April 2018

Meet our new team member, Sarah Saunders! Her primary roles will be to lead Walkers & Talkers, Hiking 101, and also Hip Hikers. You will also see her smiling face at the Friday night dances. She will also be involved in some of the sporting activities around the center. She brings with her a wealth of experience and knowledge to share with you while you explore our great area. We are happy to have her with us. Here’s ....Sayruh! So nice to meet everyone! I am a Georgia girl from the tiny mill town of Juliette (home to and Whistle Stop Café’s infamous “secret sauce” and the fried green tomato). Because my father managed a state historic site and was required to live on site, I had the unique blessing of growing up in the Park Ranger’s world on an 1800’s working plantation. So there was obviously no other calling for me and I eventually landed my own gig as Assistant Manager at state park & historic site on the GA coast below Savannah. After a few years on the barrier islands, the mountains began to call. Montana was the next destination and I was fortunate enough to work for Parks & Rec in Whitefish, MT as an Aquatic Invasive Species Boat Inspector and Beach Ranger. Family has brought me back to the east side of the country and I have to admit… there’s nothing like being back in the South! Yay for four seasons again! I can’t wait to get out and hike this beautiful terrain with you all. I am a huge water bug, so I am super stoked to get the paddles out on the endless amount of water around here… maybe throw a line out here and there. I predict a pretty awesome season ahead and I can’t wait to meet all of you!

Please call 434-5723, 48 hours in advance to reserve a meal or if you need to cancel a meal that you have already signed up for. Sign up sheets are also available outside of the dining room.

Washington County and Johnson City Animal Shelter Operations Director Tammy Davis welcomes 45 handcrafted pet beds from Johnson City Senior Services employees Chyrl McLaughlin and John Harrell.

Johnson City Senior Services recently delivered a total of 65 handcrafted pet beds to the Washington County and Johnson City Animal Shelter and Humane Society of Washington County. “We had donations of fabric and polyfill, and we just thought we would give back to the community,” said Chyrl McLaughlin, a Senior Services program coordinator. “People called us and asked if we could take these donations. The beds for cats and dogs began as just material and fill. We had about 10 volunteers, and the ones who couldn’t sew stuffed. I think the community really came together and showed they cared.” Tammy Davis, the animal shelter’s director of operations, said she was contacted and told community members had become aware of the need for new and used bedding. The shelter received 45 brightly colored beds. “They will be placed in the dog kennels with dogs that will be adopted,” Davis said. “We appreciate them very much. If we have a need for anything, the community always steps up and helps.” McLaughlin and Senior Services recreation worker John Harrell also delivered 20 beds to Melissa Williams with the Humane Society. “We get animals quite often on the spur of a moment, and we need things like this to help send to our fosters (adopters),” Williams said. “We get calls from people who have animals they can’t take care of. Our volunteers also spend a lot of time on the Internet, and if possible, we’ll find fosters for pets being given away.”

Dominion Senior Living of Johnson City A monthly activit y that residents at Dominion always look forward to taking part in is our scenic drives. Scenic drives are an excellent opportunit y to pause and appreciate God’s creation and many blessings. It also allows residents to revisit places and memories that they can share with each other. Some places we have really enjoyed visiting are Watauga Lake, The Covered Bridge, Doe River Gorge and the country side of both Washington and Carter Count y. We could not be more grateful for this time of the year when the flowers are in bloom, to explore beautiful East Tennessee! “And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.”-Genesis 1:31
