JCSC Foundation News

The Johnson City Senior Center Foundation Board members thank you for your generous support! For fiscal year 2016-2017, the Foundation Board has committed to continuing the partnership to provide the services of the Community Health Activities Coordinator; to provide charter buses for four day trips for seniors to interesting attractions outside the Center’s transportation service area; and to continue support for the fellowship program to assist low-income seniors with program and activity fees at the Center. None of this would be possible without continuing financial support from the many participants of the Johnson City Senior Center and our community. The Johnson City Senior Center Foundation, Inc. is also looking for a few individuals who would like to serve on the Board. The Board is currently involved in two large projects: Christmas Box 2016 with a goal of providing assistance to 200 needy seniors in our community; and Deerslayer 2017, a major fundraising and community event expected to attract 500 or more participants. The Foundation is a 501 (c) 3 tax exempt charitable organization made up of community volunteers who work together to enrich the lives of senior adults in our community.

If you have a heart for seniors, a desire to serve, and the energy and enthusiasm to engage community leaders in fundraising efforts, the Board needs you! To apply online, click on the Boards and Committees link at www.johnsoncitytn.org.

Help Us Help You! It is our desire at the Johnson City Senior Center that we offer as many classes as possible to promote the well being, educational growth and enrichment of our participants. As you look through the Senior Lifestyles newsletter each month, you will no doubt find events that are of interest to you. This may be fitness classes, health related talks, art classes or even outings. Please pre-register for these events so that we can be prepared to accommodate all who wish to participate. When classes do not have participants registered for them, we are inclined to cancel the class and often have people show up to participate only to learn that the class has been cancelled. By registering in advance, you are letting us know that there is an interest in the event. If you have topics of interest, please share them with the staff.

Please call 434-5723, 48 hours in advance to reserve a meal or if you need to cancel a meal that you have already signed up for. Sign up sheets are also available outside of the dining room.

Make your next trip as pain-free as possible! The stress and tension that often come with a trip can add to physical discomfort and worsen joint symptoms. But with a little research and proper planning you can reduce pain and anxiety and have a pleasant journey. 1. Ask an Expert - Before you hit the road, talk with an occupational therapist or a driver rehabilitation specialist who can give you tips for preparing your car or choosing a rental car. There are rental car companies with special programs. For example, Avis Rent-A-Car’s Access program offers cars with swivel seats, spinner knobs and other hand controls. Check out the Society for Accessible Travel and Hospitality for additional information and resources. 2. Book Smart - Try to avoid long lines and airport congestion by traveling mid week, which tends to be less busy. Book a seat with extra legroom or an aisle seat so it’s easier to stretch your legs. Reserve an ADA accessible hotel room near the elevator or on the first floor. Don’t forget to ask about exercise facilities, hot tubs or saunas, and a fridge in your room for medications. 3. Carry an Assistant - While a travel buddy is an obvious choice for shared driving and help with baggage and finding healthy food, assistive devices can be a great help, too. Examples include a folding cane or walker, travel chair, beaded seat cover, folding reacher or something as simple as an extra pillow for back support. 4. Be Med Ready - Keep all medications with you and not in checked bags, say experts. Pack medicines that require refrigeration, like some biologics, in a small cooler or in a Ziploc bag with an icepack. Buy a high-tech pillbox if

you need medication reminders. Check ahead to find the closest pharmacy to where you’re staying. You may even want to ask your doctor for an extra written prescription to take with you as a backup. Control the Temperature - Hot and cold therapies are great for pain and stiffness. Stock up on heat wraps and pads, portable ice packs and topical cream. Choose hotels with heated pools, hot tubs and saunas. Get VIP Treatment - Airlines are required to offer pre-boarding, wheelchair or motorized escorts through the airport to disabled passengers who ask. Call TSA Cares for security screening assistance that may prevent you from standing for extended periods. The TSA Cares toll-free help line (855/787-2227) provides information about screening policies and what to expect at security checkpoints. Once onboard, get help stowing your overhead bag from flight staff or a fellow passenger. Choose Meals Carefully - Most airport and rest stop food choices are highfat, high-calorie processed foods that promote inflammation. Carry healthy snacks, drink plenty of water and go easy on alcohol and caffeine that can aggravate inflammation. Need a break from just water? Try natural cherry juice that can help reduce inflammation – but avoid options with added sugar. Keep Moving - Sitting still for long periods can cause stiffness. Plan road trips with time for rest stops. Move around on a plane or train when it’s safe. Too unsafe or too achy to stand up? Try simple stretches while seated, or other exercises like isometrics, which involve flexing and holding muscles for five to six seconds.

This is not a fashion contest! Your gear will depend on the time of year, water temperature, and weather for your trip. Ask your outfitter for gear recommendations before your trip. As a rule of thumb, dress for the water temperature rather than the air temperature since you will be getting wet. Wetsuits can be rented with many outfitters, and are best when you know you’ll be constantly wet-some rivers have prolonged spaces between rapids, which can make a wetsuit unbearable in hotter temperatures. Wear an old pair of tennis shoes, running shoes, or even Converse high-tops are the best on the river. Sandals don’t offer as much protection and tend to come off easily in a swim. Sunglasses, especially prescription glasses, should have a croakie or other retainer that cinches tight. Consider a hat cord to tie your hat to your life jacket as well. In warmer weather, and late season warmer water, shorts and a T-shirt are good. Use sunscreen, but don’t put it on your forehead, or the back of your legs. It may run into your eyes, or cause you to be slipping all over the boat. Tip from Rafting America

Recipe for August Tomato Pie This recipe calls for fresh tomatoes, sweet onion, cheese and hot Italian sausage for a savory pie that`s anything but an ordinary dinner recipe. It would make a great take along for a church pot luck meal. Tomatoes are filled with antioxidants vitamin A and C and lycopene. Onions provide natural ingredients to fight heart disease and cancer. The cheese is a good way to get protein and calcium in your diet. If you want to make a lighter version of this recipe use turkey sausage, low fat cheese and low fat mayonnaise. Ingredients: 1(9 inch) Deep-dish pie shell 4 large tomatoes sliced 1 large sweet onion, sliced very thin ½ lb. hot Italian sausage, crumbled, fried, and drained 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese 1 cup Swiss cheese ¼ cup Parmesan cheese ¼ cup Mayonnaise ¼ cup slivered fresh basil Instructions: 1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees 2. Slice tomatoes and pat both sides with paper towel to remove some of the juice 3. In alternating layers, fill pie shell with tomatoes, onions, sausage and basil, reserving some basil to garnish. 4. In small bowl mix the cheeses with the mayonnaise and spread over pie. Cover loosely with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes. 5. Remove foil and bake for 30 minutes more. 6. Garnish with fresh basil slivers. Can be served hot or cold.

Zika virus spreads to people primarily through the bite of an infected mosquito. The mosquitoes that carry Zika are aggressive daytime biters, but they can also bite at night. A mosquito becomes infected when it bites a person already infected with Zika. That mosquito can then spread the virus by biting more people. Zika virus can also spread during sex with a man infected with Zika; from a pregnant woman to her fetus during pregnancy or around the time of birth; through blood transfusion (likely but not confirmed). Zika Symptoms Many people infected with Zika won’t have symptoms or will only have mild symptoms. The most common symptoms are fever, rash, joint pain, or red eyes. Other common symptoms include muscle pain and headache. Symptoms can last for several days to a week. People usually don’t get sick enough to go to the hospital, and they very rarely die of Zika. Once a person has been infected with Zika, they are likely to be protected from future infections.

Meet the Staff Jim Hastings

Senior Programming Please join us in welcoming Jim Hastings to the team at the Johnson City Senior Center. You may have seen him around the center for a while, but now he has settled down to take on a new challenge. Jim’s previous experience has been in athletics as a coach with various age groups, mostly working on the collegiate level. He retired after 45 years of coaching. Whereas he will continue to assist in the fitness operations of the center, he will also be scheduling some day outings and working with the various dance groups to ensure we are offering the classes that are of interest to you. You will see him at the Friday Night Dances as he heads that up also. On a more personal note, Jim has been married to his wife Judy for 35 years and has 4 children and 7 grandchildren. He was born in the same town as Loretta Lynn. She was a coal miner’s daughter and he was a coal miner’s son. He said the biggest difference is “that she could sing and I can’t”. Jim enjoys being around people and helping others. When Jim is not working, he enjoys outdoor activities such as duck hunting in Arkansas where he grew up.

Fitness Tidbits! Reducing Sedentary Behaviors: Sit Less and Move More There is strong scientific evidence that says frequent moderate- to vigorous-intensity exercise during the week plays a significant preventative role in cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity and some cancers. A Complete Physical Activity Program A well-rounded physical activity program includes aerobic exercise and strength training exercise, but not necessarily in the same session. This blend helps maintain or improve cardiorespiratory and muscular fitness and overall health and function. Regular physical activity will provide more health benefits than sporadic, high intensity workouts, so choose exercises you are likely to enjoy and that you can incorporate into your schedule. ACSM’s physical activity recommendations for healthy adults, updated in 2011, recommend at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity (working hard enough to break a sweat, but still able to carry on a conversation) five days per week, or 20 minutes of more vigorous activity three days per week. Combinations of moderateand vigorous-intensity activity can be performed to meet this recommendation. Examples of typical aerobic exercises are: • Walking • Running • Stair climbing • Cycling • Rowing • Cross country skiing • Swimming In addition, strength training should be performed a minimum of two days each week, with 8-12 repetitions of 8-10 different exercises that target all major muscle groups. This type of training can be accomplished using body weight, resistance bands, free weights, medicine balls, or weight machines. Position statement by American College of Sports Medicine
