AO NANG BEACH at 20km from Krabi Town is the most developed of Krabi’s beaches; a long stretch of white sand with limestone karsts as a backdrop. All of your accommodation, shopping and service needs are found here. This is the hub from which to plan your trip at sea and to the nearby islands on a typical longtail boat. NOPPHARAT THARA BEACH just around the corner from Ao Nang, is 3km long yet still undeveloped, with only a few resorts and bars. Attractive because of its natural setting, this is where local youngsters and families gather at sunset and on weekends with picnics. Savour some local Muslim snacks at the beach stalls, or fill yourself with seafood in the local restaurants at the very end of the beach, near the Noppharat Thara National Park headquarters. At low tide, walk out together with millions of small crabs on the sandy pathways to the small islands near the beach. KLONG MUANG BEACH is a further 20km away from Ao Nang; it is the up-market side of Krabi, the place to be if you are after a peaceful holiday. Catering to families and couples, it is here that you really get that well deserved repose, surrounded by pristine nature. RAILAY AND TONSAI BEACHES are split and separated from Krabi and Ao Nang by monumental limestone mountains. Railay has two sides, east and west, and its settings are simply marvelous: crystal clear waters, pure sandy beaches, lush mountains, and rocky islands emerging from the sea. Both beaches are known the world over for their majestic climbing routes. They can only be reached by boat, a 15-minute ride from Ao Nang or 30 minutes from Krabi Town. Enjoy a cocktail in one of the beach bars, visit the Phranang Cave, challenge yourself on a rock climbing or cliff jumping course (yes, into the sea!), hike the limestone massif to a lagoon and a viewpoint, or simply chill out.
KOH LANTA BEACHES have a wide selection of resorts for all tastes and pockets. Lanta Yai island has long stretches of gleaming white sandy beaches and shallow emerald waters. Lined with tropical vegetation, a private spot is never more than a short walk away on a southern beach at Lanta Yai. TUBKAEK BEACH Another real place to hide away; long, clean and powerful, the area boasts breathtaking views over the Koh Hong archipelago and provides for wonderfully charming sunsets. From Tubkeak beach you can venture inside the National Park and try the nature trail to one of the most spectacular viewpoints in Krabi. KOH PODA This is the iconic island of Krabi and the first and most dramatic one you seem from Ao Nang beach. Hop on a longtail boat - the local wooden boats with their picturesque prow and sail away surrounded by turquoise waters. CHICKEN ISLAND This should be next on your list as it is right next to Koh Poda. From the right angle when passing Chicken Island (Koh Chicken) you can catch a glimpse of a chickens neck and head, some would argue more like that of a turkey but it’s up to you. You know those postcards with people walking on a sandy isthmus that connects to another island? Yep, here the second island is Koh Tub and is only accessible at low tide. THE KOH HONG This island archipelago demands everyone’s attention as it is one of the highlight of Krabi province. The Archipelago, a group of limestone islands with many a hidden caves and lagoons make it perfect for snorkeling and exploration. Make sure you stop at Lading island after Koh Hong as it is much less visited and sports a blend of both lush jungle and tropical waters. KOH PHI PHI Private bays, limestone cliffs, waters rich in marine life and caves where swallow’s nests are harvested are all here on the island that Leonardo Di Caprio once rolled his hot bod in while filming “The beach” at the now iconic Maya Bay.

KOH JUM & KOH SIBOYA Both are unspoiled tropical hide-aways that have a unique atmosphere. Tune in to the slow culture here, imbibe the peace, and recharge your batteries with the soundtrack of lapping waves. KOH LANTA the developing island at the southern end of the province known for its prime sunset viewing spots , heaps of activities, and glimpses into sea gypsy life, is where you will meet nature and tradition. It’s also a National Park area that comprises many different islands surrounded by coral reefs, such as Koh Ngai, Koh Mook and the remote Koh Rok. LIMESTONE MOUNTAINS or karsts characterize most of the inland Krabi area, the most spectacular being the crags of Sai Tai. Susaan Hoi is a 40 million year-old seashell cemetery; once a large swamp where freshwater crustaceans proliferated, today it’s home to 40 centimeter thick, shell encrusted limestone slabs, a geological uniqueness not far from Ao Nang. KHAO PHANOM BENCHA NATIONAL PARK at 20km from Krabi Town, comprises waterfalls, streams, lush forests and caves. It is home to all kind of flora and wildlife and to the highest mountain in the region from which it takes the name. One of the features of the park is Huay Toh Waterfall where water runs down onto several huge pools that you can swim in. TARNBOK KHORANEE NATIONAL PARK in the north of the region, consists of limestone mountains, verdant tropical forest, caves and beautiful islands. It is well known for its different species of trees growing around a large natural crystal clear pool, and for the hundreds of birds’ species. SA MORAKOT, THE EMERALD POOL is a natural wonder: a pond of turquoise water with an average temperature of 30-40C, fed by a hot spring in the middle of the jungle. HOT SPRINGS Hot Springs of Klong Thom, natural Jacuzzis that melt away tensions and relieve body and mind with the mineral enriched waters falling into rocky ponds.

NEWS Thick Indonesian haze hits southern provinces Thick Haze has affected the navigation of small fishing trawlers and taxi boats in the south and caused health concerns on land. “The problem comes from forest fires in Indonesia,” the Songkhla-based office of the Natural Resources and Environment Ministry said yesterday. “Air-quality tests show the amount of small particulate matter up to 10 microns in diameter was up to 126 in Phuket,” it said. The fires caused smoke that was blanketing Satun, Phang Nga Phuket and Krabi Provinces. Residents in the affected provinces have been advised to avoid outdoor activities, to keep abreast of official
news and to see a doctor immediately if any health condition develops. Dr Witoon Luangdilok, the public health chief of Trang province, said the haze had continued for two days. “A number of people have reported eye and nasal irritation. People could get free facial masks from tambon-level health promotion hospitals in their home-towns. They have to wear it when they go outdoors for health reasons,” he said.

In Krabi, a local marine office reported that the visibility at sea international convention which identifies wetlands that needed to be conserved to sustain global biodiversity. Residents are also worried that the coal plant could also harm the health of the local population. Groups opposed to the project have claimed that the public hearing conducted by the project’s backers covered only a small number of people.
COAL POWER PLANT IN KRABI Many residents of Krabi are opposing the government’s plan to build a coal plant close to their homes. The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), an electric power transmission and generation authority owned by the Thai Ministry of Energy, proposed in

early 2014 to build a coal-fired power plant with a capacity of 870 megawatts in Krabi. Furthermore, it recommended the construction of a coal seaport in Nuea Khlong Krabi residents have immediately expressed concern about the possible detrimental impact of the plant to the local environment. They pointed out that the shipment of a large amount of coal and the construction of a massive port could harm the coastal area of Krabi, which is a protected RAMSAR site. RAMSAR is an
According to the regulations of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, any power plant project slated for more than 100 megawatts of capacity must first be subjected to an Environmental and Health Impact Assessment (EHIA) before it is granted a government license. Local electricity producers also asserted that there are other options than coal like the use of renewable energy. They also wanted the government to address the lack of connectivity grids which is a major obstacle in delivering electricity across the country.

Dusit Krabi focus on China and Middle-Eastern markets DUSIT Thani Krabi Beach Resort has revealed its new marketing strategies to cash in on an increase in international arrivals, primarily targeting the China and Middle East markets. General Manager, Urs Lienhard, said China and the Middle East were emerging markets not only for the hotel but also for Krabi Province and other major tourist destinations such as Phuket. India is also one of the most important markets, as arrival numbers from that country have been increasing dramatically over the past five years. “Tourism in Krabi province was not affected by the recent bomb blast in Bangkok. The number of international arrivals into Krabi is increasing as more people discover its attractions and overflows from Phuket increase,” he said. To attract people from China, the hotel will focus more on social media and online marketing. It has created a Chineselanguage Facebook page to reach out to potential Chinese guests. The hotel has also hired two Chinese representatives to work with Dusit’s office in China. Furthermore, information materials and menus have been translated into Chinese. For the Middle East market, the hotel will work more closely with travel agents. As for India, the hotel is promoting an Indian restaurant and facilities, and a marketing team to handle wedding events. The hotel will also focus on the MICE (meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions) business to fill up its three meeting rooms. Lienhard said Dusit International took over management of Krabi Beach Resort in July, replacing Sheraton, which had run the property for a decade. “Dusit is reintroducing the hotel to global markets with an emphasis on ‘Thainess’ and service. The Dusit brand is already known in Asian countries but less so in the West, especially in the United Kingdom and Germany,” he said. The hotel expects to increase room rates and occupancy rates during this year’s high season. The average occupancy rate is expected to exceed 80% this year and should be more than 85% next year. It has been reported that the hotel is planning more investment, including on villas and to expand facilities such as the health club and function rooms.

SKÅL TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH! Shortly after the inauguration of the first joint Swedish and French air service between Stockholm and Paris in 1932, a group of travellers from the French capital were invited to make an exploratory flight over the new route. The welcome they received in Stockholm led to many lasting friendships. Realizing the importance of closer relationships, those who made the flight to Stockholm were determined to find a permanent organization whose primary aim would be the creation of goodwill and friendship in travel and transportation circles throughout the world. The “Association Internationale des Skal Clubs (AICS)” was created on 28th April 1934 in the Hotel Scribe and Florimont Volckaert became its founder President who is considered the “Father of Skal”.
the hospitality industry joined to form the first of Thailand’s Skal clubs in Bangkok. This rapidly attracted more members and their interest has been extended to cities such as Pattaya and Chiang Mai. The movement started to gain more and more fame and had spread outwards Phuket, Samui, Hua Hin and most recently Krabi. The Krabi branch of Skal International has been in place for more than one month now and has attracted so far about 30 members ranging from resort and hotels managers, luxury villas and restaurants owners. In order for the members to stay in touch, a regular monthly dinner will be held in local hotels or restaurants owned or managed by the members. This is the best way to discuss the travel and tourism industries, network and engage in community activities.
Skål is a professional organization of tourism leaders around the world, promoting global tourism and friendship. It is the only international group uniting all branches of travel and tourism industry.

Today, the organization has approximately 20 000 members in 480 clubs throughout more than 80 countries. Most of these club’s activities occur at a local level, moving up through National Committees under the umbrella of Skal International, headquartered at the General Secretariat in Torremolinos, Spain.
Skal International is governed by an Executive Committee of six members elected by delegates to an annual General Assembly held during the Skal World Congress hosted by a different country each year so that members are allowed to see for themselves the travel and tourism potential all around the world. ELISABETH,
THE FAIRY GODMOTHER OF KRABI’S CHILDREN On the 26th of December 2004, a devastating tsunami hit the South of Thailand and took away Natacha, the only child of Elisabeth Zana, who was diving in Koh Phi Phi when it happened. She was a journalist, who loved Asia, its culture and fought to protect its environment.
of NAT and Natacha’s godmother) and Jean Claude Zana (Secretary of NAT and Natacha’s father/ Elisabeth’s husband), Elisabeth officially founded NAT Association on the 15th April 2005 in order to help children orphaned by the tsunami.
In January 2005, when Elisabeth came to Krabi searching for her daughter, she knew at that time that she was going to come back to help all the children who suffered from the tsunami and she did. With the help of Carole Sédillot (President

She also met Khun Gowit Thongtip who took her to Krabi’s countryside in order to visit a small school threatened with closure in Ban Kuan Kojan, a village of Nuah Klong District where seventeen orphans were about to see their school shut down. From that moment, her challenge was to enable their education and build a new school from scratch in accordance with Thai Culture. Elisabeth made a happy encounter, Khun Joan, born and raised in Ban Kuan Kojan. An English teacher categorically opposed to the closing of her school who helped her in this humanitarian project. Since then, they have developed a real friendship and learned how to count on each other. www.krabi-magazine.com
In order to make the children feel comfortable, the school has been painted and refurbished. NAT bought a TV so that children can benefit from the Royal school program broadcasted on television in every school of the country and then purchased a computer connected to the internet. These were the first steps of the school’s renewal. In January 2006, NATACHA PRIMARY SCHOOL arose with two directors, Elisabeth and Khun Teeraphon Chumani who comes from a teaching family and is well integrated in Krabi’s Administration which really helped in developing the school and assuring the Government’s involvement; and 8 female primary school teachers including Khun Joan.

As part of the renovations, NAT Association installed in 2011 a system to filter the water so children and teachers can use tap water instead of bottles and carboys. The next project of the Association regarding refurbishment is about renovating the whole electricity system and extending the library which is crucial for children’s instruction.
SCHOOL AND LEISURE AT THE HOSPITAL: In 2007, Elisabeth met with Krabi Hospital’s manager and offered to create a learning and games room dedicated to all the sick children of the hospital with a teacher that would come once a week and a clown that would perform once a month. NAT Association has set up the room
in 2008 and equipped it with computers, video games, a TV and a lot of toys. When the tsunami struck, the man playing the clown was living and working in Bangkok, but he dropped everything and went to Koh Phi Phi to entertain the children while authorities were

This program is so successful that for the past two years, it has also been set up in a center for mentally handicapped persons in Krabi and several schools all around Krabi.

SPONSORSHIP NETWORK: NAT Association helps children in great difficulty, to this day, eighty eight are fostered by sponsors coming from Thailand, France, Italy and Switzerland. Most of the time, sponsors go to Natacha School to meet the kids and visit their families to learn more about their living environment. NAT Association makes sure that the money is used wisely for the children’s wellbeing and handles the follow up by collecting the invoices.

The first temple of Ao Nang was inaugurated on July 23rd with the presence of Somdej Praputtajarn (Sanit Chuan Panya) the abbot of Wat Traimit Withayaram Worawihan who got a ranking promotion on the 5th June 2015 as the Head Monk Dean of the East Region and the Committee of Sangha Supreme Council of Thailand at Ubosot Wat Traimit Withayaram Worawihan, Sampantawongse, Bangkok. Located outside Ao Nang, just after the corner of the 3-way junction going to Ao Nam Mao, you can’t miss the Sri Development holy sacred theology and its beautiful golden statue, Loki State Ice Princess Bodhisattva Guan Kim that overlooks Ao Nang. In Mahayana Buddhism, bodhisattva is the Sanskrit term for being with bodhi (enlightenment). A bodhisattva is anyone who, motivated by great compassion, has generated bodhicitta, which is a spontaneous wish to attain buddhahood for the benefit of all sentient beings. A bodhisattva is one of the four sublime states a human can achieve in life (the others being an arhat, buddha and pratyekabuddha).

To reach the 9 meters tall and 4.9 meters wide statue and observe it closely, you will have to climb the 258 steps that lead to it. On your way to the top you will enjoy the decorations that light up the ascension by bumping into pink elephants, a dragon boat and even an eagle. Once you arrive to the top, you have the opportunity to take in the amazing view of Krabi’s limestone cliffs and palm trees. At the foot of the stairs, a three floor pavilion has been built to welcome those who come to worship and house the monks. The first floor is designed to offerings, make merit and blessing ceremonies and sell Thai Buddhist amulets. The second floor is for meditation and the third floor has been built to accommodate Sanit Chuan Panya when he comes to the temple. This five million baht construction project is well enshrined by the monks whose mission is to protect this sacred contemplation site.

How to Behave
Customs of Thailand The Head
It’s believed to be the mot sacred part of the body so never touch a Thai person’s head ever. Stop ruffling that little kid’s hair.
Smile !
Thailand is the ‘Land of Smiles’, and it’s an important part of the culture and greeting. Smile, don’t lose your temper, keep a calm voice. Accept what people offer you with grace. If you don’t like something, carefully decline and smile.
Buddha
Sacred and revered. Even if it’s a ruined, half destroyed statue of the deity, treat it with the utmost respect and you will shine in the eyes of the Thai. Common sense here, don’t clamber up onto one or mimic a pose for a photo. Snap a shot respectfully and if possible, ask a monk if it’s okay.
Kissing
Public displays of affection are a big no-no all over Thailand. Maybe the restaurant is not the best place for smooching.
Shoes
This ones easy, remove your shoes or sandals at any indoor space. When in doubt, look for other shoes at the doorway and follow suit. Resorts may be an exception, but absolutely take them off at a Wat (temple) and any Thai’s home.
The King
The Thai Royal Family is revered and there can be no worse « faux pas » than to joke about the King or any Royal Family member. Some have actually been thrown in jail for making « uncivil remarks » about their beloved leader. It’s serious business, so take note. Use common sense and you’ll be fine.
“LONG LIVE THE KING”
Temple
Ladies, please cover your chests and shoulders, and wear bottoms that go past the knee. Women should never touch or hand anything directly to a monk. Anyone should donate some money if possible, to help maintain the temple. Again, use your common sense and you’ll be a star in Thailand.
WAI
A slight head bow and prayerlike gesture with the hands is the traditional greeting, thank you, sign of respect and goodbye. Wai-ing will certainly light up some smiles of appreciation.
Dress
It’s one of the greatest ironies of life that the one place in Thailand with the best beaches and scorching sun is also one of the most conservative when it comes to dressing. The predominantly Muslim population here in the South can take real offense to half naked bodies wandering into their shops and restaurants. You deserve that tan -we know- but you can’t tan indoors anyway (at least not naturally).
Haggling
Thailand is an excellent place for bargains and haggling is expected amongst customers and vendors. Remember to take the « softly-softly » approach and don’t be aggressive. Smile, ask for the best price, and take it from there. Keep calm and never loose your temper.
EXOTIC FRUITS OF THAILAND A visit to Thailand isn’t complete without experiencing some of the foods here. The tropical fruits are abundant, delicious and fascinating! While you are here, be adventurous and give some of them a try!
DRAGON FRUIT (GAO MUNG GORN) This is probably the most dramatic-looking of all the Thai fruits, and the outside appearance gives NO indicator of the inside appearance at all! The fruit is a bright pink oblong shape with pointed green leaves springing out from all sides – hence the name, as it DOES look a little dragon-like. Cutting it open down the middle of the fruit will display a white center, filled with tiny black dots. To eat this fruit, scoop out the filling with a spoon. This fruit is moist, sweet, crunchy and delicious! When picking out dragon fruit, “the redder the better” for ripeness!
G U AVA (FARANG)
ROSE APPLE (CHOM-POO)
SAPODILLA (LA-MUT)
Looks like a bumpy/wrinkled green apple. Cutting guava is very pretty. Slice ½ way into it, wedge-like, and then slice all around the guava this way. We pulled out the wedges and ate them this way. This doesn’t taste like the Hawaiian fruit. Hawaiian guava fruits (called strawberry guava) are pink and sweeter. These were somewhat bland, crunchy and starchy – a little pear-like.
This looks like a cross between a thin red pepper and an apple. Cut them into lengthwise slices and eat the thin pieces. These are delicious – sweet and crunchy. They are also called Bell or Mountain Apples
This fruit looks like a large brown plum. The Thai way is to peel it with a sharp knife directed away from you and with the index finger just in front of the blade, guiding it along. You peel the fruit and then cut it through the middle in a zigzag fashion, for display. Lamut has a subtle flavor that isn’t particularly sweet, and yet seems to taste like brown sugar – if that makes any sense - It’s delicate and delicious!

JACKFRUIT (KHANOON)
LONGAN ( L A M - YA I )
MANGOSTEEN (MANG-KUT)
This is a fascinating fruit that comes in a huge spindly ball. Opening it up, you can pull out separate pods, which are around 3” long. These pods have large seeds inside that can be peeled, boiled and eaten with salt. The flesh of the fruit has a pungent taste and smell, somewhat crunchy and a little sour/starchy feel to it. Sometimes they are very sweet, and other times they are pretty bland.
Look like big brown grapes on a branch. They have a thin but hard shell that is easy to break open. The flesh is clear and very sweet with a pit inside. These are delicious but don’t eat too many at one time, as you can get cold sores or even a fever.
Mangosteen is a bizarre looking fruit with a round, deep purple shell. It has flavorful white flesh that is eaten in sections. This has a delicious, distinctive flavor that is also wonderful for juices. Mangosteen is becoming better known globally for it’s remarkable healing properties.
DURIAN (TU-RIAN)
LYCHEE (LINJEE)
R A M B U TA N (NGOR)
Covered by a red, roughly textured rind that is inedible but easily removed, the inside of a lychee consists of a layer of sweet, translucent white flesh with a grape-like texture. The centre contains a single glossy brown nut-like seed that should not be eaten.
The name is derived from the Malay word, rambut, meaning hair, which is a perfect name. The fuzzy, colorful covering of this fruit is unforgettable. Peeling this dramatic covering away reveals a firm, white, translucent flesh. It tastes like a sweet version of a pear, and is a lovely centerpiece for any dinner table.
One of the most bizarre fruits on earth. It is a rich, unique tasting fruit, but to some, it is a putrid-smelling, lousy excuse for a food. It has an extremely strong and unpleasant aroma, as well as a deadly look. Trying this fruit is a step into another world. Durian is quite expensive and due to it’s powerfully imposing smell; it is actually banned from many hotels, busses and planes. October | 2015

Thailand, The Land of Jewels Thailand is fortunate to have jewelry artisans following traditions dating back hundreds of years and substantial gemstone resources within the Kingdom. The country has developed its gold and silver craft with its wide use of precious and semi-precious stones, however diamonds have never been extracted from Thailand’s natural deposits.
Hundreds of years ago, the Thai people drew from their natural artistic flair and started incorporating rubies, sapphires and other local gem resources into jewelry.
Combining a deep ancient tradition, excellent craftsmanship and sophisticated modern technology, Thailand’s gems and jewelry industry sparkles among the world’s finest. With natural resources and superior production capability, the country is a leader in cutting and polishing, innovative design and quality control. Thailand has a rich history in gems and jewelry. Hundreds of
years ago, the Thai people drew from their natural artistic flair and started incorporating rubies, sapphires and other local gem resources into jewelry. Gold and silversmiths also began honing their skills. Boomtowns sprouted up, such as Chantaburi, famous for its rubies and sapphires. The dazzling red “Siamese rubies” hail
34
from there. Kanchanaburi Province is likewise known for extensive deposits of blue sapphires. As practitioners applied skills handed down through generations, a cottage industry formed in various provinces, with the business aspects gradually coalescing in Bangkok. Over time, modern advancements in manufacturing techniques helped the country gear up as a global production and trade center. Thailand is the world’s number one producer of silver jewelry and the fifth-largest center of diamond cutting. It is also one of the top five jewelry polishing centers along with Israel, Belgium, the United States and India and ranks 12th worldwide for colored stones. www.krabi-magazine.com
Thailand’s expertise in cutting and polishing precious stones and diamonds indeed is praised worldwide. Because of the high standard of workmanship, international gem and jewelry merchants send vast amounts of gemstones to the country for these precision processes. Besides stressing perfection, the local industry is also an innovator. Thai designers are continuously coming up with special looks and breakthroughs in the use of materials, whether for costume or fine jewelry. In recent releases, everything from wood and coconut shell to silk and leather can be seen combined with gold, silver and jewels. From materials to production, the Thai industry is serious about the promise of utmost quality, even at reasonable pricing. The quality of the gems and jewelry is examined stringently and guaranteed by the Asian Institute of Gemological Science, International Gemological Institute, GJIT and other internationally accepted local bodies. The local industry’s big event is the biannual Bangkok Gems & Jewelry Fair, which ranks among the top five such fairs in the world. For more than

Before Thailand was known as the ‘Land of smiles’ their beautiful gem stones had given Thailand the name of the ‘Land of jewels’. two decades, it has served as a grand showcase promoting Thailand as a gems and jewelry trendsetter. Using natural gem resources, local artisans began to incorporate such gems into silver and gold jewelry. Before, Thailand was known as the ‘land of smiles’ their beautiful gem stones had given Thailand the name of the ‘land of jewels’. Thailand jewelry, at least in relation to silver, is said to have been heavily influenced by a number of distinct minority nomadic groups who live in the North of Thailand near the Burmese and Lao boarders knows as the Northern hill tribes. These groups, which include the Karen, Lahu, Lisu and Meo, originally migrated from China over a hundred years ago. Due to their isolation in the North of Thailand,
they maintained their traditional knowledge of arts and crafts including the use of silver dating back several hundred years. While each social group or hill tribe had its own cultural and artistic traits, for the Karen tribe this included the wearing of silver rings, necklaces and bracelets which was and still is a distinct display of their identity and wealth. Thus, the skills and jewelry designs once practiced and found in the northern Thailand villages are now mass produced in places such as Chiang Mai and Bangkok. Thailand’s gold craft dates back to around the first Century A.D in the Chao Phraya region of Thailand where early Thai artisans were inspired by Hindu people from India, bringing with them early gold pieces and a knowledge of gold artistry dating back approximately two thousand years. These early Hindu settlers or the ‘Mon people’ are said to have heavily influenced the initial gold industry in Thailand including the use of rubies set in gold.

To ensure quality, look for the logo of the Jewel Fest Club (JFC)
2.
Purchasing an item from any JFC member store is a guarantee that the items are certified for their authenticity and high quality as well as offer value-for-money.
3. Here is some valuable advice and useful tips for tourists looking to buy gems and jewelry in Thailand
Check information about the shops you visit – as well as any details of the offered items before you make the decision to buy. Don’t be pressured into a hurried purchase.
4.
Ask the seller to write down the details of any purchased items on your receipt; such as, type of stone, color, weight, size, cut, and quality. The quality of course, makes a huge difference to the value of the stone.
5.
Always ask to see the stone in daylight even if they tell you that they have a daylight lamp in the shop.
36
6.
Ask for a certificate of authenticity with a laboratory report issued by authorized gemologists from the Gem and Jewelry Institute of Thailand (GIT) or the Asian Institute of Gemological Science (AIGS). Lab reports should be recent and not several years old.
7.
Purchase at shops with the sign “VAT Refund for Tourists”. Also note that the total value of goods purchased for a VAT refund must be at least 5,000 Baht.
8.
Keep the VAT refund form and the copy of the tax invoice along with the goods to present to the custom officials yourself at your port of disembarkation within 60 days of the date of purchase.
9.
Do not buy right away. Try to find information about the stones being offered, write it down, and, at the very least check this information on the Internet, especially the prices.
10.
Do not purchase products that are offered with surprisingly incredible deals. If a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is. www.krabi-magazine.com

Tropical Escape
HANG OUT IN KOH HONG
The small group of tropical islands is considered as one of the most beautiful of Krabi Province.
8.077641, 98.676854
Belonging to the National Marine Park, the four islands of the Koh Hong Archipelago are set against the spectacular backdrop of Phang Nga Bay with its rocky outcrops. The small group of tropical islands is considered as one of the most beautiful of Krabi Province. The Andaman Sea is dotted with hundreds of small limestone islands, called karsts, of various sizes. making them really quite unique. The karsts have been formed over millions of years as softer rock around the limestone is eroded creating gigantic pillars of stone. When you arrive, you will be dropped at the Hong Island artificial pier before the boats tie up. After paying the National Park Fee, it is a just a small walk down the floating pier onto the beach. If you walk a bit further along, you get to a beautiful sheltered cove with a white sandy beach called Pelay. A perfect spot to snorkel and there is always a good variety of small colorful fish. The entrance to the lagoon is quite narrow making the whole experience quite spectacular. The longtail and speedboats pass right into the lagoon where the water is at about waist height at low tide and perfectly calm. It is surrounded by mangroves with their incredible root systems. So once you are there you have only one mission, to kayak around to the back of the island and find your way into the ‘‘room’’ – a secret lagoon. You just have to paddle past the island’s majestic cliffs and duck through a lowhanging arch before nosing your way into the lagoon via a passageway that would be easy to miss if you weren’t looking for it. The Islands that make up the Hong Islands are: Hong Island Lagoon, an amazing lake with tree covered cliffs climbing up all around that you can reach by boat right into the very heart of the island. Hong Island Bay (Pelay beach), a beautiful beach with white sand, perfect for swimming and snorkeling. The bay is sheltered from the sea meaning the water is very calm and clear with good visibility for snorkeling.

Lading Island, traditionally this was a place where the locals came to collect the valuable vital ingredient for bird’s nest soup. Now, it is one of Krabi’s most amazing sights. There is a small beach but the stop there is more about the amazing rock formations and caves which you can see. Pakbia Island, is a labyrinth of caves eroded into the cliffs by the sea. There is a small but very nice beach on Pakbia. On one side of the island there is a rocky section in the beach shallows which is another great place for snorkeling and getting to see some fish. On the side with the boats parking, there is a longish beach trees with along the edge. This is also a great place to lie back and relax and ideal for kids who want to play. Daeng Island, is famous for its coral reef which, at low tide, can be seen clearly from the surface. This island is about half way between Ao Nang and Hong Islands. The island does not have a beach but as long as the waves are not too big it is a great place for snorkeling off the boat.

Feature Story
Once upon a time in Krabi According to archaeological evidence, particularly the many cliffs and caves that are marked with stone tools, ancient colored pictures, beads, pottery and skeletal remains, it is thought that the area of Krabi province has been home to Homo Sapiens since 25,000–35,000 B.C. There are two legends mentioning the meaning of Krabi. The first had it that villagers presented a large ancient sword (“krabi” in Thai) they discovered to the governor. They also did the same thing when a smaller one was found later, so they were placed crossing each other in the cave named Khao Khanap Nam. This was the origin of the province’s emblem. The second legend had it that Krabi the current generation copes with changing situation and responds to opportunities. Fifty years ago, Krabi represented nature through its vast and lush jungle and was an agriculture field specialized in growing rice and also a fishing platform with numerous sea products. Krabi was unknown from tourists unlike Phuket and Koh Samui at the time. Around 1975, Americans began to arrive in Krabi. Some of them belonged to the American Peace
was derived from a name of a local tree, Lumphi. The Malay and Chinese merchants made its pronunciation slightly corrupted and became Ka-lubi or Kho-lo-bi, which finally turned to Krabi. Krabi’s political and administrative structure was changed many times before becoming today’s Krabi Province. In 1901, Krabi center was moved from Ban Hin Khwang to Pak Nam, the location of Krabi Town today. The transition from a far flung ghost town to a thriving tourism center took a surprisingly short time. The future of Krabi depended on the people who live and work in the province and on how

southern Thailand. Around this time, the burgeoning tourism industry began to overtake agriculture and fishing to become the main source of revenue for the Krabi Province. The only restaurant in Ao Nang at this time was Wanna’s Place, owned by Khun Wanna and her husband Stephan. The following year, they built nine bungalows to welcome the tourists, called the Ao Nang Beach Bungalows, more known today as the L Living Resort which is now currently extending to fifty two rooms. Another accommodation was available at the time, Ao Nang Villa which started the business with only a few bungalows. The first hotel that was built in Ao Nang was Krabi Resort that opened with only a few rooms. These Corps who came to teach English and others were Baptists whose purpose was to extend Christianity. They used to stay in temples because they were no hotels or resorts at the time. After spending some time in Krabi they started to spread the word to their families and friends back in the USA about this undiscovered place and its beauty. At first, most of the foreigners that came to visit Krabi were American and little by little they began coming from all around the world. This is how, thirty years ago, Krabi started to become as popular as Phuket but with much less accommodation facilities and buildings - allowing the province to preserve its authenticity as a prime example of nature in were the three accommodations in Ao Nang able to welcome tourists. Ten years later, the city has been confronted with more and more backpackers coming to visit and explore the gem of the Andaman Sea which lead to a surge of development in the area. Even if Krabi were more developed, its administration wanted to keep its “genuineness, and this is why no high buildings were constructed - only low hotels and bungalows were built in order to promote Thai hospitality among the indigenous nature and palm trees. However, there was no airport at the time, all the tourists who wanted to come to Krabi had to land in Phuket and October | 2015

then come to Krabi by bus or car which was not convenient. This is why the major’s part of Krabi’s development was to build an airport. Krabi International Airport was constructed in the 90s and has become an important window for Krabi’s tourism. According to Khun Chuan Phukaoluan, the Head of the Krabi Developmental Policy Advisory Committee, eighty years ago the population of Krabi was just over four thousand. “There were many more wild animals in our vast jungles, to go to Bangkok we had to travel via Trang. The wealthy people sent their kids to study in Penang which took three days to reach. Nowadays it takes only six hours” he said. And he added “I believe that a prosperous town needed an airport and pushed to have one around 1975-1976. The airport been increasing for fifteen years now, Krabi is more interesting for the investors than Phuket and Koh Samui because it remains less expensive despite everything. The real estate business is not the only industry interested in Krabi’s beauty - the film industry is also an important source of income for the province. A lot of movie producers come to Krabi to film scenes or even entire movies from all around the world. One of the first movies to be filmed in Krabi was Cutthroat Island in 1994 and starring Geena Davis and Matthew Modine. But the most famous movie that brought Krabi to the international stage was in 2000 the American movie “The Beach” was greatly expanded after 1991 in anticipation of the big tourism push. I invested in the first resort in Krabi at that time and now members of my original staff are valuable human resources for the Krabi tourism industry”. Nowadays, it seems to be more complicated to preserve the genuine side of Krabi because of all the investments made by Thai and foreigners, especially in the real estate business. More and more hotels and condominiums are being built. On the one hand it is a good way to attract tourists and offer them all the amenities that they need during their stay but on the other hand it compromises Krabi as a haven of nature and peace. Even if the prices have
46

days, and particularly after the release of the movie “The Beach”, Koh Phi Phi has lost its authenticity and has become very crowded. The island offers a lot of different accommodation options, from bungalows to five stars resorts. Some of the locals think that Koh Phi Phi has been ruined by tourist crowds and all the investments there. Krabi Province is being developed with a wide range of places to stay from small bungalows to five star prestigious resorts. Most accommodations are located around the beach areas of Ao Nang, Railay and Phra Nang with some small local hotels in the provincial capital, Krabi town. Over the past twenty years, Krabi has turned from a backwater village into a renowned province where public infrastructures starring Leonardo Di Caprio. The crew stayed in Krabi for 3 months which was a great opportunity for most of the hotels, restaurants and storekeepers of the area. One part of the movie was filmed in Krabi Town (to represent Khao San Road) and the other part, the major one, was shot in Maya bay in Koh Phi Phi. This movie has opened the Province to the world and made it famous thanks to scenes that highlight Krabi’s amazing treasures such as white sandy beaches surrounded by luxuriant vegetation and those now iconic limestone cliffs. Forty five years ago, the only way to go to Koh Phi Phi was by fishing boat. There were no passenger’s boats at the time such as longtail boats, speedboats or ferries. These have been improved to the point of being at the forefront of national development, especially the International Airport. “We are building a bridge between the two Lanta Islands and in the process of setting up Andaman University, the first University on the west coast of the Thai peninsular. An important agenda for the future is to build a community that knows how to live together, to cooperate and be responsible for the environment and nature conservation efforts to keep Krabi as the Emerald of the Andaman far into the future” said Khun Pichase Phanwichartkul, a Member of Parliament, Krabi Province

Welcome to Center Point Center Point has been the “place to be” of the nightlife in Ao Nang since 1999. It started as a small venue with a few bars and after a renovation in 2010 it became a modern entertainment complex where you can eat, drink, sing, buy souvenirs, enjoy exotic shows and even get a tattoo at the Cool Point Tattoo Club. Center Point’s building now oozes modernity with its brushed steel escalators and bright lighting.

The Sunset Island Koh Lanta consists of two islands, Koh Lanta Noi and Koh Lanta Yai. Koh Lanta Noi is the smaller of the two and does not have tourist facilities. Visitors travelling by road from the mainland pass through the smaller island on the way to Koh Lanta Yai - the center of it all. Ban Sala Dan village on the north side of the island is Lanta Yai’s commercial center and the pier where visitors arrive on the island. It is a row of shops, seafood restaurants on stilts, dive shops, tour operators, banks and guest houses that cater for newcomers on the island. The bulk of the Lanta beaches lie along the west coast - hence it’s often referred to name as ‘The Sunset Island’-and can all be reached by road: Khao Kwang, Khlong Dao and Phra Ae all have long stretches of white sand facing the Andaman sea, while Khlong Khong, Khlong Nin and Ba Kan Tiang and other smaller bays take in more dramatic views and less crowded for swimming. Ba Kantiang Bay has spectacular crystal– clear seawater, soft white sand, romantic sunsets in utmost privacy. It’s the picture of a postcard, symbolizing a luxe hideaway in Lanta for relaxing in natural surroundings. Known as Ban San Kau, this sea gypsy’s settlement is based on south-east Lanta Yai. It is there that an old clan of traditional Chao Ley try to preserve a disappearing way of life in this fast-developing island. Once called Ban Si Raya, Old Town was historically a commercial port for Chinese and Arabic trading boats that sailed between the ports of Phuket, Penang and Singapore. Today it is a village with a few rows of stilted shop houses and home to an ancient community that was established on the island long ago. It’s a picturesque place dating back 100 years, from the old days of sea trading. Near the shacks along the coast, local fishermen still dock their longtail boats and make for an authentic snapshot of local life.

UNPLUG IN Koh Jum Island is still the quintessential destination in Krabi province if you are looking for authentic Thai village life and development that is still a small footprint.
KOH JUM
Geography brought electricity to Koh Jum late in 2009 as the island was in the direct path of the new underwater electric cable connecting Koh Phi Phi to the mainland. So now that Koh Jum is plugged-in, has it lost its reputable character that has attracted intrepid travelers over the past couple of decades? We are pleased to report that Koh Jum is still as tranquil and laid back as it always has been. In fact, what is most noticeable are the lack of noisy generators at most of the islands resorts. Folks come to Koh Jum to tune out; the island’s nature and culture dominate the minimal tourist infrastructure. The existing resorts on Koh Jum all have their own family-run character, ranging from the backpackers paradise to luxurious beach villas. Koh Pu Mountain is the dominant geological feature on the island at over 400 meters. It’s a great hike for the adventurous and a vital refuge of native habitat still harboring Asian Pied Hornbills and Burmese pythons. The three villages; Koh Pu, Ting Rai and Koh Jum are situated on the back side of the island, amongst the mangroves while the resorts are located opposite, facing the open Andaman Sea. This division allows the villagers to remain authentic without a significant tourist infrastructure while the resorts are all located on the beaches. Koh Jum is predominately a large Muslim populated sub-district of Krabi, home to over 1,500 inhabitants. The locals of these villages engage mostly in fishing, rubber cultivation and the local crafts of cloth weaving and painting or ‘batik’ as it is known as here. While the north is mountainous, the south is comprised of dense jungle, cashew nut trees, rubber plantations, casuarinas and nipa-palms.

Since all the resorts face West, there are epic sunsets to be had all along the island. The renowned Koh Jum Lodge is an excellent place to stay for a few days, and has superb views to boot. Access to the island is by longtail taxi boats which leave from the mainland at the port town of Laem Kruat. There is now a songthaew you can take direct from Krabi Town to Laem Kruat.
During the high season most visitors come to Koh Jum using the Krabi-Koh Lanta ferry which stops at two locations on Koh Jum, both of which are offshore so local longtail boats will come from the island to pick up passengers. The lack of any deep ports on the island keep the ferry boats out at sea and almost prevent large masses of tourists from overcrowding the island. Getting here is www.krabi-magazine.com
The second way to get to Koh Jum is to go to the port town of Laem Kruat, from where you can catch a longtail boat directly to Koh Jum- this was our favorite of the 2 methods of travel. If you are driving, it takes about one hour to get from Ao Nang to Laem Kruat. You just head to Tesco Lotus and then continue until you see the large overhead signs which tell you to turn right for “Koh Jam”. This road will lead to the small locality of Laem Kruat, where you will find a large pier with boats going to Koh Jum. If you don’t have transport of your own, you can always catch a blue and yellow “songthaew” - the local buses that have benches in the back. On the side of the “songthaew” will be written – Krabi, Bus Station, Tesco, Big C, Laem Kruat, they are frequent and easy to spot. These buses will leave from all of these locations at intervals throughout the day and will take you directly to the Laem Kruat pier. Now, the pier is a bit misleading. We waited at the end of the pier before realizing the longtail taxis were passing us by and docking at the mainland. Then we went back and followed our noses along past the shops until we saw a slipway with goods and people being unloaded. It was the second slipway we needed to get to “Moo Too”, the place on Koh Jum we were being collected from. If you know the name of the pier on Koh Jum you need to get to, just ask anyone in this area and they will direct you to the correct boat.
an adventure and this ends up defining the interesting community of resorts and visitors that have made this island their home and the place they return to year after year. Getting to Koh Jum can be very simple or a bit of a nightmare, it all depends on how much you know about it. This is where Krabi magazine can help, we recently took the trip to Koh Jum ourselves and have decided to share the adventure with all of our readers. October | 2015
There are 2 ways to get to Koh Jum- by passing ferry or longtail boat. There are ferries that leave from Koh Lanta at 8am and from Krabi at 11am, both ferries stop as they pass alongside Koh Jum and signal to longtail boats to come and pick up visitors to land ashore Koh Jum. Koh Phi Phi also has ferries which leave at 2pm and operate on the same principle as above.
We got on and soon were chugging along through the mangroves with a boat full of happy local Muslim women that looked as they hadn’t changed a bit since 1925. We arrived at Koh Jum just 45 minutes later, paid our 70thb fare and were taken by “taxi” (a battered old pickup truck) through the winding dirt track until we reached our destination resort. Give it a go and you will see a different side of Thailand from years gone by. Well worth the experience.

FILMING IN PARADISE Krabi has once again attracted the attention of yet another major feature film. Entering into the limelight back in 2001 with the release of the Leonardo DiCaprio blockbuster “The Beach”, Krabi has long since drawn the attention from a variety of filmmakers for its unique beauty and the variety of landscapes. This year Krabi was the main backdrop for the German production “Fack De Gothe 2”, the sequel to one of the most successful German movies in German film History; Fack De Gothe. Fack De Gothe 2 is a comedy shot with the many dramatic karsts of Krabi as the backdrop for the main setting and is set to be yet another blockbuster, not a surprise as the prequel was one of the most successful films in German history. Set over a range of locations throughout Krabi, the film tells the story of an ex-con/ teacher who decides to travel to Thailand with his class of misfits and have them learn from this foreign land. The class contains the standard jock, glamour girl, sassy-lassy, goofball, and nervous insecure boy. This group of silly, lost, yet funny and naive students are led by the charismatic hard-nosed, beer loving teacher Zeki, played by Elyas m’Barak and will encounter a range of scenarios from dangerous marauding local bandits looking to steal everything from the class to a small scale pot growing operation to some campfire joints and wild elephant riding.

The film’s cast is made up of up-and-coming German actors and actresses. One of whom (the lead actor Elyas m’Barak) has become an international star after the release of his second blockbuster “Fack de Gothe” and its international acclaimed reviews and popularity. His first blockbuster was coincidentally filmed in Krabi around 2011 and was titled “Turkish for Beginners”. The 2013 film, “Fack de Gothe” drew in a record 70 million euros to date making it one of the highest grossing films in German history. The movie recently filmed in Krabi, Fack De Gothe 2, is to be released in October after a one year long wait. It is expected to exceed the popularity and success of its predecessor.
If you are planning on visiting Europe anytime soon, the feature Fack De Gothe 2 will be aired throughout Germany, Austria, parts of Switzerland, Italy, The Check-Republic and Luxemburg on October 10th. This film comes out after the long awaited release and we sure are excited to see yet another major film that came to Krabi to capture its unique natural beauty.

Let’s make a plan, a healthy plan‌.

www.krabi-magazine.com
When we are preparing to take a vacation, apply for a new job, create something we’ve only imagined; we make a plan. Some begin their plan by brainstorming where they want to go, what they want to do and how they envision the outcome. Then most will begin to write their thoughts out, make detailed lists of options and strategies on how to accomplish this sought out endeavor. They may sit comfortably at their desk or on the couch with a cup of tea. Feeling satisfied and prepared that they are ready to begin the work needed to complete the task that lies ahead. Once these individuals have begun the process of taking each step needed to reach their goal, they often times realize that it can be a painstaking process and not an easy task to see this dream come to realization. However, they see that although the task may seem daunting, will take a bit of hard work and plenty of effort, they press forward; why? They see that ultimately they will reap the benefits offered at the end of this rainbow and that this is good for their lifestyle and overall wellbeing. The same can be said about
o u r health. We cannot assume that we are going to walk in total health without planning for it. In today’s society we are faced with thousands of easy options on the road of life. Many of these options are not for health but for convenience. Convenience has its place in aiding our lifestyle but we
“Thailand is an amazing getaway destination and the conditions here are perfect for a retreat” must use caution as to not let convenience stand in the way of a life filled with health. In all reality this takes work and planning. I know this may not be easy to swallow because we are now conditioned to have an easier lifestyle, where pleasure rules. But this is sound advice and why most people find themselves at the end of weight, sickness and disease issues. I’ve heard over and over again from clients that have come October | 2015
under my care that a lifestyle of convenience ultimately worked against them. They would say, “It was so much easier to just pick up something to eat from the fast food joint. I was too tired to work out after a long day at work. When I’m stressed I just want to do nothing and I turn to my comfort foods to be able to just zone out”. If you’ve had these thoughts or maybe have even said them yourself then you know that this is the cry of most in the Western world today. I’ve sat across the table from many with tears streaming from their eyes as they explain that they feel stuck and don’t know how to get out of their situation. It’s diminished their happiness, affected their work performance, relationships and has exploded their sense of pleasure. Many feel they have become enslaved within their own skin and need help to bring them to a place of peace and happiness. People are now turning to life coaches, nutritionists, personal trainers, spiritual mentors and health retreats. A place where you can be surrounded by likeminded people to unlock the doors that have kept you bound and to receive the keys to become the best you that you can possibly be. EGGPLANT BALLS
Recipe of the Month
The Greek diet is the perfect example of traditional Mediterranean eating. It’s based around a variety of colorful and flavorful foods that are high in nutrients and low in animal fats. The warm climate of Greece makes it ideal for growing vegetables and fruits, and these are eaten in abundant amounts. A myriad of colorful and flavorful vegetables form a fundamental part of Greek cuisine. These include tomatoes, garlic, onions, spinach, artichokes, fennel, lettuce, cabbage, zucchini, peppers and eggplant. If you are eager to taste this fine cuisine, you should definitely try the Greek Taverna in Koh Lanta at Klong Khong Beach that gives the island a Greek flavor. This little slice of heaven just in front of the beach will make you feel like you are in Greece. The food there is amazingly authentic, this is why we wanted to share with you the recipe of a delicious dish.
Ingredients: 500 gr of GREEK FETA CHEECE 100 gr of PARMESAN CHEESE 150 gr of BREAD CRUMBS 200 gr of EGGPLANT 50 gr of ANISE 100g of FLOUR 1 EGG
Procedure: In a medium-size pot, place one inch of water, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and eggplant. Cover pot and cook 15 minutes, or until eggplant is tender. Drain well. Chop the cooked eggplant. In a large bowl, combine eggplant, Greek feta cheese, parmesan cheese, ¾ of bread crumbs, anise, salt and pepper. Cool and chill 10 minutes in the freezer. Place the flour in a bowl. Beat the remaining egg in a separate small bowl. Drop the mixture by heaping teaspoon fulls into the flour and coat completely. Then dip the eggplant balls into the beaten egg and coat the balls with the remaining bread crumbs. In a large skillet, heat vegetable oil and fry eggplant balls until they are heated through. From hearty stews to warming soups and simple side dishes, traditional Greek food combines the freshest of ingredients from land and sea to create a highly appetizing and healthy cuisine. We would like to thank Spiros, owner and manager of the Greek Taverna, and his friendly staff for their warm welcome and their delicious food.
