Window on krabi the beaches

Ao Nang, at 20km from Krabi Town, is the most developed of Krabi’s beaches, a long stretch of white sandy beach with limestone mountains as a backdrop. It has a wide range of accommodation and services and the main shopping street features restaurants, bars, pubs, souvenir shops, dive centers and tour agencies, massage centers and spas. This is the hub from which to plan your trip at sea and to the nearby islands on a typical longtail boat. Noppharat Thara beach, just around the corner from Ao Nang, is 3km long yet still undeveloped, with only a few resorts and bars. Attractive because of its natural setting, this is where local youngsters and families gather at sunset and at weekends. Savour some local Muslim snacks at the beach stalls, or fill yourself with seafood in the local restaurants at the very end of the beach, near the Noppharat Thara National Park headquarters. At low tide, walk out together with millions of small crabs on the sandy pathways to the small islands near the beach. Railay beaches are split and separated from Krabi and Ao Nang by monumental limestone mountains. Railay has two sides, east and west, and its settings are simply marvelous: crystal clear waters, pure sandy

8

beaches, lush mountains, rocky islands emerging from the sea. Railay can only be reached by boat, a 15 minutes ride from Ao Nang or 30 minutes from Krabi Town. Enjoy a cocktail in one of the beach bars, visit the Phranang Cave, challenge yourself on a rock climbing course, hike the limestone massif to a lagoon and a viewpoint, or simply chill out. Neighbouring Tonsai lies at the base of a cliff that divides it form Railay West. Tonsai has a shallow beach with slow gradients out to sea which is profoundly affected by the tide. Klong Muang beach is a further 20km away from Ao Nang; it is the up-market side of Krabi, the place to be if you are after a peaceful holiday. Catering to families and couples, it is here that you really get the so deserved repose, surrounded by pristine nature. Tubkaek beach is another real place to hide away; long, clean and peaceful, the area has breathtaking views over Koh Hong islands archipelago, and charming sunsets. From there you can venture inside the National Park and try a walking trail to a viewpoint and a waterfall. Koh Lanta beaches have a wide selection of resorts for all tastes and pockets. Lanta Yai island has long stretches of gleaming white sandy beaches and shallow emerald waters. Lined with tropical vegetation, a private spot is never more

than a short walk away on a southern beach at Lanta Yai.

NATURAL HOTSPOTS Limestone mountains or karsts characterize most of the inland Krabi area, the most spectacular being the massifs of Sai Tai. Susaan Hoi is a 40 million year-old seashell cemetery; once a large swamp where freshwater crustaceans proliferated, today home to 40 centimeter thick, shell encrusted limestone slabs, a geological uniqueness not far from Ao Nang. One must find a broken edge to see the shells clearly, since all of those on the upper surface have been walked on and worn down by the elements and are hard to identify. Khao Phanom Bencha National Park, at 20km from Krabi Town, comprises waterfalls, streams, lush forests and caves. It is home to all kind of flora and wildlife and to the highest mountain in the region from which it takes the name. One of the features of the park is Huay Toh Waterfall where water runs down onto several huge pools. Tarnbok Khoranee National Park, in the north of the region, consists of limestone mountains, verdant tropical forest, caves and beautiful islands. It is well known for its different species of trees growing around a

large natural crystal clear pool, and for the hundreds of birds’ species. Phi Hua Toh Cave, in the nearby Bor Thor area, surrounded by mangrove swamps and reachable by boat or kayak, is where to see pre-historic rock paintings depicting animals and humans. Sa Morakot, the Emerald Pool, is a natural wonder: a pond of turquoise water with an average temperature of 30-40C, fed by a hot spring in the middle of the jungle. Hot Springs of Klong Thom, natural Jacuzzis in which to lift away tensions and relieve body and mind with the mineral enriched waters falling into rocky ponds.

THE ISLANDS Hop on or hire a longtail, the local wooden boats with their picturesque prows. Sail away to Koh Poda, surrounded by turquoise waters, or to Koh Kai, shaped as a chicken and therefore called the Chicken Island, from where a walk on a sandy pathway connects it to Koh Tub. Make a longtail boat or speedboat trip to the Koh Hong archipelago, a group of limestone islands with hidden caves and lagoons perfect for kayaking or snorkeling. Join an organized tour to amazing Koh Phi Phi islands, full of marvelous bays, limestone cliffs, waters rich in marine life, caves where swallow nests are harvested,

and much more. Visit Koh Jum and Koh Siboya, small, unspoiled tropical hide-away that have a unique atmosphere. These islands give visitors the time to relax and recharge their batteries. Or venture out on Koh Lanta, the developing island at the southern end of the province home to sea gypsies communities, where you will meet nature and tradition. A National Park area that comprises many different islands surrounded by coral reefs, such as Koh Ngai and remote Koh Rok.

THE CULTURE Ban Natin, on the way from Ao Nang to Klong Muang, is the place to experience the peaceful lifestyle of the local Muslim community. Home accommodation is available, or you can simply make a stopover and see the production of handmade products such as batik paintings, pineapple-fiber paper and coconut shell carving. Wat Klong Thom Museum features various kinds of beads, stone tools, and stone and earthen ornaments in animal shapes of approximately 5,000 years old, uncovered during archeological excavations. Fire dancing, part of the beach culture, is a popular evening activity on the beaches of Koh Lanta and Koh Phi Phi, performed by

acrobatic boys who swing burning torches around their bodies, creating sparkling artistic pictures. Ban Sang-Ka-U is a sea gypsy’s settlement in south-east Lanta Yai. It is there that an old clan of traditional v Ley try to preserve a disappearing way of life in this fast-developing island.

THE TOWN Small, charming, silent at times, nice for a day’s walking tour. Krabi Town is full of old buildings, bars and restaurants, local exotic marketplaces and food stalls at the old Chao Fa pier where to sample the local food. The Krabi motto is: “lively town, lovely people”; Krabi’s simple people are definitely proud of their town and of their warm and generous character. Hop on a longtail boat at Chao Fa pier and visit Khao Kanab Nam, the unique pair of hills facing each other on the opposite banks of the Krabi River, symbols of the town; or embark on a journey to Koh Klang, an island next to town on the mouth of the river, where you will experience lives lived by the local fishing communities; or charter a boatman for a visit to the mangrove backwaters.

9

top 10 Krabi Activities

Krabi Province is a haven for sun worshippers and pleasure seekers and is also one of the world’s best destinations for activities such as rock-climbing, scuba diving and kayaking. Krabi Magazine gives you our top 10 list of activities to try here in Krabi: Kayaking This is a hugely popular activity in Krabi. The mangroves, caves and of course the beaches, provide plenty of great opportunities for kayaking. The Ao Nang/Railay area is popular as it’s close and convenient but if you’re feeling a little more adventurous, book yourself on a tour to Ao Thalane or Bor Thor in Tarn Boke Koranee National Park. The caves, grottoes and lagoons make for a great day of fun and adventure. Wat Tham Suea A hike to Wat Tham Seua, otherwise known as Tiger Cave Temple is exhausting, exhilarating and ultimately hugely rewarding. Once you’ve climbed the 1,237 steps that lead to the hilltop temple, you’ll be met by stunning views over the surrounding Thai countryside having been transformed into swathes of lush greenery by the monsoon rain. Combine the temple with trips to other destinations like Sa Morakot or visit as a separate Krabi Town day trip and combine with trips to the market. SUNSET STROLL ALONG AO NANG ESPLANADE/NOPPHARAT THARA BEACH Sunsets over Ao Nang and Nopharrat Thara are probably some of the best you are ever likely to see. The monsoon rain brings storm clouds that hang ominously in the sky, creating spectacular sunsets that bathe the bay in a sumptuous light. Walk along the esplanade to get some great views of the longtail boats bobbing on the water, or just sit on a bench and watch as the sky transforms. Evening in the Last Fisherman Bar/Sea Food Restaurants at Noppharat Thara and Ao nang After a sunset stroll there’s no better way to finish off your evening than chatting over a cocktail or two or indulging in some great seafood. If you finish your walk in Ao Nang continue along the road by the police box until you come to the Last Fisherman Bar, one of Ao Nang’s best night-spots. It’s the perfect place to relax and enjoy a drink by the ocean. The seafood restaurants at the other side of Ao Nang Beach or by the very end of Noppharat Thara beach are a must for local fish fare. Rock climbing and Railay Beach Combine a trip to Railay Beach with some rock climbing and serious beach time and then sample some of the local nightlife. Krabi is among the World’s best destinations for climbing. The Railay peninsula is home to the local climbing scene and is considered a mecca for the sport. There are hundreds of bolted routes in the

10

Railay area as well as rock-climbing schools that can provide guides and equipment. Railay, once the sole preserve of backpackers, has become a favourite holiday destination, combining 2 world class beaches, excellent dining and some funky after hours haunts to down a few bottles of local brew. Markets Experiencing the hustle and bustle of a local market is great fun. Krabi and Ao Nang are blessed with some great markets, with Krabi town boasting the largest covered market in southern Thailand. There’s a market operating on any given day of the week selling everything from fruit and vegetables, household items, clothes and shoes, snacks, BBQ meat, Muslim curries and more. Try the Thursday market or Saturday markets in Klong Haeng. Sa Morakot A trip to Sa Morakot or the ‘Crystal Pool’ can be combined with trips to other beauty spots such as the hot springs. The so called ‘Emerald Pool’ is fed by a natural spring and gets its name from the glorious colour of its water. Perfect for swimming, it makes a great day out and a nice break from the beach. The rainy season is a great time to go as there is more water and less people. The best way to visit is on a tour, making it easy to combine it with a trip to nature’s own hot tub – the namtok ron (hot springs) a series of splash pools fed by a natural thermal spring. Koh Hong Archipelago No trip to Krabi or Ao Nang is complete without a trip to Koh Hong, the stunning group of islands lying off the Krabi coast. The beaches of Kong Hong never cease to amaze visitors with their crystal clear water and stunning white sand. The beaches in Ao Nang can become rough and windy in the wet season, but the beaches on the islands lying in the Andaman Sea remain calm and good for swimming. Koh Hong has two glorious beaches, a lagoon and national park land – a real island paradise. Local Nightlife If drinking prodigious amounts of local brew is on your agenda then seek out one of Krabi Town or Ao Nang’s more lively night spots. In Ao Nang, Luna Bar is a popular joint for movers who want to bust some shapes on the dancefloor. Vodka or whiskey buckets are usually the order of the day. If you want to party ‘Thai style’, then head to Centerpoint in Ao Nang or Kansas Saloon in Krabi Town. With lots of whiskey on ice flowing, these places are an experience. Live music, dj sets and semi-clad dancing girls are what you can expect. For a less salubrious night out, try Soi Salai opposite McDonald’s in Ao Nang. This clusters of neon-lit ‘beer-bars’ are often friendly and good fun and many have cable TV and free pool on offer. The next place for entertainment are the bamboo huts opposite Siam Commercial Bank for a relaxed chillout evening. Scuba Diving Some of the world’s finest diving can be found here, with no less than 7 “local” islands right off the Ao Nang coast to explore. Take a day trip to the legendary Phi Phi islands, or discover the stunning Hoh Haa archipelago, or even dive the wreck of the King Cruiser. The Similan islands are reachable by speedboat or liveaboard and demand to be dived if you are here with the intention of getting under the surface. The diversity of the marine life is Krabi’s uniqueness, and it’s hard to beat. Over 200 species of fish have been recorded around Krabi and Ao Nang alone, as well as 80+ types of coral. With water temperatures kissing 30 degrees Celsius, you can dive in T-shirt and shorts if you want to, and many do! Krabi is perfect for first-timers too, and with such a wide selection of dive operators on offer, this could be the time to take the plunge, so to speak.

Asia Responsible Entrepreneurship Awards 2012 Pimalai Resort & Spa have been announced the Winner of The Asia Responsible Entrepreneur Awards 2012 – Southeast Asia under the category of Green Leadership. Since its inception in 2004, Pimalai has been a major participant in the clownfish release project. It is well known that uncontrolled development can have a negative impact on the environment, especially the fragile marine environment. An example of this is the catching of marine species (coral, fish, etc.) for use in commercial and household aquariums. This was, in part, promoted by the very popular Disney studio’s release of the movie, “Finding Nemo”; a hit for the kids…! But a devastating blow to Nemo’s species – the clownfish! Mr. Anurat Tiyaphorn (Pimalai’s Executive Director and owner) originally intended to contribute something back to Lanta island while at the same time to do something special in Honor of H.M The King of Thailand. Therefore he asked for co-operation with the Marine National Park authorities on the island together with the support from Dr. Thon Thamrongnawasawat (Thailand’s most famous marine scientist), the local people, nearby dive centers, volunteer divers and Pimalai staff to support the idea of re-populating Nemos’ species in the seas adjacent to the islands of Koh Haa, a small cluster of limestone islands a short boat cruise from Pimalai. The very first clownfish release was back in 2004, when we released 900 of the tiny creatures into anemones. Unfortunately, they never knew what anemones were or looked like and how they were supposed to be safe within the tendrils of them, so they swiftly swam out of these moving underwater “flowers”, straight into the hungry jaws of predators. This made us quickly realize that such a release project was a far more complicated process than expected.

However, we did not give up. In the following years, we provided food for these predators to distract them from dining on “Nemo”. Still, not many of the clownfish managed to survive. In 2007, we came up with the idea of a two-stage release process using underwater cages which helped increase the survival rate. The survival percentage gradually increased slowly and surely over the years of experimentation and on-going adjustments – from 0% back in 2004, to gradually increase to 1.8% then 5% and eventually reached more than 10% after the 8th year of clownfish release!

12

Year on year the clownfish release project has produced great stories that have been shared with many of our staff, hotel guests, village children whose parents are mostly lowly educated fisherman; shared also with the marine national park authorities, the local dive centers and of course various media with the hope that this clownfish release project will set a good example for all to realize just how difficult it is to preserve nature and how easy it is to simply destroy it. A main objective of releasing these clownfish was to emphasize how human activities can interfere with the very survival of at-risk species such as the clownfish. This project aims to trigger awareness within the local people in a hope that they will stop catching these fish for sale as pets and start to appreciate and respect our valuable, yet fragile, environment. This significant and eco-friendly event also aims to promote the ‘symbiotic’ relationship that exists between the clownfish and anemones and the necessity to keep a balance between fish and plants in the underwater world. This release project, we hope, will set a good example for all involved to realize on how difficult it is to preserve nature and how easy it is, to simply just destroy it. The lessons learned in the clownfish release program have stimulated us to re-establish other kinds of marine life and we are now actively working on the process of re-introducing a population of seahorses in the Koh Haa archipelago. We will keep contributing back to the nature and try to rectify, when we can, the balance that is no longer there. We also want to ensure that our actions are appropriate and of benefit to life on this complex sphere we call “mother earth.

Through education and increasing public awareness it is hoped that projects such as this will encourage others to value what we have and slow down the deterioration of our environment. We believe more hands to heal can make a difference and help to keep our world longer.

Long Live the Queen

A

sk any Thai person what they think is so special about the month of August, you will get the same answer: it’s the month of ‘Mother’s Day’, which is celebrated on Her Majesty Queen Sirikit’s Birthday. This is because Queen Sirikit is regarded by Thais as the ‘Mother of the Nation’. Since 1976, August 12 has not only been an auspicious date for Thai people to celebrate the Birthday of Her Majesty the Queen, but also the day the entire nation takes the opportunity to pay tribute to their loving mothers. On this day, Thai sons and daughters give white jasmine flowers or garlands to their mothers as a symbol of their love. Buddhists go to local temples to offer alms to the monks, a good deed done to pay homage to their passed mothers. Public and private organizations hold many charitable and fund-raising activities for mothers in need of help, as well as visiting those mothers who are being held in prison. Thai people collectively commemorate this day because of Her Majesty the Queen’s benevolence to all walks of Thai life, especially the poor and the needy in rural areas. Many projects have been created under her initiatives and supervision. In 1956 she became the President of the Thai Red Cross Society. Later on, the ‘Sai Jai Thai’ Foundation was founded to help war veterans and their families. In 1976, the Foundation for the Promotion of Supplementary Occupations and Related Techniques (SUPPORT Foundation) was established as an effort to help peasants to earn extra income through rural crafts during the non-cultivating season. This foundation not only improves the quality of life of villagers in remote areas, but also helps preserve their artisanal skills. As many of the foundations are located in the rural areas, some

Queen Sirikit Botanic Garden Thailand’s first botanic garden, Queen Sirikit Botanic Garden (QSBG) was founded in the early nineteen nineties. It is dedicated for botanical research and conservation and received the honorable royal grant to use HM the Queen’s name as the title of the garden in 1994. Located across the forested area of 2,600 acres at the edge of the Doi Suthep-Pui National Park, QSBG now becomes the prime source of Thai valuable plants and biodiversity. Inside the garden, there is an array of precious flora of the country and five main trails for visitors to explore: the Climber Collection Trail, the Rock Garden Trail, the Arboretum Trail, the Thai Orchid Nursery and the Glasshouse Complex. The best time to visit is around November to February. The highlight for this visit is probably the Glasshouse Complex that comprises 4 exhibition conservatories, which shelters various plant species. The glass houses feature the Rainforest Collection, the Aquatic House, the Cacti and Succulents and the Orchid and Fern House. For young plant explorers, a sketchbook and fine drawing pencils would allow them to deeply appreciate the real natural beauty and be able to remember it in details.

also become tourist attractions, helping to provide much-needed income for their communities. So Happy Birthday to Queen Sirikit!

Bangsai Arts and Crafts Center Founded by Her Majesty in 1984, Bangsai Arts and Crafts Center in Ayutthaya is now under supervision of the SUPPPORT Foundation, located on the area of 115 hectare on the east of the Chao Phraya River. It can be easily and pleasurably reached by cruising approximately 2 hours along the river or a one-hour drive from Bangkok. Within its boundary, visitors are given a wide range of the natural and cultural excursions. The Arts and Crafts Village and the Training Center is where the demonstrations, displays and workshops are exhibited, with items shown like handbags, sandals and accessories made of jute and palm leaves, ‘royal-style’ traditional clay dolls, textile products, natural-dyed textiles, weaving, house ware, ceramics and earthenware. Another place to admire is the Royal Lodge, a Thai architectural heritage featuring a group of Thai-style wooden houses. With elegant simplicity, it is the residence of Her Majesty the Queen and other royal members during their visits to the center. Within the same compound, you can stroll around the Freshwater Aquarium and the Bird Park for a look at the biological diversity in Thailand. The center is best for seeing and gaining proper knowledge about Thailand’s sustainable development and conservation without the slyly commercial purpose hidden behind. The Bangsai Arts and Crafts Center is a quintessence of this kind of development. Here villagers are trained to create many types of handicraft products for sale, thus adding up their household incomes and preserving national invaluable arts and crafts.

The Pulse TAT’s “Creative Tourism” Campaign Generates 24 Million Online Visitors

AirAsia to Transfer Flight Operations to Don Mueang Airport from October 1st, 2012

Contestants from Croatia, Taiwan and Australia each have won free week-long holidays in Thailand after participating in an online competition designed to promote the kingdom as a “Creative Tourism” destination.

AirAsia affirms its readiness to transfer all operations to Don Mueang International Airport by October 1st, 2012.

The campaign, bearing the theme “Discover the Other You”, was organised by the Tourism Authority of Thailand in a global effort to boost its Internet and social-media profile, especially among young people, and attract more repeat visitors in the off-peak season months. The campaign generated 24,008,170 views from 119 countries across all the various online media within two months. The Creative Tourism activities video was viewed by over 1.5 million visitors, and the Digital Brochure downloaded by over 3,700 people. The three winners of the “Free 7 Days/6 Nights Trip in Thailand” won round trip air-tickets, accommodation for six nights, meals, and a tour package with a personal guide. The package prize is valued US$8,000, plus a cash prize of US$2,000, for a total value of US$10,000. Mr Suraphon Svetasreni, Governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand, said, “Creative Tourism is an increasingly popular trend that gives visitors a chance to really experience host destinations up close. In an era when people seek out unforgettable special experiences, the ability to “learn-by-doing” about Thai art, culture and traditional practices is truly unique.”

Mr. Tassapon Bijleveld, CEO of Thai AirAsia, said that AirAsia’s decision to return to Don Mueang Airport was carefully assessed and they are confident they can provide passengers with improved service. AirAsia has scheduled October 1st this year as the date when all of its services will be based at Don Mueang Airport. The airline’s flights will retain their FD code and original schedules. Passengers who are affected by the switch to Don Mueang Airport may alter their flights by either choosing another travel date on the same route either 7 days before or after their original travel date, at no additional cost. The campaign was heavily promoted across social media, both in English and Japanese. The content was designed to narrate stories of Thai lifestyle and “Thainess” experiences in order to inspire viewers “to discover the other you” and “have new perspective on life”. The top five countries that joined the online activities were Australia, England, USA, India and Singapore. The top three Creative Tourism activities that potential tourists want to experience are Thai massage, Thai cooking and Thai boxing. Expatriate groups, or foreigners who work in Asia, are most interested in bringing their families to learn about rice farming in Thailand because they want their kids to experience nature and local culture. The top three countries that saw large participation by young people were USA, England and Australia. Young people believe that acquiring new skills and experiences via travel can be listed on their resumes and thus help them get better jobs. Indian visitors - Big Spenders for Krabi? Kasikorn Research Centre in its latest tourism forecast estimated 1.07 million Indian tourists will visit Thailand this year representing a 20% on last year.

World’s first Cartoon Network-themed water park to open in Thailand Cartoon Network is planning to build a large-scale water park on the Eastern Seaboard of Thailand, in the municipality of Bang Saray, located only 15 minutes away from Pattaya, one of the most popular beaches in Thailand and only 90 minutes away from the country’s capital Bangkok, it was confirmed last week. Scheduled to open in early 2013, the water park will recreate the Amazon rainforest while including some of the network’s most popular animated series and cartoon heroes such as Ben 10, The Powerpuff Girls, Johnny Bravo and The Amazing World of Gumball. The creation of the theme park in Thailand, the first for Cartoon Network, will add to the variety of attractions available in a country which is benefitting from rising levels of tourism in Asia. According to the Finance Ministry of Thailand, in 2011 the country welcomed more than 19 million tourists, with a rise in number of visitors from China, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Vietnam and Cambodia. The park will include several activities for both adults and children. Thrill-seekers are catered for by the huge vertical drop while younger kids can take in more tranquil attractions such as a giant wave-pool, a winding adventure river, speed-racing slides and raft rides. Organizers are aiming to attract up to 800,000 local and foreigner visitors a year. A team of designers is working in conjunction with Amazon Falls Co. Ltd, a resort and attractions developer firm in Thailand, on the US$32 million project.

It claims revenue could reach Bt37,000 million increasing 21.9% on last year’s performance. The centre said the Indian market continues to grow from a base of 135,000 visits in 1997 to 892,000 visits in 2011. It has grown consistently at around 15% per year. Tourism revenue has improved from Bt6,000 million in 1997 to Bt30,000 million last year. The research centre said a recent survey indicated Thailand was now the top destination in Asia ahead of Singapore and Malaysia. Shopping topped the list of favourite activities and the target items were televisions, digital cameras and electrical appliances. Indian tourists top the meeting and incentive arrivals ahead of China, Singapore, Japan and Malaysia. There are various convention venues in Thailand that can support the market in Bangkok, Pattaya, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Khon Kaen and Ubon Ratchathani. For the weddings and honeymoons market, the centre advised the state and private sector to set up wedding venues besides Bangkok possibly developing the market in Chiang Mai, Phuket, Krabi, Samui and Nakhon Ratchasima as each wedding event could generate income of around Bt10 to Bt20 million. The golf market was also growing alongside other niche markets such as long stay, medical and film business, but there was a need to strengthen standards and quality in these areas to avoid pitfalls.

Transport Tips First of all - Welcome! Glad you made it to our little piece of Paradise here in the South of Thailand. We have no doubt that you are in for one of the best experiences of your life during your stay with us, with so much to do and see. But how do you get where you want to go? While it might seem a little off-putting, especially if you are new to Thailand - travelling here is dead easy. One of the best countries for getting around, I’d say - and you’ll soon see what I mean. There are busses, taxis, tuk-tuks, motorcycles, minivans, coaches, scooters, sawng-thaws, longtails, speedboats and more all awaiting you with a smile. What can be tricky sometimes is knowing how much a trip costs, where to buy your tickets and how long a journey should take - things that are starting to become more obvious now than they were before.

Busses Over the past few months, there have been a number of new bus stops that have been cropping up all over Ao Nang and Krabi. These are the stops for 2 different routes that make getting from A to B a whole lot easier than it used to be around here - I can tell you. That said - we thought we would put together some info on just that to make your time here as hassle-free as it can be.

From Krabi Airport

Nice, clean, air-con cars are available to take you anywhere you want to go and can carry up to 4 people. Or you can buy a seat in a minivan for less, but as it can take up to 10 people you may have to wait until they fill it.

Air-Con Bus

There is now a regular shuttle bus that runs between the airport and popular destinations like those mentioned above. It also stops at piers where ferries leave for places like Railay and Tonsai. This can be a great option if you are on a budget, but can take a while to get to where you want to go.

First of all - they’re hard to miss being bright red and with the words “Bus Stop” printed in large white letters on the side. Inside the shelter, you will find a map of the area with 2 distinct routes outlined - a red one and a green one. Red Route 8415 (Big Bus) The red route is the large airport coach that leaves the Krabi International Airport after every flight now, making it’s way to Ao Nang beach and Noppharathara beach. It says that the first bus leaves at 7am (from the airport, presumably) and then every hour afer that until 6:00pm. Price = ฿150 per person Green Route 8399 (Tuk Tuk-Style) The green route make the circuit between Krabi town, Noppharathara beach, Ao Nang beach and the Shell Cemetery which lies a few kilometers outside of Ao Nang. These are not really “busses” as you might know them - but more like small pickup trucks. A white one and a bright red one with 2 benches in the back to sit on. Inside, look around for a doorbell-style button that you press when you want to get off. These busses start at 6:30am an pass by every 15 minutes until 7pm, so you shouldn’t have to wait for long. Prices = Depends on how far you want to go, but from Krabi to Ao Nang expect to pay ฿50

Try Your Thai Krabi is well-used to foreigners and most of the Thai people that deal with tourists on a daily basis will have a smattering of English to get by. The employees at your resort, for example. But if you want to try out a little of their own language, you will be rewarded by even bigger smiles and even the odd giggle. The Thais really do appreciate you making an effort to speak their language and just the odd word here and there can make all the difference in your relationships with them.

It can be a daunting language to speak as it has 5 separate tones that can change the meaning of the word you are speaking. But don’t worry about that for now - if you just say the words, they’ll get the message!

Numbers 1 - Noong 2 - Song 3 - Sam 4 - See 5 - Haa 6 - Hock 7 - Jet 8 - Ped 9 - Khao 10 - Sip

! !

One very important think to remember is that male speakers should always end each statement or sentence with the word “Krap”. Female speakers end with “Kaa”. Hello (male speaker).......................................................“Sawadee Krap”

Is that tasty?..............................................................................“A Roy Mai?

Hello (female speaker).................................................... “Sawadee Kaa”

Hot (Temperature)........................................................................... “Rawn”

How are you?................................................................. “Sabai Dee Mai?”

Cold...........................................................................................................“Yen”

I’m fine......................................................................................... “Sabai Dee”

Water.....................................................................................................“Naam”

How much is this?...........................................................“A Nee Tao Rai?”

Where is the restroom/toilet?.................“Hong Naam Yoo Tee Nai?

What is this?..............................................................................“Nee a Rai?”

Can I have the bill/check?.......................................................“Kep Tang”

Yes............................................................................................................ “Chai”

Where are you going?..................................................................“Pai Nai?

No.................................................................................................... “Mai Chai”

See you soon........................................................................“Pop Gan Mai”

Sorry/Excuse me......................................................................... “Kor Toht” I can’t speak Thai........................................... “Poot Passa Thai Mai Dai” Can you speak English?.............“Khun Poot Passa Angrit Dai Mai?”

And the one that rules them all - the 3 words that every Thai lives by and that can teach us stress-monkeys a thing or two about life…

I don’t understand.............................................................. “Mai Khao Jai” Do you understand?..........................................................“Khao Jai Mai?

It doesn’t matter

Help!.................................................................................. “Chooey Dooey!”

No big deal

Spicy...........................................................................................................“Pet”

Don’t worry about it

Not spicy.......................................................................................... “Mai Pet”

Never mind

“Mai Pen Rai”

Chicken-on-a-Stick With Sticky Rice (Kow Niaw Gai Yang) Sounds sticky, yes? And it is. Good old Chicken-on-a-stick is exactly what it says on the tin. It’s impossible to walk down any road in Thailand without coming across a vendor selling this. You can smell it before you see it. We are talking about a piece of juicy chicken on the bone, marinated in spices to give it a yellow/orange colour. The chicken is then placed in-between a thin stick of bamboo that has been split down the middle and fastened at the end with a piece of wire. This is then cooked over a coal grill usually attached to the back of the vendor’s Tuk-Tuk, and there it waits for people like us here at Krabi Magazine to pass by and fall upon it like we haven’t eaten in a month. If you want to do it properly and look like a seasoned pro, choose your chicken piece from the pile and place it back over the coals to warm it up a little by jamming the tip of it into the grid, so it sits up at an angle. This will grant you impressive looks from the Thais, while you order the best accompaniment to this amazing meal - sticky rice. Known in Thai as “Kow Niaw”, this is a kind of rice that is eaten a lot in the northern parts of Thailand, like the Isaan province. As it’s name suggest, it’s stickier than the usual white rice you get in restaurants. So much so, that you don’t need forks or spoons to eat it - just your fingers. The ultimate street food, no? The chicken, now warmed through, will be plucked from the grill by the vendor and wrapped in a banana leaf for you, before placing both chicken and sticky rice in a bag for you to take away. They will often throw in another little bag of sweet chilli sauce for you to dip the chicken and rice into, which only serve to make your lunch all the more delicious. All that’s left for you to do is devour with gusto. Many street vendors have a few plastic chairs nearby under the shade of a tree for you to sit and enjoy their wares. With the chicken going for about ฿50 (it does depend on the size - always ask before you select your piece) and the sticky rice

Insider Tip Look out for a coloured plastic bucket somewhere on on the vendor’s stall - this is your cue that sticky rice is available. It’s never on the menu - as far as I know - so you need to ask for it

20

between ฿5 and ฿15, the grand total of this month’s meal should be around ฿60. So it’s cheap, filling, tasty, authentic and fast. What more could you ask for? Well, even asking for it is a breeze as you can just point at the chicken or pick it from the pile to warm yourself.

If you want to try your Thai, this is what you say if you’re a guy…

“Kor Kow Niaw Gai Yang Krap” please

sticky rice

BBQ chicken

And if you’re a lady, the same but the last word is different…

“Kor Kow Niaw Gai Yang Kaa” To ask how much your chicken piece costs, point at it and say,

“A Nee Tao Rai Krap/Kaa” this

how much?

฿50 = “Haa Sip Baht” ฿60 = “Hock Sip Baht”

And there you have it - lunch in a flash. Try it and see for yourself how we here at KM towers manage to live on this 3-4 times per week. You’ll not regret it, I assure you….

Yoga at One with Nature Marina Yoga and Reiki is located just outside of Aonang in an idyllic setting, surrounded by nature and overlooking Krabi’s majestic scenery. What makes Marina Yoga and Reiki unique amongst the growing number of yoga studios in the area is their commitment to upholding integrity and the essence of yoga. Many people are drawn to “yoga asana” (the opening and training of the physical body) because of its immediate feel-good effects. What most people aren’t aware of is the deeper meaning behind these often challenging exercises; namely that training the body is a tool for training the mind to find greater awareness, strength and flexibility in all endeavors. The Teachers cultivate this awareness by providing personal attention; understanding that each body is different and no one is superior, reminding each student the importance of selfobservation without judgment. Here there is a class level and style for everyone. If you’re unsure where to begin, Marina is happy to guide you. For thousands of years in India, yogis - who are salutary beings by nature - have congregated with other yogis and their gurus to acquire and share sacred knowledge. In modern times, the yoga studio has often taken the place of these ashrams. In keeping with the ancient tradition, Marina Yoga is more than just a place to sweat (never fret, sweat junkies, there are classes for you!),its also a

meeting place; a community where you are considered a student as well as a teacher. Thanks to smaller class sizes, you can expect teachers to know your name after just one class. It’s also likely that if you desire to learn a little bit of yoga philosophy, you can strike up a conservation after class and leave feeling awake with wisdom. You may also attend special events at the studio featuring visiting teachers or gurus, which are always open to the public. Even if you’re a seasoned yogi or yogini travelling from the west, you’ve probably been attending classes surrounded by four walls and glass windows. The teachings contained within the Vedas, the ancient texts where we have drawn much of our present knowledge of yoga, encourage yogis to seek oneness with nature. At Marina Yoga open-air studio, you can feel the gentle breeze against your skin as you are immersed in the subtle sounds of nature all around you. We also offer Kids yoga classes as well as 200 hr teacher training programs, which can be catered to individual needs. Marina Yoga is teaching in Thai, English and German . If you’re ready to awaken your inner yogi, try a class at Marina Yoga. You can contact Marina via email at yoga.krabi@gmail.com or call her at +66 87 898 1506. She can help you find a class and organize easy transportation. See you on the mat! Namaste

Child’s play Outreach at Krabi Special Education Centre

For Projects Abroad, our monthly outreach is one of the hands-down highlights of the month.

By Janrumpai Chaisompongpan

and students. For the past 5 years, our physiotherapy and occupational therapy volunteers have been assisting the centre in the treatment process.

Volunteers and staff are all looking forward to this collaboration between the Conservation and Community teams; it is a chance to do something worthwhile and also experience something different. Our previous outreaches include a vast variety of activities, such as beach cleanups, tree planting, school painting and even organising a children’s day event. Following the success of the volunteer’s puppet show at our care placement in Phuket and the previous outreach at the children ward in Krabi Hospital, we decided to continue to light smiles on the children’s faces by dedicating this June outreach for special needs children in Krabi town. The designated place was Krabi Special Education Centre, which is a primary school for children with all types of disabilities. Apart from providing the general education for their students, another important task is to ensure that the children will learn life skills and will be able to live as independently as possible. Thus, the centre also provides the treatments for both outpatients

For this outreach we planned to perform, give out donations and sponsor the kids’ lunch. The Community team settled with the idea of a puppet show, while the Conservation team decided to perform a play. Realising the nature and needs of this place, Vishal, our Social Media Manager, also assigned the volunteers to buy toys and educational materials that would help with dexterity and muscle building. After a day at school and care centre, Community volunteers gathered at the office to cut out papers, make puppets and rehearse for the performances. We adopted the story of “3 Little Pigs” but changed the main characters from pigs to rabbits to better suit the local Muslim area! The Conservation volunteers also devoted their afternoons to practice the “Little Red Riding Hood” play. On the day, Friday 8th, all volunteers first met at Community office for a debriefing. During this week, Projects Abroad had a film crew from U.S.A. coming to film a pilot documentary about volunteering abroad, so they came along as well. All were informed about the nature of Krabi Special Education Centre, the dos and don’ts, and the schedule of the day. On top of that, everyone practised singing “Old McDonald” and “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” with ukuleles. (These two songs are among a very few 2-3 chords song we found!)

A group of 27 volunteers and 10 staff (plus the 2 from the filming team) arrived at the Krabi Special Education Centre around 10 a.m. The teachers greeted us and led us into one room, which they normally use as classroom for autistic children. We started off by setting up our “stage”, then after about 5 minutes, about 20 children came rushing in! Even though some of them were in wheelchairs and couldn’t move into the room so fast, we could certainly see their anticipation. It was a great relief seeing that the students were not afraid of us- a big bunch of new faces.

22

After a short familiarising time, the kids were guided to sit and play with some of our volunteers who were not part of the backstage. As we did not have any physiotherapy or occupational therapy volunteers at this point, it meant that this was the first time for all volunteers at the Special Education Centre. There were also a few first-timers among the staff, too. However, everyone seemed pretty much at ease with one another; good vibes were in the air. We had one very hyper boy, though; he always walked back and forth and tried to have a sneak peek behind our show “curtain” and refused to sit down. Some volunteers were fascinated by this boy and were actually thinking about giving him a role.

Our show started off with the usual trick, “If You’re Happy” song to get the kids attention. Then, we proceeded to sing with ukuleles the 2 songs we rehearsed earlier back at the office. It was indeed a heartwarming sight to see volunteers spreading out to every corner of the room singing to and “with” the kids. Once the Conservation volunteers signal their readiness, Little Red Riding Hood came out to meet the children in full costume. Although the play was very animated, we had two narrators for clarity: one in English and one in Thai. To further amuse the kids, everyone in the room also helped to make sound effects when the wolf appeared.

Following the play was the puppet show from Community volunteers. The 3 little rabbits took turn to build their house with different songs in the background. The students were clapping hands and blew together with the wolf when he was attempting to destroy the houses. They surely had fun with our activities and shows. Right after that, volunteers handed over the stuffs they bought to the teachers. Ingrid, the Conservation Director, gave a thank you speech to the placement and also to the volunteers for this very special day. Then, time went by quickly and it was lunch. Volunteers helped handed the plate to the children and sat with them. We all ate after the kids were done and bid us farewell. Some volunteers came to us and ask if it would be ok for them to return to the centre to give more gifts and spend some times with these lovely kids. Some wanted to extend the day a bit longer. The teachers were also very happy that we organised such an event for their students. The impact was apparent, even though they are children with special needs. We saw giggles, laughs and smiles on everyone faces. This outreach has yet again confirmed with us that love, care and kindness always reach to the heart of the people, special needs or not. Our mission was accomplished.

Muay Thai Fun, Fitness, Self Defense & Weight Loss

I have learned so much here and I try to give something back to Thailand for sharing their national sport of Muay Thai with us foreigners. Muay Thai has made me 49 years young this year and I still love to get into the Ring! Anyone can do this Sport, especially for fitness, health, weight loss, self defense and yes – fighting. Muay Thai is my “Fountain of Youth”. Many all over the world are taking part in this exciting sport from ages 6 to 60 and above and we all are encouraged by the National Thai Fighters and Trainers. There are three main Martial Arts in the world: “Kung Fu” from China, “Karate” from Japan and “Tae Kwon Do” from Korea. They are more on the “artistic” side of fight training and can be described as a “closed book” style or system; meaning you must learn from the Master of the Art just like he teaches it. Muay Thai is more of a Sport and a fighting style or system. When any of the Martial Arts are put into the Ring with Muay Thai, Muay Thai usually wins by KO – Knock Out . Muay Thai is an “open book” meaning you learn the basic five areas of Muay Thai, then according to your body type and personality you shape Muay Thai into your own personal style or system. These five areas consist of the following: • The Fists – Boxing. This is similar to most Boxing Sports but Muay Thai does not “Bob and Weave” and the fighters keep their heads held high - for good reason. If a Thai fighter sees his opponent duck low, he will simply knee him in the face. • The Elbows. Known in the sport as the “Knives of Muay Thai” as they draw the most blood during fights. • The Knees. They are the hardest combat strike in all Martial Arts. A medium fighter can generate the same force as a small car running into a wall! Raja 2 Stadium’s #1 method of knock out. • The Clinch. This is a very complex system of stand-up wrestling and the Champions in Muay Thai all have their own personal moves that can quickly throw an average person to the ground. • The fifth and final area is the Kick. They can strike straight, swing around, fly up and buck back. The legs are a very powerful part of the human body and when they are conditioned into hard baseball bats they are an amazing weapon in fighting. Muay Thai as a Ring Sport is a very intense activity, making it the reason it is a “Fun Fitness – Self Defense – Weight Loss Workout.” Many people all over the world are getting involved in the sport, simply as it produces results.

Sawasdee krap … Hello this is Khru “Doc” and welcome to Krabi the “Paradise of Thailand”. I am a Muay Thai teacher certified in Thailand, but I first ran my own camp in California, USA for 14 years before relocating here. Many Muay Thai fights are won by simple conditioning alone. What I mean is if an older Thai champion with many years of experience and skill comes against a younger opponent, the younger conditioned fighter will more than likely win. This happens because the younger fighter will put pressure on the older fighter and simply tire him out. It does not matter how much skill you have when you are tired because your ability to use it becomes drastically reduced. Muay Thai training has many conditioning drills and they are “Fun Fitness – Self Defense – Weight Loss” exercises which can be deceptively effective! Many peopple when trying out the workouts for the first time are shocked at how sore they can feel the next day - a good sign that it’s working! Muay Thai training sessions can burn up to 1000 calories and because they have five areas of techniques, the combinations of which are seemingly endless and it gives a person a lifelong goal of learning and training. This makes Muay Thai the World Champion in the Ring and in many areas of fitness and health.

You can do it too! Would you like to try Muay Thai? We would love to give you a lesson in Muay Thai but I will give you this warning. Once you try Muay Thai you will be hooked for life and I am a great example of that. Phra JAO uay phra pon krap … God bless you from Krabi, Khru “Doc”.

If you want to learn more about Muay Thai or even take a lesson, please feel free to contact Khru “Doc”. DocThailand@gmail.com – Cell 087-810-2177

Into the Blue I f you happen to be a scuba diver and are here on holiday to indulge in your passion, then you are in the right place. Here at Krabi Magazine, we love the ocean. Most of us here at KM towers are keen divers with a lot of experience working as Divemasters here in Krabi, Phi Phi, Similan islands, and beyond into other parts of Asia. We feel that diving is an integral part of what makes Krabi special, so we decided to create a new section in the magazine dedicated just to this - the sport that we love! What we want to do is tell you, our readers, all about the diving here in the Krabi region and beyond - Ao Nang, Krabi, Phi Phi, Koh Lanta, Phuket and the (drool) Similan Islands, from our own experiences - rather than generic and sometimes impersonal info you can sometimes be presented with. No, that’s not our style. We’ve been there, done that and want to do it again - so we want to tell you what lies out there, how to dive the sites, what to look for when you get there and how to get the best out of your time under the waves.

Diving in Krabi The great part about diving around the Krabi region is that its pretty much a year-round activity. The best months are from November to April, as this is when the seas are calmer, the visibility better and the rain showers few and far between - but green-season diving has its merits too - we can assure you. The number one being there are less divers out there on the boats and in the water - a huge difference from the crowds that descend in the peak season months. You will also find that the pries are (usually) cheaper at this time of the year too, which is never a bad thing indeed. The dive sites here are tailor-made for beginners and families, with the maximum depth maxing out at 30 meters at most sites around the Phi Phi islands - and that’s with your nose in the sand. Around Ao Nang, you’re looking at an average depth of approximately 15 meters - perfect for less experienced divers and snorkellers alike. The islands are a natural barrier to the strong ocean currents too, so the water movement is generally calmer than some places (although we’ve had our moments!)

D

uring the green season if the weather is particularly bad, the sea conditions can sometimes make trips from Ao Nang, Krabi and Railay to the Phi Phi islands a bad idea and dive operators can change their plans at the last minute according to the weather. But this rarely means the cancellation of the dive - as the fallback sites are known as the “local islands”, which are diveable in all but a hurricane.

With so many sites that include wrecks, caves, swim-throughs, pinnacles, coral gardens and much more, we have a lot of exploring to do! From the mighty whale shark right down to the tiniest shrimp - we have insights, stories and many, many full-colour photographs and video taken by us of the amazing and beautiful marine life that resides here.

27

Local Islands These local islands consist of 7 rocky limestone karsts - the ones you can see dotting the horizon as you look out from Ao Nang beach. They are known as Koh Si, Koh Haa, Koh Yawasam, Koh Yawabon, Mae Urai, Koh Talu and Koh Dor and all are great for diving and snorkelling. The maximum depth around here is about 25m, with the average in a dive being 15 - 18m. The islands are relatively small (when compared to Phi Phi), so in a lot of cases it’s possible to dive around them completely. Over 200 species of fish have been documented in and around these islands, as well as around 80 varieties of coral. Huge schools of fish, tiny nudibranches, and even the odd passing whale shark have all been spotted here - all less than 45 minutes boat ride away from Ao Nang. If you are thinking about learning how to dive here, these are the places your instructor will most likely take you in the beginning, as they are a perfect introduction to the underwater world. Phi Phi Islands Legends in their own lifetime, the world-famous Phi Phi Islands have become one of the most popular tourist destinations in Thailand. Catapulted to stardom after the 2000 film “The Beach” hit the cinemas, Phi Phi has become a haven for travellers all looking for that unique Thailand vibe the islands encapsulate. Phi Phi Don is the larger of the islands and the one that has all the bars resorts restaurants and dive centers. Phi Phi Ley is it’s smaller sister that is protected under the regulations of the Marine Park that it’s part of - so no bars, resorts or much of anything goes on here - which is a good thing too as it keeps the island just as nature intended it to be. There are also a couple more islands that are part of the archipelago, and these are known as the “cream of the crop” amongst the dive sites here. Koh Bida Nok and Koh Bida Nai lie off the very southernmost tip of Phi Phi Ley and are 2 relatively unassuming towers of limestone jutting up from the sea. But once you step off that dive deck and descend into the blue, you are transported to another world. “The Bidas”, as they are known, have some of the largest soft corals, the best visibility and the sheer variety of marine life that it makes them two of the most popular sites in the Phi Phi area.

Apart from the Bidas, Phi Phi offers up over 15 different sites to explore, with residents including many hawksbill turtles, moray eels, snappers, rays, black tip reef sharks, tiny nudibranches, scorpionfish and even the transient whale shark. The waters are a beautiful emerald green, with the visibility ranging from 5 - 25 meters on average. We’re not talking mega-viz here, but the warm water, imposing rock formations, tropical setting and sheer abundance of marine life make diving the Phi Phi islands an experience never to forget.

28

Phuket If you are a more experienced diver and fancy something a little more challenging, then you are well catered for with the enticingly named “Superday”. This is a 3 dive day (regular days have 2 dives) that takes in 3 spectacular sites all with their own unique story. The first dive is on the King Cruiser Wreck - a passenger ferry that struck nearby Anemone Reef and sank a short distance away in 2007. The shipwreck now lies 32 meters down on the sea floor, and is the only wreck in the vicinity at the moment that attracts divers. The second dive is usually Anemone Reef itself - the cause of all the trouble! Like it’s name suggests, it’s a reef festooned with an uncountable number of sea anemones and their clownfish

sharks in attendance - swimming languidly around the divers and resting peacefully on the sandy bottom. Maximum depth here is around 22 meters.

archipelago and they are simply beautiful. With 5 islands crowding in on each other, there is a crystal-clear lagoon in the middle that’s sheltered from the open ocean and perfect for snorkellers and those learning to dive.

be dived by those with experience. These are the deepest dives around as they drop off to somewhere around 70 meters - so keep your eye on your depth gauge. You will need several more eyes too, ones to watch the stunning reef for tiny critters, a few more to scan away from the reef and into the blue for the whale sharks and another couple to glance upwards now and again to try and catch sight of the manta rays that circle overhead. Amazing sites that demand to be dived. Bring extra eyes. I’m not even scratching the surface here of what you can experience under the waves in the south of Thailand. You could dive every day for a month and not get bored with what you can see. This is just a brief overview of what Krabi and the surrounding area can offer you as a visitor here, and there will be a lot more to come in the months that follow.

Each of the islands has it’s own character and uniqueness that means hundreds of dives in and around here are required to fully appreciate everything they have to offer. My personal favourite (at the moment) has to be Koh Haa Yai with it’s cave. A huge opening that lets in enough light to see by (and keep the jitters at bay) leads into an enormous cave. Swimming upwards towards the top there is a hole in the wall, through which you can pass and down into another cave. Caves aplenty and it’s great fun! And this is only one of them... As well as Koh Haa, there are the twins of Hin Daeng and Hin Muang to contend with. These have been known for years as the best dive sites outside of the Similan islands, and you will see why.

Similar to Anemone Reef in terms of what you can expect to see here, with the added bonus of a mini-drift dive if the currents are strong enough. It’s possible to drift from the first to the second and even the third pinnacle if you know where you’re going. It’s also possible to drift to Vietnam if you don’t.

As these dive sites are in the open ocean and have no protection from the islands of Phi Phi, currents can be very strong and visibility pretty bad if the weather has been the same. The relatively deeper water also makes this day for experienced divers only - but for those that qualify, it’s not called “Superday” for nothing... Lanta The islands of Koh Lanta a perfectly situated for reaching some incredible dive sites. As well as being close enough to reach Phi Phi, their “local islands” are the Koh Haa

We will be looking at our favourite dive sites in more depth (sorry) with maps, what to look for, how to dive them and the operators to go with to ensure your safety and enjoyment for your day. We’ll also be looking into the people involved in the diving industry around here as there are a few interesting characters with tales to tell!

residents. There are some stunning soft corals here as well as huge swirling schools of snapper and barracuda to make your head spin. As it’s a submerged pinnacle, the dive plan is usually to descend to the bottom at 25 meters and spiral your way around it until reaching the 5 meter mark for your safety stop. This makes it very easy to navigate, but it also means that there can be a heck of a lot of divers in the same place at the same time. The third dive of the day belongs to Shark Point. This site consists of 3 separate, submerged pinnacles with resident leopard

To compliment all if this, we shall also be printing some of our favourite underwater photos from the years we have been diving around here - and asking you to send us in your own. So watch this space and, until next month - happy diving!

Frequently visited by whale sharks and manta rays, these submerged reefs are blasted by ripping currents and are only to

Road Trippin’

O

History is littered with the tales of those that set out on journeys to test he limits of their own endurance. The limits of their will, stamina and friendship. These stories are just the ones that we here at KM towers love to hear about - especially if they involve people from around here that we know.

n June 23rd this year, 5 friends decided to drive a 3-wheeled tuk tuk all the way from Bangkok back here to Krabi. There was a method to this apparent madness, as one of the 4 was purchasing the tuk tuk for his resort - and this seemed like a much more fun way to get it back than having it shipped! The four in the team consisted of Mr. Svein, the Managing Director of the Ao Nang Baan Sawaan Resort; Inge from Krabi Apartment, Gidi from Carnivore Steak and Grill, Stefan, the C.E.O. of Kontiki diving and Mr. Terje, a long-time Ao Nang visitor who decided to fly in from Norway to join in. This is their account of our epic journey from Bangkok to Krabi in a tuk tuk... The days before the start of the journey where pretty hectic as we had to organize details such as roping a few more companies to sponsor us on our journey. Driving a tuk tuk is normally not allowed for foreigners, so some well-needed help from Sayaan, the owner of the KR Bar in Centerpoint, was called in and he spoke to one of his contacts in Bangkok to arrange a “pass partout” from the place where we had to pick up the tuk-tuk (Chonburi, near Pattaya) to all the way down past Hua Hin. Gus from Krabi Consultants kindly organized a document from Khun Chuan (the chairman of the foundation) that explained to anyone who might stop us during our trip what we were doing and asking them for our support. When we arrived at the factory in Bangkok and saw out mode of transport for the next 4 days, we looked at each other and swore to never again make such decisions after a few beers. The staff and manager at the factory were very surprised to hear with kind of idiot plan these 5 guys had come up with, and they looked on in obvious bewilderment. We hopped in, Gidi got behind the steering wheel and started

30

driving down towards the main road. At least 2 lanes of each road where packed with 25 meter long trucks, each truck with 28 screaming wheels (each wheel is almost bigger than the entire tuk-tuk) and behind the wheels of those trucks where some drivers who hadn’t slept for the past 3 days. Gidi was sweating a lot - and not because of the heat... After 20 minutes following the flow of mammoth traffic we were starting to settle into it a little more, and become more comfortable with it - if “comfortable” was the word… We were now heading towards one of the worst traffic systems in the world - Bangkok. Imagine the sight if you can of hundreds of trucks and one small tuk tuk with 5 sweating “farangs” inside, all charging their way towards Bangkok. The reactions the team got from people passing by were great; many did read the banner on the side that told of our charity reasons and honked their horns in support. As the traffic got more intense, we made it to about 20 km from downtown Bangkok. The highway ended and we needed a guide to show us the way through Bangkok. Stopping a puzzled-looking taxi driver and explaining what our intentions were, he agreed to guide us through. The cabby did a great job and we were soon following him into small alleys, and driving madly to try to keep up with him. Soon enough we made it to the one and only bridge that could take us over the mighty Choa Praya river.

the day’s exertions and we decided that some serious re-hydration was needed to bring our liquid levels back to normal. After a day of rest, we hopped back in to our ride and sped our way towards Chumpon - 330 km away. During one stop, Stefan’s face had turned a weird whitish-yellowgreen and this was a signal that something he ate that morning was not in-sync with his body. He was suffering and the rest of the group where very concerned; would this bring complications to our onward journey? Luckily, all turned out well and after a somewhat boring trip we made it to Chumpon city. The vehicle had now 635 km on its clock! The next day started early and by 9.30am the tuk-tuk was screaming its way towards it’s new home town of Ao Nang.

Despite all our permissions and permits we had painstakingly acquired, we were denied access to the bridge. Not to be outdone by this petty bureaucracy, the cab-driver took us to a nearby ferry to cross the river, the first and (hopefully!) the last river crossing on a ferry the tuk tuk would be making in it’s life. After 1.5 hours of this, we were back on the highway again and desperate to make up for lost time. 5 hours and 200 km later, Inge took over the wheel to drive the last section of the trip for Day 1. Gidi was too tired; maybe it was because of the jet-leg he sustained during our Krabi-Bangkok flight… We soon came across a large police check, which was not a good sign for us. The first officer peered inside at 5 middle-aged guys cramped in a small tuk-tuk and stared blankly at Inge, the white guy behind the wheel. Stunned, he waved us through. The second officer 100 meters further down the road almost swallowed his whistle and got on his walkie talkie, but the 3rd police officer standing further down the road got the message to late and Inge speeded up the tuk tuk, passing him by. Around 6.30pm we made it to our first planned stop - Hua Hin. The Tuk Tuk already had 320 km on the clock at the end of it’s first day outside the factory - not bad going! There was a pleasant surprise for the group as the Bosma family were there to welcome the daredevils to Hua Hin. Jitze Bosma works at the Dutch Embassy, and the 3 Norwegians in the tuk-tuk where a bit disappointed as no one of our embassy was there to greet us! A refreshing shower cleaned our bodies of the dirt collected from driving 6 hours through Bangkok. All of us were very thirsty from

It was a long trip and the road between Chumpon and Surratthani was in bad condition, making it much more of a challenge to actually get there! After passing Surratthani, we had just another 130 km ahead of us before we would reach Krabi. Around 4.30pm the tuk-tuk group made it to the building of the Sripong Foundation in Krabi town, where there just happened to be a board of education function in progress that included 3 school-busses of children who were very surprised by seeing 5 large “Farangs” in a very small Tuk Tuk! The best part of our arrival was that our wives and friends came to welcome us all back home. Mr. Band (Ao Nang’s sheriff ) and his police-colleagues also turned up to give us a police-escort back into Ao Nang. The last stop would be the Krabi resort in Ao Nang, were Khun Chuan the chairman of the foundation, welcomed us back home. After all the pictures were taken, he treated us to a great “welcomeback” feast with beers, Japanese food and other delicious snacks. Altogether, the tuk tuk clocked up 1013 km. After taking off the 12 which were on the teller when we got the vehicle, it turned out that our journey had been exactly 1001 km with only a few minor breakdowns. As each kilometer we travelled was worth 200 Baht to us in sponsorship money, the grand total raised at the end of our journey was an incredible 200,000 Baht for the foundation! The tuk-tuk gang would like to thank the following people for without us this trip would not have been possible! Our beloved partners (for letting us feel young again); Khun Chuan; Robert Reynolds; Sayaan Yuthkoon (for all the police affairs); Mr. Band; CEO’s Krabi Apartment; Khun Wor the manager at Krabi Apartment for organizing so many things; Khun Tik for the help with the banners; Bosma family for our support in Hua Hin; Tiger Brewery; and last, but not least, all of our sponsors. Meet the Locals In this, the first of a series of chats with long-term residents of the Krabi region, we sit down for a quick coffee with the owner and founder of one of the most well - known eateries in Ao Nang. Carnivore Steak and Grill is renowned amongst local ex-pats and long-term visitors as being the place to go for the best steaks in town. Gidi prepares us a couple of strong espressos as we sit at Carnivore’s polished wooden bar and chew the fat - so to speak.

KM: Gidi, you are something of an institution here in Ao Nang. How long have you been here? G: Actually, on the 11th of July I will have been in Ao Nang for 11 years! Back in 2002 I returned one more time to the Netherlands for a while and that was the last intercontinental flight I made. KM: What made you come here to Thailand in the first place? G: I was getting restless back home and had already been thinking for a long time to leave my home country. After visiting Thailand for the second time, I decided to make the change and start a new life here in Ao Nang. At that time, Ao Nang was still a small village where tourism was just starting to develop - very different from what you see here today. I have to say, Ao Nang appealed to me more then than it does now, but it is still a nice place to be. KM: Big changes, indeed. What were you doing in your life before you arrived here? G: After graduating from hotel school in Belgium, I worked for about 2 years in a restaurant as the chef. After that, I took the position of restaurant manager. After those 2 years, I bought a pub and expanded it into a party center. During the weekends I would hold many company events, weddings and birthday parties. I ran this business for exactly 6 years before deciding to sell up and make the move to Thailand. KM: It can’t be all work and no play though. What do you like to do on your days off? G: I don’t have too many of those! During high season we all work for 6 months with no days off. Keeping Carnivore running is very important for me and leaving it on its own makes me feel not to comfortable.

32

But if I do take a day off I like to spend it with my wife and friends; which mostly then ends up in a bar. KM: As a resident here myself, I can see the attraction with staying in a place like this. What do you like most about living here. G: Initially it was the climate, to meet different people, the stress-free way of living... Living and especially working here in the beginning was very tough, and not as I expected it to be like at all. Now though, after being here for a few years and being able to communicate and understand the Thai language, life is much more relaxed. The climate is still good, just as long as it not to hot! KM: I hear you on that one. I like the heat too, but I have my limits! What’s your favourite time of the year? G: This time - the green season. This is the time when I can relax with my friends who either live here or who come here on holiday.

KM: I know what it’s like to live here and eat Thai food all the time. While it’s great, I do like the odd plate of sausage and mash for a change! How about you? What’s your favourite food? G: My most favorite food is actually Japanese, closely followed by real, authentic Italian. For Thai food I like to head to the Kow Tom places; crispy pork with Kale, pork knuckle and raw shrimp in lemon sauce. KM: Putting aside the “Carnivore Gidi” for a moment, tell us something about yourself that not a lot of people might know. G: I love to get involved with construction and renovation works. I always need to be active and setting new goals, otherwise I get bored easily. Our coffees drained and with customers beginning to meander into the restaurant, I say my farewells to Gidi and head out blinking into the sunshine. With fresh coffee coursing through me and a deeper insight into one of the locals of Ao Nang in my recorder - I consider this a morning well spent.

Koh Lanta highlights Koh Lanta is situated in the southernmost tip of the Krabi province. It consists of two islands, Koh Lanta Noi and Koh Lanta Yai. Koh Lanta Noi is the smaller of the two and does not have tourist facilities. Visitors travelling by road from the mainland pass through the smaller island on the way to Koh Lanta Yai - the center of the tourist operations. Ban Sala Dan village on the north side of the island is Lanta Yai’s commercial center and the pier where visitors arrive on the island. It is a row of shops, seafood restaurants on stilts, dive shops, tour operators, banks and guest houses that cater for newcomers on the island. The bulk of the Lanta beaches lie along the west coast of the island and can all be reached by road: Khao Kwang, Khlong Dao and Phra Ae all have long stretches of white sand facing the Andaman sea, while Khlong Khong, Khlong Nin and Ba Kan Tiang and other smaller bays are all nice to relax and swim. The east coast of Koh Lanta Yai is flat and has many local villages scattered along its coastline. Koh Lanta has a very diverse cultural mix of people who have lived on the island in harmony for hundreds of years: Thai-Muslim, Thai-Chinese and the original sea gypsies still inhabit the place in harmony. The biggest town on the island is Lanta Old town. Boat trips to Koh Lanta are available during the monsoon-free period from October to April. May to November sees the closure of some of the island businesses and of the boat passenger services due to rough seas. A minibus service is the alternative way to reach the island via land. Lanta Old Town It was once called Ban Si Raya and was the commercial port for Chinese and Arabic trading boats that sailed between the ports of Phuket, Penang and Singapore. Today it is a village with a few rows of stilted shop houses home to an ancient community that was established on the island long ago. It is a picturesque place with Chinese timer shop-houses dating back 100 years, from the old days of sea trading. Near the shacks along the coast, local fishermen dock their longtail boats giving the whole scene a very Thai look. Ba Kantiang Beach Spectacular crystal–clear seawater and soft white sand, romantic sunsets in utmost privacy. This is why Ba Kantiang has come to symbolize a hideaway in Lanta for relaxing in natural surroundings. Lighthouse on Lanta Located in Tanod Cape on the southernmost tip of the island, the lighthouse tower of Lanta is the perfect symbol of solitude. It is the place where immaculate nature still survives as it is rarely reached by tourists due to the rugged road conditions.

Koh Lanta National Park The park covers a marine area dotted with several small sandy islands surrounded by coral reefs. The headquarters is located on the island’s southern extremity. Ban San-ka-u A sea gypsy’s settlement in south-east Lanta Yai. It is there that an old clan of traditional Chao Ley try to preserve a disappearing way of life in this fast-developing island. Eco-tours These are run all year round from the east coast of Lanta Yai, not affected by the low season rough seas. Make your way to Thung Yee Pheng village for a trip with a local community, or book a tour with friendly and experienced local companies. Nature Because of its bio-diversity and richness of natural resources, Lanta is a good place for trekking. Explore limestone cave chambers and passageways in the Lanta caves, or walk upstream to the spring water waterfall where you can swim in cool rock pools. Fire Dancing This is definitely one interesting part of the Lanta beach culture. A fire dancing show is usually performed by young boys performing twisting acrobatics swinging burning torches and ropes lit on fire around their muscular bodies. A distinguishing show that sparkles in the dark.

37

Getting to Lanta First thing’s first - how do you get to this amazing island? There are a few ways, but not all of them are reliable during the Green Season months. Minivan From Ao Nang and Krabi, most of the ferry services stop running from April 26 - November 10, meaning that the only other option is to catch a minivan that leaves regularly from 8am - 4pm most days. It will change in Krabi town and from here, onwards to Lanta. Total time from Ao Nang is approximately 2.5 hours. Book at most agents with signs outside - hard to miss them.

38

Take Yourself You can of course make the trip on your own if you hire a car or even a bike (be prepared for some numbness if opting for the last one…). It’s a very straightforward trip - simply head south towards Trang on Route 4 (towards Tiger Cave Temple, Big C, Tesco) and continue for about 40km or so. You will see large, blue, overhead signs telling you to turn right for Koh Lanta and this road will take you right to the ferry terminal.

Buy your ticket at the booth and follow the man waving everyone onto the ferry. This takes you to Koh Lanta Noi - the smaller of the 2 islands. When you arrive here, drive off and head straight forward before taking your first right turn. Just under 10km later you will see a left turn sign for the ferry terminal. Follow this and you will end up at the second ferry. Same same as before, follow everyone else and you will soon be driving off on Koh Lanta Yai. Drive straight off and turn right at the T-junction towards Saladan.

When you Get There Cash The days of the traveller’s cheques are well and truly behind us now, as there are ATMs everywhere you look. As well as outside the banks in Saladan - of which there are few, you will find ATMs outside every 7-Eleven - of which there are many. If you do need a bank, look for a large purple SCB sign in Saladan. Internet Along with the traveller’s cheque, the humble postcard is no longer the sole means of placating your fretting mother back home as to your safety. “Internet cafes” (and I use the term loosely) are available at most travel agents and cost around 1THB per minute to use. As well as this, there are many hotels, resorts, restaurants, cafes and bars now offering free WiFi. It seems that the iPhone is now the “must have” item when travelling, and it really comes into it’s own when used with the WiFi hotspots here. Getting Around Like anywhere in Thailand, transport is generally not a problem. If you decide to forgo the moped option, there are many tuk-tuks on the island that will be more than happy to take you wherever you want to go for the appropriate amount of Baht. They can usually be found loitering around the 7-Elevens in the busier areas up north in Saladan and Phra Ae, or driving around looking for fares. Simply flag one down and ask how much it will cost to get to where you want to go. As a general rule, you should be paying in the region of 40THB to Klong Dao and 60THB to Long Beach from Saladan. Further afield to places such as Ba Katiang way down south can cost around 300THB for the 30 minute trip. Many of the drivers now carry printed price lists to show you, but it never hurts to try a little light-hearted haggling - especially if you are with a group. Mopeds Apart from this, mopeds are the preferred method of transport on the island. You can rent them in many places up north in Saladan, Phra Ae and most likely from the place you are staying at. Expect to pay around 200THB per day for a manual bike and 250-300THB for an automatic. If you want it for a week or longer, try haggling the price down a little and you could get a better deal. Don’t panic if they ask to keep your passport - this is normal and you will get it back when you return the bike (in one piece...). You don’t have to be an expert on all things mechanical when renting a bike, as long as the brakes work well, you can start and stop it comfortably and you know how to put fuel in it - you’re good to go. If you’re unsure

about any of thees, ask and the person renting it will be more than happy to show you - no need for embarrassment. Thai people are great like that. I could write a book on riding mopeds in Thailand, as it can be an extreme sport in some cases. Just remember to wear a helmet, look in your mirrors A LOT and take things easy. Also, don’t neck 4 large bottles of Chang and decide to go for a ride. If you do, see the next section for more info... Health & Safety As you are a long way from home, in a tropical country and on an island, it makes good sense to take extra care of yourself. This goes double in the green season, as many medical outlets will have reduced opening hours. If you do find yourself in need of medical attention, there are a few clinics on the island that can help. Right at the top in Saladan there is a public clinic that is open in the mornings from around 8 or 9am but be prepared to wait with the others as this is not a private practice. In Phra Ae, Dr.Sarin has a place that is usually open from 3pm onwards, but only in high season. If you are further south , there is also a nursing station at the Klong Nin junction that can help otherwise you need to head Eastwards to the hospital in Lanta Old Town. For minor ailments, there are a number of pharmacies on the island that can dispense advice and all kinds of medication. THis is usually the best choice first, and they can then direct you to a doctor if necessary.

Lazy Days at Layana

Layana review

I had read a lot about the green season on the island was particularly quiet and without much to do, but Layana newsletter promised lots of activities so I gave it a go and booked. I was greeted with warmth by the GM assistant, and escorted to my Garden Pavilion room, from where I could enjoy great views of the sea and of the huge area with well looked-after English lawn and palm trees. I soon discovered with pleasure that the hotel occupancy was pretty high so I could socialize straight away with a few happy and walking clients, on great sunny days. A late afternoon walk to the restaurant area, placed directly on the beach side, led me to a few signature cocktails and to meeting Layana’s executive chef K.Apichai, who advised me on a couple of dishes for dinner and invited me to taste his innovative Healthy Spa Cuisine menu the day after. I thanked him and followed his advice on a delicate tuna tartar with avocado, mango and marinated fennel as a greatly presented starter, and an amazingly tasty main dish of barracuda steak, all washed down with a superb Goya, a South African wine. The first evening was a success. Early morning the next day, I had scheduled a guided bike ride to Lanta Noi, the neighbouring island. Layana’s sporty guys, a couple of Dutch tourists and I set on a great mountain bike journey on brand new Trek professional bikes that took us on the ferry to Koh Lanta Noi, along a long but shady avenue sided by marine pine trees, all the way to the edge of the island national park where a powder sandy beaches and unspoiled scenic surroundings greeted us. There, a small longtail boat boarded our bikes and ferried us back to Koh Lanta Yai and a short ride took us back to the resort in time for a glorious and deserved breakfast. I took the afternoon at leisure until my 5pm appointment with Chef Apichai. The Healthy Spa Cuisine menu had a much wider choice of dishes than I had expected: all included veggies - both cooked and raw - mild curries, fruit and roasted or poached fish. They started arriving at my table, a feast for the eyes with fresh looks, lots of colours depicting the summer feel. This “nourishment

40

Needing a break from all the high season activities and not having lots of time to shoot out to faraway destinations, I decided to spend a couple of days at Layana Resort and Spa, in Koh Lanta.

from the earth” - stated K. Apichai as he joined my table to explain his cooking philosophy and describe a few dishes, is what our body needs to eliminate toxins and input positive nourishment from the earth. Perfectly presented too: a roasted salmon steak, its orange leaning on the greens of asparagus; a carved out tomato boat with a basil sail, floating in a sea of gaspacho; an amazing combination of BBQ prawns inside a hollow pomelo; mango, avocado and raw tuna in a tower the colours of a Jamaican flag. I took a walk with Chef Apichai to visit his organic herb garden where all the herbs for “Tides” – Layana’s signature restaurant – are grown. Healthy looking shrubs with leaves naturally grown and ready to be picked, a treasure Khun Apichai is much proud of. Back at the restaurant, the sun is setting over Phi Phi Islands and the tides are receding, as a gentle breeze accompanied me and my fresh blanco sangria and a few more cocktails to finish the evening in style. The morning after I woke a little later and headed to Layana’s Linger Longer Spa for my signature treatment, a 90 minutes aromatherapy massage. The front desk staff at the spa got me a

welcome drink, sat me in a bench on a garden with pagodas and wooden floors surrounded by small waterfalls and ponds, and took time to explain all the qualities of the various herbs and oils. I enjoyed the smell of all of them and eventually chose a Jasmine combination. The masseuse’s hands attentively massaged my body with vigour and the experience left me totally relaxed and content. Outside, ambient music was playing; I drunk a warm tea in an oasis of tranquility and reluctantly left to head to the reception for a chat with Stefan - the Manager of this little slice of paradise, and subsequently to the room for my check out. For a health-conscious traveller like I am, those two days at Layana really symbolised the perfect combination of an ideal holiday with as many or as few activities as you can take - a holiday you can take all year round. And with the absence of kids in the resort, the peacefulness was guaranteed. I wished I had a whole week time to spend at Layana.

Time for Lime - Fusion Restaurant

72/2 Moo 3, Saladan, Koh Lanta 81150. Head South and look for the sign .

This place has been one of the best little places on Koh Lanta since it opened it’s doors 7.5 years ago. Owned by Junie, a Norwegian who loves animals as much as her food, Time For Lime has become a haven for those who want to indulge in both of her passions. Her workshops in Thai cookery are legendary as she has a unique fusion style that differs from the usual Thai lessons you normally find. During her classes, expect to re-create dishes such as the signature Time for Lime soup, scampi wrapped in wild pepper leaves and even the wonderfully titled “sesame seed crusted barracuda balls with ginger on a bed of white radish & wasabi dip”. A great, friendly, laid back atmosphere is only accentuated by the jazz and chillout music that plays around the beachfront kitchen, and the homemade mojitos that come from here have been copied, but never matched.

Fresh salads made with buffalo mozzarella and hearty homesick remedies such as “bangers and mash” are welcome additions to the menu, which only stands as a testament to the thought these two put into their food. Ton Company’s new project, Krabi Riviera, wins on all three counts: sea views, private beach access and it’s close to Ao Nang

REAL ESTATE TRENDS

Location, location, location Though it may seem that a sea view villa in Krabi - with its miles of unspoiled coastline - was an easy thing to come by, in fact the opposite is true. Strict building regulations; National Park boundaries; and almost exclusively commercial use of the remaining exploitable beachfront land mean private homes overlooking the Andaman Sea are a rare commodity indeed. This is why Ton Company Ltd is very proud to announce its latest project, Krabi Riviera, a small luxury development of pool villas next to the world famous Railay Peninsula, all with sea views and access to an effectively private beach, Ao Nui. This small cove was recently featured in the movie Stranded, based on the novel The Swiss Family Robinson – and it is an idyllic “deserted beach”. But unlike the other, more isolated, seaview property developments in the province, Krabi Riviera is located only 4km from the major tourist centre of Ao Nang, and a few hundred metres from the taxi boat pier to Railay, Poda and Hong Islands, which makes it a very attractive proposition both in terms of convenience and investment. With 13 plots of 1000+ sqm, located on a gentle slope 150 metres behind the sand, Krabi Riviera is not planned as a “cookie cutter” development. “We don’t wish to impose pre-made plans on any of our buyers,” says Pierre Yves Loriers (Ton), managing director of the company. “Our in-house architects will custom design all the villas, according to the wishes and needs of the individual clients. So as long as they are within the guidelines of the new building code, i.e. use a traditional Thai roof shape and natural colours – which the majority of people prefer anyway – each house plan can be totally different. I think this is a big plus given that most real estate projects will only let you choose tiles and countertops!” Though each villa will be individually designed, and the land plots are large enough to provide ample privacy, there will be one important communal aspect of the Krabi Riviera project: a shared private beach access. The plan is to build a small clubhouse next to the sand, so that residents can enjoy a drink – and have somewhere to store a kayak!

48

Sunshine and political stability are great incentives, but perhaps the most important factor in the market for overseas holiday homes is the country’s prevailing exchange rate. When you are planning to invest hundreds of thousands of euros or dollars, it makes sense that even a 5% fluctuation in the rate can make a huge difference to the price you pay for your home. The strength of the Thai baht against western currencies (up nearly 30% in some cases over the last 3 years) has put many foreign buyers off investing at this time. Those quick to buy will be rewarded with lower prices as the market – due to depressed demand over the past few years – has tended to stagnate and may be slow to respond to the new lower exchange rates.

All villa owners will also enjoy access to an already established and successful management and rental program, run by Ton Company through www.KrabiVilla. com. “The rental return on sea view villas is especially high,” says Ton. “The limited supply makes them very in demand and owners can expect at least 15% yield on investment per year.” Eight of the 13 available plots in Krabi Riviera have already been sold; the remaining plots are awaiting buyers with a little imagination. “At the moment the only views are of cliffs and coconut trees: there is an unused rubber plantation currently blocking the view over the islands. And the access to the property is by a short dirt road,” explains Ton. “Many people who are unused to evaluating land, and perhaps unfamiliar with the rate of development here in Krabi are hesitant to commit. They can’t see the potential. We try to explain that it is only a matter of time before the trees come down and the road is surfaced – but by that point the price of the land will have increased threefold! We have a great opportunity here to invest before that happens.”

Krabi the next boom? A number of places in Krabi province now offer potential for resort and residential development that will definitely set it apart from Phuket.

K

rabi may be overshadowed by Thailand’s more famous resort areas of Phuket and Samui, but the province is no less attractive. Many nowadays argue that it is in fact more appealing and therefore poised for a real estate boom which is already happening. As of today, there are some interesting developments in the Krabi province that deserve attention. Some are big, other smaller, but all have chances of a very high capital appreciation. But why people choose Krabi? The main criteria are accessibility and the specifics of the sites, which is very much the view, and there is an awful lot of spectacular scenery in Krabi. Also, infrastructure is good, the airport is small but top of the range, the roads are there and more are being added and enlarged, and last but not least, Krabi has missed out on the Patong go-go bar development part of tourism. This is a great benefit to Krabi and will indeed be a huge strength for Krabi’s market going forward. The current economic situation must be taken into account as well. Although there are a few new residential projects due to be completed in the coming 12 months, most of these commenced in the years before the economic crisis started. It is well known that there will be added supply to the Krabi market in the short term, as we can see from the several projects starting up in this period. This could be a good opportunity, as it will likely strengthen buyers’ positions. For a long-term investment, it’s a great time to buy in Krabi if you have the money available. It certainly is a buyer’s market as you can negotiate very well in the current environment.

The real estate market has now switched from Phuket to Krabi, with the launch of branded properties with more professional developers in an area that stretches from Koh Lanta to Phangnga. Krabi has a real international airport open to all carriers with frequent flights coming from Bangkok and from Singapore, Sweden and Finland, unlike Samui. It is true that Phuket is way ahead of Krabi thanks to its marinas, but a new marina project is now fully functioning in Krabi and before time the province will place itself in the boating scenario. A lot of yachts are already cruising the area, able to shelter protected by the network of islands. Krabi boasts developments second to none. A good example of interesting developments to watch is Koh Lanta Sunrise Creek, a boutique project in Koh Lanta offering plots on an island with east coast sunrise views and a truly island feeling as it is close to the cultural places of the island. Unlike distant investors driven

THE PELICAN will be the largest new and used residential development in Krabi.

51

to maximize profits, the developers of Koh Lanta Sunrise Creek are committed to the project socially, environmentally and economically. They will own one home on the property and will be neighbors to future buyers. The quality of the homes, materials and construction is assured, as is the realization of the philosophy to be good stewards, to integrate positively with the local culture and to lay the foundation for a strong return on investment for owners. A Thai group of developers has embarked on a full scale development called The Pelican, comprising of condominium units, villas and a resort in the Kong Muang area close to several luxurious five-star resorts such as Sheraton and Sofitel, with outstanding sea views. Nestled in the pristine hills overlooking the Andaman bay, Klong Muang has unspoiled beaches and feels a million miles from the tourist area just down the road. The area is every sailor’s dream, being so close to a navigable sea. Ao Nang Villas is the latest project added up in the Ao Nang area: 35 two or three bedroomed luxury villas of high quality and custom made, offering tropical living in the most ideal settings surrounded by mountains and close to the Ao Nang beach. Kamalot is a company that builds homes that set them apart from the norm. Set in a very beautiful and quiet spot in Nong Thale, on both sides of a small river with crystal clear water, the houses are spacious, on plots large enough for privacy. Quality materials and an eye for detail make this different from other projects. Kamalot is developing 16 tropical villas and their surrounding infrastructure in phase 1. Another 6 villas are planned for phase 2. The houses are in modern style, built with much attention to the transition from inside to outside areas. There are indications that the Thai property market will escape a cycle of over-supply, further adding weight to the suggestion that the current market could indeed be a buyers’ paradise. Make Krabi your paradise.

Escrow in Thailand

I

n recent times a further safeguard for property investors was implemented in Thailand through the enactment of the Escrow Act BE 2551.
Generally, escrow can be described as an arrangement between three parties, namely seller, buyer and escrow agent, whereby the agent would have to be a neutral third party. Such escrow agent can be authorized to hold funds, important documents (such as title deeds) or other legal documentation to be distributed and released subject to certain terms and conditions, particularly the seller’s and the buyer’s instructions. Typically, such escrow services are performed in relation to property

E-mail: info@thaneelaw.com www.thaneelaw.com

transactions and are primarily designed to protect buyer’s interests until title transfer. Escrow arrangements may also protect the seller’s or agent’s interests. Developers also benefit from a widely accepted escrow system as it helps to strengthen buyer’s confidence in the Thai property market. A well and clearly drafted escrow agreement may ease and simplify a transaction significantly. It allows the parties to authorize an escrow agent to conduct certain instructions relating to a transaction, such as release of funds, documents etc. on the parties’ behalf. At the same time both parties can perform simultaneously

as agreed with peace of mind and the assurance that neither party will perform without the other party doing the same. An agent who intends to offer escrow services in Thailand is required to be a financial institution or other juristic person as described in the relevant regulations. It is estimated that escrow arrangements will become a widely used and additional instrument to secure consumer protection in Thailand.

(Koh Tub).

Krabi Magazine Around the World

This month we have another coldlooking photo from Mr. Andrea Romani, an Italian who looks like he’s freezing his gelatos off in front of the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, Germany.

Andrea Romani The Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, Germany

I do like to see pics like this as I sit in my sweaty office looking at the sun beating down outside the window. Reminds me of home, seeing all those clothes on a person, the pinched expression and the general air of numbness about the body.

Andrea loved his visit to Krabi so much that he’s returning again this very month to our sunny shores to thaw out a little. So welcome back, Andrea and thanks for helping to spread Krabi Magazine around the world! Get your face between the covers of our illustrious publication and be the envy of all our friends by sending us in your very own photo like Andrea here did. We want to see you in front of a famous landmark - if possible - somewhere in the world that isn’t Krabi and holding up a copy of this magazine. No photoshopped photos please - I can tell. No, you’re not that good. Let us know your name, where you’re from, where the picture was taken and what you enjoyed most about your time spend in Krabi and you could be in the running to win a year’s subscription to this very magazine, posted to where you are in the world.
