RVHS Newsletter Weekending 27th January 2023

Page 1

Dear Parents and Carers

It has been a very busy week in school but today, the entire school community paused to reflect on the word of the week, solidarity, and to engage in a whole school assembly on ‘ordinary people’ which is the theme of Holocaust Memorial Day 2023. It continues to be important that our students understand and appreciate the British Values of democracy, respect & tolerance, rule of law and individual liberty. These values underpin what it means to be a citizen in a modern and diverse Great Britain but also, apply to the way we value the Roding Valley community and do not condone discrimination of any kind. Our assembly reflected on the roles of ‘ordinary people’ around the horrific treatment of Jewish people by the Nazi’s and their collaborators. Not only that ‘ordinary people’ were those who were persecuted but also that it was ‘ordinary people’ who perpetrated, witnessed, and fought the oppression and atrocities of the Holocaust. Our minute of collective reflection at the end was based around the quote “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.”

It is also very unfortunate but I have to inform you that another student has been robbed on their way home from school in the local community. The police have been informed and are working with the family. Please do refer to the Safety Letter Miss Dyer (Deputy Headteacher) sent out earlier this month for advice and guidance to give your sons and daughters.

So far this week, I have sent two different communications regarding the planned Industrial action. You will find the letter from the local authority here and the subsequent communication I sent here. I would like to remind parents and carers the strike is happening because of a national dispute between the unions and the government over the lack of school funding, teachers’ pay, the current recruitment and retention crisis and the impact this is having now, and the devastating impact that this will have in the future. The national recruitment crisis is part of the bigger issue that there are less graduates entering the profession and being trained nationally, especially in key subjects such as Maths, Science and Geography.

On a more positive note, last week our period 1 sessions were devoted to our house system and vertical tutoring. The focus was on students developing their sense of future and aspiration, one of our core values at Roding Valley. Our Year 13 House Captains and Year 12 Deputy House Captains also led assemblies for their houses on the theme of the week ‘futures’. It proved to be a successful week for students to take time to reflect on their goals, build resilience and continue to strive towards success.

Thank you to Miss Edwards for organising another residential trip to Manchester for 18 Year 9 students to experience a Premier League football match last weekend. They got to watch Haaland score a hat trick of goals from their pitch side seats which was an amazing opportunity for them. They visited the National Football Museum, toured old Trafford and enjoyed a game of bowling. Thanks also to Mr Tisdale for accompanying them on the trip We also saw a number of Year 8 students out on a STEM trip to the Science Museum this week. They definitely enjoyed the interactive activities. Please have a look at the pictures later in this bulletin.

I am incredibly proud and very excited about the school production of “Sister Act Junior.” Staff and students have been working incredibly hard. As show week quickly approaches, the final preparations have begun! The show is running for three nights; Wednesday 8th to Friday 10th February, in the main school hall starting at 7pm. Tickets are still available, and can be purchased through ParentPay for £6 each.

There are always so many activities for our students to get involved in. Please keep an eye on our Extra-Curricular page on the website here. This is regularly updated. The latest extra-curricular timetable is in this bulletin.

Year7 and Year 8 have been sitting progress exams this week. They have conducted themselves extremely well, demonstrating endeavour and aspiration to do well. These exams will support teachers in determining whether students are making the expected progress. This information will be shared with parents in the next reporting cycle.

It’s also an exciting time for our Year 9 cohort. You will have seen a letter from Ms Larkin a couple of weeks ago outlining the timeline for the options process. At the end of next week, you will receive an email notifying you of what options pathway your child is on, an invite to our options evening (07/02/22 from 5.30pm) with a link to our options microsite containing all helpful information. Watch this space!

Our Sixth Form Art students have amazed us as they always do with their creativity and talent in the Art A Level PPEs. Do take a moment to look at some of the pictures Mr Tisdale (Head of Creative Arts) has shared later in this bulletin. I am always impressed by their ability.

Essex County Council have approached us to share this link with our parents and carers Parent/Carer Vaping Survey They have said:

“We know very little about vaping among children and young people (CYP) in Essex. The Public Health Team have identified a gap in understanding the scale, culture and drivers of vaping among young people. We want to find out what might help in addressing this and as a result are running two short online surveys.” We have shared the Young People’s survey with students via their Personal development Google Classroom. “We want to understand how to develop the right messages and interventions. This will help stop current usage and prevent the uptake of vaping amongst young people in Essex.

Understanding if residents have concerns or information needs will help shape future public health work. This may include, for example, preventative work, health policies and communications campaigns. The surveys will be live until the end of February half term.”

As always, thank you for your support & enjoy the rest of the bulletin.

Year 7 News

Message from Miss Reed

It has been a busy week for our Year 7 cohort who have had their first set of assessments. This is a great chance for students to display all of their hard work and for teachers to check on the progress of your son/daughter. The students conducted themselves brilliantly in the exam hall and I am very proud of them all.

In a few weeks’ time, parents/carers will receive an updated school report which will have an attitude to learning grade and an indication of your son/daughters progress in each subject area.

Can I remind everyone of the expectations regarding uniform and equipment. Students should be in full school uniform every day apart from the days they have PE, on those days, students should wear full RVHS PE kit with their blazer. If students require to wear trainers for any reason, please ensure they have a note. Students should ensure that every day they are carrying the correct equipment for their lessons which includes a reading book.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact your son/daughter's academic mentor or myself. Miss

Message from Mr Ryan

It's hard to believe that we are half way through this half term! In two weeks’ time we will be on the half term break and a few of the year group will be going to Disneyland Paris. I hope they enjoy themselves and stay safe whilst they are away.

This week has seen the year group sit their exams in certain subjects in the Exam Hall. It has been great to see how well they have studied and prepared for the exams. I know that this can be quite stressful for the young people who have to sit the exams but it is good practice to prepare them for their GCSEs. In case you hadn't seen already the year 8 microsite can be seen on the school website here. This has great revision techniques and top tips to help your child through their ongoing studies.

I would like to thank Ms Harris for taking the year group to the Science museum this week - It would appear that the group had a great time! You will see some photos and a short write up about this further on in the bulletin. Have a great weekend and as always if you have concerns please contact your childs Academic Mentor or myself (fryan@rodingvalley.net)

In England, a Free School Meal (FSM) is a statutory benefit available to school aged children from families who receive other qualifying benefits and who have been through the relevant registration process. Recently, the process of applying for Free School Meals at Roding Valley High School has changed to an online application in order to improve speed and reduce the burden of paperwork for parents. For more information on the qualifying benefits and for more information, please visit our Free School Meals page on our school website

It is important that parents register their children for free school meals if they are entitled as the school receives additional funding known as the Pupil Premium to support the children’s learning. The use of the pupil premium is personalised to meet the needs of the children who are entitled to support, such as 1-1 tuition, additional LSA support and intervention groups, access to school visits, Learning Mentor, speech and language assistants, Family Support and counselling.

If you believe that your child is eligible for Free School Meals, please click here to use our Free School Meals Checker. Your Certificate of Eligibility will then need to be emailed to finance@rodingvalley.net

Year 11 News

Message from Mr Fletcher

A big well done to all Year 11 who are really working hard as we approach the GCSE exam season. The reality is there are only 48 school days before the exams begin so it is really crucial students remain focussed over the next few weeks.

Interventions

Morning interventions in Maths, English and Science are still ongoing and these sessions take place between 8.30-9.00am Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays so it is imperative students are in school on time.

In addition, there are after school interventions taking place and students will have been invited to those sessions. Again, all this extra tutoring is so important over the coming weeks.

Year 11 Prom

The Year 11 Prom will take place at Woolston Manor on Tuesday 27th June at 7.00pm. A letter will be distributed shortly outlining the details and payment will be via parent pay.

Please be aware that attendance at our prom is still subject to student's behaviour, punctuality and attendance at school. Of course we want everyone to be able to attend, however, the evening is a privilege so should behaviour be poor, attendance at the prom will be jeopardised.

RVHS GCSE Microsite Revision Site

The school has a dedicated GCSE revision microsite that has an enormous amount of revision material that students can access to support their revision. Students have been informed of this on numerous occasions but parents may also like to be aware.

Have a great weekend – Mr Fletcher

6th Form News

Oxbridge Applications

The sixth form team would like to extend their congratulations to Daniel Mehr, who has received an offer to study Medicine from the University of Cambridge. This is an exceptional opportunity for Daniel who has worked incredibly hard to secure this offer. We wish him every success in his future career.

Career Talks

We have met with some fantastic employers over the past few weeks. Every Monday our sixth formers can join employer talks in the study centre. Students have met recently with KPMG, OMD Media, Schroders and Hill Group. Attending these employer talks gives students the opportunity to find out about apprenticeship and graduate pathways offered by these companies. The talks are really inspirational and many students have been supported and employed by these companies. Coming up we have VCCP advertising, Capgemini, Department for Transport, Deloitte and BGC. We try to offer a variety of different industries to really help them find out about the many career opportunities available to them.

If you work for a company and would like to participate in any of these talks please get in touch with Mrs Mason our Careers Advisor. dmason@rodingvalley.net

6th Form Bulletin

For more news and information please see out latest 6th Form Bulletins here and here

Last week our students took part in their 3rd house week, where students were in vertical forms focusing on the theme of the week 'futures'. We see students creating dashboards to provide a constant reminder of their individual and collective aspirations. Our House Captains and Deputy House Captains delivered assemblies based around the theme of the week. It was great to see students reflecting on their journey and discovering a sense of future for themselves. We also celebrated the most recent house points tally and took the opportunity to remind students of the importance of taking part in as many house events as they can to ensure they are getting the most out of their school experience.

We had a very successful cake decorating competition last night. The winners were:

1st place - Valentina Santos Altafin 7Ne from Murray house

2nd place - Kitty Tabram 7Ca from Hawking house

3rd place - Kimi Oliveira Da Costa from Murray house Well done to all who entered!

STEM Trip to The Science Museum

Our Year Y8’s had an explosive time at the Science Museum. The rocket show was a really exciting introduction to Newtons laws of motion and they had lots of fun getting hands on in the Wonderlab.

Year 9 – Manchester City FC Trip

Last weekend, we took 18 Year 9 students to Manchester to watch Manchester City play Wolves; and what a game it was. A hattrick was scored by Haaland to seal the 3-0 victory. We had pitch side seats which proved to be an amazing view of all the action. Alongside the game, we visited the National Football Museum, toured Old Trafford Stadium and visited the Manchester United Museum. We also did a spot of shopping at the ginormous Trafford Centre and enjoyed a game of bowling and Pizza Hut buffet. A very busy weekend full of fun footballing activities. The students thoroughly enjoyed all the different aspects of the trip and represented RVHS so wonderfully well.

The Imperial War Museum Trip

This week some of our Year 9 students took a trip to the Imperial War Museum.

The Students had an opportunity to gain an insight into the holocaust and much more

Year 11 Road Safety

On Monday 16th January, Year 11 were given a very powerful message about the dangers of drink or drug driving. It not only focused on being a passenger in these circumstances but being a new driver too. The drama, 'Dead End' was followed by a debrief session where students were encouraged to discuss the scenario. The drama was engaging, and despite its serious message there were moments of light-heartedness

Our students were a fantastic and attentive audience, participating where required.

It can be hoped that they remember this powerful message as they embark on their own personal journeys.

6th Form Art Exam

Well done to our year 12 and 13 art students who have just completed their 10-hour exam at the end of their final unit of coursework. Bear in mind that some of these pieces of work are at a very large scale!

Art is one of the only subjects that retains a 60% coursework element, so these timed practical tests are extremely valuable and important. Because of the exam board changes over the last 3 years, this was actually the first time some of these students had undertaken an extended piece of exam work…. a skill they need to embrace because their final exam is 15 hours spread over 3 full days in May!

AQA exam papers for the final exam are released on Thursday 2nd February. Then the fun begins!

Well done to Mr Baidoo who is our lead teacher on the A’ Level course.

6th Form Art Exam

NEW YEARS 2022-23

‘3…2…1.’ Everyone paused, ‘HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!’ The entire pub cheered. People kissed, people hugged each other and people made stupid jokes like ‘I haven't showered since last year,’ and people congratulated friends until… This woman suddenly came up on the London eye fireworks. The robotic sound said ‘This is an urgent message that everyone should abide by. Each month every person in the UK will get the same challenge. January’s challenge is…’

It paused. ‘It-i-i-i-i-i-i-i-i’ It glitches so much that the TV broke. ‘HEY, IT'S ON MY PHONE!!!!’

Someone shouted and everyone gathered around.’ I'm sorry about that malfunction. Anyways January’s challenge is, you will need to paint your toenails a colour every week. DO NOT LIE!!!’ The screen went blank and everyone started shouting and scattering.

People on the road were painting their toenails and stores were cleared only toilet paper was there. People who brought loads of nail varnish were selling them for £100 per toe.

This is the start of a story for a little girl in a little village called Abridge. Her name was Ella and she has an older brother named Theo who always tried to wind her up but she has a distinctive cry that her mum always runs towards like a tsunami is chasing her. Theo gets in lots of trouble and that's why she does it. Her dad, Alex absolutely hates it but she's his only girl. This story starts on January 2nd 2023.

‘MUM SHE'S STEALING ALL MY NAIL VARNISH!’ Theo screamed. ‘Oh how the tables have turned.’ Ella slickly said coming around the corner.

‘Don't be like that.’

‘Like what she said, I'm just a sweet little girl.’ she said and winked.

‘Ughhh, fine OR…’ he turned around, put up his hood and bent over.

‘I can't do anything,’ he said in his normal voice. ‘But granny sniffler can!’ he shouted in a croaky voice. And chased her away.

‘NO, PLEASE NOT GRANNY AHHH MUMMY.’ she shouted and Theo stopped.

‘Don't do it.’ ‘Please Ella.’ Theo whispered ‘MUUUUUUUUUUMMMMMMMMMMMYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!’

THUMP THUMP!!

‘THEO!!’ The scary voice shouted.

Their mum came up the stairs and told Theo to stop or he will have to give Ella all his nail varnish forever.

The next day the stores restocked and were gone. 5 injured, 5 lost children. Luckily Theo and Ella were told to go get bread and milk for breakfast. They got 4 bottles of pink and blue nail varnish. They got home, painted their toes and waited at the door.

KNOCK KNOCK

They fixed their posture and opened the door.

‘Put your hands up.’ They did what he said. He spoke into his walkie-talkie, ‘25 Shallow Road is clear. Move out.’ They trotted out into the road towards the next house.

‘Phew, that was close.’ Ella sighed. The next day was the same. And then the next until the 31st January. Theo was watching youtube until an ad came on.

‘This is an important ad.’ The same voice from new years day said. ‘A new challenge is upon us.’ Theo was worried, if the first month was about nails today might be makeup. While his sister was at a recital he tried some on and was really good. If he shows his sister he’ll be a laughingstock of the house.

‘February's challenge is….’

‘Please please please do not wear makeup.’

‘You must win 1 game of Fortnite every day.’ Theo was really bad at gaming and he knew he would suck.

‘Oh, you’ve gotta be kidding me-’

The End.

It was great to finally hand out 2 major awards from our Sports Awards Evening to the deserved winners. The Moncur Award went to Arthur Hammerston 9Li and the Outstanding Achievement Award in PE Award to Ruby Mace 10Ar – thanks to our Chair of Governors, Mr Wershof for presenting them with their awards.

There is no entitlement in law for pupils to take time off during the term to go on holiday. Only the Headteacher (not the local authority) may authorise such a request if they feel there are ‘Exceptional Circumstances’ - all applications for a leave of absence must be made in writing on the prescribed form provided by the school. Where a parent removes a child when the application for leave was refused or where no application was made to the school, the issue of a penalty notice will be requested by this school in accordance with the Essex Code of Conduct. A Penalty Notice may be issued where there have been at least 10 consecutive sessions (6 in September) of unauthorised absence for the purpose of a holiday.

If you would like further information regarding attendance please see our Attendance Policy here

If you have any attendance concerns or queries please contact your child’s Year Progress

Explore together: Ask your child to show you their favourite websites and apps and what they do on them. Listen, show interest and encourage them to teach you the basics of the site or app. 1

2 3 4 5 6 7 8

Chat about online safety little and often: Young people are likely to want to explore new pps and websites this month, whether that is for learning or for fun. Take this opportunity to talk to them about how to stay safe on these new services, and in general. Ask if anything ever worries them while they are online. Make sure they know that if they ever feel worried, they can get help by talking to you or another adult they trust.

Help your child identify trusted adults who can help them if they are worried: This includes you and other adults at home, as well as adults from wider family, school or other support services who they are able to contact at this time. Encourage them to draw a picture or write a list of their trusted adults.

Be non-judgemental: Explain that you would never blame them for anything that might happen online, and you will always give them calm, loving support.

Talk about how their online actions can affect others: If your child is engaging with others online, remind them to consider how someone else might feel before they post or share something. If they are considering sharing a photo/video of somebody else, they should always ask permission first.

Parental controls: Make use of the parental controls available on your home broadband and any internet enabled device in your home. You can find out more about how to use parental controls by visiting your broadband provider’s website.

Direct your child to age appropriate information about relationships and sex: It’s natural for young people to start exploring their sexual feelings online and adolescents are more inclined to take risks. It’s important to understand this and to talk to your child in a positive way. Thinkuknow, Brook, The Mix and Childline all provide age appropriate information about relationships and sex that you can signpost your child to.

Make sure they know about CEOP: Young people can report a concern about grooming or sexual abuse to CEOP at www.ceop.police.uk/safety-centre/ and get support from a specialist Child Protection Advisor.

Support your child with Thinkuknow websites

The age appropriate Thinkuknow websites are a great way to start and continue chats about online safety.

 11-13yrs Thinkuknow website: https://www.thinkuknow.co.uk/11_13/

 14yrs + Thinkuknow website – https://www.thinkuknow.co.uk/14_plus/

Our websites provide open and honest guidance for young people on friends, relationships and the internet, covering topics like dealing with pressure; consent; and getting support when you are worried.

You will find lots more advice on keeping your child safe online at www.thinkuknow.co.uk/parents.

If you are worried that a child or young person is at risk of harm online, you should call the police. Young people can make a report to CEOP at https://www.ceop.police.uk/safety-centre/

What is DODDLE?

Doddle provides students with access to thousands of engaging, formative resources and guides students through the curriculum.

Doddle Progress automatically tracks student attainment in key curriculum skills. Parents can see student attainment and progress through our easy-to-use Doddle Parent feature. Skills within Doddle are rated as red, amber or green. These ratings give a clear indication of how much progress a child has made and highlight the weaker areas to be targeted with revision.

Each student has a personal Doddle account where they can access their homework to-do lists and families can view the work their child has been assigned.

These accounts enable parents to view their child's results and encourage them to better their scores by using Doddle's revision resources.

Find out how to create a Doddle Parent account and then link that account to your child with this short video:
