The mission of the Johnson City Senior Center is to engage adults in Active Life through Active Living, so that your senior years are rewarding and productive. Travel is good for our health, and contributes to a longer life and more satisfying retirement. Tom Sightings (Sightings Over Sixty) lists four ways that travel improves life, especially for retirees. 1. Travel encourages you to be more active. 2. Travel offers social benefits. Travel can help you deepen relationships with family and friends, and offers opportunities to meet new people as well. Group travel, with friends from home or people brought together by shared interests, helps build social ties which promote good mental health. 3. There are cognitive rewards. No matter where you travel, you will be meeting new people, steering through unfamiliar places and trying out different things – all activities that stimulate and challenge the brain, which in turn promotes good cognitive function. 4. It improves your mood and lowers levels of stress. A 2013 survey sponsored by the Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies found that the majority of travelers (86 percent) said travel “improves their mood and outlook” about life in general. And most respondents also agreed that travel relieves stress and contributes to physical and mental well-being. While many people are aware of the benefits of taking a vacation, they don’t always appreciate that the effects of stress relief and general satisfaction linger on long after they get home. Don’t consider travel an expense - consider it an investment in your health, happiness and future!

Walking is fuss-free fitness. There’s no cost, and it’s easy to schedule. And if you do it regularly, it reduces the risk of heart disease and can help you burn fat and lose weight. Uphill walks work your calf muscles, hamstrings and buttocks. Downhill walks are great for your thighs (quads), and on level ground, your abdominals and lower back get a workout. Where to Walk Walk anywhere you like, whether it’s indoors on a treadmill or outside at the park, or around your local neighborhood. Experiment with different routes that will challenge you with hills and varying terrains. Sports dietitian Helen O’Connor, PhD, suggests parking your car farther away from your destination than you need to. Take the stairs. Or get off the elevator one floor early and walk that extra flight. Give yourself time to walk. Leave home a half hour earlier or take 10 extra minutes to walk to the store. How Hard and Long to Walk Start with a half-mile walk, three to four times a week. If you’ve been inactive, 15 minutes of walking may be plenty for your first few weeks. (It’s a good idea to discuss your plans with your doctor.) Then increase the frequency, aiming for a 30-to 60-minute walk each day of the week. Gradually raise your intensity level by walking on inclines, with hand weights or on wet sand. As you build your level of fitness, steadily climb to a comfortably challenging pace. You should still be able to hold a conversation even though you’re breathing a lot harder. At the end of your session, you should be tired and sweaty but not exhausted. At this workout level your body is successfully burning calories. If you prefer to walk indoors on a treadmill, get your heart pumping by varying the machine’s speed and incline. What to Wear and Bring • Comfortable Clothes. Look for fabrics that draw sweat away from the skin. Wear layers, and peel them off as you warm up. • Athletic Shoes. Find shoes that aren’t overly snug, because feet swell as you walk. Cushioning under the heel and forefoot are important, as is flexibility, so the ball of your foot can move freely. • Socks. Choose fibers that evaporate sweat and prevent blisters. Try double-layered or padded socks for walks on hard ground. • Water Bottle. Drink before you start and every half hour, more often if you’re sweating. • Sun Protection. Wear a hat, plus a layer of waterproof sunscreen with an SPF between 15 and 30. • Identification. Bring an ID and a few dollars, in case of an emergency. • Portable Music Player. Your favorite tunes can motivate you to walk a little farther and faster. Technique Tips • The walking step is a rolling motion. Strike the ground with your heel, roll through, then push off with your toe. If your feet land flat, your shoes are probably too stiff. • Watch your posture. Imagine that you have a piece of string coming up through the top of your head. This visualization will straighten you up in seconds. • Tighten your stomach muscles. Holding in your stomach supports your lower back and keeps abdominals strong. • Swing arms naturally. They help give you rhythm. To walk faster, don’t lengthen your stride, take shorter, quicker steps.

WATCH OUT FOR SCAMS It seems there are scams all over the place these days. You’ve won the lottery of some obscure country or a needy millionaire in Europe is seeking your help transferring funds to the United States. These kinds of scams can be upsetting, particularly when you realize the reason they exist — because so many people fall for them. Especially upsetting are the scams that target people who depend on Social Security benefits — and use Social Security’s name in their shady dealings. Recently, we have heard of a number of scams where individuals posing as Social Security employees call and ask for personal information like your name, Social Security number and bank account information. The caller alleges that we need this information so we can issue you additional funds or rebates or they allege that because of a computer glitch your personal information has been lost. Another scam used an email that was designed to look like it came from Social Security. It provided information about the annual cost-of-living-adjustment and directed readers to a website designed to look like Social Security’s site so people could “update their information” — valuable information to identity thieves and criminals.

Senior Lifestyles In an effort to combat such scams, we want to make one thing perfectly clear: Social Security will not send you an email asking you to give us your personal information, such as your Social Security number, date of birth, or other private information. If someone saying they are from Social Security does email you requesting information, don’t respond to the message. Instead, contact your local Social Security office or call us at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) to see whether we really need any information from you. Whatever you do, don’t fall victim to a scam. Don’t give out your personal information. Social Security and the Office of Inspector General (OIG) take these scams very seriously. We do everything we can to stop the perpetrators and educate the public. To report suspicious activity, please call the OIG Hotline at 1-800-269-0271. (If you are deaf or hard of hearing, call the OIG TTY number at 1-866-501-2101.) A Public Fraud Reporting form is also available online at OIG’s website: www. socialsecurity.gov/oig. Of course, there are times when Social Security may contact you to update your information. At such times, you will always receive prior notification from us by mail or telephone before a personal visit is made. When in doubt, contact us at 1-800-7721213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) and we can verify the identity of the Social Security employee who has contacted you.

Fitness Tidbit! Participating in a balanced fitness program contributes to your well-being at every age — and regular exercise is vital for older adults. Regular exercise can help control your blood pressure, body weight, and cholesterol levels. It reduces your risk of hardened arteries, heart attack, and stroke. It also strengthens your muscles, tendons, ligaments, and bones to help fight osteoporosis and lower your risk of falling or other injury. Keeping your body strong and limber can help you maintain your independence as you age. It allows you to continue the kinds of activities you’ve enjoyed your entire life. If you haven’t been physically active for a while, start slowly. Gradually build your endurance, strength, balance, and flexibility. Walking for just five or 10 minutes at a time on several days each week, is a great way to begin. Once you can walk for 30 minutes at a time, you’ve built a solid foundation and are ready to add more challenging activities to your routine. Starting a basic strength routine while you begin your aerobic routine will help you build the strength you need to support your aerobic workouts.

Dominion Senior Living of Johnson City Participating in and enjoying artistic endeavors can have a positive impact on health by creating a sense of purpose and keeping the mind busy. Here at Dominion our Art from the Heart program gets residents involved in creating beautiful oil paintings that they are able to share with friends and family. Ralph has been a dedicated painter since the program has begun, his artwork includes: sunsets, mountains, barns, and birds. When a fellow resident had fallen sick and was away from the community for weeks, she was not able to attend painting class to complete her picture. Knowing that she did not want to fall behind in class and out of the kindness of his heart, Ralph offered to put the finishing touches on her painting. Not only does painting have a positive effect on health, but it also creates a bond of friendship that is shown through the caring and love residents display to each other throughout the community.
