EDITOR A HAPPY NEW YEAR STARTS IN KRABI Everybody who comes here knows that Krabi is a prime destination when it comes to the combination of sun and sea. Krabi has hundreds of beaches ranging from some you won’t find on any map to long white sandy ones. Then there is the amazing amount of sunshine allowing you to enjoy those stunning beaches surrounded with limestone cliffs. But there is a lot more to the region than just a blend of geography and climate. There is plenty to do in Krabi, and you can easily fill up your holiday and still not have seen and done everything. You can rent a motorbike and drive to Ao Thalane to paddle on a kayak and explore all the mystic mangroves that the area has to offer, or discover the traditional lives and customs that are part of Krabi’s villages. You can also learn more about tattoos and have the audacity to try either the traditional sak yant in a temple or the modern body art to one of the several tattoo artists who have their shops in Krabi. If you want to fall in with local people, take part in one of the most famous popular spectator sports of Thailand, cockfighting, and enjoy this unique event. Holidays in Krabi mean enjoying what is immediately to hand, relaxing on the beaches, cruising on islands, snorkeling, or it can mean digging a bit deeper and discovering a plethora of possibilities. BEACHES.
AO NANG BEACH at 20km from Krabi Town is the most developed of Krabi’s beaches; a long stretch of white sand with limestone karsts as a backdrop. All of your accommodation, shopping and service needs are found here. This is the hub from which to plan your trip at sea and to the nearby islands on a typical longtail boat. NOPPHARAT THARA BEACH just around the corner from Ao Nang, is 3km long yet still undeveloped, with only a few resorts and bars. Attractive because of its natural setting, this is where local youngsters and families gather at sunset and on weekends with picnics. Savour some local Muslim snacks at the beach stalls, or fill yourself with seafood in the local restaurants at the very end of the beach, near the Noppharat Thara National Park headquarters. At low tide, walk out together with millions of small crabs on the sandy pathways to the small islands near the beach. KLONG MUANG BEACH is a further 20km away from Ao Nang;

it is the up-market side of Krabi, the place to be if you are after a peaceful holiday. Catering to families and couples, it is here that you really get that well deserved repose, surrounded by pristine nature. RAILAY AND TONSAI BEACHES are split and separated from Krabi and Ao Nang by monumental limestone mountains. Railay has two sides, east and west, and its settings are simply marvelous: crystal clear waters, pure sandy beaches, lush mountains, and rocky islands emerging from the sea. Both beaches are known the world over for their majestic climbing routes. They can only be reached by boat, a 15-minute ride from Ao Nang or 30 minutes from Krabi Town. Enjoy a cocktail in one of the beach bars, visit the Phranang Cave, challenge yourself on a rock climbing or cliff jumping course (yes, into the sea!), hike the limestone massif to a lagoon and a viewpoint, or simply chill out. KOH LANTA BEACHES have a wide selection of resorts for all tastes and pockets. Lanta Yai island has long stretches of
gleaming white sandy beaches and shallow emerald waters. Lined with tropical vegetation, a private spot is never more than a short walk away on a southern beach at Lanta Yai. TUBKAEK BEACH Another real place to hide away; long, clean and powerful, the area boasts breathtaking views over the Koh Hong archipelago and provides for wonderfully charming sunsets. KOH PODA This is the iconic island of Krabi and the first and most dramatic one you seem from Ao Nang beach. Hop on a longtail boat - the local wooden boats with their picturesque prow and sail away surrounded by turquoise waters. KOH GAI This should be next on your list as it is right next to Koh Poda. a chickens neck and head, some would argue more like that of a turkey but it’s up to you. You know those postcards with people walking on a sandy isthmus that connects to another island? Yep, here the second island is Koh Tub and is only accessible at low tide. THE KOH HONG This island archipelago demands everyone’s attention as it is one of the highlight of Krabi province. The Archipelago, a group of limestone islands with many a hidden caves and lagoons make it perfect for snorkeling and exploration. Make sure you stop at Lading island after Koh Hong as it is much less visited and sports a blend of both lush jungle and tropical waters. KOH PHI PHI Private bays, limestone cliffs, waters rich in marine life and caves where swallow’s nests are harvested are all here on the island that Leonardo Di Caprio once rolled his hot bod in while filming “The beach” at the now iconic Maya Bay. that have a unique atmosphere. Tune in to the slow culture here, imbibe the peace, and recharge your batteries with the soundtrack of lapping waves. KOH LANTA the developing island at the southern end of the province known for its prime sunset viewing spots , heaps of activities, and glimpses into sea gypsy life, is where you will meet nature and tradition. It’s also a National Park area that comprises many different islands surrounded by coral reefs, such as Koh Ngai, Koh Mook and the remote Koh Rok.
JUNGLE AREAS.
LIMESTONE MOUNTAINS or karsts characterize most of the inland Krabi area, the most spectacular being the crags of Sai Tai. Susaan Hoi is a 40 million year-old seashell cemetery; once a large swamp where freshwater crustaceans proliferated, today it’s home to 40 centimeter thick, shell encrusted limestone slabs, a geological uniqueness not far from Ao Nang. KHAO PHANOM BENCHA NATIONAL PARK at 20km from Krabi Town, comprises
waterfalls, streams, lush forests and caves. It is home to all kind of flora and wildlife and to the highest mountain in the region from which it takes the name. One of the features of the park is Huay Toh Waterfall where water runs down onto several huge pools that you can swim in. TARNBOK KHORANEE NATIONAL PARK in the north of the region, consists of limestone mountains, verdant tropical forest, caves and beautiful islands. It is well known for its different species of trees growing around a large natural crystal clear pool, and for the hundreds of birds’ species. SA MORAKOT, THE EMERALD POOL is a natural wonder: a pond of turquoise water with an average temperature of 30-40C, fed by a hot spring in the middle of the jungle. HOT SPRINGS Hot Springs of Klong Thom, natural Jacuzzis that melt away tensions and relieve body and mind with the mineral enriched waters falling into rocky ponds.

NEWS BLACKLIST AWAITS VISA-OVERSTAYING FOREIGNERS Bureau chief Pol Lt Gen Nathathorn Prausoontorn said that
Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha had approved the bureau’s proposal on November27 to fine and ban overstayers from reentering the country for some years depending on the length of their overstay. People who overstay will be treated according to whether they turn themselves in or are arrested. For cases of surrender, those who overstay their visa by up to one year will receive a one-year re-entry ban, and for more than one year they will be banned from re-entering Thailand for three years. Those with more than three years’ overstay will blacklisted for five years. Excessive overstay of five years or more will result in a re-entry ban of ten years. In cases of arrest, those who overstay their visas by up to one year will be banned from re-entering Thailand for five years and those with more than one year’s overstay period will be blacklisted for ten years. The immigration commissioner expected the new regulation to improve control on visiting foreigners and screen out

The Nepal earthquake was one of the most searched international news reports in Thailand this year, according to Google’s “Year in Search 2015”. The search engine’s annual report looks at the year through the collective eyes of the world on the Net, offering a unique perspective on the year’s major events and hottest trends based on searches. The search found that Thai’s turned to google to keep up with the latest news and developments at home and overseas by searching for events such as the Nepal earthquake, the Bangkok bombing and Paris attacks. However the report also reflected the lighter side of things, with local celebrities dominating the Top Trending Searches list. People kept tabs on the latest celebrity gossip, including superstar Araya “Chompoo” Hargate’s wedding, while their love for food was also evident in their search, ranging from duck jelly to fried pork and Thai-style spicy salad.

We know the importance of drinking water but why the hesitation in drinking it?

ater; we sail on it, swim in it, bathe with it, consume it. Water truly is everywhere; still most take it for granted. Without water, your body would stop working properly. Water makes up more than half of your body weight and a person can’t survive for more than a few days without it. Why? Your body has lots of important jobs and it needs water to do many of them. Any fluid you drink will contain water, but pure water is always the best choices. Lots of foods contain water, too. Fruit contains quite a bit of water, which you could probably tell if you’ve ever bitten into a peach and felt the juices dripping down your chin. Coming into the school, first impressions are that everyone here is very cheerful and welcoming. The school started construction in November 2014 and opened the school on time in September 2015. The school has so far attracted thirty children aged between five and eleven years in the Primary section, and another four students in the Secondary section. All the teaching staff are enthusiastic, fully qualified and mostly United Kingdom trained and experienced. The whole place is surrounded with lush vegetation and offers the children enough space to exert themselves joyfully. As a parent your first concern is that your child will be happy. Ao Thalane has some of the most beautiful mangrove forests in Thailand. About twenty kilometers from Krabi Town, this section of the coast is covered in dense foliage that wraps the caves, cliffs and amazing shaped Karsts.
The kayak routes are relatively easy to work and you will be cruising on flat calm water so it is within the capabilities of first time kayakers or kids. You can ask a tour guide to give you basic instructions for how to paddle and give some basic information on the kayak as well as providing life jackets.
The area is perfect for cruising in a kayak as it has numerous small inlets, caves and hidden lagoons as well as the Karst Mountains which provide the backdrop for this area with its complex network of channels to meander through the dense mangrove forests. Kingfishers, Herons and crab eating Macaques inhabit this area along with many ever present macaques whom will

Most of the kayaks have three seats although it is normal to use one kayak for two adults. It is quite inconvenient to have three people paddling, so it is best if one adult goes in one kayak with one child. No two days in the mangroves are quite the same. On some days the place is alive with wildlife, birds calling, monkeys hooping, lizards splashing and cicadas singing away.
On other days, it is very quiet, almost as if the widlife has fallen asleep. You never know quite what you’ll get but it is always magical. High tide is generally the best time to go, there are many more channels that you can paddle through and lagoons and caves you can see. But even at low tide, it is still a wonderful place and you will be able to see much of the caves and nature that lives in the muddy ecosystem. As the water drops, more and more of the incredible root system that the mangrove forests are built on comes into view. Along with the root system also comes a great varied amount of local critters, so keep your cameras ready. CHILDREN'S DAY On the second Saturday of January, Thai people celebrate Children’s Day by taking their children out to have fun and permit them to live life in their style. Children are considered the most valuable resource of the country and therefore with to give praise to them when possible. Children’s Day or “Wan Dek” in Thai is celebrated to give children the opportunity to have fun and to create awareness about their significant role towards the development of the country. There is a Thai saying that goes, “Children are the future of the nation, if the children are intelligent, the country will be prosperous”. To help stimulate children to be
aware of their significant role in the country, the National Children’s Day was held for the first time on the first Monday of October 1955 and continued like this until 1963, when it was changed to the second Saturday of January. The change was made since the rainy season passes by January and the second Saturday was declared as a government holiday. A committee has been set up by the government, which co-ordinates with different agencies in both public and private sectors, to organize Children’s Day celebrations across the nation.
Usually, His Majesty the King gives advice addressing the children while the Supreme Patriarch of Thailand gives a moral teaching. The Prime Minister also usually gives each Children’s Day a theme and a slogan.

Normally, the age of children taking part in the celebrations should be less than fourteen years old.
Many organizations from both government and commercial sectors have celebration activities for children, they can enter zoos or ride buses for free. Local authorities such as the Army, Navy, Air Force bases, Government House and the Parliament House Complex organize special events. These government buildings are usually prohibited to even visitors on ordinary days. In these buildings events may include a guided tour and an exhibition. For example, at the Government House children have an opportunity to view the Prime Minister’s office and sit at the bureau. The Royal Thai Air Force usually invites children to go and explore the many aircraft. The Bangkok Bank distributes stationery, such as pens, pencils and books to every child that enters the bank as community service. By doing so, the bank aims to educate children about saving money and the benefits that it can reap on a long term.

DENGUE FEVER: SYMPTOMS, CAUSES AND TREATMENT By. Dr. Daranee Kwangaew Harper, MD at Wattanapat Medical Clinic Most people are aware of the most common diseases carried by mosquitos such as Yellow Fever and Malaria. However, many are less familiar with another mosquito born virus, Dengue Fever. It can be found in 128 countries of the world and is most prevalent in tropical and sub-tropical countries and makes an appearance in many more temperate climate countries as well. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) says that there could be up to 400 million cases of Dengue fever each year and the World Health Organization (WHO) has estimated that worldwide, there are 22 000 deaths from Dengue Fever, mostly among children. The numbers have increased in recent years due to a better reporting and diagnosis and with the movement of urban populations into rural areas. HOW IS DENGUE FEVER CONTRACTED? The disease itself can only be passed to humans from an infected mosquito. The offending breed of mosquitos are identified by their stripes that are light grey to white. It cannot be passed from human to human but first has to be carried by a mosquito host. WHAT ARE DENGUE FEVER’S SYMPTOMS? The onset of the disease can be very similar to a case of the flu. Symptoms, which usually develop in three to eight days after exposure, are chills, fevers up to 104° F, headaches, pain upon moving the eyes, loss of appetite, lower backache and pain in the legs and joints. These will

subside after a few days and a couple of days later the fever will return and a red, itchy rash can break out all over the body, except the face. Also, the palms of the hands and soles of the feet may turn red and become swollen. WHAT TO DO? If you think you may have been exposed to Dengue Fever and develop these symptoms, you must see a physician immediately. Testing has been perfected and can identify the antibodies in the blood that will occur if the fever is present and a diagnosis can quickly be given. HOW TO TREAT DENGUE FEVER? Since the dengue fever is a virus, no specific medications or antibiotics have been developed to treat it. With rest and good hydration most people will make a full recovery. However, a severe form of the disease known as Dengue Hemorrhage Fever (DHF) can develop and the infected person can begin bleeding from the gums and in the digestive system along with vomiting and stomach pain. DHF can also get more serious involving the heart and lungs whihc requires hospitalization. Self-use of no steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) and aspirin is not recommended as they can promote bleeding and should be administered only under the supervision of a doctor. Acetaminophen (Tylenol) or codeine are usually given to relieve pain. Dengue is fatal in less than 1% of the cases. The acute portion of the disease with fever and
body pain will usually last about one to two weeks. The period of convalescence and the feeling of weakness may take several weeks to pass. SO HOW CAN I AVOID DENGUE IN THE FIRST PLACE? Good mosquito hygiene and common sense are your best weapons. When appropriate, wear long sleeves and clothes that will cover the legs. Sleep in mosquitofree spaces, keep windows and doors without screens closed to keep mosquitos out. Use insect repellents that contain DEET, they are effective in repelling mosquitos. Almost all “natural” repellents and vitamin patches will do absolutely nothing to keep mosquitos away. Mosquitos can detect the carbon dioxide exhaled in human breath, they will follow the trail back to you if you stay in one place too long. Also, mosquitos are poor fliers and have difficulty moving where there is wind. You can get some real relief from them on windy days and even sitting in front of the breeze stirred up by a fan can help keep them away. Enjoy your vacation in this beautiful and relaxing tropical paradise but be aware that trouble can come from small things in these wonderful places. Use common sense and avoid those irritating little mosquitos as much as possible. Be aware of Dengue Fever’s symptoms and seek medical help if you begin to display them.

ockfighting in Thailand is very popular and has been a part of the country’s culture for several hundred years. Said to be the world’s oldest spectator sports, it is also very popular throughout all of Asia and legally governed by stringent rules. It is illegal for the cocks to use artificial spurs that can cause serious injuries. Instead, owners use padded metal spurs, called gaffes, to lessen their impact. The “fight to the death rule” is also outlawed, so cocks do live to fight again. They are usually retired after two years.

In Krabi, cockfighting is mainly a program organized by the local Muslims. They love gambling, cockfights and fish fighting. The cockfights are great events in which local people find real enjoyment. In fact, fighter cocks are very expensive and they are groomed with meticulous care. Although no definitive proof exists, legend has it that cockfighting began as a spectator sport in Thailand around 1350 A.D. In 1562, Crown Prince Naresuan was captured by the Burmese when he was seven years old, to ensure that the prince’s father stayed loyal to the Burmese King. It is said that the Prince, who grew up watching and enjoying cockfights, took part in one with a Burmese Prince and won. Today, in the city of Ayutthaya, at Wat Suwandararam, you can see murals which depict the fights between the Burmese Prince’s roosters and Prince Naresuan’s birds. The Prince returned to Thailand, and as a King he still enjoyed the sport of cockfighting. It was a sport quickly taken up by the aristocrats of the day. Nowadays, it is more the rural population of Thailand that enjoys this sport. There are two types of purebred Thai fighting birds. The first is the type that Prince Naresuan took with him to Burma, the “kai lueng hang khao”, which literally translates as “yellow chicken with a white tail”. This bird is still very popular today amongst breeders, it is a native of Phitasanulok in Northern Thailand. The second major breed of cock is a native of Central Thailand, the “pradu hang dam” with a brown body and a black tail. Thai birds are known for their aggressiveness in the sport, with blistering jump kicks and a barrage of pecks to their opponents. Burmese cocks on the other hand are known for their

strategic fighting. The most prized fighting bird these days in the world of cockfighting is a cross breed of Thai and Burmese, combining the best from both animals, the patience of the Burmese with the power of the Thai. At six weeks old, breeders select the chicks that already show promise of being good strong fighters. They are fed a special highprotein, low-fat diet to build up their strength. They may also be given steam baths with lemongrass to toughen up their skin. Fighting cocks live for about ten years but only two or three of those years are spent fighting. It is also a requirement that all cockfighting birds register with the Livestock Department, where they receive a “Fighting Cock Passport”. This is a requirement that has been in place ever since the outbreak of avian flu, in 2004. The identity cards certify the vaccination records of the birds. Fights take place every weekend around the country. And it is estimated that today in Thailand the cockfighting industry has an audience of over 200,000 people each weekend, held at over seventy five licensed venues throughout the country. The cockfights themselves take place in round, sandy pits measuring about twenty feet across, with one and a half foot high padded walls. The only person allowed into the pit during the fight is the referee. Thai cockfighting does not include spurs or blades, and the bouts do not last until death; usually they will last up to fifteen minutes. Fairness is the name of the game in Thailand; before a cockfight, owners gather to compare the weight of their birds so that they can match up good fighting pairs. Though gambling is illegal in Thailand, official bets are placed; however, unofficial
bets made amongst the spectators continue throughout the fight. This is because organizers of some cockfights can ask for, and sometimes receive, an exemption from the gambling laws and bets are allowed at the fights. People keep track of their wagers in small notebooks, furiously scribbling down their wins and losses. There is a lot of excitement around the rings with people shouting, yelling out to the birds, to each other, laughing and commiserating with one another. It has been said by some that the cockfight has come to symbolize the Thai’s love of a fair fight, the popularity of the sport speaks for itself.

Tell us how you started your career as a makeup artist? I’ve had an interest in makeup since I was young and it really took off when I studied fashion design. I started learning on my own by reading books and asking advice. In 2005, I was lucky enough to be introduced to the Thai star makeup artist Pee, who became my first teacher and so I started my career as a makeup artist. I began by applying makeup for my own models during fashion design classes and shows, and the other participant’s models as well. I have been active for ten years now and I work mostly for international weddings, ceremonies and fashion photo shoots. Where did you study? At first I read a lot of makeup books and magazines such as Bobbi Brown publications, and then I had the chance to meet the Thai star makeup artist, Pee which allowed me to learn from the best. After that I applied to the Makeup academy by KMA professional cosmetic to improve my knowledge. Where do you get the inspiration in your work? When I meet a client I try to know them better and learn more about their taste and the look they are looking for by talking to them. I observe their style, the clothes that they will be wearing and the colors that will match with it. It is also important to keep in mind what type of event they are planning to attend, wedding makeup might not look the same as a fashion shoot makeup.
Are there any professional makeup artists whom you like or follow? Two makeup artists come to mind, the Thai makeup artist Pearypie and the international artist Bobbi Brown. Pearypie is young and with her I share the idea that more experience and knowledge is always a good thing. Like her, I try to create my best work every time in order to gain more experience. Bobbi Brown is a true idol of mine. Her style and how she works is an inspiration to me, I really want to follow her steps. She knows how to make each of her clients unique by offering them a makeup that fits perfectly.

Like a painter will tell a story when painting on a canvas, I try to tell the story of the person through makeup. Good makeup styling will highlight a story, this is my signature way of working. I try not to have a specific style of my own, to me the personality of the person is always the deciding factor.

Exotic Fruits DRAGON FRUIT (GAO MUNG GORN) This is probably the most dramatic-looking of all the Thai fruits, and the outside appearance gives NO indicator of the inside appearance at all! The fruit is a bright pink oblong shape with pointed green leaves springing out from all sides – hence the name, as it DOES look a little dragon-like. Cutting it open down the middle of the fruit will display a white center, filled with tiny black dots. To eat this fruit, scoop out the filling with a spoon. This fruit is moist, sweet, crunchy and delicious! When picking out dragon fruit, “the redder the better” for ripeness!
G U AVA ( F A R A N G ) Looks like a bumpy/wrinkled green apple. Cutting guava is very pretty. Slice ½ way into it, wedge-like, and then slice all around the guava this way. We pulled out the wedges and ate them this way. This doesn’t taste like the Hawaiian fruit. Hawaiian guava fruits (called strawberry guava) are pink and sweeter. These were somewhat bland, crunchy and starchy – a little pear-like.
ROSE APPLE (CHOM-POO) This looks like a cross between a thin red pepper and an apple. Cut them into lengthwise slices and eat the thin pieces. These are delicious – sweet and crunchy. They are also called Bell or Mountain Apples
MANGOSTEEN (MANG-KUT) Mangosteen is a bizarre looking fruit with a round, deep purple shell. It has flavorful white flesh that is eaten in sections. This has a delicious, distinctive flavor that is also wonderful for juices. Mangosteen is becoming better known globally for it’s remarkable healing properties.
JACKFRUIT (KHANOON) This is a fascinating fruit that comes in a huge spindly ball. Opening it up, you can pull out separate pods, which are around 3” long. These pods have large seeds inside that can be peeled, boiled and eaten with salt. The flesh of the fruit has a pungent taste and smell, somewhat crunchy and a little sour/starchy feel to it. Sometimes they are very sweet, and other times they are pretty bland.
L O N G A N ( L A M - YA I ) Look like big brown grapes on a branch. They have a thin but hard shell that is easy to break open. The flesh is clear and very sweet with a pit inside. These are delicious but don’t eat too many at one time, as you can get cold sores or even a fever.

5 TIPS TO MAKE YOUR NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS A SUCCESS We all likely have many more than five goals we would like to accomplish this year, but in keeping with the lean mentality. These five resolutions, if done mindfully can have dramatic ripple effects on your health, happiness and professional success. 1: Smile more. It is well known among social psychologists now that the simple act of smiling can make you happier and healthier, even if your smile is a forced one, so practice more in 2016. Smiling works for an obvious reason, it is contagious, literally. The key takeaway: when you smile, you may appear more inviting, attractive, relaxed and sincere to others. And when you don’t smile, the impression you give may be the opposite. 2: Maintain a health and fitness regimen. The health impacts of regular physical exercise are widely known (and very important to your success as a leader). But, in addition to reducing stress, fighting disease and improving mood, energy and sleep, getting regular exercise and eating healthier can also make you appear to be a better leader. 3: Schedule personal time. That’s right, schedule your personal time. Many of us are used to scheduling, but for some reason only seem to do so in the context of work. However, there is a growing body of evidence suggesting that the most productive people are not actually the busiest but rather those who prioritize their free time for personal passions, for family and for activities completely unrelated to their jobs. In the New Year, schedule time for family and friends, your work will improve so as your relationships. 4: Don’t commit to things you can’t do. There’s quite a bit of literature out there about the fake-it-until-you-make-it mentality that is, committing to things outside your comfort zone in an effort to grow and improve. Can’t make it to dinner with your friend next week but prefer to say ‘maybe’ so you can delay the disappointment? Just say you can’t. Not overextending yourself will save you time and consternation down the road, and when you do commit, you’ll actually follow through and become known as a person whose word means something. 5: Use your calendar. One of the best ways to stay on top of your goals is to schedule relentlessly. Managing your to-do list in an online calendar will help you miss fewer deadlines, keep you organized and ensure that you are prioritizing your most important tasks. Key non-work items to schedule include seeing family and friends, reading the news and books, engaging in personal hobbies and checking personal finances.
Don’t Just Set your goals, Maintain them! Success with resolutions, as with business objectives, isn’t merely about setting goals but maintaining them. Come up with your own system to periodically monitor your progress and assess whether a change in strategy is necessary. That requires will power, discipline and a fluctuation in mindset between living in the moment and planning.

RURAL Beekeeping by Shama Sukhumvit Bangkok Part of the Shama CSR focuses to stimulate entrepreneurship to alleviate poverty, Shama Sukhumvit Bangkok is looking to partner with Raitong Organics Farm to introduce a rural beekeeping initiative. Through this scheme, Shama will provide the farming community with the resources to maintain healthy Asian honeybee populations and also encourage them to earn a supplementary income. Shama and Raitong Organics Farm will provide professional training and education on basic Asian honeybee biology and also the important ecological role bees play in the environment. As part of their corporate social responsibility (CSR) efforts, Vogue Resort & Spa Ao Nang and Amari Vogue Krabi have teamed

up to assist the local community to help alleviate poverty and also protect the region’s biodiversity through their Plan Bee program. Khun Phusit, Resort Manager for Vogue Resort & Spa, Ao Nang tells us more about the project: The objectives of Plan Bee are: To help alleviate poverty and protect our biodiversity by providing rural community with practical training and tools to earn a supplementary income while sustaining healthy Asian honeybee populations through beekeeping. To educate the younger generation about biodiversity and beekeeping The process of Plan Bee includes: Engaging twelve villagers from different families with the lowest income of
the village – six of which should be women, through an interview process. Introduce beekeeping to a school, training the teachers and students on the importance of biodiversity and beekeeping. Provide a two-day training, to be conducted by Khun Dolrohman Noom-Oui (Apiarist). The selected twelve villagers and the school will each receive two hives and other start-up tools. In return, these villagers and the school will offer two bottles of honey from their first harvest to us, and in turn they can choose to use the honey as their corporate gifts or sell it to Amari. Regarding their following harvests, they will be able to sell the honey to whom they want, whilst it helps promote Amari properties, as a supply chain initiative.

The results of Plan Bee The best example of seeing the results is to review the progress from our first year’s villagers and school. The villagers that were first trained in 2013 are now successful honey producers. The image to the left shows their products which have been nominated as an OTOP (One Tambon One Product) product for their subdistrict. The children and teachers from Baan Nai Nang School can be very proud of their accomplishments. They were also trained in 2013 and have proven to be very creative and industrious. Producing not only honey but making natural honey soaps carefully packaged and presented. They represented Krabi Province for a ‘Student Art and Craft Fair’ competition and eventually were sent to Bangkok to present their products and were rewarded with the winner for all provinces of Thailand. The initial group of twelve villagers started the program with twenty four hives, two each as per the project plan.At this day, they own approximately 650 hives. Overall we are extremely happy with the accomplishments and success of all stakeholders. Even the bees must be happy with their role in protecting and maintaining biodiversity.

In the old days, if you got a tattoo done at a certain temple, you would also automatically belong to a group, others who got tattoos from the same temple. This was beneficial for, if you got into a street fight, the fight would stop if you realized you were fighting with someone who had been tattooed at the same temple. Or others tattooed at that temple might come to your aid. Ritual tattoos, otherwise known as Yantra, have been popular in Thailand for generations. In the past, tattoos were not usually done as decorative art but instead were done because people believed they gave them special powers. For centuries, Thai warriors were tattooed before battle to protect them from the enemy and, even today, many Thais believe that a tattoo will keep them safe and even stop a speeding bullet. In modern day Thailand, traditional tattoos are still popular with young Thai men who have just been conscripted into the military and want the comfort of being ‘protected’ before they leave for duty.

A tattoo’s placement on the body has great signi f icance in Thai tattooing. The closer a tattoo is to the head, where the soul is thought to reside, the greater power it will have.

In no other country in the world except Thailand does the tattoo tradition have an annual religious celebration. Once a year, thousands of tattoo enthusiasts from around the world descend on the temple known as Wat Bang Phra, located fifty kilometers outside Bangkok, where dozens of heavily tattooed Buddhist monks are masters of the tattoo art. This Wat is also known as the Temple of the Flying Tiger. Unlike most tattoos in the West, the Thai version comes steeped in spiritual, or some might say superstitious, meaning. Protection, good luck, and blessings from on high are what the tattoo devotees are seeking. Many arrive already heavily tattooed and are there to simply get their designs ‘recharged’, by having the Buddhist monks rebless their body art.
Tattoos in Thailand are also used to ward off evil spirits. These tattoos have images of snakes, tigers, Buddhist images and scriptures, even lucky Thai numbers. They have a specific geometric pattern and involve Vedic chanting by the monk to seal the protective element of the tattoo. When the tattoo is finished, it is then consecrated by the monk in a ceremony involving incense and candles. A tattoo’s placement on the body has great significance in Thai tattooing. The closer a tattoo is to the head, where the soul is thought to reside, greater power it will have. Thai tattooing has adapted to modernity with typical Thai finesse and subtlety. For those who fear that their tattoos may not be well-received in an office modeled after its Western counterparts, Thais may get tattoos not with the usual tattoo inks but with sesame oil or even no pigments of any kind. The tattooing implements, the designs and the mantras are all the same. The result, however, for all intents and purposes, is an ‘invisible’ tattoo, with none of the visible stigma of a tattoo, but with all its magical powers to protect as an amulet and talisman intact. One of Hollywood’s most prominent actresses has had a couple of yantra tattoos done in Bangkok. Angelina Jolie, a frequent visitor to South East Asia, has visited Bangkok a couple of

times to get tattoos. The first one she had done in 2003, five lines of ancient Khmer script to ward off evil and bad luck and the second one in 2004, a large Asian tiger by famous Thai tattoo artist Sompong Kanphai. Jolie believes the tattoos give her protection, and sometimes the belief is all it takes for something to become a reality. So if you are looking for a traditional Thai yantra tattoo, head to Bangkok and ask at one of the thousands of temples. Just like anywhere else in the world though, the yantra aspect of Thai tattoos is fading. Less people now get tattoos done by monks and instead are going to one of several popular tattoo artists who have their own small shops. Thai traditionalists would warn tattoo enthusiasts that ordinary ‘decorative’ tattoos have no power to protect or bless them. Decorative tattoos in the traditionalist’s eyes are executed using modern electric machines in the hands of tattooists with little true feeling, and consequently the tattoos lack authority and integrity. Mainly, they are perceived to lack magic. Such tattoos would have little power to act as a protective

amulet or talisman or to bring good fortune to the wearer.

Nevertheless, tattoos are now becoming art in Thailand, just like everywhere else. Members of Thai bands and rock groups are also getting tattoos as the ‘in, cool Western thing’ to do. The function of these tattoos is a tribal identity, a badge of membership. This is the heart of the whole business, although it is influenced by current trends and passing fads, the purpose of nearly every tattoo is to show that the wearer is a part of something. Krabi is one of the most fascinating tourist attraction in the south of Thailand. Apart from swimming and diving in the sea, getting tattoo is one of the most popular activities here. So, if a more modern tattoo is what you are looking for, head towards the many tattoo artists of Krabi, most of whom have clean tattoo parlors and who sterilize their instruments. Just make sure you go to one with a good reputation and one that is known for being clean.

Koh Lanta consists of two islands, Koh Lanta Noi and Koh Lanta Yai. Koh Lanta Noi is the smaller of the two and does not have tourist facilities. Visitors travelling by road from the mainland pass through the smaller island on the way to Koh Lanta Yai - the center of it all.

Known as Ban San Kau, this sea gypsy’s settlement is based on south-east Lanta Yai. It is there that an old clan of traditional Chao Ley try to preserve a disappearing way of life in this fastdeveloping island. Once called Ban Si Raya, Old Town was historically a commercial port for Chinese and Arabic trading boats that sailed between the ports of Phuket, Penang and Singapore. Today it is a village with a few rows of stilted shop houses and home to an ancient community that was established on the island long ago.
It’s a picturesque place dating back 100 years, from the old days of sea trading. Near the shacks along the coast, local fishermen still dock their longtail boats and make for an authentic snapshot of local life.

KOH JUM The Unofficial guide to one of the hidden treasure of Krabi
K
oh Jum Island is still the quintessential destination in Krabi province if you are looking for authentic Thai village life and development that is still a small footprint.
Koh Pu Mountain is the dominant geological feature on the island at over 400 meters. It’s a great hike for the adventurous and a vital refuge of native habitat still harboring Asian Pied Hornbills and Burmese pythons.
Geography brought electricity to Koh Jum late in 2009 as the island was in the direct path of the new underwater electric cable connecting Koh Phi Phi to the mainland. So now that Koh Jum is plugged-in, has it lost its reputable character that has attracted intrepid travelers over the past couple of decades?
The three villages; Koh Pu, Ting Rai and Koh Jum are situated on the back side of the island, amongst the mangroves while the resorts are located opposite, facing the open Andaman Sea. This division allows the villagers to remain authentic without a significant tourist infrastructure while the resorts are all located on the beaches.
We are pleased to report that Koh Jum is still as tranquil and laid back as it always has been. In fact, what is most noticeable are the lack of noisy generators at most of the islands resorts. Folks come to Koh Jum to tune out; the island’s nature and culture dominate the minimal tourist infrastructure.
Koh Jum is predominately a large Muslim populated sub-district of Krabi, home to over 1,500 inhabitants. The locals of these villages engage mostly in fishing, rubber cultivation and the local crafts of cloth weaving and painting or ‘batik’ as it is known as here. While the north is mountainous, the south is comprised of dense jungle, cashew nut trees, rubber plantations, casuarinas and nipa-palms.
The existing resorts on Koh Jum all have their own family-run character, ranging from the backpackers paradise to luxurious beach villas.

Since all the resorts face West, there are epic sunsets to be had all along the island. The
renowned Koh Jum Lodge is an excellent place to stay for a few days, and has superb views to boot. Access to the island is by longtail taxi boats which leave from the mainland at the port town of Laem Kruat. There is now a songthaew you can take direct from Krabi Town to Laem Kruat. During the high season most visitors come to Koh Jum using the Krabi-Koh Lanta ferry which stops at two locations on Koh Jum, both of which are offshore so local longtail boats will come from the island to pick up passengers. The lack of any deep ports on the island keep the ferry boats out at sea and almost prevent large masses of tourists from overcrowding the island. Getting here is an adventure and this ends up defining the interesting community of resorts and visitors that have made this island their home and the place they return to year after year. Getting to Koh Jum can be very simple or a bit of a nightmare, it all depends on how www.krabi-magazine.com

signs which tell you to turn right for “Koh Jam”. This road will lead to the small locality of Laem Kruat, where you will find a large pier with boats going to Koh Jum.
There are 2 ways to get to Koh Jum- by passing ferry or longtail boat. There are ferries that leave from Koh Lanta at 8am and from Krabi at 11am, both ferries stop as they pass alongside Koh Jum and signal to longtail boats to come and pick up visitors to land ashore Koh Jum.
If you don’t have transport of your own, you can always catch a blue and yellow “songthaew” - the local buses that have benches in the back. On the side of the “songthaew” will be written – Krabi, Bus Station, Tesco, Big C, Laem Kruat, they are frequent and easy to spot.
Koh Phi Phi also has ferries which leave at 2pm and operate on the same principle as above.
These buses will leave from all of these locations at intervals throughout the day and will take you directly to the Laem Kruat pier.
The second way to get to Koh Jum is to go to the port town of Laem Kruat, from where you can catch a longtail boat directly to Koh Jum- this was our favorite of the 2 methods of travel. If you are driving, it takes about one hour to get from Ao Nang to Laem Kruat.
Now, the pier is a bit misleading. We waited at the end of the pier before realizing the longtail taxis were passing us by and docking at the mainland. Then we went back and followed our noses along past the shops until we saw a slipway with goods and people being unloaded. It was the second slipway we needed to get to “Moo Too”, the place on Koh Jum we were being collected from. If you know the name of the pier on Koh Jum

you need to get to, just ask anyone in this area and they will direct you to the correct boat. We got on and soon were chugging along through the mangroves with a boat full of happy local Muslim women that looked as they hadn’t changed a bit since 1925 We arrived at Koh Jum just 45 minutes later, paid our 70thb fare and were taken by “taxi” (a battered old pickup truck) through the winding dirt track until we reached our destination resort. Give it a go and you will see a different side of Thailand from years gone by.

What Does the term Rai mean? A Rai is a a measurement used to describe an area of Land in Thailand. 1 Square Rai is equal to 1,600 Square meters (40M X 40M), all measurements related to the Rai have been derived form the square meter. The Rai equals 4 Ngaan each of which is 400 Talangwa aka. Square meter. On international land measurment systems all of the Thai units of measurements are acceptable units of measurement; The Rai, The Ngaan and The Talangwa. Converting Rai and Wah can be complex and create legal issues when people do not understand what it is that they are signing a contract for.
