WELCOME TO THE KSA The objective of this booklet is to give you valuable information about the Kitchen Specialists Association (KSA) and how it can help you make well-informed choices when looking to purchase a new kitchen. Thousands of people have kitchen installations completed successfully. How do they do it? The answer is proper planning – know what you want, what you can afford and use a reputable company.

An important role of the KSA is to protect the rights of the consumer. Because membership of the KSA is voluntary, consumers have peace of mind that by working with a KSA member they are working with a company that has chosen to be held accountable by an objective third party. As such the KSA can only offer the consumer assistance and protection if they choose to work with a registered KSA member and make use of the facilities put in place to afford them protection and security.

The KSA is the only body that exists to regulate and support the kitchen industry and its client. As there is no government regulation of the industry the KSA was started in 1989 so that the industry could self-regulate. The association was started with a fundamental mission and vision: • ‘To create a professional and stable trading environment in which the industry can prosper and consumers can enjoy peace of mind.’ • ‘To be a national organisation, representing the countries reputable kitchen manufacturers and associated product suppliers with the purpose of offering the public peace of mind by association as well as facilitating solution driven resolutions between members and consumers in areas of dispute.’ The KSA has three main stakeholders: the consumer, the kitchen manufacturer and suppliers to the kitchen industry. The needs of each of these stakeholders is intertwined and as you benefit and assist one, you do so the others. 2

Whatever the budget or spec the KSA has members who can fulfil your brief whether it be DIY, a locally manufactured product or an imported product. It is vital that, before appointing a company, membership is confirmed on the KSA website.

KSA MEMBERSHIP IS GRANTED IN THREE FIELDS: Kitchen members - Companies that manufacture and/or install kitchens - these companies are required to offer a minimum guarantee of one year on their product and installation. They must also have a showroom where you can view the quality of their product.

THE KSA HOLDING ACCOUNT: The KSA Holding account offers a safe place for disputed funds, deposits and final payments. It can be utilized at any time by agreement between both parties and at no cost to the consumer. Use of the holding account is the only way the KSA can afford protection to a customerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s funds.

Supplier members - companies that are affiliated to the kitchen industry by supplying a wide range of products and services to the industry. Stone & Surface Fabricators - companies that process and fabricate surfacing materials. By ensuring your kitchen company is using products supplied by a KSA registered supplier or fabricator you increase your safety-net for recourse in a dispute. The KSA has a strict code of ethics to which all members subscribe. The code covers manufacturing, installation and service standards. Membership is not easily awarded and memberâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s references are screened on their application. Members must have been trading for a minimum of three years, pass a reference check and be in good standing within the industry. All members must also agree to abide by any ruling handed down by the KSA or risk suspension or expulsion from the association. Return to Contents Page

This facility facilitates a sense of trust between the parties. It gives the kitchen company comfort in knowing that the needed funds are available, while allowing the customer to retain control of the release of those funds. Application forms to utilize the account as well as information on how the account works can be downloaded off the KSA website. It is an industry standard for kitchen companies to request a 50% deposit on signing of the contract, a further 40% on delivery of carcasses to site. The final 10% is payable on completion of the work and signing off of the job. 3

As an industry body the KSA provides advice and guidance. KSA staff are happy to assist both consumers and industry players with any questions or concerns they may have related to the industry or a new kitchen project. In the unfortunate event of a dispute arising between a KSA member and their client the incident can be reported by downloading the dispute registration forms off the KSA website. KSA undertakes to assist with any legitimate complaint that falls within the kitchens installation and guarantee period. The KSAâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s mediation service aims to provide a fair and equitable resolution to the problem without it having to turn legal. THE HIDDEN COSTS OF A KITCHEN REVAMP We all want to stay on budget when we embark on a build project. It is not as simple as it sounds. Hidden costs have a way of creeping in and throwing things off track. These are the typical pitfalls that throw most kitchen revamps out of budget: NOT ALLOWING FOR FEES – Kitchen designers, as with architects and structural engineers, charge a fee for their design work. It may not be astronomical, but if you want the drawings before work commences or before you have paid your deposit, you will be charged for the drawings.

STRUCTURAL CHANGES – Consumers tend to underestimate just how much the consultation fees from an industry professional (architect, engineer) are. If you want to make structural changes to the kitchen space, you will probably need to consult an architect. If the walls you want to remove are loadbearing, you may need the advice of a structural 8

engineer. There is also a fee to get your plans passed. Ensure that the builder you appoint is reputable – a bad build can add a fortune to your costs. PC AMOUNTS BEING TOO LOW – The PC amounts in quotes are often quite low, aimed at the entry level of a range. When you eventually get to choosing things like handles; and accessories like drawer inserts, pull outs and storage solutions, you may find that the PC amount in your budget does not cover the more upmarket product you now want. It is best to choose those accessories from the get- go so they are specified in your quote. This way you won’t find you can’t afford the final touches you really want. FLOORS AND TILES – You may have planned to keep your existing flooring and wall tiles, but once the old kitchen has been removed your kitchen company may advise you that this won’t work. There is quite a difference in the standard sizes and depths of modern kitchens to old ones. You may well find that the new kitchen can’t be installed successfully meeting up with the existing flooring and tiling. Ensure you research this first and make an allowance to re-tile or re-lay the flooring if needed. If you do re-floor, make sure you give good consideration as to how the flooring will work and match up with other flooring in the house. PLUMBING, ELECTRICS AND GAS – A kitchen revamp is the perfect time to update your electrics and plumbing. Give good thought to adding more accessible electrical points, ensuring your plumbing

guarantee. Many people also forget the installation fees. The kitchen company will not connect your appliances up for you. You will have to engage the services of a qualified electrician and/or plumber and /or gas plumber to do that for you. If you cannot prove that the installation was done by a qualified and registered person your guarantee may fall away and your insurance may refuse to cover you.

This all needs to be done before the new kitchen goes in, as it requires chasing of walls and sometimes floors (especially if you are putting in an island unit). If you are having a gas appliance, the gas line will need to be laid. If you only think about this once the kitchen is in, it could be costly and result in damages to the newly made kitchen.

DAMAGE BY OTHER TRADES – It is best for the kitchen company to only start work once other tradesmen are off site. We hear alarming stories of people standing on glass top hobs to paint walls or standing on newly installed stone tops to fix a light. If your kitchen is damaged by another tradesman on site, the cost to fix it will fall to you.

OUT OF SQUARE WALLS AND FLOORS – Very few homes have walls and floors that are perfectly in square. The kitchen company will design and manufacture, based on the assumption that your walls and floors are in square. All kitchen units are designed and made worldwide based on this premise. It is your job, as the homeowner, to check this and have the walls and floors re-screeded if needed. If the kitchen company arrives on site to find the walls and floors vastly out of square, they may have to make adjustments or even remanufacture to compensate for this. This will fall to your cost and will make the whole process a lot longer. CHANGES ONCE ON SITE – Ensure you fully understand the drawings and design elements that you sign off. Once manufacturing and / or installation has begun any changes from your side will result in costly remanufacturing as well as additional time. APPLIANCES – You should have a clear idea of what you are doing, appliance wise, by the time you sign off the drawings. The kitchen will be made to accommodate the appliance dimensions you give the kitchen company. So, if you have decided to keep your old appliances and then change your mind, this may mean remanufacturing to accommodate new ventilation and installation parameters. If you only have a vague idea of what you want appliance wise, and think you can slot something in at the end, it may prove costly. All appliances have specific installation instructions and dimensions that must be met to maintain the Return to Contents Page

THE KNOCK ON EFFECT – be prepared for the knock on effect. When one room has been renovated, it tends to make others look shabby and you may feel obliged to re-paint, re-floor adjacent rooms to keep them looking up to scratch next to your new kitchen. The best way to ensure you don’t get hit by a hidden cost is to ensure you have a solid contract with your supplier. Make sure it is clear in the contract that no changes or additions to the initial contract / drawings will be accepted unless they have been separately quoted on in writing and accepted in writing. 9

GET THAT HIGH GLOSS LOOK IN YOUR KITCHEN For several years high gloss has been a buzz word for the kitchen. The look offers a clean, sophisticated finish that has allowed it to remain a popular kitchen finish for several years. There is more than one way to achieve this look, and to adapt it to work with your tastes, to ensure your new kitchen stays on trend. When most people think high gloss, they think of a lacquered or duco paint finish. This was one of the first forms of high gloss that came onto the market. The door is made from a material called MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard). Several coats of either acrylic or water-based paint are then applied to the door in a methodical process. When done well, this process should leave you with extra coats on the edges of the door where water may drip onto the door or where bumps and scrapes are more likely to occur, making the door more durable. A well painted door will leave you with a smooth, highly reflective high gloss finish. Poorly sprayed high gloss doors can have inconsistencies in the gloss as well as small bumps in it that look like orange peel. It is vital that if you opt for a painted high gloss door that it is manufactured by a specialist in the field. Getting a good quality and durable finish in high gloss is not easy and not only depends on the quality of the material and paint, but also the skill of the team managing the process. If the doors are incorrectly dried and transported they can be easily damaged. 14

Remember that matching a paint colour 100% is next to impossible, particularly if you choose a darker or blended colour. If, down the road, you need to replace a door you can expect a slight colour variation. A benefit of a painted finish is that small scrapes and chips can be touched up, if needed, to keep your doors looking good. It is important to note that the type and quality of paint used by the manufacturer, will dictate the durability of your colour. White, in particular, can yellow over time if a non-yellowing paint is not used. Care and maintenance is fairly easy. Doors can be cleaned with a soft cloth, warm water and a mild soap like Sunlight. An Acrylic or PVC finish is achieved by bonding a thick, durable laminate to an MDF door. This type of finish has been around for many years, with the high gloss look coming into popularity as an upmarket finish more recently. Colour and pattern ranges can be vast, depending on the laminate supplier. Up until recently, high gloss laminates have only been available as an imported product, keeping it at the higher end of the price spectrum. However recently, locally manufactured product has come onto the market making the finish more accessible, price wise. The reflective nature of this product helps to create a sense of light and space in a room. It is perfect for a kitchen with low light, or a smaller kitchen, where you are wanting to create a sense of space.

Ensuring a good colour match later down the line is fairly easy, if the laminate remains in production from the primary supplier. The laminate, if from a good supplier, should not deteriorate over time and should retain its original brightness and colour if looked after properly. It can withstand prolonged exposure to ultraviolet light and, if edged properly, moisture. The trick to longevity in this finish is in ensuring the manufacturer knows what they are doing when they edge the door. If poorly edged, or a poor quality edging is used, then the doors ability to withstand moisture will be compromised as well as its aesthetics. A company who is experienced at handling high gloss laminates will know how to edge the doors in a seamless fashion. Maintenance is easy, with the doors only needing to be wiped down with a soft cloth, warm water and a mild detergent much like a duco door. Light scratches can be buffed out, however you should consult your supplier before trying to do this.

The last way of achieving that high gloss look is by using a high gloss wrap. Once again the basic door is made from MDF which can be cut and profiled if wanted. A foil, in this case the high gloss finish, is then heat pressed and glued onto the door using a vacuum technique. Check to see how your manufacturer makes their doors, as some opt to apply high pressure onto the door in the foiling process, as an added assistance to the bonding process. Wrap is a very durable product which is easy to maintain. Much like a laminate finish, if the foil is from a good supplier, there should be no Return to Contents Page

deterioration in colour or quality, and providing the main supplier does not discontinue the colour, getting a replacement door to match should be quite easy. Usually the wrap finish is more accessible, price wise, than the imported laminate or duco option. A wrap foil can also be placed over a profiled or shaped door, allowing this finish to be used for more ornate door designs than the laminate, which is more popular in a modern square line door. Maintenance is easy, once again using a soft cloth, warm water and a mild non-abrasive detergent. Whichever option you choose to achieve your high gloss look, it is important to utilise it in a contemporary manner, ensuring your new kitchen wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t date too quickly. In the past, designers suggested that whole kitchens were done in a single or dual tone high gloss finish. The single tone option (normally a neutral tone like white or off-white) remains a popular and sensible choice, particularly for small kitchens where there is a need for light and neutrality. More often now, we are seeing the high gloss option being paired with a timber finish or an ultra-matt finish. These combinations provide a beautiful contrast of tone, texture and colour and work very well together. Once you have your beautiful high gloss kitchen installed, remember the rule that applies to all kitchens: Keep it safe from water. Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t clean your doors with very wet cloths, donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t allow water to stand on the door surfaces and edges; and never allow a leak to go unchecked. BUILT IN OR FREE STANDING? WHICH COOKING APPLIANCES TO CHOOSE. For so many people making a choice about what appliances they want comes pretty far down the list when they start planning for a new kitchen. But why? Appliances are one of the more expensive items in your kitchen that have both an aesthetical and functional impact. Kitchen designers want to know what you are choosing, appliance wise, as this helps them with both their design and their plans for proper ventilation and manufacturing of the kitchen. With the explosion of TV cooking shows, more focus has been placed on the cooking appliances. These not only have to be practical â&#x20AC;&#x201C; catering to all your visions of being a Nigella or a Marco, but

they must also add an aesthetical element to the kitchen and hold their own as a feature. The big question then becomes, do you opt for freestanding or built-in? The choice between built-in and freestanding is more difficult now than ever before because of the vast variety for you to choose from. Ultimately, in making the decision, you need to think of three things 1) your budget, 2) you, your family and how you like to cook, and 3) what look and feel are you trying to achieve in the kitchen.

YOUR BUDGET? There are affordable options available in both freestanding and built-in, but the general thought is that you get more for your rand when you look at freestanding. This is primarily because of the development of the 90cm range cooker. If you like to cook, this option offers you a superb combination of 5-6 plates or gas burners and a large 90cm oven. However, you must give thought to the fact that you will use more electricity heating up the oven than you would with a 60cm unit. With built-in, you have to purchase and pay for two separate appliances, a hob and an oven, but with freestanding you get the two units in one and hence only paying for one. Choosing built-in over freestanding also has budget implications for the kitchen. Built-in appliances need cupboards specifically built to house and ventilate them. The extra materials will push the manufacturing costs of the kitchen up. There will also be the added expense from your

Most built-in appliance ranges have multiple combinations available, allowing you to have two separate ovens, one of which could also be a steamer or a microwave.

If you opt for a gas/electric combination the oven usually requires a 15amp plug, which you can do yourself, and the hob section would require a visit by a gas plumber.

YOU, YOUR FAMILY AND HOW YOU LIKE TO COOK? The fact that a built in oven and hob can be split allowing you to place the oven eye level or under-counter, and the hob either near the oven or elsewhere like on an island unit ,means they offer you, as a cook, more flexibility and for the kitchen to be designed around how you like to work. Ergonomics will also be allowed to play a greater role in the design meaning the cooking experience should be more practical and less stressful. This is also an important consideration if you are tall or suffer from back problems. Freestanding units all have a low level oven which means a lot of bending and lifting of heavy roasting pans. With a builtin oven you can install it at any level meaning it becomes more accessible and more ergonomical. Only the more expensive freestanding units offer you an option of two ovens. This can affect how you cook. If you are someone comfortable cooking on a large scale or doing multiple dishes Return to Contents Page

Freestanding cookers have definitely come into their own aesthetically over the past few years. They are now available in an amazing range of styles and colours and for a price you can have pretty much any look you want as long as you are happy to have an appliance that has a fairly dominant presence in the kitchen. These units are suited to people looking for either a very industrial look or a more vintage or retro look. Either way they will allow you to make your cooker a feature point in the kitchen and a real expression of your tastes. Built-in is more subtle. On the whole most built-in ranges are designed to match, have clean lines, be fairly minimalist and offer a sleek cooking solution that can melt into the kitchen rather than being a main feature. If you are planning for your kitchen to be a place of clean lines, simple aesthetics and calm, then built-in is definitely for you. It is also a great design asset that most built-in appliance ranges will have a microwave, coffee machine or steamer to match the oven so that there can be consistency in look and feel. When combined with integrated washing and refrigeration the built-in look is at its best. As you can see, there is more to consider when choosing your cooking appliances than first meets the eye. It is vitally important that you have done some research on this and have an idea as to which option and, if possible, brand and model you are leaning towards when you meet with your kitchen designer. Remember to ensure you designer is given, in writing, the name, model and installation specs of the appliances you have chosen so they can ensure the cabinetry is built correctly. All electrical and gas connections must be done by a qualified person or your insurance will not cover you in the event of a fire. KITCHEN PLUMBING ADVICE FROM THE EXPERTS A kitchen revamp is the ideal time to update your plumbing. Having your water points in the correct place and being able to accommodate the new gadgets that are now available, is vital to ensure your renovation truly adds to the value of your home. We asked CP&B (Cape Plumbing & Bathroom Supplies) what plumbing advice they would give consumers who are planning a kitchen revamp. You need to have good communication between your plumber and kitchen designer from the very beginning. Your water point plan not only needs to give thought to what you need and can afford now, but also to what you might like in the future â&#x20AC;Ś like when you can afford that new fringe with an ice maker, or a hydro tap. Make provision now rather than later for all possible needs and additions you may want over the next 5 years. Not only will it be less invasive when the time comes, but more importantly it will be more affordable as well. All your plumbing work should be complete by the time the kitchen company comes to site. Having a plumbing plan showing all water points and the routing of the pipes (both supply and waste) will make things a lot easier for the kitchen instillation teams, who need to drill into the walls to fix cupboard carcasses in place. If you are laying new pipes or upgrading old ones, then try and ensure your pipe runs vertically as this format encounters fewer issues with other trades. Do not take the shortest route from one point to another, as this is bound to get drilled into on a Sunday afternoon by your handy husband. 22

Try use copper pipe as much as possible, if budget allows, as it offers the best flowrate compared to the new multi-layered piping systems. This will be appreciated by the user when it does not take 2 days to fill the sink. Sometimes electricity and water points have to go hand in hand. Consider an electrical point at your kitchen sink, this allows for an instant hot water system to be fitted with ease. A water and plug point should also go hand in hand at your fridge area so you have the facility for a fridge that supplies water and ice.

Due thought should be given to your choice of sink mixer. Most people under estimate the cost of a decent quality mixer. You want to look at products that have a good guarantee and easy access to spares, should it need maintenance at any point. If selecting a retractable sink mixer (a mixer with a pull out spray), there needs to be an open void below to allow the hose to move up and down freely; while a practical wall mounted sink mixer, frees up a lot of space around your sink.

Your choice of sink is also very important to the practicality and aesthetics of your kitchen. On a stone or solid surface, an underslung sink is always popular as it creates a feeling of space in the kitchen. It is vital that these are correctly installed with the assistance of the stone or surface fabricator, as only certain adhesives are strong enough to secure the sink in place correctly. If the wrong adhesive is used (such as silicone or epoxy), there is every chance the sink will come loose causing water damage to your kitchen. If you select a traditional drop in sink, and you have wooden or post-form tops, it is advised to mount the mixer on the platform in the sink. Make sure the mixer is fitted with a wide “washer” to ensure stability. However, if the sink is dropped into a stone surface it would be better to mount the mixer through the stone as this makes for a far firmer mount. If you are adding a waste disposal system to your sink, make sure that you use as few bends as possible and the pipe is cleared of its burrs from when it was cut. The pipe needs as little obstruction as possible to effectively remove the waste. At the dishwasher and wash machine points it is always best to mount the stop taps above the counter for ease of isolation, in the event of a burst pipe, and for isolating when going away for long periods. Although this might not be the most attractive option it is the most practical and by working with your kitchen designer and plumber, you

Consider installing a floor drain under your wash machine and dishwasher as a fail-safe. This could save you from a massive insurance claim for when a water supply hose bursts, which is a common occurrence. Storage space is always paramount in a kitchen. Make use of space saving traps under the sink. These run to the back of the cupboard beneath the sink rather than directly under the sink. This not only frees up space, but also moves all the inevitable piping out of harm’s way, thus minimizing carcass damaging leaks.

Most importantly, ensure you use a qualified and registered plumber. You will need proof that all your plumbing work and installations have been done by a qualified person for your insurance. If you cut corners and try to do the work yourself, or let an unregistered person do them, you may find yourself with no insurance if there is a leak. Remember, water is a kitchen’s biggest enemy. Exposure to water or excessive moisture will destroy the structural integrity and the aesthetics of your kitchen, so don’t make the mistake of putting price first and your pluming second. We asked KSA registered kitchen companies to tell us what the 5 most common mistakes are that consumers make during a kitchen revamp:

1) CHOICE OF SUPPLIER Everyone is looking for a good deal. There is nothing better than thinking you have found that gem – the one man or company no one else knows of who can do the job brilliantly and save you money along the way. The KSA takes calls weekly from consumers who have opted to use a contractor, whether it is a kitchen company, builder, plumber or painter; without a proven track record and reliable references. These poor people are left with half done jobs, poor workmanship and out of pocket. It is vital you opt to work with contractors who are registered in terms of South African law, who are members of an industry body, who have fixed premises and reliable references.

2) UNDERESTIMATING THE TIME AND STRESS LEVELS OF THE JOB A kitchen revamp is a stressful operation. You need to allow for a minimum of 4 weeks from the kitchen company starting work on site. This does not include the time for the old kitchen to be removed and any structural changes. Things do not always go smoothly once on site. Once working on site there are many factors that can affect the kitchen company’s progress such as out of square walls and floors, supplier delays and delays from other contractors. These problems are common occurrences and you should prepare yourself to face at least one of them during your revamp. Doing a revamp is dirty work and you must be ready for your home to be unsettled, dirty and dusty during this time. Sort yourself out with a makeshift kitchen in another room to allow for food prep and washing up if you are staying home while the renovation is underway. The more structural work taking place during the revamp – like new walls, floors, plumbing and electrical – the messier the job is going to be.

3) FUNDS, BUDGETS AND QUOTES Be realistic when you are setting your budget. A good quality kitchen that will last is more expensive than you think. Don’t be scared to tell the kitchen designer how much they have to work with. Without an accurate idea of the budget the kitchen designer cannot tailor their design and material choices to work within that budget. When you are comparing your quotes be sure you are comparing apples with apples. If one quote is substantially less than another we can guarantee they are not quoting on the same thing. There will be a difference in quality, materials or expertise.

4) AESTHETICS OVER FUNCTION While you want your kitchen to look nice you can’t sink your entire budget into the aesthetics. It is vital that a good portion if the budget is invested in quality hardware and raw materials. It is also vitally important that you, as the client, take the time to research, know and understand the materials you eventually choose as there are always unique care and maintenance guidelines, pros and cons to every finish. The design too, must give as much focus to practicality as it does to form. Be guided by your designer as to the best ergonomic design for your kitchen and don’t throw their recommendations out of the window in preference of aesthetics. In the long term you will be grateful for a practically designed kitchen.

5) ONCE ON SITE Making changes once on site can cause havoc during a revamp. Any changes must be confirmed in writing and properly understood by both parties. Verbal instructions are a ‘no no’ and guarantee problems. Every change will incur an additional cost and will add time to your completion date. It is always best to ensure you understand the plan and materials fully before work commences and that all necessary flooring, plumbing and electrical is compete before the kitchen company begins work.

CLEVER STORAGE SOLUTIONS Optimising space in a kitchen is vital. It is one of the rooms in the home that has the most items that need to be stored out-of-sight and yet easily accessible when needed. Very few of us manage this. We scrabble in the dark recesses of corner cupboards and at the back of drawers in the vain hope of finding that missing utensil but often not without bumping our head and issuing a few expletives. If you look at Pinterest and the glossy magazines they are full of wonderfully clever ideas on how to find pretty solutions to your storage problems but most are not ideal. They involve open shelves and boxes and jars all of which look very pretty in a photo shoot but practically they become cluttered and gather dust. To solve your storage issues properly, you need to look for solutions invented by the kitchen industry for the kitchen. These items have been developed over time to ensure they work to enhance the practicality of your kitchen, making your life easier. Finding the right solutions starts with proper planning. I have a friend who recently redid her kitchen. It took her ten years to decide exactly what she wanted but she did her homework and it worked for her. Her kitchen works perfectly for her needs, her lifestyle, her appliances and accessories. She ensured this by looking at what she used on a daily basis and how she wanted to access it. This lead to custom made cupboards for the display of her crystal, the storage of her hot trays, the storage of her dog food; and pull out storage for her bread maker and mixer that allows her to operate the machines from their storage space when they are 30

pulled out for use. It is a very clever kitchen and all it took was a good brief from the client. This is where you must start. Once you can tell the kitchen designer what problems, storage-wise, they need to solve, they have a treasure chest of hardware and accessories they can draw on to come up with the right storage solution for you. What you want to avoid is dead space. No part of your kitchen should be under-utilized or inaccessible. Corner units are notorious for this. There are a variety of corner unit hardware solutions that can make this space of better use to you. These units swivel into the dead space and then pull out into the kitchen so you can easily access the items stored in the hard to reach part of the corner cupboard. You can also find drawer units

that are designed for that awkward corner so that you can opt for a more ergonomical drawer-based solution to the problem. The pantry is a much prized addition to a kitchen but honestly not many people can keep on top of what is where with all the packets and bottles and the cupboard can easily become a mess. There is a vast array of pantry towers that operate in various ways â&#x20AC;&#x201C; full pull out units or pull out shelves. These assist you to have full access to the bottles stored at the back of the pantry as well as those on the top shelves. It also means you can separate your pantry items into produce themes allowing you to have better control over what you do and do not have. Accessing and fully utilising under-counter cupboards has also, always been a bug bear. Now there are two options to ensuring you get easy access to the back of the unit and can actually store more. If you want to stick with under counter cupboards then fit them with internal pull out shelves. These increase both storage capacity and accessibility. The growing trend now is to opt for under counter drawer units. These can vary in depth and can even have a drawer within a drawer for separation of items. With the hardware and accessories that are now available you can safely store plates and dishes in drawers as well as the usual pots and pans. Storage of utensils, knives and forks can be a headache but with practical internal accessories for your drawers you can divide up the drawer space in a way that works for your utensils and cutlery. A messy cutlery drawer is one of the most frustrating messy zones in the kitchen, if you can clear the clutter with each utensil having a place, your cooking time will not be quite as stressful. If you love to cook, put thought into the addition

of a special storage cupboard for your baking trays. This doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t take much room but allows them to be stored vertically making them easy to access and put away. A good cook always wants easy access to their herbs and spices. There are a wide variety of spice drawer inserts and pull outs available. Look for the one that best works for you bearing in mind you want to be able to easily see which spice is which and avoid spillage. Small appliances can take up a lot of space and work surface area. Look at providing for a special countertop cupboard where the smalls can be hidden from view by a roller door. This keeps them accessible without heavy lifting but not cluttering up the kitchen. Make proper use of the cupboard under your sink. This space so often goes to waste. You can now get waste pipes that run to the back of the cupboard, thereby opening up some of this space for taller cleaning materials. Combine this with a pull out internal shelf/ drawer and you will get far better access to your cleaning materials and use of what is a traditionally dormant space. Making sure your new kitchen stores all you need it to, is easy. It just requires a little thought and input from you, the client. Good storage solutions will add to your overall cost but will more than pay for themselves in their practicality. THE CONSUMER PROTECTION ACT AND THE KITCHEN INDUSTRY Consumers in South Africa are offered protection by the CONSUMER PROTECTION ACT. The Act focuses on consumer protection by clearly setting out the rights of consumers and then also the responsibility of suppliers – both of goods and services. It gives the consumer the right to demand quality and safe goods as well as quality service and then it also gives consumers an implied warranty.

1) PART C – CONSUMERS RIGHT TO CHOOSE

It is important to note that goods ordered from a Kitchen Manufacturer will be considered as “special-order goods” which means goods that are custom designed and made specifically to satisfy the consumer requirements.

• If a consumer has bought goods solely on the basis of a description or sample, or both, the consumer can reject the goods if the goods delivered do not correspond with the description given by the supplier or the examined samples. It is important to note that a sample is a small piece of a product. Colour, grain and pattern can look different on a large scale than it does on a small scale sample – this perceived difference in scale does not necessarily mean the sample and the product do not match. It is also important to note that timber and stone are natural products, and there are naturally occurring variations in pattern, colour, texture and grain that are part of the product which cannot always be controlled by the manufacturer or fabricator. There is a responsibility on the consumer to understand and inspect the materials they ask the company to work with. Please bear in mind that once the goods have been installed your right to return them is void.

As a consumer you have certain rights and you are entitled to enforce these rights. In the context of the Kitchen Industry, only certain aspects of the Act apply. Unfortunately the law as it pertains to special order goods, like a kitchen, is not tried and tested in court as such there are grey areas in particular relating to returning of goods and refunding of monies.

• The consumer has a right to expect the supplier to deliver the goods or perform the services on the agreed date, if any, or otherwise within a reasonable time after concluding the agreement unless otherwise is expressly provided for in the agreement. If a fixed date for delivery is given and the deadline is not met the consumer may either accept the delivery or cancel the

The KSA, as an organisation, stands by what is fair and all our members are bound by the KSA Code of Ethics which promotes the business practices that are envisioned in the Consumer Protection Act.

agreement without penalty. You will be given an estimated manufacturing and installation timeline from the company as part of your contract. Please remember that if the delivery date is changed due to delays on your side, rather than by a delay on the supplier’s side, you will have to adjust your new delivery date to one that works for both yourself and the supplier as he cannot be expected to compromise other clients to accommodate your delay. If you delay the delivery from the dates stipulated in the contract then this right is void.

sign off the technical drawings of your kitchen and in doing this you accept that the design and specs are correct. Should you question the specs and they have been made according to drawings you have signed off the company is not liable. • Any person performing a service for a consumer at their premises must visibly display or wear some form of identification. For your own safety only allow people who are clearly identifiable as working for your contractor to enter your home.

2) PART D – RIGHT TO DISCLOSURE AND INFORMATION • Any notice or document given to a consumer must be in a plain and understandable language. It is a good idea to ask your contractor to take you through the contract, clause by clause, so you can clarify anything you don’t understand. They should also take you through the drawings, as once you have signed them off you are accepting that they are correct. • If the consumer has not had the opportunity to examine or inspect the actual goods received before purchase, on delivery of the goods they are entitled to inspect the goods. If on this initial inspection they find that the ‘specialorder’ goods do not reasonably conform to the specifications of the order then the consumer can return the goods to the supplier and receive a full refund. This can only be done within 10 business days after delivery to the consumer and this right is not available once the goods have been installed. In certain instances the supplier can charge the consumer a reasonable charge when these goods are returned. Remember that if you have been given opportunity to examine the goods, or a sample thereof, and you refuse, you may be compromising this right. Also, if you authorise someone to inspect the goods for you, they are deemed to be acting on your behalf and may too compromise this right. Once again remember once the goods are installed this right falls away. • The supplier must always provide a written sales record of each transaction to the consumer. Ensure you have a written contract and you sign off the drawings; any and all changes made after the initial contract is signed, are to be documented and signed. You will be asked to 36

3) PART F – RIGHT TO FAIR AND HONEST DEALING • Advertisements or any form of marketing to the consumer cannot be false, misleading or deceptive. Remember if an offer sounds too good to be true, it probably is. • It is important to note that if, after delivery to the consumer, the supplier and consumer agree to substitute any of the goods, an amended agreement or sales record must be given to the consumer. Get all changes noted in writing and signed by both parties. Remember any changes made once the company is on site will add time to the completion date and the company can no longer be held to the originally agreed completion date.

4) PART G – RIGHT TO FAIR, JUST AND REASONABLE TERMS & CONDITIONS - When consumers enter into any agreement with a supplier for the supply of any goods or services, the agreement must be fair, reasonable and just.

5) PART H – RIGHT TO FAIR VALUE, GOOD QUALITY AND SAFETY • When a supplier undertakes to perform any service for the consumer, the consumer has a right to expect the property to be in the same

condition as when the property was made available, taking into account the circumstances of the supply and any other conditions agreed between the parties. Ask your contractor if he has resulting damage insurance to cover him, should any damage occur during the job – having this insurance is not mandatory but it does help if anything gets damaged. If you feel the contractor’s team is not respecting your home and leaving it in an unkempt or damaged manner, notify him immediately. • The Act also provides for an implied warranty within six months from date of delivery. The warranty gives the consumer the right to receive goods that are reasonably suitable for the purpose that they are intended to be used for; are of good quality, free of defects and in good working order, and will be durable and usable for a reasonable period of time. All KSA kitchen members are held to a one year guarantee excluding wear and tear or abuse. • If goods are found not to comply with these requirements then up to 6 months after receiving the goods; the supplier must then either repair

or replace the goods or refund the consumer. The consumer has the choice as to whether they want the goods repaired, replaced or their money refunded. If goods are repaired and then within 3 months the goods present with the same problem the goods must then be replaced or the purchase price refunded. Should there be a problem with a KSA member’s workmanship within the guarantee period, the KSA will step in to offer mediation. We will however always seek to fix, repair or replace before we look to hold our member to a refund. It is also important to note that the Act provides for consumers to refer any disputes to an applicable industry body in order to enforce any right in terms of the Act or to resolve any dispute in respect of a transaction or agreement with a supplier. The KSA is the only registered body that exists to mediate issues within the kitchen industry. However, we are only mandated to operate, if the company in question is a KSA member. As such we would encourage consumers to protect themselves by looking to only appoint KSA registered companies when undertaking a kitchen project.

BEWARE! KITCHEN DESIGN ERRORS While the kitchen is undoubtedly the heart of a home, preserving its warmth while updating its look, feel and function can be one of the most challenging aspects of kitchen design. There are lots of reasons to update your kitchen, perhaps you want to upgrade and increase the value of the home, or maybe you just want to make your cooking time more efficient and enjoyable; but beyond the siren call of the glossy design magazines and those shiny new appliances you’ve been eyeing out, there are basic design errors that you should be aware of to ensure your new kitchen is both attractive and practical.

ROOM TO WORK One of the most common mistakes is not allowing for sufficient countertop space. Though you may want your countertops to be decorative, they need to be functional too. When updating your kitchen, ensure you have sufficient countertop workspace by evaluating how you use the space you currently have and planning for your future needs. The amount of space you require will be specific to your circumstances and will vary with the size limitations of your room as well as your budget. Understanding how traffic will flow through the kitchen is a useful tool in organizing countertop space so that it will be efficient and comfortable. Make a list of the type of activities you need specific ‘zones’ for and evaluate how they may overlap when more than one person uses the kitchen. Materials matter too. Natural stone, quartz, solid surfacing, concrete and natural wood counters all require regular maintenance and special handling. Make sure you educate yourself about the material you want to use before making a final decision as you may accidentally choose a high maintenance finish that keeps you on your toes.

ISLAND DESIGN An island can add some much needed additional counter space; however, if it’s too big it can ruin your kitchen. If you choose the wrong island or place it in the wrong spot it can be a disaster. Islands that obstruct the flow of traffic to and from the sink, refrigerator, stove and primary workstations will create bottlenecks and impede the functionality of your kitchen. One solution is to add a sink or stove to the island so it forms part of the functional 40

kitchen triangle. Another is to position the island so that it has lots of space around it and doesn’t impede foot traffic. Rule of thumb is to allow a minimum walkway of 900mm between counters and/or cupboard units.

TOO TRENDY Remember, trends and tastes change. Pomegranate may be the most stylish colour around this season, but chances are in five years, those luscious red hues may look garish and dated. Most trendy designs have a short half-life, and when they’re out, they’re really out. Even if you’re sure that red is your favourite colour when you come to sell prospective buyers may not share your passion. Going too trendy with the design, colour and material choices could jeopardise your sale. Rather opt for colours and materials that have longevity, appealing to multiple tastes. These finishes can be easily dressed with wall colour, appliances and pictures that add your personal tastes and these can be updated as your tastes change.

STICK TO THE PLAN Progressing from the planning stages to the actual work may involve some inconvenience and expense. To ensure your success, decide on a plan and stick with it. Changing your mind once the work has begun can be expensive and usually results in more than a few unexpected and frustrating glitches. It is a good idea to get more than one company to quote on your kitchen but allow each company to do their own measurements and come up with their own design. If you take one design to all the companies for them to quote from you will never know if there is a better kitchen design than the one you have. Each designer will have a unique interpretation of your brief. You should give the designer a full understanding of the budget they have to work with then set them free to interpret your brief. This way you will have several design options to choose from assisting you to find the best design for your space and requirements.

HANDOVER CHECKLIST Your new kitchen is installed and your contractor is asking you to sign off the job. Here is a useful checklist that you should work through before you sign off the job as complete.

• Have all accessories been fitted and are they operating correctly (Cutlery trays, bins, pull-out larders, pocket doors etc)?

• Are all doors plumb and all gaps even? (It is perfectly acceptable to have a 2mm – 4mm gap between doors)

• Are all worktops secured and cut outs sealed (if required)?

• Do all hinges open and close smoothly and relatively silently? • Do all drawers open and close smoothly and are all gaps even? (It is perfectly acceptable to have a 3mm – 6mm gap between drawer fascias). • Check that all other moving parts operate smoothly and silently, and do what they are supposed to do. • Check that all gaps and fillers form symmetrical lines. (Exclusions made when walls and floor are not plumb). • Are all handles fitted securely and are they straight / level? • Are all adjustable shelves placed correctly – aligned and level? • Are there any visible gaps that have not been filled? • Have all screws been capped in all carcasses? (It is acceptable to have Hilti screws visible). • Are all cut-outs for services neat and in the correct positions? • Are kick-plates fitted and exposed ends edged? 44

• Are all mitre joins neat and filled correctly?

• Is the sink secured and sealed? • Have all manufacturing marks, glue, overspray and visible dust been cleaned away? • Have all paint or stain touch-ups been attended to? Please remember that ALL appliances are to be installed by a qualified electrician / gas installer and all sinks, basins and taps need to be connected by a qualified plumber. Enjoy your new kitchen
