Please take advantage of the many different classes and programs that the center offers. If you are new to the center or had not been in the center for a while then don’t miss our “Try Us Out” event the first Thursday of each month at 9:00am. You will have the opportunity to meet our staff, ask questions about their programs and hear about new opportunities in the center. Tours will also be given. Please remember to sign in at one of the kiosks for the events and programs you are attending in the center. We want to make sure we are capturing all who attend our center. This data is very important to us and helps us to justify the programs we offer and add new programs and events.

The Johnson City Senior Center Foundation provides supplemental funding for our healthcare coordinator, Jeanne Clarke, RN; funds transportation for cultural activities outside of the Tri-Cities area; provides support through the center’s Fellowship program; and funds for the Spring Forward for seniors program.

Lunch is served from 11:30-12:00 each day Monday – Friday. Congregate meals are provided for us through FTHRA. The program is for the senior population 60+. If you wish to take a portion of the meal home with you, you will be responsible for bringing containers to place the food in and the transfer of the food. We look forward to serving you and we know that you will enjoy dining with your friends. Please reserve your meals by placing a checkmark in the first column on the reservation sheets located in the dining room. This must be done 48 hours in advance.

In this series of lectures we will focus on one of the greatest periods of Art History. The lectures will cover a time period from about 1400 to about 1520, from the early to the high Renaissance. We will study the differences between the Art of central and northern Italy. We will spend time on the city of Florence, the birthplace of the Renaissance. The series will focus on individual artists, presented in chronological order with an emphasis on the style and content of their work.

Let’s take the mystery out of the ancient art of decoupage (simply gluing paper)! With a simple spring project we will learn paper placement without wrinkles, how to get those crisp edges and how to seal your finished piece. When should you tear paper and when should you cut it? In this introductory class we will decorate a wooden box and learn the “wet” method but stay tuned for the next class using the dry or “iron on” method. Choose your paper from spring favorites provided in class.

Cross Stitch Class

If you would like to learn about Cross Stitch or practice skills that you already have come and join this class for an easy, relaxing project. Silk Scarf – Marbling Technique (Ages 18+)

In this fascinating technique floating colors are swirled into patterns. Then you capture your design by laying your silk scarf on top of the liquid to transfer the swirls to the fabric, creating unique and beautiful patterns. Cost includes all supplies and instruction. An apron is recommended.
Paint Pouring Art (Ages 18+)

In this class you will be making Acrylic ‘skins’. Sherry will demonstrate three types of technique or pours to create the skins. The skins can be used in projects such as Collage, handmade books and jewelry. Sherry will be scheduling classes in the coming months in which to use the skins made in this class. A fun-filled day that includes a boat tour of Lake Lure, lunch at the Lake House Restaurant (tax and tip included), Chimney Rock State Park, free time and dinner on your own in the charming town of Chimney Rock, and motor coach transportation. View a timeline of Bush Brothers & Company showing how the company changed with the times and reached customers, as well as the local community, throughout the years. Take a walk through a giant replica can of BUSH’S® Baked Beans, showing the bean’s journey from beginning to end. See the BUSH’S® Theater, featuring a short film which includes a welcome from Jay and Duke, an overview of the Bush family history and a glimpse of the modern methods of processing and canning beans. The theme is pink flamingos – beach attire, pink, and/or flamingos! The first hour will include a walk-through of the dances as needed. A mixture of beginner, improver and intermediate dances will be played. During the second hour, we will move along with lots of dance, dance, dance. Even if you are new to line dancing or just wondered what it is all about, come join the fun. All dancers are welcome. JCSC Seniors on the Go will meet on Tuesday, May 23 at 3:00 pm. We hope that you will attend and bring a friend. Please pre-register by calling the center at 434-6237; pre-registration helps staff plan for the meeting and provide adequate space.
Several day outings were announced at the April travel meeting and registration opens May 1. Day outings fill quickly even with a charter bus, so make your plans and register soon. No refunds are given on the day trips. The May highlight is the day trip to Lake Lure, North Carolina – more details are available in the Outings section.
We invite you to travel with JCSC Seniors on the Go in September to visit breath-taking Niagara Falls. This tour stays in the US, so no passport is needed. If you’ve never experienced the Falls on the Maid of the Mist, you’ll want to gather your friends and travel with us. Trip departs on Sunday, September 17, and returns on Saturday, September 23. Highlights include a journey to the falls on Maid of the Mist, a cruise on the Erie Canal, guided tour of Buffalo and a visit to the Buffalo Transportation Pierce Arrow Museum, the Erie Maritime Museum, 6 nights lodging, and 10 meals. All of this is only $1045 per person (double occupancy); singles add an additional $234. Final payment is due by July 10!
Sunshine Tours has offered to pick up passengers at the Johnson City Senior Center with a minimum of five people. The NC Zoological Park in Asheboro is a perfect outing with a grandchild; date is Saturday, September 2. The Virginia Beach Neptune Festival offers 2 nights in a Boardwalk hotel, dinner, and the Neptune International Sand Sculpting Championship; dates are September 29-October 1. You will need to register directly with Sunshine Tours by calling 800-552-0022, but tell them you would like to be picked up at the senior center.

Qigong is a part of traditional Chinese medicine that includes easy to learn, gentle, flowing movements that stimulate the meridian system of the body and promote relation and mindfulness. Class work also includes warmups, gentle stretching of all the major joints, and breath work. Evidence-based studies
show that Qigong practice can improve a wide variety of chronic health conditions including heart disease, diabetes, MS, and Parkinson’s disease, while reducing stress and promoting emotional health and mental function. With adaptations this class is appropriate for everyone regardless of physical limitations and can be done seated in a chair.

Our hands can do many things, the most important of which may be saving someone’s life. This program teaches how to perform hands-only CPR, a simple skill that can save lives. MPCC Outdoor Pickleball Courts

Champions of the court is for beginner/intermediate pickleball players. There will be 24 slots available each night and you must sign up each Thursday night you would like to play. Your starting doubles partner will be randomly selected and you will have a chance to play with other partners. Eight rounds of play will determine the champions of the court for that night. On
Tuesday, May 2 all the champions of the court from the previous weeks will play for the final champions of the court.
Pre-register by calling 423-434-5749 or at Memorial Park Community Center. Registration required the Monday prior to the Tuesday night play. Can only sign up for one week at a time. You can then sign up for the next week on Wednesday prior to the next Tuesday event. Play will start at exactly 6:00pm in order to get all rounds completed.

Learn more about Captain E.J. Smith and the unsinkable Molly Brown along with the people, music, fashion, sinking, and aftermath of the Titanic. The drama incorporates costumes, period music, photographs, and mementos to bring this story to life. Dress in your 1912-era finery for the costume contest. Funding for this event provided in part by a grant from Tennessee Commission on Aging & Disability for the Backyard Bucket List program. Performance presented by Mark & Margaret Hyre from Michigan.
