still over 60% intact.

That’s not all Etna has to offer though, the top of the mountain also receives an annual 6 meters of snowfall, making skiing a possibility on this hot island. Imaging skiing on a volcano, while looking out at the mediterranean ocean and maybe having the chance of seeing hot lava from the chair lift as well, sounds too good to be true? Well it’s not and thats why we feel it should be considered on your next vacation plan. www.krabi-magazine.com

Last month saw Ao Nang’s annual Bike Week extravaganza come and go with chrome, loud pipes and plenty of beer and partying. 48

WEEK C O M E .

The Ao Nang Bike week has become somewhat of a tradition in our little beach town, drawing in crowds from all over the province and far beyond. In fact a good number of visitors come from Trang, Phuket, Koh Samui, Nikkon si Thammarat and many more far off destinations. This goes to show the dedication and love these riders have for the events they partake in. While these events can draw in some unwanted bad apples, for the most part the attendees are great, upstanding and honest individuals who are only looking for likeminded people to share a beer with and talk some gear head shop.

June | 2017

49

First established in America, the birthplace of the chopper, these bike weeks have taken the planet by storm. Some of the larger global events draw in crowds of well over 200,000 riders. From Sturgis and Daytona, to Lake Faak in Germany and Singapore, Harley Davidson events and rallies draw people from all over the planet and from a range of demographics. Asia has been a hotspot for growth of the Harley Davidson brand as well as other iconic names such as Honda and Yamaha creating chopper style bikes. The region has been experienced an economic boom for the past 2 decades making the bikes easier to buy for people from nearly all Asian countries. There is also a certain desire for Western culture permeating the Asian mentality, that being said a great symbol of the West are iconic chopper motorcycles. Therefore one can only see how these events have been springing up all across Asia. Ao Nang’s popular bike week has been growing in popularity over it’s seven year life. It started as a small rally and has since grown into a much larger event event drawing an audience from throughout Southern Thailand.

Some facts about Harley Davidson: - The company was started in 1903 by William Harley and Arthur Davidson in Milwaukee - The first bikes manufactured by the pair were built on a bicycle frame and features a 116cc engine - in 1905 a harley davidson bike won a race for the first time - in 1917 the official Harley Davidson race division was set up - In WWI half of all bikes used were Harley Davidson bikes - In 2010, a Harley Davidson XR1200 broke the long distance motorcycle jump world record, jumping 183.7 feet (a record that was once held by Evel Kneivel in 1975 & Bubba Blackwell in 1999). Harley Davidson is an iconic brand in the world of motorcycle enthuasists, it’s a household name and a respected one as it seems to inspire people to go where they thought not possible, to venture on in the face of danger or adversity. The brand of Harley Davidson has inspired other manufactures to create similar chopper styled vehicles which can be seen in great numbers at the of the bike weeks throughout Thailand. In Krabi a large Honda presence was in force with shadows and customs choppers with Honda engines, Kawakasi vulcan’s could be found (although not in great numbers) as well. Next years Ao Nang bike week will be a great event and we hope you can partake in the event.

FOUR STEPS TO PARADISE

Just off Ao Nang’s coast, visiting the four Islands is the closest, easiest and most popular way to get a better picture of Ao Nang coastline and what it has to offer. If you are short on time and want to see one iconic place in Krabi, we suggest this tour as it offers you a range of breathtaking islands, beautiful beaches as well as a numerous fish and underwater creatures to catch a glimpse of. These Islands, the ones that can be seen on the horizon from the beach, must be at the top of your list of things to do while in Krabi. Explore unique limestone islands by a traditional long-tail boat. Swimming, snorkeling, sunbathing and photography are the main activities you will be able to enjoy. Expect plenty of sun, turquoise waters and white sandy beaches lined with palm trees. The tour is aptly named the ‘four island tour’ making it easy o understand what this tour offers. We are going to briefly go over the places you can expect to see while on the trip.

58

www.krabi-magazine.com

The Four Islands that make up the tour are: • Koh Gai • Koh Tub • Koh Poda • Railay (Phranang cave)

Koh Gai, named Chicken Island because of its rock formation that looks like the head of a chicken. One end of the island consists of steep cliffs, while the other end has beautiful beaches along a peninsula. This peninsula gets flooded at high tide, creating a small island. At low tide, you can walk between Koh Gai and Koh Tup. Koh Tup, is only a few hundred meters from Koh Gai and linked to it by a sand bar that is above the surfaces at low tide known in Thai as “Talay Whak”. Koh Poda, a large Island with a coconut plantation at the center. The boats park at one end of a long beach where you can find toilets and some kiosks selling snacks, mostly Thai food such as grilled chicken and Som Tam (papaya salad), fruits and drinks. This part of the beach can get quite busy, but you can walk for about 20 minutes down the beach, it is really well worth the walk and you will almost certainly find sections of peace. Last but not least, you will end the tour by visiting Railay Beach. The four main areas of Railay consist of Phranang, West Railay, East Railay, and Ton Sai.

June | 2017

59

Phranang Cave is a sacred place to the sea gypsies in the area and you can see many shrines in there. The cave, on the East side of the Railay Bay is famous for its wonderful stalactites and stalagmites. Since ancient times, Phranang (meaning “Princess”) Cave has been where fishermen, before going out to sea, have made offerings to the symbolic Phallus of Shiva (known as the “Siwaleung” or “Palad Khik” in Thai). The fishermen, who say the cave is the home of a mythical sea princess, believe their offerings will bring them success in their fishing and protect them from danger, but what is more remarkable is that the cave contains a large collection of carved wooden phallic symbols, offerings and other objects believed to help with fertility. East Railay Beach is the docking point for boats arriving from Krabi. The East Beach is primarily covered in dense mangrove which is unsuitable for swimming. On the Northern end of the waterfront there is a commercial area along a promenade with many restaurants and bars and various services including a Muay Thai school and lower-priced resorts than in West Railay. West Railay Beach, connected to the East side by paths through the large resorts or by trails through thin jungle cover, is the primary destination for beach-goers. The beach is flanked by high limestone cliffs on either side. The focal point of West Railay Beach is centered on a short walking street lined with restaurants and shops. Ton Sai is the place to be for climbers and backpackers with a more rustic character than the glitz of West Railay and the shops and restaurants of the East Railay boardwalk.

THE SUNSET ISLAND Koh Lanta consists of two islands, Koh Lanta Noi and Koh Lanta Yai. Koh Lanta Noi is the smaller of the two and does not have tourist facilities. Visitors travelling by road from the mainland pass through the smaller island on the way to Koh Lanta Yai - the center of it all.

B

an Sala Dan village on the north side of the island is Lanta Yai’s commercial center and the pier where visitors arrive on the island. It is a row of shops, seafood restaurants on stilts, dive shops, tour operators, banks, and guest houses that cater to newcomers. The bulk of the Lanta beaches lie along the west coast – hence it’s often referred to as “The Sunset Island” – and can be reached by road. Khao Kwang, Khlong Dao, and Phra Ae have long stretches of white sand facing the Andaman sea, while Khlong Khong, Khlong Nin, and Ba Kan Tiang, and other smaller bays take in more dramatic views and are less crowded for swimming. Ba Kantiang Bay has spectacular crystal-clear seawater, soft white sand, romantic sunsets in utmost privacy. It’s the picture of a postcard, symbolizing a luxe hideaway in Lanta for relaxing in natural surroundings.

64

Known as Ban San Kau, this sea gypsy’s settlement is based on south-east Lanta Yai. It is there that an old clan of traditional Chao Ley try to preserve a disappearing way of life in this fast-developing island. Once called Ban Si Raya, Old Town was historically a commercial port for Chinese and Arabic trading boats that sailed between the ports of Phuket, Penang, and Singapore. Today it is a village with a few rows of stilted shop houses and home to an ancient community that was established on the island long ago. It’s a picturesque place dating back 100 years, from the old days of sea trading. Near the shacks along the coast, local fishermen still dock their longtail boats and make for an authentic snapshot of local life.

UNPLUG IN KOHJUM Geography brought electricity to Koh Jum late in 2009 as the island was in the direct path of the new underwater electric cable connecting Koh Phi Phi to the mainland. Now that Koh Jum is plugged-in, has it lost its reputable character that has attracted intrepid travelers over the past couple of decades? We are pleased to report that Koh Jum is still as tranquil and laid back as it always has been. In fact, what is most noticeable are the lack of noisy generators found at most of the islands resorts. Folks come to Koh Jum to tune out; the island’s nature and culture dominate the minimal tourist infrastructure. The existing resorts on Koh Jum have their own family run character, ranging from the backpackers’ paradise to luxurious beach villas. Koh Pu Mountain is the dominant geological feature on the island at over 400 meters. It’s a great hike for the adventurous and a vital refuge of native habitat still harboring Asian Pied Hornbills and Burmese pythons. The three villages, Koh Pu, Ting Rai, and Koh Jum are situated on the back side of the island, amongst the mangroves while the resorts are located opposite, facing the open Andaman Sea. This division allows the villagers to remain authentic without a significant tourist infrastructure while the resorts are all located on the beaches. Koh Jum is predominately a large Muslim populated sub-district of Krabi, home to over 1,500 inhabitants. The locals of these villages engage mostly in fishing, rubber cultivation and the local crafts of cloth

72

weaving and painting or “batik” as it is known here. While the north is mountainous, the south is comprised of dense jungle, cashew nut trees, rubber plantations, casuarinas, and nipa-palms. Since all the resorts face west, there are epic sunsets to be had all along the

island. The renowned Koh Jum Lodge is an excellent place to stay for a few days, and has superb views to boot. Access to the island is by longtail taxi boats which leave from the mainland at the port town of Laem Kruat.

Jum using the Krabi-Koh Lanta ferry which stops at two locations on Koh Jum, both of which are offshore so local longtail boats will come from the island to pick up passengers. The lack of any deep ports on the island keep the ferry boats out at sea and almost prevent large masses of tourists from overcrowding the island. Getting here is quite an adventure and this ends up defining the interesting community of resorts and visitors that have made this island their home and the place they return to year after year. Getting to Koh Jum can be very simple or a bit of a nightmare – it all depends on how much you know about it. This is where Krabi magazine can help. We recently took the trip to Koh Jum ourselves and have decided to share the adventure with our readers. There are two ways to get to Koh Jum by passing ferry or longtail boat. The ferries leave from Koh Lanta at 8am and from Krabi at 11am, and both stop as they pass alongside Koh Jum and signal to longtail boats to come and pick up visitors to land ashore at Koh Jum. Koh Phi Phi also has ferries which leave at 2pm and operate on the same principle as above.

There is now a songthaew you can take direct from Krabi Town to Laem Kruat. During the high season most visitors come to Koh www.krabi-magazine.com

June | 2017

73

The second way to get to Koh Jum is to go to the port town of Laem Kruat, from where you can catch a longtail boat directly to Koh Jum. This was our favorite of the two methods of travel. If you are driving, it takes about one hour to get from Ao Nang to Laem Kruat. You just head to Tesco Lotus and then continue until you see the large overhead signs which tell you to turn right for “Koh Jam”. This road will lead to the small locality of Laem Kruat, where you will find a large pier with boats going to Koh Jum. If you don’t have transport of your own, you can always catch a blue and yellow “songthaew” – the local buses that have benches in the back. On the side of the “songthaew” will be written – Krabi, Bus Station, Tesco, Big C, Laem Kruat. They are frequent and easy to spot. These buses will leave from all of these locations at intervals throughout the day and will take you directly to the Laem Kruat pier. The pier is a bit misleading. We waited at the end of the pier before realizing the longtail taxis were passing us by and docking at the mainland. We went back and followed our noses along past the shops until we saw a slipway with goods and people being unloaded. It was the second slipway we needed to get to “Moo Too,” the place on Koh Jum we were being collected from. If you know the name of the pier on Koh Jum you need to get to, just ask anyone in this area and they will direct you to the correct boat. We got on and soon were chugging along through the mangroves with a boat full of happy local Muslim women that looked as if they hadn’t changed a bit since 1925. We arrived at Koh Jum just 45 minutes later, paid our 70 baht fare, and were taken by “taxi” (a battered old pickup truck) through the winding dirt track until we reached our destination resort. Give it a go and you will see a different side of Thailand from years gone by. Well worth the experience.
