editor's note 2020 goals. We all made them. Then we were introduced to mayhem that goes by the name of Covid-19. After staying at home for what seemed like months, we slowly began life in our new normal. It seemed like our well-made plans could resume to an extent. Then in late June, the planner community experienced a shake-up what has been deemed "Plannergeddon" by IG users hosts Myra PÂ and Megan on Planners and Wine. (see our Planner's Corner for more info on that). Once again throwing devoted, brand-loyal planners into a tizzy! This year has definitely been like no other. The question is where do we go from here? Do we scrap all the plans that we made pre-Corona virus? I think that there's still time to make good on some of the promises we made to ourselves as well as to make some new goals before the year's end. We just have to be, well, creative! Our theme this month is goal-setting. Our resident organizational guru has a great strategy for tackling your never-ending to-do lists, and our social media goddess has curated some wonderfully functional (and beautiful) planner spaces from around the country that can help get those craft nooks in order. I hope that what you read and see will give you some inspiration and motivation to look forward to whatever is ahead in these uncertain times. We have a variety of ideas to help us all get back to where we long to be! Happy Planning! Keisha Greene Editor In Chief IG: DrinkCoffee.MakeStuff YT: Drink Coffee. Make Stuff

By Deatrice McFadden IG: Deeplannerbabe During the last month, the Black Lives Matter Movement has taken the Planner Community by storm. Dr. Ashley reached out to a few plannerbabes in the community who she admires. Not because of the color of their skin but due to the volume of their voices. She feels that each person has taught her something about the Black community that, as a Black woman, she was not aware of. Dr. Ashley appreciates the leadership, education, and resources that these individuals have relentlessly provided. As a thank you for their assistance with this initiative, Dr. Ashley has donated to the Core Group Inc, a non-profit organization that provides services to those in need in Central Mississippi. SPECIAL NOTE: The BLM spreads were among thousands that were created for an Instagram challenge created by IG influencers Queensfancyplans & katiedid_plans. Participants were asked to help bring awareness to the Black Lives Matter Movement by decorating a spread in black and white for the week of June 8-14, 2020. Included in the some of the spreads were uplifting quotes by inspiring black leaders as well as the names of those who have been lost too soon. LET'S TALK: GETTING REAL ABOUT YOUR 2020 VISION

By Tomeca Hardin-Howard IG CheAsyPlanning This is a get-real moment for me in writing this month’s article. I really wrestled with what I should and should not say. But, I thought about how I would appreciate hearing honesty and sincerity about what has happened in the planner community over the past couple of months. It’s also important to me that I remain positive no matter what I choose to speak on because, truth be told, I absolutely love our community. I will start with the business in May when applications opened for the Happy Planner™ Squad. At first, I talked myself out of it and then decided to wait until the last minute. Now when I look back at it, I really thought being on the squad would open doors to other opportunities, and I put my hope in all the wrong things. On May 25th, I heard that a live video was done and everyone who made the squad had already been contacted. The news crushed me inside. Nevertheless, I can say I love how they carried out the application process this year. It was so creative to ask for a video, and I do see more diversity on the squad this year. Now, one of the things that can happen when you feel rejection is that we start to channel our energy in different ways. For me, this year I chose not to stay down. No matter how I felt, I knew the right thing to do was to be happy for the new ladies and men on the squad and reach out to congratulate them. I decided that I needed to focus on my own goals and dreams. You know, create my own vision and dreams that I see my future and not allow disappointment to hang over me, dictating how I spend my days moving forward. The month of June brought about awareness to racial issues. This really is an uncomfortable topic to speak on because you seem to have to be careful about how you address certain topics in order not to offend people. Let’s get real: whether we speak publicly or in private, we do all have a stance. I chose to speak to my close plannerbabe friends

instead of speaking openly. But, I will say that Black Lives Matter. Period! I appreciated how the planner community came together in a positive way to support the cause by creating beautifully decorated spreads and participating campaigns like Black Tuesday. However, I was shocked when the different planner companies made statements about where they stood on the matter as a company. People got upset by certain posts that were made, and, so much backlash resulted from it, it started to divide the planner community. Overlooking the good, some people just chose to pick a side and run with it. It appeared that some did not understand that once you put things out into the universe that is the Internet, you can’t take those words or actions back. Again focusing on the positive, I saw that several companies gave money to the cause as well as made sure that they posted on their account feeds how they supported the Black community. One major company decided it needed to take a break and reflect. That was a bold statement in itself. It will be interesting to see what happens when they decide to relaunch. Also, in June there was the mind blowing announcement from the popular faces of the Happy Planner™. Several people made the decision to step down, retire, or move on. I remember getting a text message from a friend asking me what was going on, and, immediately, I did my research. You know how we do - going from account to the next to see each person’s statement. We all felt the same thing: for that to all happen in one day was huge. However, I appreciated Stephanie Fleming for having a live Instagram session to clarify why she chose to retire. She was honest and real. That took courage. Her honesty made me truly admire her and understand why she made her decision. It’s a big deal when you love something so much while at the same time you understand that in order for your company to go to the next level, you have to plan for growth and be willing to step aside to allow other people to be a part of that process. After giving over 20 years of your life to a business, making a decision like that can be scary. I really wish her much success moving forward and applaud her for new beginnings. Then, of course, people started to make decisions on whether to continue to use the product or not. As for me, I love the Happy Planner™ and will continue to use their products. I just made a decision to not over spend on the product anymore. I decided to

PAGE 17 PAPER PLANNER ESSENTIALS pick a line that I like-for instance, the Wild Styled collection- and purchase everything from that particular one. I have way too many planners that are not being used and are going to waste. I have given away many, as well. Now I am choosing to support different companies and use other planner products that I already have but never really use. I also want to support other planner companies because I, too, one day hope to create my own line. Now that the real talk is out of the way, I want to share some positive tips on how I processed everything through these challenging times. I hope these tips will help you as much as they have helped me. *Focus on the positive- Find ways to look for the good in everything. It’s so easy to get caught up in the hype of everything that is going wrong. Positivity produces positive energy and growth. *Create a new vision for the rest of 2020- Honestly we have to recognize that a world pandemic is serious, and Covid-19 has changed a lot about how we now live our day-to-day lives. How can we plan with so much uncertainty? Now that the economy has opened up and more people are going back to work, taking vacations, and preparing for school openings, we have a lot more to plan. *Support others in the planner community- There are many ways to continue to support one another during these times of adversity. Continue to post your creative projects. I know that it helped me when I felt stuck, like I could not create, and that is so not like me. But, I remember looking at feeds and thinking that planners were still continuing to post, make YouTube videos, etc. The world had continued to go on with Covid-19, and I needed to do the same. So thank you to all the wonderful people in the planner community who kept it moving when some wanted to shut down, including me. *Remember why you started planning- I have always been a planner and a lover of all things stationary. When I started my Instagram account my intentions were to just become good at taking my photos and posting. Planning for me is like having free therapy. It’s a way for me to express my creativity without words, per say. It relaxes me, and it is something I truly enjoy doing. I have met some of the most amazing people in our community because of it. I did not start planning to get on squads, PR teams, to make stickers, and so on. But since starting, I have grown, and I have been exposed to a lot more of what the planner community can offer. I am doing a lot more now than when I first started. *Self-reflection and healing is necessary- The reason why selfreflection is so important is because when we realize it is not all about us, we can begin to work on ourselves. I know that I have several areas in my own life that I need to work on, and it is totally reflected in my creativity. I didn’t realize it until Covid-19 shut the world down. I thought about my profession, how I live, how I spend, and so much more. In many ways having time to reflect on a lot of things have just really helped to put into perspective what is important. What does that look like for you? Have your views changed on a lot of things? How can you make the rest of your life better? These are things to think about and come up with a plan to achieve your goals and improve your life. Guess what? Here's an idea: we can do this through journaling and planning.

You know how we do go from account to account to see each person’s statement, and I really felt like you all, for that to all happen in one day that was huge.
