Music Arts Inspires All Ages! A big round of thanks to the Johnson City Senior Center Foundation and Tennessee Arts Commission for their support of the very successful Music Arts Camp held at Memorial Park Community Center on May 31. An enthusiastic multigenerational group of 40 participants attended the free camp at which instructors offered lessons in six different art, music and movement classes. Each participant selected two of the specialized classes and took part in several group activities. Classes included rock painting, introduction to musical note reading, an overview of stringed instruments with a concentration on the ukulele, basic piano keyboard, paper quilts, hand bells, boomwhackers – (plastic tubes that create musical notes) and movement to music utilizing a parachute. The camp was held from 9 a.m.-2 p.m., and third-graders through senior adults all were given an opportunity to perform and show the group what they had learned. Many happily accepted the offer. Instructors included the Senior Chorale, Cherry Smith, Gail Morris, Terry Countermine and Gretchen Culp.

NRPA Congress James Ellis, Deb Fogle, Lauren Fowler, Jim Hughes and Sam Miller will be attending the NRPA Congress in Indianapolis, Ind., in September.
Carver Splash Pad - applied for TDEC grant.
Carver playground - awaiting insurance approval. The goal is to begin work within a week of approval.
Willow Springs Park - Eagle Scout pavilion project was dedicated on June 13.
Lions Park - a request to name the pavilion in honor of Ralph D. Jones was presented at the May Park Advisory Board meeting. Two public forums have been scheduled for July 2 and 17 at the pavilion to hear public input.
Purchase order has been approved for the GPS system for all maintenance fleet.
Athletics Division Highlights ~
The summer tennis program began this month with 63 enrolled.
Adult spring softball continued this month.
Youth T-ball and softball concluded this month.
Park Services Division Highlights ~
A Walk in the Park
Rotary Park Gump Pavilion - work continues on the restroom addition with completion date expected June 22, weather permitting.
Civitan Park - top dressing continues at a rate of 100 tons of sand per week. Sod will be applied to goal mouth areas on all fields.
Winged Deer Park softball fields sodding goal mouth areas on all 5 fields.

Recreation Services Division ~
Memorial Park Community Center’s inaugural Tot Triathlon was a big hit. Thirty youngsters ran the bases at TVA Credit Union Ballpark, jumped on their bikes and trikes riding their way to a safe and wet finish.
Carver campers enjoyed an afternoon at Rotary Park’s splash pad early in the month.

Habitat Detectives learned about animal adaptations and enjoyed a dip in Catbird Creek to do some critter collecting.
Sports campers learned basketball, soccer and golf this month.
The Van Go art is providing arts and crafts to nature, Carver and Jump Start campers this month. Campers enjoyed making popsicle puzzles and painted fossils on rocks.
MPCC’s Jump Start Camp had 80 0campers enrolled. Mini Jump Start had 15 campers.

Kudos to Park Services for the construction of the restroom adjacent to the Gump Pavilion at Rotary Park. The restroom is a much needed addition to the park. Congratulations crew on a job well done.
