Krabi, Thailand – 29 July 2016 - MBK GROUP partnered with Thanachart Bank Public Company Limited launching the new project, “Grow Happiness.” The project is focused on community development, especially through education and increased standard of living of youths in remoted areas, improving the community’s income, and upgrading the community’s environment. The project also aims to increase green area and promote economic plants farming in the community to increase income for future develpment in the community at the Baan Ramard, Krabi. Pinij Boonlert, Governor of Krabi, said “In the past few years, Krabi’s economy has been developing and expanding rapidly, however, those in the remoted area still faced challenges, such as lack of skills and insufficient income. Besides, some schools do not have sufficient funds to allocate for teaching and learning materials, as well as equipment, that are needed for educational development and health of the children. We are confident that if our schools have suitable environment and teachers have good teaching materials, our youths will love to learn and become more interested, and eventually improve the quality of education in the upcountry. As for the local residents, if they can earn extra income from the economic plants and private sector will become the market for such products, their quality of life will tremendously improve, leading to the better quality of life as governed by the government.” Arthorn Vanasantakul, DMD Finance & Administration, MBK Hotel and Tourism Co.,Ltd, said, “MBK GROUP, as the leading organization that has been with the Thai society for over 30 years, we are business developer of a wide variety of products and services. Currently, MBK GROUP has 6 main business units: shopping center, hotel and tourism, golf, food solution, real estate, and finance. Our business has continued and sustained growth. We are committed to spread happiness to our customers under the concept, ‘Happiness for All,’ and to operate our business responsibly to all stakeholders, including customers, partners, community, and the society at large. We consider sustainability in every dimension, especially the commitment to develop the communities in order to generate sufficient income for the residents who lack opportunity for careers and better standard of living. For education, we hope to give youths in the remoted area the quality education, such that they become quality members of the society to drive the society in the future. “Grow Happiness project at Baan Ramard stemmed from the Layana Resort and Spa, the boutique resort under the MBK GROUP at Koh Lanta. Travelling to Layana Resort, guests must board the boat from Baan Ramard quay, hence the close relationship between the resort and the community. In the past few years, we sought out plants that are suitable to the area and planted them along the public road in the community to improve Baan Ramard’s landscape. This year, we continue to work on the project and expand to help the community as a whole, with the focus on improving quality of life, advancing education, and generating additional income to the residents, especially women and elderly who want to help alleviate the family’s financial burden, according to the company’s CSR guideline,” added Arthorn. Stefan Heintze, General Manager of Layana Resort and Spa added, “For our cooperation to organize this year’s ‘Grow Happiness’ we host lunch for 200 children of Baan Ramard School. We provided them with mini burgers, mini sandwiches, cub cakes, ice creams and fruits. In addition, executives and employees of both Thanachart Bank, Layana Resort and Spa and the MBK GROUP, as well as the locals, planted over 1 rai of fragrant coconuts in the public area in order to increase the community’s income in the future. The special activities are also in place to celebrate Her Majesty the Queen’s 84th Birthday. The collaboration between MBK GROUP and Thanachart Bank, under the “Grow Happiness,” began and will also be an ongoing project to initiate and sustain the development of the local residents to show the power of commitment of the private sector that is responsible to the society, economy, and environment in the long run

October 2016 Krabi Magazine We’ve seen many a green season come and go in Krabi, some wet, some green and others just all around great. AO NANG BEACH At 20 km from Krabi Town Ao Nang Beach is the most developed of Krabi’s many beaches. Ao Nang Beach is famous for it’s white sand beaches and large limestones karsts towering over the eastern edges. All of your accommodation, shopping and service needs can be found here. It is the hub from which to plan your trip to sea as well as to any number of the nearby islands. NOPPHARAT THARA BEACH Just around the corner from Ao Nang, yet still undeveloped with only a few resorts, bars and restaurants, Noppharat Thara beach offers a bit more “local” feel than it’s sister Ao Nang. Attractive because of its natural setting, this is where local youngsters and families gather during sunset and on weekends. At low tide, walk out together with millions of small crabs on the sandy pathways to a small island on the western edge of the beach. KLONG MUANG BEACH A further 20 km away from Ao Nang Klong Muang is the up-market side of Krabi, the place to be if you are after a peaceful and hassle free holiday. Catering to families and couples, it is here that you really get that well deserved repose, surrounded by pristine nature. KOH LANTA BEACHES Koh Lanta has a wide selection of resorts for all tastes and pockets. Koh Lanta Yai island has long stretches of gleaming white sandy beaches and shallow emerald waters. Lined with tropical vegetation, a private spot is never more than a short walk away..
12
TUBKAEK BEACH Next to Klong Muang Beach, Tub Keak beach is another place to just get away; long, clean and powerful, the area boasts breathtaking views over the Koh Hong archipelago and provides for wonderfully charming sunsets. From Tubkeak beach you can venture inside the National Park and try the nature trail “Naga trek” to one of the most spectacular viewpoints in Krabi. RAILAY AND TONSAI BEACHES Are split and separated from Ao Nang by a limestone mountain range. Railay has two sides, east and west, and its settings are simply marvelous: crystal clear waters, pure sandy beaches, lush mountains and rocky islands emerging from the sea. Both beaches are known all over the world for their famous climbing routes. They can only be reached by boat, a 15 minute ride from Ao Nang or 30 minutes from Krabi Town. Enjoy a cocktail in one of the beach bars, visit the Phranang Cave, challenge yourself on a rock climbing or ‘deep water solo’ cliff jumping into the sea, hike the limestone trail to a lagoon or the viewpoint or simply chill out and watch the day pass you by.
KOH PODA This is the iconic island of Krabi and the first and most dramatic one you can see from Ao Nang beach. Hop on a longtail boat - the local wooden boats with their picturesque prow - and sail away surrounded by turquoise water.. CHICKEN ISLAND This should be next on your list as it is right next to Koh Poda. From the right angle when passing Chicken Island (Koh Gai) you can catch a glimpse of a chicken’s neck and head, some would argue more like that of a turkey but it’s up to you. The second island, Koh Tub, is connected to Chicken Island by a sandy isthmus and people can walk from one to another at low tide.

ON KRABI
KOH JUM & KOH SIBOYA Both are unspoiled tropical hideaways that have a unique atmosphere. Tune in to the slow culture here, imbibe the peace and recharge your batteries with the soundtrack of lapping waves. KOH HONG This island archipelago demands everyone’s attention as it is one of the highlights of Krabi Province. The Archipelago, a group of limestone islands with many hidden caves and lagoons makes it perfect for snorkeling and exploring. Visit Lading and Pakbia islands before Koh Hong as they are much less visited and sport a blend of both lush jungle and tropical waters. Koh hong is usually crowded until 3pm so we recommend visiting other Lading and Pakbia in the morning, then going to Koh Hong after the crowds have started to leave. KOH PHI PHI Private bays, limestone cliffs, waters rich in marine life and caves where swallow’s birds nests are harvested are all here on the island that Leonardo Di Caprio once rolled his hot bod in while filming ‘The Beach’ at the now iconic Maya Bay.
October|2016
KOH LANTA The developing island at the southern end of the province known for its prime sunset views, heaps of activities and glimpses into sea gypsy life. Koh Lanta is also a National Park that comprises many local islands surrounded by coral reefs, such as Koh Ngai, Koh Mook and the remote Koh Rok. LIMESTONE MOUNTAINS These iconic karsts characterize most of the inland area of Krabi, the most spectacular being the crags of Sai Tai, in between Ao Nang and Krabitown. Susaan Hoi is a 40 million yearold seashell cemetery; once a large swamp where freshwater crustaceans proliferated, today it’s home to 40 centimeter thick, shell encrusted limestone slabs, a geologically rather unique and is only 5Km from Ao Nang beach.
KHAO PHANOM BENCHA NATIONAL PARK At 20 km from Krabi Town, the Khao Phanom Bencha national park comprises waterfalls, streams, lush forests and caves. It is home to all kind of flora and wildlife and to the highest mountain in the region from which it takes it’s name. One of the features of the park is Huay Thoi Waterfall where water runs down onto several huge pools. TARNBOK KHORANEE NATIONAL PARK Located in the north of the province, Tarnbok Khoranee national park is made up of limestone mountains, verdant tropical forest, caves and beautiful islands. It is well known kayaking explorers as there are a number of tributaries curving into a number of small caves boasting ancient cave paintings. SA MORAKOT OR THE EMERALD POOL Truly a natural wonder of Krabi: a pond of turquoise water with an average temperature of 30-40°C fed by a hot spring in the middle of the jungle in Klong Thom district, 70 kilometers from Ao Nang. HOT SPRINGS Situated in Klong Thom district, These natural hot springs are natures jacuzzis. They melt away tensions, relieve the body and mind with the fresh spring water running over mineral enriched limestone rocks.

THAI-CHINESE MEETING TO DISCUSS HIGH-SPEED TRAIN PROJECT Transport Minister Arkhom Termpittayapaisith will head the Thai delegation at the 14th meeting of the Thai-Chinese steering committee for cooperation on development of the Sino-Thai high-speed train project, in Bangkok on Wednesday . The Cabinet, on August 22, gave the nod to a framework of cooperation between the Thai and Chinese governments to develop high-speed railways from Map Ta Phut to Nong Khai and Bangkok to Kaeng Khoi.
The railway project will feature dual 1.435-metre gauge tracks and cover a distance of 837 kilometres in total. The Thai and Chinese governments also reached an agreement of cooperation on development of the projects the following day. Under the deal, Thailand will retain ownership rights for the entire project, helping it accelerate commencement of construction by the end of this year. The Chinese side will be responsible for surveying the project’s proprietary
suitability and design as well as join hands with the Thai side for operations, involving electric system, rolling stock and track installation. According to the Cabinet resolution, the 250km Bangkok-Nakhon Ratchasima route would be developed in the first phase and its extension across the Isaan region undertaken later. The route requires an investment of about Bt170 billion to Bt190 billion. by The Nation Thailand
TOURISM IN THAILAND IS ON THE RISE Tourism accounts for almost ten percent of Thailand’s GDP making it one of the most important industries in the Kingdom. The numbers of visitors arriving on Thailand has continues to rise year after year despite the bombings, military coup and various attacks against the country over the past decade. Of recent the tourism demographics have begun to shift from the traditional European market to a more Asian market, with visitors coming from Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Korea but mostly from China. The numbers of Chinese tourists has increased exponentially over the past few year to a point where China is the leading country coming to Thailand.
14
This upcoming season is no different with an expected 9 million travelers from China are expected to make a trip to Thailand in 2017. Many of these tourists come on standard large group tours where they have the start to finish of their trip planned already for them, but more and more are coming on their own, booking accommodation, transportation and tours on their own. These tourists are flooding the tourist market and are causing hoteliers to build more properties and villas to accommodate for this increasing demand. As the Chinese economy continues to grow year after year there shows no signs of slowing down with these record setting numbers of visitors to Thailand. www.krabi-magazine.com
WILAVAN STEERS THAILAND TO SENSATIONAL 3-0 WIN OVER YOUNG JAPAN TO CLAIM BRONZE AT AVC CUP
DESIGN YOUR OWN SPA DAY FROM SO SPA WITH L’OCCITANE AT SOFITEL KRABI PHOKEETHRA GOLF & SPA RESORT In-form Thailand put it past fighting Japan in comfortable straight sets 25-22 25-16 25-17 in the thirdplace playoff of the ‘SMM” 5th AVC Cup for Women at the Vinh Phuc Gymnasium here on Tuesday to claim consolation bronze medal at the week-long competition. The convincing win over the Japanese youngsters was a sweet revenge for the Thailand’s bitter loss at the hands of the fullfledged Japan national team at this year’s FIVB World Grand Prix and at the World Olympic Qualification Tournament. It was also a successful comeback for Thailand in the AVC Cup after they had a disappointing outing at the previous edition two years ago in Shenzhen, China, where Thailand, represented by their U23 team, finished a distant 5th place ini the top-fight competition. Both teams traded points from the start, making the most of their spectacular attacks, scintillating blocks and powerful jump serves which saw neither team lead with more than a two-point margin. Leads changed hands for several times, but Thailand fared better with exceptional spikes from Wilavan, Pleumjit and terrific mid-court attacks from Ajcharaporn to snare the see-saw first set 25-22. Their confidence increasingly boosted with the first-set win, Thailand played more comfortably in the second set. Despite putting up a brave fight against the much stronger Thais, Japan found no match against the gritty oppositions. Leading 24-16 for good, Thailand won the crucial point to wrap up the easy set 25-16, thanks to talented Wilavan’s sharp attack from the back court. Thailand still dominated the third set, with Pimpichaya and Ajcharaporn taking turns penetrating the Japanese defence with their kills to put the Thais in the pole position 18-14. Japan tried to respond with a brave fight, but they could not cope with the Thais’ exceptional tactics. Thailand captured the set 25-17, match and the bronze medal. Japan, which finished fourth two years ago, maintained the similar position this time. Text and photos provided by The Nation Thailand October | 2016

YOUR COFFEE, YOUR WAY Capsule coffee is becoming more popular in Thailand at the moment. It is, however, not a novelty as other countries like the United States and many European countries have long enjoyed this convenience. We have to look at fresh coffee as a culture. From that perspective, we can understand why dedicated coffee enthusiasts are at times dissatisfied with coffee made at home. The lack of consistency can be upsetting. This has led to the development of single-serve coffee pods in the beginning, and now to popularity of coffee capsules. This innovation offers optimal preservation of taste and caters to the fast pace of life today. In order to produce the best capsule coffee, top-grade beans are roasted and ground using a special procedure to ensure quality. Additional elements are then added to achieve a variety of tastes or intensities. It is at this stage where the magic touch of a Batista is encapsulated.

Benefits Of Sleep…. 1. Heart Healthy Sleep interacts with the blood vessels that keep blood pressure and cholesterol level, which play a role in heart disease and strokes 2. Curbs Cancer Dark exposure increases the level of melatonin, a hormone that makes us sleepy and is thought to curb cancer. Melatonin appears to suppress the growth of tumors 3. Stress Silencer When your body lacks sleep, it goes into a state of stress then produces stress hormones. Stress hormones unfortunately make it harder for you to sleep. Sleep can help lower blood pressure and elevated levels of stress hormones. Sleep helps to slow these effects and encourages a state of relaxation 4. Inflammation Soother Sleep lowers your stress hormones and reduces the level of inflammation in your body. Inflammation is thought to be one of the causes of the deterioration of your body as you age 5. On your toes Sleep simply allows you to feel rejuvenated and alert the next day. Creating opportunity to have increased activity in your day. This in turn will increase your changes for yet another great night of zzz’s 6. Memory Maker Researchers do not fully understand why we sleep and dream but a process called memory compiling occurs during sleep. While your body may be resting your brain is busy processing your day, making connections between events, sensory input, feelings and memories. Your dreams and deep sleep are an important time for your brain to make memories and connections. 7. Weight Reducer Sleep helps regulate the hormones that affect and control your appetite. So if you are interested in controlling or losing weight, don’t forget to pay attention to getting a good night’s sleep
How Lack Of Sleep Can Affect You…. Here are a few symptoms that follow the lack of sle ep: •Decreased efficiency and productivity; everything seems to require more effort •Weakened Immune System •Memory loss •Irritability •Lack of concentration and an inability to learn •Impaired judgment •Increased feelings of depression, apathy, irritability or aggression •Delayed reaction time •Exhaustion
8. Nap Snap Taking a nap can do a tremendous amount of good. This little break allows you to snap back in to action to continue your day. People who nap at work have much lower levels of stress. Napping also improves memory, cognitive function and mood 9. Depression Demolisher Sleep impacts many of the chemicals in your body, including serotonin. People with a deficiency in serotonin are more likely to suffer from depression. Lack of sleep impacts your serotonin levels, as well as increasing the chance for mood swings and agitation when awake. Continued lack of sleep can become a chronic problem which can lead to long-term mood or emotion disorder such as depression or anxiety 10. Body Rebuilder Sleep is a time for your body to repair damage caused by stress and other harmful exposures. Your cells produce more protein while you are sleeping. These protein molecules provide the building blocks for healthy cells to form, allowing them to repair damage
Your time spent in preparation is as equally important to the way you will enjoy your time in the “Land of Smiles”. Let sleep be a part of your dreaming and your planning. Then simply rest. DIVE IN
Krabi’s coastline spreads over 300 kilometers, making it a great place to find new beaches and get wet while exploring the underwater paradise that surrounds us. If you prefer to go a little deeper and stay longer, you can try SCUBA diving. The entire bay area is quite shallow with most diving locations less than 30 meters in depth. The life underwater is rich and incredibly diverse, with hundreds of different fish, corals and mammals to discover. There are blacktop reef sharks, leopard sharks, numerous parrot fish, pipe fish, nudibranchs and of course the friendly clown fish (or more commonly known as nemo fish).
The underwater world is rich in life, but it is up to us to help preserve it for future generations, so please be considerate with your trash whether you are on a boat or on a beach and always look for a trash bin to dispose of your waste. Thank you!
OCTOBER
TIDE TABLES KRABI
Over 150 islands dot the coastline, offering a plethora of safe havens for fish and coral to live and grow. A number of these islands are only rock outcroppings without any beaches, making them ominous and stunning to look at and great for snorkeling and to experience the amazing underwater life. There are many soft and hard corals that grow underwater and provide small cracks and crevices for fish and small crustaceans to hide in. If you have the breath in you and have the desire, you can head out on a snorkeling expedition and dive in to see what you can find!

Back in your home country, going to the spa once a month may be considered an indulgence. Here in Thailand, they are an important part of everyday life - so make the most of it!
www.krabi-magazine.com
In this day of constant demands from work, life (and, let’s face it, social media…) we can become a little lost and need to take some tim out to recharge the batteries. One of the greatest aspects of life in Thailand is the spa culture, and at a fraction of the price in western countries, it would be a shame not to indulge…

The King Zipline‌
of the
Let me introduce you to Jimi Arcalas, a man with big dreams and one living the life that many only dream of. Jimmy comes from a town just outside of Manila, Philippines. As a young boy he was intrigued by Western television and movies. He had a tremendous imagination and dreamed of
48
being outside of the bubble he lived in as a child. His dreams began to blossom as he worked within the hotel industry for over eighteen years. He had the opportunity to travel and
spend many years in hotel management throughout the Middle East and the Pacific Islands. Through his travels, he found himself in management at yet another resort, this time in Thailand.
www.krabi-magazine.com
He managed a resort that had fun indoor, outdoor activities for their guests to enjoy whilst on holiday here in Thailand. Activities like paintballing, archery, horseback riding, ATV adventures, BB gun courses and even ziplining. Of all of these great activities, ziplining intrigued him the most. He was trained to inspect and test the zipline courses for safety. As he inspected the courses his mind began to wander once again and he thought to himself, “I could make these ziplines and make them even more exciting

culture, the diversity of food and especially being nestled against the Andaman Sea. Jimi was in high demand, having already constructed 82 different games, and it wasn’t long before he was approached by a new venture coming to Ao Nang. He was given “carte blanche” in creating the zipline adventure park of his dreams. He took the offer to become a part of the Ao Nang Fiore Resort and Spa in Ao Nang, Krabi. He began to create games that were taken from his favorite super heroes, epic Hollywood films and even video games. These include Harry Potter, Spiderman and even Super Mario. Nearing the anniversary of its inception people from all over the world is now given opportunity
to enjoy a total of 56 games. From the safety training course, the easy course and even the extreme course soaring to heights of 23 meters, there is something for everyone. Jimi tells us, “I love Krabi for its natural beauty and the friendly people. I will always love ziplining because every time I hear the laughter from our guests, it keeps me young”. Jimi is a real testament of how to stay 58 years young.
Rarely is Jimi not to be found at the Ao Nang Fiore Zipline Adventure Park. They are open seven days a week, 9-5pm daily. Go and meet the legend yourself and you see just how he lives to soar above it all and to have people just like you laugh him into living like a king; the king of the zipline. Phone: 075-695-5223

7th Heaven; a huge outdoor park and restaurant is located on a hillside only about 800 meters from the Ao Nam Mao Pier and about 4 kilometers from downtown Ao Nang. The interior of the park resembles that of almost alice in wonderland. Sporting large cartoon statues and 4 meter tall chess pieces. Throughout the park is a feeling like the mat hatter is going to jump out from behind one of the many statures.

rom the top of the park you can enjoy amazing panorama views of Krabi river and Ao Nam Mao beach while you sip on a cocktail or fruit shake, and maybe dive into a more demanding meal such as massaman curry or shrimp with tamarind sauce. Overlooking the bay below while the sun is setting is truly and experience to take in, as the ocean is only a short 200 meters from the property but the top of the hill (which is also where you can dine from) is set back in the sky at around 60 meters giving you a feeling like you’re a bird in the sky. Although some might find it hard to find, it is relatively easy to navigate to from the main road connecting both Ao Nang and Ao Nam Mao areas. Just 100 meters before the Ao Nam Mao roundabout you will see a sign on your right, simply follow this road and you’ll see it on your right shortly thereafter. The park has been decorated with a little bit of everything. From the life sized chess pieces to the massive railroad cars and Greek an Roman statues of gods and goddesses spewing water from their lips into large circular pools. 7th heaven has a little bit of everything. They even have live animals, a pony and a small flock of lambs on site at all times, so you can pet, feed and play with these friendly farm animals. Given they are mostly organized here for children, but if you’re an adult and you want to play with the pony, it’s ok nobody will judge your inner kid. Although the park is located next to dense jungle and on a hillside there is little respite in the park grounds from the intense Thai sun. For this reason we strongly suggest you try to take your visit in the later afternoon (anytime after 3:30pm) that way you won’t need to swim in suntan lotion prior to arriving. There is a park entrance fee of 100THB/person for adults and 50THB/person for children so come prepared, but it’s a small price to pay to get an experience such as what 7th heaven can offer you. For a photographer this is a must visit spot in Krabi. The diversity of colors, shapes, shadows and depth of field opportunities are just endless here at 7th heaven. For anyone who is and avid photographer or just getting into photography this is a must visit spot to hone your skills. If you want to make whole day out of 7th heaven, there is live music on weekends so keep this in mind when you’re planning your week. Head over in the late afternoon, listen to country rock music flowing throughout the park as the sun sets in the background. Open - Close: Open Monday - Friday from 11:00 to 21:00 hrs, And Saturday - Sunday from 09:00 to 21:00 hrs. Location: Soi 11, Krabi, Thailand Sai district, Muang Krabi. T H E N E W ILLUMANORAH SHOW BY PAKA IS SHINING BR IG H T I N T O THE NIGHT After 3 years of rigorous planning and marketing, the PAKA Showpark has finally opened its doors with the first breathtaking performance this past March titled ‘The Illumanorah. The theatre is outfitted with hundreds of multi-colored lights, fog machines, lasers and a number of other visual effect tools making it a truly amazing show to witness. Located on Pekasam road (about 30 minutes from downtown Ao Nang), it is easily accessible by motorbike or car, but if you feel like taking full advantage of the PAKA SHHOWPARK amenities, you may call the operator at: 075-656-853 to arrange a free van trip. The Illumanorah show is not all there is to keep you and your family busy at The PAKA SHOWPARK. There is also a full buffet offering a number of traditional Thai dishes, drinks and desserts, as well as season events and parties such as German beer fest or a Thai themed event.
58
www.krabi-magazine.com
The performers you see prancing, jumping and twirling through the air are all from Krabi, but without a true performing arts theatre or school, there are few options for this group to learn and develop their skills as performing artists. The PAKA SHOWPARK enlisted a team of choreographers from Bangkok to train the more than 30 performers. The Illumanorah features a range of acrobatics and visual arts and over 30 cast members. It tells the story of a young girl as she ventures to the south of Thailand. During her travels, she meets a group of locals, who give her a magical crown or “Manohra.” Once she dons the crown, she is whisked into a magical world inspired by her imagination. On this new (inner) adventure, she is introduced to the god of the ocean called the Naga. While with the Naga she meets hundreds of Tiger fish, sea flowers, giant jellyfish, and glowing sea insects which interact with her Manohra, illuminating it and brightening the stage. After her adventure with the ocean and all its beauty, she closes her eyes and is transported to the Himmapan forest, rich in wildlife and mystery. On this new (inner) adventure she is introduced to the god of the ocean called the Naga. While with the Naga she is introduced to hundred of Tiger fish, sea flowers, giant jellyfish, glowing sea insects which interact with her Manohra illuminating it and brightening the stage. After heradventure with the ocean and all it’s beauty she closes her eyes and is transformed yet again to the Himmapan forest, rich in wildlife and mystery. October | 2016
In the Himmapan forest, she is surrounded by wild deer, butterflies, birds, and other forest Creatures, all of whom seem to have a sort of reverence for her Manohra, and treat her as the queen of the forest. And so enter the antagonists, a group a hunters who see her infinite beauty and the beauty of the creatures worshiping her, and who decide to capture her and the wondrous forest creatures. They do this with a fervent intensity and cruelty. Hunting the last of the forest creatures, they capturing it with ropes and chains. The once beautiful Himmapan forest is then distorted into a desperate and desolate place. However, rescue is on its way! The Naga (God of the ocean and protector of the land) seeing there to be a gap in the perfect work of the imagination, sets forth to stop the hunters and free the many creatures of Himmapan forest. And so the battle ensues! After an intense fight, the Naga is victorious and the hunters are banished from the forest. The Land is then freed from evil, the girl and fantastical creatures are set free, the girl returns her Manohra, and sent back into the world where she was born. From her experience, she realizes that the Manohra is a sacred piece of the local culture where she visited and should remain there despite its supernatural powers. She then continues her journey as a tourist. The story that is told during the show is a true and accurate one. Not only is it a fantastic performance given by the many talented cast member, it has a message that can be taken to heart.
“Krabi is a wonderful place, full of allure and adventure, but one should think twice when wantingto take parts of this paradise home.” The PAKA SHOWPARK was built in 2015 but the planning for such a performance has been underway for the past 3 years. But that is not all… What you see at a PAKA SHOWPARK is only the beginning of what is to come. There are big plans for the future such as a large outdoor amphitheater, and an even larger outdoor shopping area. So take in the greatness that The PAKA SHOWPARK has to offer but brace yourself for what is to come. It will truly be an experience to remember. To see more information visit their website: www.pakashowpark.com or call them directly: 075-656-853 Krabi is a wonderful place, full of allure and adventure, but one should think twice when wanting to take parts of this paradise home.

HOW TO AVOID AND TREAT ACCIDENTAL DOG BITES
60
www.krabi-magazine.com
A
ll of us have at one time or another has been confronted by an aggressive dog. Since few people enjoy the possibility of actually being bit, what can be done to minimize the potential of a bite to ourselves or a member of our family? One of the best protective measures is to be informed with the knowledge of how to act in a confrontation with an unfriendly animal. Adults and especially children need to be aware of the dos and don’ts to prevent injury.
1) Any dog can bite. Mean looking dogs and even the smallest, cutest dogs can deliver a painful bite. Always be a little cautious when dealing with any dog. 2) Be careful around any dog that you don’t know. Approach such an animal in a friendly, non-threatening way. Crouch down and allow the animal to come to you. Keep your actions slow and deliberate and your voice at a lower volume. Offer the back of your hand to a friendly animal so it can smell you and can respond calmly to your presence. 3) Never interrupt a dog that is sleeping, eating or taking care of puppies. The animal can easily feel threatened in these situations and react in an aggressive and protective fashion.
I personally learned this as a child when a small, cute dog approached my bicycle as I rode past his house. As I slowed down to greet the dog, he calmly walked up to me wagging his tail. The next thing I knew , he was trying to eat a piece of my ankle for lunch. So, extra caution is needed when even a seemingly friendly strange dog comes near. Children are most at risk. They are often, either overly friendly or overly fearful of dogs. Teach the friendly kids to act quietly and slowly around a dog. Remember that for generations dogs have been conditioned to hunt for their food. When a child or adult feel unsafe near a dog and run away the dog is programmed to chase the runner. A friendly dog is happy to play the” chase” game but an aggressive animal could easily be prone to bite the fleeing person. Both types of dogs will look dangerous to the child and will encourage more of the same wrong behavior. And perhaps the most important rule for parents is to never leave your child alone with a dog for any reason. If you are cornered by an aggressive dog, never run or scream. Do not look the animal in the eye. This can be understood as a challenge by the animal. Be as calm as possible and slowly back away to diffuse the moment.
WHAT TO DO IF YOU RECEIVE A DOG BITE If you do get bit be a dog there are four things you should do. 1) Try to not get bit again. Do what is necessary to avoid more damage. 2) Ascertain just who owns the dog. If it is possible try to use your phone’s camera to get a picture of the dog. Remember that in most developed countries the owner of a dog is responsible to register the dog and provide for the proper course of immunization shots. You could also be facing medical bills that are ultimately the responsibility of the dog’s owner. 3) Wash the wound with soap and water if possible. 4) Seek medical attention immediately. An animal bite that breaks the skin will expose the recipient to plenty of bacteria that can cause dangerous infections and may need professional cleaning, wound closure and antibiotic treatment . Any dog not properly inoculated for Rabies can be a potential carrier of the disease. Rabies is a severe and often fatal viral infection that will involve a complex and costly series of treatments. Dogs are great animals that are quite social in nature. Many are trusted and valuable companions to their owners. However, it is often easy to get into trouble with an unfriendly animal. Everyone should know the proper ways to defend themselves and diffuse a potentially dangerous situation for their families and for their own protection.
4) Everyone should already know that it is unwise to approach a barking or growling dog. But there are other signs that a dog is not comfortable with you close by. Learn to take clues from the animal’s body language. Any dog that looks away often, is licking it’s lips without food being present, who appears nervous, or has the hair on its neck or back raised , should be given its space. 5) Use extreme care if you approach, give aid or attempt to move an injured dog. An animal in pain may quickly bite at anyone trying to touch it. Although it is hard to see an animal in distress, leave this to a professional. Don’t mistake a dog that is wagging its’ tail for a friendly dog. When a dog is happy it wags, not only its’ tail, but its’ whole body as well. If a dog is wagging the tail but the rest of the body appears stiff and nervous, the dog is probably uncomfortable with the situation and should be avoided. October | 2016

Life and this planet we all live in is a fascinating place, full of beauty and opportunity, These opportunities and little tid bits of beauty are everywhere all around us all time time, but many of us are just too busy and focused on work and “accomplishing that we just seem to miss and forget these things and situations. Many of us just need a second to slow down in order to take in the beauty which surrounds us. For others it s retreat from the everyday bustle and an attempt to alter ones reality into another dimension.

For Khun Son it is his paintbrush and canvas. From a young age this talented young man knew he was destined for something less conventional, not the normal 9-5 that so many of us find ourselves trapped in. He could not handle the level of senseless structure that that live breeds. He found happiness and purpose in his own world, a world he could dream up from the hollows of his subconscious, the fantastical stories of old or a certain rendition of current affairs. No matter the feeling and energy there was room for placing his signature on any moment and painting it.

THE SUNSET ISLAND Koh Lanta consists of two islands, Koh Lanta Noi and Koh Lanta Yai. Koh Lanta Noi is the smaller of the two and does not have tourist facilities. Visitors travelling by road from the mainland pass through the smaller island on the way to Koh Lanta Yai - the center of it all.
B
an Sala Dan village on the north side of the island is Lanta Yai’s commercial center and the pier where visitors arrive on the island. It is a row of shops, seafood restaurants on stilts, dive shops, tour operators, banks, and guest houses that cater to newcomers. The bulk of the Lanta beaches lie along the west coast – hence it’s often referred to as “The Sunset Island” – and can be reached by road. Khao Kwang, Khlong Dao, and Phra Ae have long stretches of white sand facing the Andaman sea, while Khlong Khong, Khlong Nin, and Ba Kan Tiang, and other smaller bays take in more dramatic views and are less crowded for swimming. Ba Kantiang Bay has spectacular crystal-clear seawater, soft white sand, romantic sunsets in utmost privacy. It’s the picture of a postcard, symbolizing a luxe hideaway in Lanta for relaxing in natural surroundings.
64
Known as Ban San Kau, this sea gypsy’s settlement is based on south-east Lanta Yai. It is there that an old clan of traditional Chao Ley try to preserve a disappearing way of life in this fast-developing island. Once called Ban Si Raya, Old Town was historically a commercial port for Chinese and Arabic trading boats that sailed between the ports of Phuket, Penang, and Singapore. Today it is a village with a few rows of stilted shop houses and home to an ancient community that was established on the island long ago. It’s a picturesque place dating back 100 years, from the old days of sea trading. Near the shacks along the coast, local fishermen still dock their longtail boats and make for an authentic snapshot of local life.

unplug in KOH JUM Geography brought electricity to Koh Jum late in 2009 as the island was in the direct path of the new underwater electric cable connecting Koh Phi Phi to the mainland. Now that Koh Jum is plugged-in, has it lost its reputable character that has attracted intrepid travelers over the past couple of decades?
We are pleased to report that Koh Jum is still as tranquil and laid back as it always has been. In fact, what is most noticeable are the lack of noisy generators found at most of the islands resorts. Folks come to Koh Jum to tune out; the island’s nature and culture dominate the minimal tourist infrastructure. The existing resorts on Koh Jum have their own family run character, ranging from the backpackers’ paradise to luxurious beach villas. Koh Pu Mountain is the dominant geological feature on the island at over 400 meters. It’s a great hike for the adventurous and a vital refuge of native habitat still harboring Asian Pied Hornbills and Burmese pythons. The three villages, Koh Pu, Ting Rai, and Koh Jum are situated on the back side of the island, amongst the mangroves while the resorts are located opposite, facing the open Andaman Sea. This division allows the villagers to remain authentic without a significant tourist infrastructure while the resorts are all located on the beaches. Koh Jum is predominately a large Muslim populated sub-district of Krabi, home to over 1,500 inhabitants. The locals of these villages engage mostly in fishing, rubber cultivation and the local crafts of cloth
70
weaving and painting or “batik” as it is known here.
While the north is mountainous, the south is comprised of dense jungle, cashew nut trees, rubber plantations, casuarinas, and nipa-palms. Since all the resorts face west, there are epic sunsets to be had all along the
island. The renowned Koh Jum Lodge is an excellent place to stay for a few days, and has superb views to boot. Access to the island is by longtail taxi boats which leave from the mainland at the port town of Laem Kruat.
Jum using the Krabi-Koh Lanta ferry which stops at two locations on Koh Jum, both of which are offshore so local longtail boats will come from the island to pick up passengers. The lack of any deep ports on the island keep the ferry boats out at sea and almost prevent large masses of tourists from overcrowding the island. Getting here is quite an adventure and this ends up defining the interesting community of resorts and visitors that have made this island their home and the place they return to year after year. Getting to Koh Jum can be very simple or a bit of a nightmare – it all depends on how much you know about it. This is where Krabi magazine can help. We recently took the trip to Koh Jum ourselves and have decided to share the adventure with our readers. There are two ways to get to Koh Jum by passing ferry or longtail boat. The ferries leave from Koh Lanta at 8am and from Krabi at 11am, and both stop as they pass alongside Koh Jum and signal to longtail boats to come and pick up visitors to land ashore at Koh Jum. Koh Phi Phi also has ferries which leave at 2pm and operate on the same principle as above.
There is now a songthaew you can take direct from Krabi Town to Laem Kruat. During the high season most visitors come to Koh www.krabi-magazine.com
The second way to get to Koh Jum is to go to the port town of Laem Kruat, from where you can catch a longtail boat directly to Koh Jum. This was our favorite of the two methods of travel. If you are driving, it takes about one hour to get from Ao Nang to Laem Kruat. You just head to Tesco Lotus and then continue until you see the large overhead signs which tell you to turn right for “Koh Jam”. This road will lead to the small locality of Laem Kruat, where you will find a large pier with boats going to Koh Jum. If you don’t have transport of your own, you can always catch a blue and yellow “songthaew” – the local buses that have benches in the back. On the side of the “songthaew” will be written – Krabi, Bus Station, Tesco, Big C, Laem Kruat. They are frequent and easy to spot. These buses will leave from all of these locations at intervals throughout the day and will take you directly to the Laem Kruat pier. The pier is a bit misleading. We waited at the end of the pier before realizing the longtail taxis were passing us by and docking at the mainland. We went back and followed our noses along past the shops until we saw a slipway with goods and people being unloaded. It was the second slipway we needed to get to “Moo Too,” the place on Koh Jum we were being collected from. If you know the name of the pier on Koh Jum you need to get to, just ask anyone in this area and they will direct you to the correct boat. We got on and soon were chugging along through the mangroves with a boat full of happy local Muslim women that looked as if they hadn’t changed a bit since 1925. We arrived at Koh Jum just 45 minutes later, paid our 70 baht fare, and were taken by “taxi” (a battered old pickup truck) through the winding dirt track until we reached our destination resort. Give it a go and you will see a different side of Thailand from years gone by. Well worth the experience.

WHAT DOES the term “ RAI “ MEAN ? A rai is a unit of area, equal to 1 square sen or 1,600 square metres (40 m × 40 m), and is used in measuring land area for a cadastre or cadastral map. Its current size is precisely derived from the metre. The rai equals 4 Ngaan or 400 Tarangwa a.k.a. square wa. Usually used in Thailand, the Rai, the Wah, the Ngaan and the Tarangwa are recognized by the International System. Converting Rai and Wah can be complex and can create legal issues when people do not understand what it is that they are signing at the contract stage. Ensure that you understand what you are buying and how best to deal with this. These are the basics for land conversion in the land measurement system in Thailand. Thailand does not have an Imperial or Metric system. -1 sq. wah = 4 sq. m. 1 acre = 2.471 rai or 43,560 sq. ft. -1 ngan = 100 wah (or 400 sq. m.) 1 hectare = 6.25 rai or 10,000 sq. m. -1 Rai = 4 Ngan (or 1600 sq. m.)
