GOT BALLS? ARCHER

ARCHER

Archer uses ball terminals in both the lower and uppercase forms.

FEATURE OVERVIEW

“A font that’s friendly without being silly, and attractive without being flashy…well-mannered, easy to work with, and inviting to read.”

But as marvelous as so many of those slab serifs were, sadly they were let down when it came to lighter, or more usable text weights. It is Archer that stood out, with H&FJ concentrating on the lighter

half of the spectrum, eight weights offering a delightful range of contrast, but never venturing heavier than bold. Making a text face distinctive with a clear personality that can scale right up to display sizes is a mammoth task at the best of times, but a slab? Yet here it is; with its judicious yet brave use of ball terminals, and blending

geometry with sexy cursive forms, all brought together with the kind of historical and intellectual rigour you fully expect from this particular foundry, Archer succeeds where others falter. I only hope that in its use out in the wild (and away from that jailbird Martha Stewart) people give it the same level of thought.

ARCHER

STRUCTURE Archer is a geometric or neo-grotesque slab serif, one with a geometric design similar to sans-serif fonts. It takes inspiration from mid-twentieth century designs such as Rockwell. The face is unique for

combining the geometric structure of twentieth-century European slab-serifs but imbuing the face with a domestic, less strident tone of voice. Balls were added to the upper terminals on letters such as C and G to increase its charm. Italics are true italic designs, with

flourishes influenced by calligraphy, an unusual feature for geometric slab serif designs. As with many Hoefler & Frere-Jones designs, it was released in a wide range of weights from hairline to bold, reflecting its design goal as a typeface for complex magazines.

Old-style figures

Lining figures

0123456789 Old-style figures, also known as “ranging figures” or “non-lining figures,” are numbers whose shapes are designed to harmonize with the proportions and rhythm of the lowercase. Old-style figures, intended for use in upper- and lowercase text, are essential when accompanying small caps; they’re especially useful for postal codes which contain both letters and numbers.

NUMBERICS

09

Lining figures, standard in all editions of Archer, are designed around the shapes of the uppercase. While lining figures are always recommended when setting in all caps, Archer’s lining figures have been designed to a proportion that makes them attractive and useful in upper- and lowercase setting as well—especially useful in newsier contexts where old-style figures might seem quaint.

Archer contains both old-style and lining figures, each with a set of matching punctuation, plus tabular figures and fractions for setting charts and tables.

Fractions

Pro editions of Archer include readymade “case fractions” in denominations of halves, thirds, fourths, fifths, sixths, and eighths. Also included is a full set of numerators and denominators, all properly kerned to the fraction bar, for creating custom fractions. OpenType users will also find superscripts and subscripts included, useful for both footnotes and scientific formulae.

For each of Archer’s weights, we’ve designed a full set of tabular figures, built on a fixed width to ensure that columns of data align correctly. Tabular figures are included in both the Archer Pro editions and the Archer Complete package.

NUMERICS

Like letters, numbers are proportional: they vary in width according to their shapes, from the narrow 1 to the wide 0. These variations help numbers sympathize with the natural rhythms of the alphabet, making their appearance in text less conspicuous. But this practice introduces problems when used for tables, where the alignment of columns is paramount. Enter tabular figures.
