SMILE, YOU’RE IN KRABI! The world is big, the world is vast, the cultures and languages that cover our planet number in the hundreds. The planet can be a daunting place, and now that you’re out of your comfort zone and out into the vast unknown we understand your concerns. Should I rub the cute Thai boy’s head? I heard I shouldn’t go into temples in a bikini, right? What side of the road should I drive on? How do I say ‘Thank you’ in Thai? Where should we eat tonight? These are just a handful of the thousands of questions you and hundreds of other visitors to Krabi ask themselves everyday. That’s where we come in. Krabi Magazine is your go-to guide for everything Krabi (and Thai). We try to dispel some of the myths and give you some great recommendations on places to eat, go and offer you some language tips and cultural taboos to be aware of. We are a locally supported magazine so we have our advertisers to thank for being able to bring you the words in these pages, therefore if you visit one of the businesses in our magazine, please let them know you saw them here in Krabi Magazine.

WINDOW ON KRABI 12

www.krabi-magazine.com

AO NANG BEACH At 20 km from Krabi Town Ao Nang Beach is the most developed of Krabi’s many beaches. Ao Nang Beach is famous for it’s white sand beaches and large limestones karsts towering over the eastern edges. All of your accommodation, shopping and service needs can be found here. It is the hub from which to plan your trip to sea as well as to any number of the nearby islands. NOPPHARAT THARA BEACH Just around the corner from Ao Nang, yet still undeveloped with only a few resorts, bars and restaurants, Noppharat Thara beach offers a bit more “local” feel than it’s sister Ao Nang. Attractive because of its natural setting, this is where local youngsters and families gather during sunset and on weekends. At low tide, walk out together with millions of small crabs on the sandy pathways to a small island on the western edge of the beach. KLONG MUANG BEACH A further 20 km away from Ao Nang Klong Muang is the up-market side of Krabi, the place to be if you are after a peaceful and hassle free holiday. Catering to families and couples, it is here that you really get that well deserved repose, surrounded by pristine nature. RAILAY AND TONSAI BEACHES Are split and separated from Ao Nang by a limestone mountain range. Railay has two sides, east and west, and its settings are simply marvelous: crystal clear waters, pure sandy beaches, lush mountains and rocky islands emerging from the sea. Both beaches are known all over the world for their famous climbing routes. They can only be reached by boat, a 15 minute ride from Ao Nang or 30 minutes from Krabi Town. Enjoy a cocktail in one of the beach bars, visit the Phranang Cave, challenge yourself on a rock climbing or ‘deep water solo’ cliff jumping into the sea, hike the limestone trail to a lagoon or the viewpoint or simply chill out and watch the day pass you by. KOH LANTA BEACHES Koh Lanta has a wide selection of resorts for all tastes and pockets. Koh Lanta Yai island has long stretches of gleaming white sandy beaches and shallow emerald waters. Lined with March| 2016

tropical vegetation, a private spot is never more than a short walk away.. TUBKAEK BEACH Next to Klong Muang Beach, Tub Keak beach is another place to just get away; long, clean and powerful, the area boasts breathtaking views over the Koh Hong archipelago and provides for wonderfully charming sunsets. From Tubkeak beach you can venture inside the National Park and try the nature trail “Naga trek” to one of the most spectacular viewpoints in Krabi. KOH PODA This is the iconic island of Krabi and the first and most dramatic one you can see from Ao Nang beach. Hop on a longtail boat - the local wooden boats with their picturesque prow - and sail away surrounded by turquoise water.. CHICKEN ISLAND This should be next on your list as it is right next to Koh Poda. From the right angle when passing Chicken Island (Koh Gai) you can catch a glimpse of a chicken’s neck and head, some would argue more like that of a turkey but it’s up to you. The second island, Koh Tub, is connected to Chicken Island by a sandy isthmus and people can walk from one to another at low tide. KOH HONG This island archipelago demands everyone’s attention as it is one of the highlights of Krabi Province. The Archipelago, a group of limestone islands with many hidden caves and lagoons makes it perfect for snorkeling and exploring. Visit Lading and Pakbia islands before Koh Hong as they are much less visited and sport a blend of both lush jungle and tropical waters. Koh hong is usually crowded until 3pm so we recommend visiting other Lading and Pakbia in the morning, then going to Koh Hong after the crowds have started to leave. KOH PHI PHI Private bays, limestone cliffs, waters rich in marine life and caves where swallow’s birds nests are harvested are all here on the island that Leonardo Di Caprio once rolled his hot bod in while filming ‘The Beach’ at the now iconic Maya Bay. KOH JUM & KOH SIBOYA Both are unspoiled tropical hide-aways that have a unique atmosphere. Tune in to the slow culture here, imbibe the peace and recharge your batteries with the

soundtrack of lapping waves. KOH LANTA The developing island at the southern end of the province known for its prime sunset views, heaps of activities and glimpses into sea gypsy life. Koh Lanta is also a National Park that comprises many local islands surrounded by coral reefs, such as Koh Ngai, Koh Mook and the remote Koh Rok. LIMESTONE MOUNTAINS These iconic karsts characterize most of the inland area of Krabi, the most spectacular being the crags of Sai Tai, in between Ao Nang and Krabitown. Susaan Hoi is a 40 million yearold seashell cemetery; once a large swamp where freshwater crustaceans proliferated, today it’s home to 40 centimeter thick, shell encrusted limestone slabs, a geologically rather unique and is only 5Km from Ao Nang beach. KHAO PHANOM BENCHA NATIONAL PARK At 20 km from Krabi Town, the Khao Phanom Bencha national park comprises waterfalls, streams, lush forests and caves. It is home to all kind of flora and wildlife and to the highest mountain in the region from which it takes it’s name. One of the features of the park is Huay Thoi Waterfall where water runs down onto several huge pools. TARNBOK KHORANEE NATIONAL PARK Located in the north of the province, Tarnbok Khoranee national park is made up of limestone mountains, verdant tropical forest, caves and beautiful islands. It is well known kayaking explorers as there are a number of tributaries curving into a number of small caves boasting ancient cave paintings. SA MORAKOT OR THE EMERALD POOL Truly a natural wonder of Krabi: a pond of turquoise water with an average temperature of 30-40°C fed by a hot spring in the middle of the jungle in Klong Thom district, 70 kilometers from Ao Nang. HOT SPRINGS Situated in Klong Thom district, These natural hot springs are natures jacuzzis. They melt away tensions, relieve the body and mind with the fresh spring water running over mineral enriched limestone rocks.

news AIR ASIA OPENING NEW ROUTE TO LUANG PRABANG, LAOS

The budget airline Air Asia has been urging the air traffic control over Luang Prabang to open their tight restrictions and allow flights from one of the regions largest central hub, Bangkok. It has been a tough eight year struggle for the growing budget airline carrier to get it’s foot in the door and open routes to Luang Prabang. The new route

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has declared that the government will begin purchasing rubber at prices well above the current market price. The effort is part of a broader solution to begin the rise in rubber prices and the livelihood of the rubber farmers. The program is planned to being sometime before May 2016 and will begin with the purchase of 100,000 tonnes of raw rubber sheets from rural farmers throughout Thailand. The effects of a lowering rubber price have been felt not only in Thailand, but also in neighboring Malaysia and Burma. All three countries have agreed reduce exporting the natural resource in an effort to increase the demand on the product and therefore increasing the market price. We can only wait and see how these maneuvers play out for the farmers of Thailand, but we hope the situation for them improves as the current market price for raw rubber sheets is entering it’s 3rd year of slumped prices. DIVEIN Krabi’s coastline spreads over 300 kilometers, making it a great place to find new beaches and get wet while exploring the underwater paradise that surrounds us.

Over 150 islands dot the coastline offering a plethora of safe havens for fish and coral to live and grow. A number of these islands are only rock outcroppings without any beaches making them ominous and stunning to look at and great for snorkelling in to experience the amazing underwater life. There are many soft and hard corals that grow underwater and provide small cracks and crevices for fish and small crustaceans to hide in. If you have the breath in you and have the desire you can head out on a snorkeling expedition and dive in to see what you can find! If you prefer to go a little deeper and stay longer, you can try SCUBA diving. The entire bay area is quite shallow (relatively speaking) with most diving locations less than 30 meters in depth. The life underwater is rich and incredibly diverse, with hundreds of different fish, corals and mammals to discover. There are blacktop reef sharks, leopard sharks, numerous parrot fish, pipe fish, nudibranchs and of course the friendly clown fish (or more commonly known as nemo fish). The underwater world is rich in life but it is up to us to help preserve it for future generations, so please be considerate with your trash whether you are on a boat or on a beach and always look for a trash bin to dispose of your waste. Thank you!

Yoga teacher training Yoga Holidays Feeling as though you would like a holiday not based around beer, smoking and eating 7/11 food at 3am? There is no more perfect a place than Thailand to enjoy downtime that involves beach walks, delicious food and lush sunsets that nourish the soul. Krabi now has so much to offer in the way of holidays with a spiritual purpose, a choice between yoga retreats, healing courses or deepening your yoga practise, a month long teacher-training course. If you are a beginner and just always liked the sound of yoga or perhaps attending classes regularly. This is a guide to choosing the retreat or course that will ignite your soul, giving you the right physical and mental challenge.

The Type of Yoga There are many disciplines of yoga and this is an important factor in deciding what fits your style of practise. Hatha: Essentially the roots of all yoga, the physical practise will be slower and a deeper, a more spiritual form in classes and theory. Ideal for: Those with the desire to learn the beginnings and entire lifestyle of yoga. Vinyassa: This is a flowing, dynamic form of practise, using breath-linking movements, with emphasis placed on the sun-salutation postures. Ideal for: Those needing a strong, powerful practise to shake up body and mind. Ashtanga: Strong focus on vigorous physical postures and powerful breath control. This practise produces intense internal heat and sweat while learning the 1- 4 series of postures, so it can be competitive. Ideal for: Those that desire a robust, physical practise. Yin: A much slower practise that focuses on longer held postures to release muscles and connective tissues in the body. Ideal for: Those who struggle to sit still but desire to learn patience in body and mind

20

“If there is one thing yoga has taught me through teaching and practise is that flexibility of the body is less important than the flexibility of your mind and being open to the changes and transformation that yoga will deliver time and time again. Yoga is much, much more than strutting a posture, these postures do however lead us to a greater understanding of our breath and through this our present state, so never be disheartened by ‘not being flexible’ Yoga is an all encompassing lifestyle so there is no existence of good or bad, it is for every individual and body type” Suzi

What is a yoga retreat?

Even if you can’t imagine yourself teaching, this is a great way to truly immerse yourself. There’s a lot more to yoga and these courses teach you about the important philosophy, lifestyle, meditation and pranayama; which is the expansion of breath within the body, teaching skills as well as the asanas (postures). The courses start at 200 hours, which fits into a month and are varied in price. Most will offer a certificate with the worldwide Yoga Alliance, gaining the ability to teach in the UK, USA and Oz.

What can you expect? This is not an easy option, meditation and pranayama can start at sunrise with approximately 3 to 4 hours daily of physical asana classes to practise, learning to teach and adjust others in the postures. The courses allow for one day off a week and also consist of theory classes: anatomy and physiology lessons, chanting, yoga philosophy, history and explaining the 8 limbs of yoga. They may also cover Ayuveda; ancient Indian alternative healing and Kriyas; which are methods of cleansing the body. Doshas; which are an examination of 3 different bodily humours that make up our individual constitutions. Mudras; particularly hand mudras which are held to increase the flow of Prana, the yogic energy in the body and Chakras; which are the 7 energy centres of the body. Both retreats and teacher training can be intense for the mind and body. The essence of yoga is to question and sometimes rock your comfort zones, so there can be moments of elation mixed with difficult experiences. Expect to make friends and spend a lot of time discovering yourself even if that was not the original plan-yoga is potentially full of surprises. Many of these courses also offer social time to get to know fellow students, with shared meals, movie nights and trips organised locally to visit other islands. March| 2016

The History of St. Patrick’s Day

M

arch 17 - the traditional holiday for celebrating your Irish (or Irishwanna-be) roots. Taverns serve green beer, mothers make green mashed potatoes, various cities host large parades, and people everywhere don green clothing to show a festive comraderie – but do you ever wonder how and why this holiday began? St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, was actually not Irish at all. Young Patrick lived in 5th century Britain with his aristocratic, Christian family. At age 10, he was kidnapped by Irish invaders who brought him back to Ireland where he served as a slave for 10 years. In that time, his Christian roots brought him strength

24

to carry on and he became a devout Christian. Patrick eventually escaped back to England, where he became an ordained priest and in time, he chose to return to Ireland to serve as a missionary. Patrick’s understanding of the Irish language, beliefs and culture, was wisely incorporated into his Christian teachings. The Celtic cross that incorporates the pagan sun with the Christian Cross was his creation. He was also known to use the three-cloved shamrock as a symbol to show the holy trinity of the Christian faith. This is likely where the Shamrock and the color green originated as symbols of the Irish.

together on March 17 (the day St. Patrick died) into a pub in Manhattan. Since there were at that time many Irish immigrants in the city, it became a popular annual celebration for the Irish to gather and connect with each other. Over time, the parade and the Irish pride celebrations of March 17 have been popular for those wanting to party....It’s just a great day of celebrating Irish heritage – every nationality should have such a festival! And BTW – St Patrick never drove any snakes from Ireland – there never were any snakes there to begin with....

The first St. Patricks Day Parade was an unintended collection of Irish soldiers walking www.krabi-magazine.com

grounds, numerous statues of these majestic beasts can be seen throughout the area. The temple was built by donations from locals, tourists and some government aid and is now open to the public for worship, prayer and take in the brilliance of this awesome structure. The temple is set on a large open area with a main walkway taking you through some shops where you can buy trinkets made by the monks and locals. Necklaces with famous monks sitting in a lotus pose, or a small tapestry outlining some of the figures who made this temple what it is today.

Walking down the main strip you will be followed by a variety of dogs that live at the temple and will not bother you. The Monks feed these homeless dogs offer them a safe heaven to live and thrive in, it is one of the many good deeds these temples do for the community. After entering the temple area you will notice a staircase leading off to your left with a sign next to the first step, 1,237 steps to the top! Can you make it?

For those that brave the many steps there is a reward unlike any other

28

www.krabi-magazine.com

At the top of the temple you will be greeted by a massive 15 meter buddha statue again poised in the traditional lotus pose overlooking the town below. Gazing up at this amazing gold leaf covered statue, one begins to wonder how truly amazing it is that people could make this all happen without the assistance of heavy machinery. Believe it or not most of the concrete used to build the statue and temple was brought up to the top of the temple by devoted monks and builders. The steps going up to the top vary in size in both width and height so beware - the trek can seem easy one second and have your knees aching the next! That being said, all your persistence will be worth it once you take in the breathtaking views from the top. Start your climb at 4:30pm to catch the sun dropping behind a wall of limestone cliffs or begin your climb at 5am to see it climb it’s way out from behind them. It’s up to you but we don’t recommend you trying this feat at midday, the sun in Thailand is… well… strong! And during the heavy daylight hours this climb can be downright exhausting.

The Tiger Cave Temple is located about15 minutes from Krabi Town center, off of Phetkasem road towards the airport. Once you reach the traffic lights just before the Big C department store, turn left and follow this road for another 3 kilometers until you see a sign on your left for Tiger Cave Temple. Or just look up to the mountain tops for the golden buddha and drive towards it!

At a normal pace you can usually reach the top in 1 hour, so plan accordingly. For a great workout, try getting to the top as fast as you can. The ultimate Stairmaster! The current record stands at 15 minutes from base to top.

Good luck and don’t forget to charge your camera batteries. Open to the public all hours of the day.

Fad or Forever? When you hear the word “detox”, what do you think? Do you think of some sort of cleanse or purge like wheatgrass enemas? Does fasting cross your mind, or fluid-only diets? Or do you think of something more along the lines of alcohol and substance elimination? Detoxes have been around forever and the basic idea around it has always been the same. Detoxing is the basic process of ridding the body of toxins. In history, detoxing was a purification process for spiritual cleansing and was used as a part of natural medicine. In today’s society, people commonly associate detox programs with quick weight loss and crash diets. In fact, much argument has been made regarding whether or not detoxing really works, and if it even matters.

Does Detoxing Really Work? To understand if detoxing works, you need to know what purpose detoxing serves. Unlike the controversial weight-loss fads surrounding detox programs, the primary purpose of detoxing is not about losing weight. In fact, weight gain has a lot to do with the toxins and stress your body is dealing with. There are those who do their best to eat right, drink a lot of water and practice other healthy habits only to find that they still struggle with health and weight issues that may seem unexplainable. That is because most people are unaware of the toxins they build up in their bodies and how it really affects them. The human body has natural mechanisms that allow the body to rid itself of toxins. However, in this modern era with all the new processed foods and synthetic chemicals found in our water, air and interactive environment, we are encountering toxins that the human body cannot process quite as naturally. This leads to unhealthy weight gain and other health problems. That is why we do additional things to help the body detox. A detox diet serves the purpose of allowing your body a rest from the usual toxins it encounters on a daily basis, giving it a chance to recover and purge it from the toxins that are already present in the body. Detoxing is about taking the necessary steps to deter the negative effects that toxins have on the human body and function. Detoxing works when you are doing it for the purpose of cleansing your body from toxins, in order to improve your overall health. Your body is already trying to rid itself of toxins as you read this. Choosing to actively detox is about improving your body’s ability to do this.

38

www.krabi-magazine.com

How Does the Body Detox? The amazing human body already has organs that are designed to get rid of toxins. These organs are your liver, kidneys, lungs and skin. The body also has “systems” that majorly assist the detox process. These are the lymphatic, digestive and circulatory systems. These organs and systems allow our body to function and when we are healthy, we have few to no health issues. When the toxins in our body have built up beyond our capability to naturally detox, this is where we begin to encounter health issues. These could be things such as: -Fatigue -Muscle aches -Joint pain -Sinus congestion -Postnasal drip -Excessive sinus problems -Headaches -Bloating -Gas -Constipation -Diarrhea -Smelly stools -Heartburn -Sleep problem -Inability to focus -Unhealthy food cravings -Weight gain/weight loss-difficulties -Rashes -Acne -Eczema -Psoriasis -Canker sores -Other skin problems -Puffy eyes, dark under-eye circles -Severe PMS -Menstrual disorders -Perpetual bad breath -And more If you are struggling with one or more of these issues, it is a sign that your body is in need of a break from its regular toxin and stress intake. These are major signs that the body has reached the maximum level of stresses it can handle and it is time to make some lifestyle changes.

Detoxing for Life Most of the controversy regarding detox diets has everything to do with temporary detoxes for the purpose of losing weight. However, a temporary detox may not help a person lose weight, although it will definitely help the body rid itself of some of the toxins that is causing it to gain weight or have trouble losing it. Again, the body is designed to naturally detox. Even when we are not trying to assist the detoxification process, the body will always be attempting to do it. Detoxing as a temporary or short-term diet won’t work for long term results. The truth is that detoxing is a lifetime thing. Our bodies are committed to the job for life. Therefore, we should be committed to detoxing regularly for the purpose of allowing our bodies to function the way it is supposed to. The reality is that we live in a world full of polluted air, chemically-treated water, modified foods and synthetic substances found in everything we interact with. Our organic bodies weren’t designed to process all of these toxins, much less processing so many of them all at the same time. We live in an era of overload. As much as we would like to let the body do what it does and continue to live in reckless indulgence, it just won’t work. A conscious and active effort has to be made in order to undo the harm that we have done to our own bodies. This can’t be done in a single night, weekend, week, month or maybe even a year. It has to be done as a lifetime and a lifestyle. After all, we will encounter these toxins throughout our lives. The battle for our health is always raging. March| 2016

How Can I Help My Body Detox? You already know that no matter how we try, toxins are everywhere and they can hardly be avoided. But what are the few things that one can do to help the body detox more effectively and regularly?

1

. One of the first things a person can do to detox is to watch what you eat! It is no secret that processed and modified foods are full of chemicals, some of them we can’t even pronounce. Cutting these types of food out of your diet is an obvious first step. Replace these unhealthy foods in your diet with natural proteins from vegetables and lean meats, saturated fats from nuts and plants like avocado, and plenty of fruits and vegetables. Natural foods, especially fruits and veggies, have natural detoxifying and anti-inflammatory properties, as well as antioxidants and crucial minerals & nutrients that the body needs to perform its natural functions.

2 3

. Drinking a lot of water helps the body to stay hydrated and purge itself. Be sure to drink as much water as your body needs and do it regularly.

. Sweat it out. Our bodies have the ability to excrete the toxins from our systems. We do that when we use the bathroom (elimination), secrete mucus and sweat. Exercising is a great way to sweat toxins out of the human body.

4

. Greatly reduce alcohol from your diet. Alcohol prevents the liver from functioning properly. The liver is a natural detoxing organ. It should be pretty obvious that allowing your liver the freedom to function properly will assist in the detoxification process. If you do drink; do so moderately.

5

. Avoid drugs. Drugs, both prescription and not, are chemicals that change or affect the way the body functions. That is why most drugs have side effects that are negative. Avoid as many drugs as possible will keep your body free of additional toxins.

6 7

. Say no to white sugar, white flour and any processed, refined foods that are bleached of their nutrients and natural chemicals.

. Breathe fresh air. The chemicals we breathe in the air come from cars, factories and other by-products as a result of human life. It’s no secret that fresh air is becoming harder to come by. Try to breathe in as much as you can, and even tend a few trees of your own to contribute to clearing your air from pollution.

8

. Be aware of toxic people. This may not be an obvious one at first, but toxic people have a negative effect on the human body as well. Toxic people are those who willingly bring stress into other’s lives, in the various ways that they do. The human body naturally produces stress-related chemicals that cause issues like weight-gain, skin problems and even cognitive issues. Being aware of these people who indirectly add additional stress to the body is just as important as breathing in fresh air.

9

. Treat your body like it’s the only one you’ve got. It really is. Your body will do the job it was designed to do, as long as you maintain it and take care of it. That means treat issues as soon as you encounter them and live a healthy lifestyle. Detoxing regularly is a part of giving your body the firstclass treatment it deserves. Do you need to Detox? WAKE UP RIGHT.

That black goodness you love and need every day to get those eyelids apart. The great stuff - Coffee. Where is the best spot to get a cup of this “black gold”? We’re not only talking about the taste, we’re talking about a range of variables all playing essential roles in a great cup of coffee, flavor, strength, color, price, quantity and texture are the main parameters we use to determine the perfect cup. Flavor. A great cup of coffee should have a richly roasted, almost smoky flavor and a certain bitterness should be evident (if you don’t drown it out in sugar). Strength. A certain strength is necessary to make a cup of coffee truly great. After all, you are drinking this stuff for a jolt of energy, so

42

whats the point if it doesn’t do it’s intention? Not too strong though, we typically prefer a 70-75% arabica to a 25-30% robusta bean blend. Robusta is a stronger bean much richer in depth and strength, and has a super bitter and caffeine bite. Arabica is a milder bean, used more commonly throughout the global coffee market, due somewhat to marketing but also to the worldwide palate. A nice blend between these 2 beans is a fundamental building block to the perfect cup of coffee.

coffee is somewhere between 150ml-200ml. Texture. The last, yet maybe the most important detail to consider in a great cup of coffee. Does the liquid stick to your teeth and leave you with the occasional reminder of the cup you just finished? In our opinion a great cup shouldn’t “stick” too long. If you get a chalky feeling on your teeth, this cup is not in the running for a great cup of coffee.

Color. This is somewhat objective. Some prefer it jet black, others prefer a brown cream, and others still prefer a milky white color.

In our opinion, one of the best places for a superior cup of Joe in Ao Nang is at the U&P Bakery, located just outside town on the main road going through Ao Nang.

Price. An area of great importance but often left out of the ranking system for coffee, our price range for a cup of coffee is 40 - 60THB (about $1.2 - $1.8USD).

You can also get sandwiches, croissants, cakes, bread and much more, so take yourself for a little ride and see what we’re talking about. How does U&P coffee hold up to your standards?

Quantity. Nothing drives you crazier then the last sip of a great cup, right? Our perfect cup of

The magic in the foam,

A look into Thailand’s long overdue brewing revolution. The Dawn of man began in suds or so some would say. People have been brewing beer since the dawn of man and civilisation (some might even argue that the accidental invention of beer is one of the building blocks and cornerstones of agriculture). With beer comes a variety of flavours and opportunities to dance on ones palate. So why does Thailand not have a multitude of beers to try to compliment the multitude of flavours in their food? the reason is multi faceted. For one thing, microbreweries in Thailand are heavily regulated by the government. The desire for new flavours is not so widespread and necessary minimum production quotas make the whole endeavour rather expensive to start up. There are a number of reasons why the government might have these regulations in place, but these regulations are looking like they might be loosening up. There are a number of Thai citizens who have taken to the art of home brewing, and some of them have gotten so engrossed in the art that they have actually started selling it in local bars and restaurants. The love for these new flavours is taking over Thai society when now in the Hi-So regions of Bangkok and around Thailand it has become hip to drink these homebrewed beers. A number of them have even made names for themselves and started Facebook pages showcasing their products. Many of these brewers are sold out before the beer is even bottled. These brewers have joined together and are now forming a movement to petition parliament to make home brewing legal and allow these radical brewers to step from the shadows. A number of them have already done so and some of the many new brewpubs/ breweries operating across Thailand can be found on our brewers map. There is even a brewing academy called Chit Beer located on the Chao Praya river in Bangkok. Here can you actually learn the art of brewing and create your own recipe.

44

www.krabi-magazine.com

Beer is an essential part of our society; over a glass of the suds business ventures are sealed, first kisses happen, sports dynasties are watched and of course numerous laughs are to be had. It’s a building block for our civilisation, a cornerstone for who we are. Most of the beer you enjoy worldwide is a basic lager with most of the major brand names tasting basically the same. Heineken, Tiger Beer, Bud Light and San Miguel are just a few of the many basic pale lagers which overwhelm the beer market today. Still over 80% of the beer drank today is this pale lager style kind of boring but that’s changing with the onset of people caring what’s in their glass. Believe it or not this pale lager style of beer being so widely available is only a recent option to those living in the 21st century. Without the invention of refrigeration, lagers could only be produced during the winter months as it required longer storage times at lower temperatures. Before the onset of refrigeration and modern distribution systems, every town and city would have a number of brewers and breweries and would have only their product available in their tavern, or at most a few taverns in relative close proximity. Now you can enjoy a cold Bud light in Bangkok or an icy fresh Carlsberg in Argentina, it basically all tastes the same but lacks feeling, love and energy, in my opinion. Thailand has been under the chain of the pale lager for decades, now we are starting to see the flourishing of a new generation. A certain group more focused on quality, a new generation ushering in a range of sweet pilsners, bold and bitter stouts, robust and smoky porters and a plethora of hoppy ales. These craft brewers concocting up fantastic suds are all hoping that within the next 3-4 years local brewing will be an option to not only multi million dollar multinational conglomerates, but everyday people like you and me.

March| 2016

We talked with the so-called grandfather of the brewing trade in Thailand, Khun Chit, who owns a brewing academy located on the Chao Phraya River in Nonthaburi, just outside Bangkok. He is a self-taught brewer and the current main teacher for other aspiring Thai brewers who want to see a change in this ocean of lager. In just over 3 years since he opened, over 500 students have graduated form his academy and with the constant pressure for more classes, Khun Chit feels Thailand’s population is thirsty for a change and expects home brewing to be completely legal by 2020. If you’re interested in attending Khun Chit’s brewing academy, get in touch with him on Facebook: www.facebook.com/Chit-Beer or you can send him an email: wichit.saiklao@gmail.com. Classes are ongoing.

Currently Bangkok is home to some 30 different underground beer labels who are brewing, bottling and selling their goods throughout the city, so you might get lucky and find a bar or restaurant which has one of these revered bottles on stock. In the out stretches of Loei, Thailand, a Microbiologist from Canada has been brewing up some great pale ales, wheat beers, robust smoky porters and rich stouts - he has been creating a wonder of beers for friends and family to taste and enjoy.

Outlaw Brewing’s lead brewer, a lover of new frontiers, is excited for the repeal of the restrictive laws prohibiting those like himself from doing what they love to do. He explains “In Canada we have so many local breweries, each of them is brewing up the next crazy batch, some of these new beers are good, some not so. It doesn’t matter, at least the brewers are inspiring friendly competition, this competition has lead to the creation of some great new styles of beer.” In fact, a number of some of the more modern styles of beer are offsprings of these new experimental beers. Thailand is ushering a new era of creativity, experimentation and ingenuity. Neighbouring Vietnam lifted it’s restrictive brewing laws years ago and now home-brewing, and local commercial brewing has taken over, spurring the creation of thousands of jobs, businesses and opportunities. Thailand is soon to unveil the magic in the suds and open the same market for the masses. We all wait in anticipation, eager to see how 2016 plays out for home brewers and craft brewers alike. We urge you to get in touch with Khun Chit at Chit beer, or with Outlaw brewing as both have fantastic brews to try and are at the forefront of the burgeoning beer industry in Thailand.

HOME EXCHANGE 5 Reasons to Exchange Your Home in 2016 As entertainingly illustrated in the iconic romantic comedy “The Holiday,” exchanging a cottage in the British countryside for a villa in Beverly Hills is not just a pipe dream. Here are five reasons for taking the home-sharing plunge in 2016.

1.Travel on a Budget but Travel Comfortably Which would you prefer: a typical all-in-one hotel room or a separate bedroom for each kid, a fully equipped kitchen, a cozy living room, and bicycles in the garage for family rides? Exchanging homes makes it possible to fit a full family into a full house. For a single and affordable annual fee, members of home-exchange networks can occupy whole homes, usually as many times as can be arranged. Invaluable bonuses include your hosts’ insider tips on the best places to go.

2. Beyond Hotels and Rentals is a Third Way The exchange concept – one long considered a special privilege of a lucky and happy few – has now become mainstream. Well-established in North America and Europe, the idea of exchanging homes has taken root in China, Japan, Thailand, Brazil, Chile, and South Africa, and it has boomed in Australia and New Zealand. No wonder HomeExchange.com was just voted “Best Website for Booking Your Stay” by USA TODAY.

52

www.krabi-magazine.com

3. Your “Home Sweet Home” is a Key to the World Anything someone can sleep in can be listed: boats, RVs, tree houses, primary and second homes, beach cabins, condos, mountain chalets, penthouses, houseboats, pagodas, and chateaux. Even a house on the beach in South Africa that’s called the Sandcastle and really looks like one!

4. Home Exchange is Legal & Tax-Free Since there are no financial transactions between exchange partners, they are exempt from accommodation and tourism taxes. When you settle into your exchange partner’s home, you do so as an invited guest, not a paying customer. Instead of two homes sitting empty while their owners/renters are away, someone waters your plants while you take care of his swimming pool.

March| 2016

53

5. An Ecosystem Based on Trust and Friendliness Through verified profiles and secure messaging systems, exchange partners get to know each other well enough to use first names. As no money changes hands and both parties are equally hosts and guests, the relationship is balanced and free of customer-client concerns. Your future exchange partners are the lifelong friends you have yet to meet.

ABOUT HOMEEXCHANGE Founded in 1992 by Ed Kushins, HomeExchange.com was a pioneer of the “collaborative consumption” movement. In 2015, 65,000 members made over 130,000 home swaps across more than 150 countries. HomeExchange.com makes it easy to plan and enjoy a home exchange vacation and offers travellers a memorable, authentic experience. HomeExchange.com was voted in November 2015 “Best Site for Booking Your Stay” by readers of USA TODAY and 10Best. The cleanup organisation founded on Koh Lipe in 2013 has been steadily gaining traction for the past few years now. Coming to Ao Nang in 2015, the Trash hero group spread it’s wings and brought schools, government officials, resorts and locals together on Noppharathara beach. Now the community funded group is putting down it’s roots in Koh Lanta, the largest island in Krabi province. The clean-ups have started none too soon as the bridge connecting Koh Lanta Noi to Koh Lanta Yai is nearing completion and once finished the traffic and growth of the region will increase exponentially. With this growth will inevitably come the more homes, hotels, shops, people and so on, many of them throwing their garbage all over the place. “The success of our species is in the hands of the youth”, a saying we have all heard before and can agree with. This is the fundamental point for the Trash Hero cleanup group - to get the younger generation involved and they will practice what they learned with their everyday actions. The response in Ao Nang from local schools and government officials has been great and a number of classes have been brought out to the beaches and given speeches on why cleaning up the trash on our beaches is important. The Trash Hero Group is a great non profit organisation focussed on keeping our little province beautiful for generations to come. They are always in need of additional volunteers, so if you would like to spend a little time doing something worthwhile, please get in touch with Trash Hero here:

Kantiang bay A view few can match

So goes the feeling for those driving on a small winding road in Kantiang bay in Southern Koh Lanta, looking up at the numerous villas perched on top of the immense mountains which make the region so unique and beautiful. Kantiang Bay is one of the most beautiful areas of Koh Lanta. From the towering mountains and white sandy beaches to the immense cliffs which drop right into the sea 200 meters below, Kantiang bay has it all. Located in the southern region of the island, Kantiang Bay is a peaceful, scenic 30 minute drive from the island’s main hub of Saladan. The bay area is home to a number of high-end resorts and has arguably the most beautiful beaches on the island, making Kantiang Bay the perfect location for the revered villa resort, Kantiang Bay See Villa Resort. The resort’s owners reside in-house making themselves available to help the guests with any questions they might have during their stay. Where to eat, where to play, where to go, all of that and more can be answered by the couple Mette and Ken who have both been on site for the past 5 years.

Nestled on the hill side, guests can enjoy a spectacular 360 degree panoramic view of the bay below from any of the villas. THE SUNSET ISLAND Koh Lanta consists of two islands, Koh Lanta Noi and Koh Lanta Yai. Koh Lanta Noi is the smaller of the two and does not have tourist facilities. Visitors travelling by road from the mainland pass through the smaller island on the way to Koh Lanta Yai - the center of it all.

B

an Sala Dan village on the north side of the island is Lanta Yai’s commercial center and the pier where visitors arrive on the island. It is a row of shops, seafood restaurants on stilts, dive shops, tour operators, banks and guest houses that cater for newcomers on the island. The bulk of the Lanta beaches lie along the west coast - hence it’s often referred to name as ‘The Sunset Island’-and can all be reached by road: Khao Kwang, Khlong Dao and Phra Ae all have long stretches of white sand facing the Andaman sea, while Khlong Khong, Khlong Nin and Ba Kan Tiang and other smaller bays take in more dramatic views and less crowded for swimming. Ba Kantiang Bay has spectacular crystal– clear seawater, soft white sand, romantic sunsets in utmost privacy. It’s the picture of a postcard, symbolizing a luxe hideaway in

64

Lanta for relaxing in natural surroundings. Known as Ban San Kau, this sea gypsy’s settlement is based on south-east Lanta Yai. It is there that an old clan of traditional Chao Ley try to preserve a disappearing way of life in this fast-developing island. Once called Ban Si Raya, Old Town was historically a commercial port for Chinese and Arabic trading boats that sailed between the ports of Phuket, Penang and Singapore. Today it is a village with a few rows of stilted shop houses and home to an ancient community that was established on the island long ago. It’s a picturesque place dating back 100 years, from the old days of sea trading. Near the shacks along the coast, local fishermen still dock their longtail boats and make for an authentic snapshot of local life. www.krabi-magazine.com

UNPLUG IN KOH JUM

Geography brought electricity to Koh Jum late in 2009 as the island was in the direct path of the new underwater electric cable connecting Koh Phi Phi to the mainland. So now that Koh Jum is plugged-in, has it lost its reputable character that has attracted intrepid travelers over the past couple of decades? We are pleased to report that Koh Jum is still as tranquil and laid back as it always has been. In fact, what is most noticeable are the lack of noisy generators at most of the islands resorts. Folks come to Koh Jum to tune out; the island’s nature and culture dominate the minimal tourist infrastructure. The existing resorts on Koh Jum all have their own family-run character, ranging from the backpackers paradise to luxurious beach villas. Koh Pu Mountain is the dominant geological feature on the island at over 400 meters. It’s a great hike for the adventurous and a vital refuge of native habitat still harboring Asian Pied Hornbills and Burmese pythons. The three villages; Koh Pu, Ting Rai and Koh Jum are situated on the back side of the island, amongst the mangroves while the resorts are located opposite, facing the open Andaman Sea. This division allows the villagers to remain authentic without a significant tourist infrastructure while the resorts are all located on the beaches. Koh Jum is predominately a large Muslim populated sub-district of Krabi, home to over 1,500 inhabitants. The locals of these villages

70

engage mostly in fishing, rubber cultivation and the local crafts of cloth weaving and painting or ‘batik’ as it is known as here. While the north is mountainous, the south is comprised of dense jungle, cashew nut trees, rubber plantations, casuarinas and nipapalms. Since all the resorts face West, there are epic sunsets to be had all along the island. The renowned Koh Jum Lodge is an excellent place to stay for a few days, and has superb views to boot. Access to the island is by longtail taxi boats which leave from the mainland at the port town of Laem Kruat. There is now a songthaew you can take direct from Krabi Town to Laem Kruat. During the high season most visitors come to Koh Jum using the Krabi-Koh Lanta ferry which stops at two locations on Koh Jum, both of which are offshore so local longtail boats will come from the island to pick up passengers.

The lack of any deep ports on the island keep the ferry boats out at sea and almost prevent large masses of tourists from overcrowding the island. Getting here is an adventure and this ends up defining the interesting community of resorts and visitors that have made this island their home and the place they return to year after year. Getting to Koh Jum can be very simple or a bit of a nightmare, it all depends on how much you know about it. This is where Krabi magazine can help, we recently took the trip to Koh Jum ourselves and have decided to share the adventure with all of our readers. There are 2 ways to get to Koh Jum by passing ferry or longtail boat. There are ferries that leave from Koh Lanta at www.krabi-magazine.com

8am and from Krabi at 11am, both ferries stop as they pass alongside Koh Jum and signal to longtail boats to come and pick up visitors to land ashore Koh Jum. Koh Phi Phi also has ferries which leave at 2pm and operate on the same principle as above. The second way to get to Koh Jum is to go to the port town of Laem Kruat, from where you can catch a longtail boat directly to Koh Jum- this was our favorite of the 2 methods of travel. If you are driving, it takes about 1 hour to get from Ao Nang to Laem Kruat. You just head to Tesco Lotus and then continue until you see the large overhead signs which tell you to turn right for “Koh Jam”. This road will lead to the small locality of Laem Kruat, where you will find a large pier with boats going to Koh Jum. If you don’t have transport of your own, you can always catch a blue and yellow “songthaew” - the local buses that have benches in the back. On the side of the “songthaew” will be written – Krabi, Bus Station, Tesco, Big C, Laem Kruat, they are frequent and easy to spot.

>

March| 2016

These buses will leave from all of these locations at intervals throughout the day and will take you directly to the Laem Kruat pier. Now, the pier is a bit misleading. We waited at the end of the pier before realizing the longtail taxis were passing us by and docking at the mainland. Then we went back and followed our noses along past the shops until we saw a slipway with goods and people being unloaded. It was the second slipway we needed to get to “Moo Too”, the place on Koh Jum we were being collected from. If you know the name of the pier on Koh Jum you need to get to, just ask anyone in this area and they will direct you to the correct boat. We got on and soon were chugging along through the mangroves with a boat full of happy local Muslim women that looked as they hadn’t changed a bit since 1925. We arrived at Koh Jum just 45 minutes later, paid our 70thb fare and were taken by “taxi” (a battered old pickup truck) through the winding dirt track until we reached our destination resort. Give it a go and you will see a different side of Thailand from years gone by.

Well worth the experience.

WHAT DOES the term “ RAI “ MEAN ? A rai is a unit of area, equal to 1 square sen or 1,600 square metres (40 m × 40 m), and is used in measuring land area for a cadastre or cadastral map. Its current size is precisely derived from the metre. The rai equals 4 Ngaan or 400 Tarangwa a.k.a. square wa. Usually used in Thailand, the Rai, the Wah, the Ngaan and the Tarangwa are recognized by the International System. Converting Rai and Wah can be complex and can create legal issues when people do not understand what it is that they are signing at the contract stage. Ensure that you understand what you are buying and how best to deal with this. These are the basics for land conversion in the land measurement system in Thailand. Thailand does not have an Imperial or Metric system.

If you’re looking for property, why spend your time traipsing around different agents to see what’s on

-1 sq. wah = 4 sq. m. 1 acre = 2.471 rai or 43,560 sq. ft. -1 ngan = 100 wah (or 400 sq. m.) 1 hectare = 6.25 rai or 10,000 sq. m. -1 Rai = 4 Ngan (or 1600 sq. m.)
