JCSC Foundation News Our first Johnson City Senior Center Foundation Pickleball tournament was a huge success with 47 players playing LOTS of pickleball over a 2 day period. We want to thank our sponsors: Johnson City Convention and Visitor’s Bureau; Mooney’s Pharmacy; Chick-fiil-A Johnson City Crossings; Little Caesars; Olive Garden; Holiday Inn; Wheeler’s Bagels; Pickleball Central and Pickleball Rocks. Be on the lookout next year for a bigger and better tournament. Christmas is just around the corner and the Foundation Board for Johnson City Senior Center is working diligently on their Christmas box project which will provide boxes of food and household supplies to low income seniors. Your help is needed through donations and volunteers to help wrap, pack and deliver the boxes. Please consider making a donation if you have not already done so and brighten the lives of our seniors. Please see staff if interested in volunteering.

Inclement Weather Policy: If Johnson City Schools are closed for bad weather, the center will open at 10:00am and all instructor lead programs cancelled and the center will close at 5:00pm. If the Johnson City Schools are on a 2 hour delay for bad weather, the center will open at 10:00am and programs will occur as normal and the center will close at normal hours.

The Film Club Third Thursday of every month Thursday, December 20, 1-4p Cost: Free Join Rusty Sheridan, Professor at E.T.S.U. in the Media and Communication department, as he leads a monthly club that views, thinks critically, and discusses a different film each month. Johnson City German Club Thursdays, 9:30a-12p Cost: Free People of all ages and skill-levels are welcome. Attendance is not required. In the second class, they will present that PowerPoint to the class. In the third class, students will be shown how prepare an outside document and insert it into PowerPoint and how to insert a table or graph. For the fourth and final class, students will present their finished presentation to the class. The classes are designed to grow in complexity each session, and the “learn by doing” method will be used. Some computer knowledge is necessary. Participants will need to bring a Thumb (USB) drive. Outings Milligan Christmas Concert Saturday, December 1 Leave MPCC at 6:45p, return approx. 9:30p Cost: $1 The glorious sounds and sights of the season will be a great start to your Christmas festivities as the Milligan Music Department presents its annual Christmas concert. The performance will feature choirs, orchestra, and the organ in the beautifully decorated Mary B. Martin Auditorium of Seeger Memorial Chapel. The evening will also include a carol sing-along and will conclude with a moving candle-lighting and singing of “Silent Night.” The concert is free, but an offering with a suggested donation of $5 will be taken to benefit the Milligan music program. Register by November 30. U.S.O. Christmas Show at Jonesborough Repertory Theatre Saturday, December 8 Leave MPCC at 1:15p, return approx. 4:30p Cost: $16 Step back into the 1940s with Jonesborough Repertory Theatre’s radio station, WJRT, as the theatre presents the annual 1940s USO Christmas Show. Just as America entered World War II, radio airwaves served as a key source of entertainment and news for families on the home front, as well as entertainment for the troops at home and overseas. The radio cast will be broadcasting live radio skits as well as singing and dancing to many patriotic and familiar Christmas tunes as we honor our military families with this memorable Christmas celebration of our freedom. Seats are limited, No refunds. Register by December 6th. Billy Graham Christmas at the Library Wednesday, December 6. Departure time TBD. Cost: $41 Travel by motor coach to the Billy Graham Library for a delicious Christmas dinner at the Library, a live Nativity, Christmas caroling, and tour of the Library. Events Coming in January! Beginner Line Dance Class (Level 2) Instructor: Martha Davenport Cost: $30 (Silver Sneaker Discount $20) Mondays, beginning January 7, 2019. Seven (7) sessions going through February 25 2019. 5:30-6:15p Beginner Line Dance, Level 2 is for anyone who has completed the Absolute Beginner line dance class. It is recommended that new dancers start with the absolute beginner class and then follow it with this Level 2 Beginner class, however the class is also available for anyone who knows some of the basics of line dancing and wants to refresh their skills/knowledge. Each session will be 45 minutes. If inclement weather affects the class, it will be extended to make up the days. The 7-week class series is $30, or silver sneaker discount of $20.00. Pre-registration/ payment is required. Registration will close after the first session (January 7). If anyone has any questions about the class, contact Martha at drmd72@hotmail.com. Class size may be limited so reserve your space on the dance floor by pre-registering no later than December 31st. Start 2019 with an exercise program through line dancing!

Knitting ~ Skill Building Series Instructor: Deb Burger Cost: $10 per class Every Monday except the first Monday of the month 10:30-11:30a Come as often as you need to, working through 5 skill building projects. Work at your own speed, come when you need instruction and when you have finished the projects you will be able to read patterns and have the skills to tackle any project labeled intermediate on your own or in another group. Pattern books are provided and you may use any worsted weight yarn you choose. Deb Burger is a published author of both books and patterns in knitting and crochet. She has taught both crafts extensively in guilds, camps, at the John C. Campbell Folk School, and at her yarn shop in Jonesborough. She is a retired teacher who also loves reading, gardening, and making art in many media. She welcomes Righties, Lefties and those who have believed they are “too clumsy” or “have no talent.” Applique Design-Holiday Stocking Instructor: Janice Harrington Cost: $4 Monday December10 1-3p Join Janice and experience the Art of Applique with this Christmas Stocking project! Evidence-based studies show that Qigong practice can improve a wide variety of chronic health conditions including heart disease, diabetes, MS, and Parkinson’s disease, while reducing stress and promoting emotional health and mental function.
