Welcome to the Johnson City Senior Center at Memorial Park Community Center. Hours of operation for the Community Center:
Monday – Friday 7:00am – 8:00pm
Saturday – 9:00am – 4:00pm Closed on Sunday
Please take advantage of the many different classes and programs that the center offers. If you are new to the center or had not been in the center for a while then don’t miss our “Try Us Out” event the first Thursday of each month at 9:00am. You will have the opportunity to meet our staff, ask questions about their programs and hear about new opportunities in the center. Tours will also be given.
Please remember to sign in at one of the kiosks for the events and programs you are attending In the center. We want to make sure we are capturing all who attend our center. This data is very important to us and helps us to justify the programs we offer and add new programs and events.

Have you registered for the 4th Annual “Paddles Up” Pickleball Tournament yet?
This tournament is sponsored by the Johnson City Senior Center Foundation as a fundraiser for helping the Johnson City Senior Center and its programs. “Paddles Up Tournament is November 3, 4, 5, 2022. Registration forms available at the recreation desk. The Johnson City Senior Center Foundation is a nonprofit 501 (c) 3 organization administered by a group of volunteers appointed by City Commission. The Foundation helps to provide supplemental funding for our healthcare coordinator, Jeanne Clarke, RN; funding transport for cultural activities outside of the Tri-Cities area; providing support through the center’s Fellowship program; and providing funding for the Spring Forward for seniors program whichprovides gro ceries and household items for low-income seniors in our area. There are many ways you can help our Foundation: making a monetary donation to the Foundation; signing up for the Kroger Rewards program if you shop at Kroger; consider the Foundation in your estate planning; making a donation to the Foundation through your retirement funds or participating in our fundraising events.
Alert: Many of our members have fragrance sensitivity. Perfumes, aftershaves and other scented beauty products may cause allergic reactions. To be considerate of our members and staff please refrain from using scented products. Thank You!
Lunch is served from 11:30-12:00 each day Monday – Friday. Congregate meals are provided for us through FTHRA. The program is for the senior population 60+. If you wish to take a portion of the meal home with you, you will be responsible for bringing containers to place the food in and the transfer of the food. We look forward to serving you and we know that you will enjoy dining with your friends. Please reserve your meals by placing a checkmark in the first column on the reservation sheets located in the dining room. This must be done 48 hours in advance.

Members of the Center will be able to check out an Access card to the Computer Lab at the Senior Front Desk to gain entrance into the Lab from 8:00a-5:00p, Monday through Friday. The Lab will be closed from 8:30a-10:30a every other Thursday. Times/Availability subject to change.

Mitten Tree Project
Each December we host girls from Girls Inc. for a Christmas gathering where they receive a gift of hats, scarves and mittens. We are collecting these items from our members for this event and would like to invite you to knit or crochet for this worthwhile project. There is yarn and other supplies here at the center if you need them. Contact Chyrl or Ann for supplies or information. Any donations for this project are greatly appreciated!
Musical Voices (Ages 50+)

Join this welcoming group if you desire to sing gospel music and share the joy of music with local nursing homes.
Johnson City String Band (for mally known as Heart Strings) (Ages 50+)
Cost: Free Tuesdays 10am–12pm
Come learn and have fun with this welcoming group of amateur musicians. We play a variety of music including gospel, bluegrass and even Irish jigs. Pencil Drawing Made Easy (Ages 18+)

Tuesday afternoon drawing offers an encouraging, relaxed atmosphere in which to create and learn. Bring your materials and projects and take advan tage of any instruction needed in technique or skill. Materials will be available for anyone who needs them.
Bring Out the Artist in You (Ages 18+)

Are you looking for a place to hone your painting skills. Look no further. ‘Charlie’ will be available to offer guidance and assistance and share her knowledge in Oil, Acrylic and Watercolor technique. Bring your project and materials in for expert advice in an encour aging and relaxed atmosphere. Suitable for any skill level. Feel free to come by and visit during class to see what it is all about and if you would like to sign up. We encourage all former Art students to join us.
Sewing Group - A Community Service Project (Ages 18+)

Cost: Free Wednesdays, 1-3:30pm
We have a surplus of fabric which has been donated to the center. In an effort to give back to the community, we want to be
a blessing to those in need by sewing lap quilts and/or pet beds. Sewing machines will be set up and all supplies will be made available. Items made will be donated to the community. For September, the group will focus on quilts for the American Red Cross.
Senior Chorale

Join this lively group who loves to sing a variety of songs including show tunes and popular songs. This group is led by Cherry Smith. The group is open to anyone who is looking for a low stress, less demanding group with which to perform. No audition required.
Needle and Fiber Arts (Ages 18+)
Cost: Free Fridays 11am – 1pm
A gathering of folks who are interested in the fiber arts. Bring your project to work on and share ideas and skills. Join this group to share and learn and enjoy the company of others while you work. Please clean up when you are finished and don’t store items at the Center.
Dulcimer Practice/Jam Session (Ages 18+)

This is a time to get together and work on your skills and share ideas while enjoying the company of other players.

Video Series – How to Look at and Understand Great Art (Ages 18+)

In these lectures we will be introduced to the components of art – color, line, perspective, and composition as well as point of view, motion, light and texture. We will learn how the artist uses symbolism and communicates a message to the viewer. Many dif ferent media will be included and many great works of art featured. The course covers great art from the 13th century to the present.
Video Series - The World’s Greatest Paintings (Ages 18+)

This Video Series will explore more than 60 of the world’s greatest paintings. Paintings that produce a unique initial impact when they ae viewed, whether for the first or the fiftieth time. Knitting Class Series (Ages 8+)

This class will meet for a six week series and is suitable for absolute beginners as well as experienced knitters, and right or left handed folks. It’s a great opportunity to learn, to refresh skills, or learn advanced skills and problem solving. Come and learn from a master knitter in a warm and en joyable atmosphere! All supplies provided.
Creative Card Making (Ages 16+)

Pen and Ink Class (Ages 18+)

Come and explore the old fashioned dip pen and black India ink. We will learn about the techniques used in ink for shading and texture and work on a drawing. Step by step instruc tion will be provided. We will be using a basic all-purpose Hunt 56 pen nib. All supplies furnished, but feel free to bring your own materials if you wish. An apron is recommended.
Creating With Nature (Ages 18+)

Bring your imagination and create with a variety of handmade papers, dried flowers, plants and other natural objects. You will have a choice of backgrounds to work on. This is a relaxing and fun way to compose artistic arrangements. All materials fur nished. You are welcome to bring your own materials if you wish.
Fall Décor-Corn Husk Art (Ages 8+)

Beginner Basket Making Class (Ages 18+)

Wednesday, October 19th, 12:30 – 3:30pm
October’s project will feature a Pumpkin Basket built on round reed hoops. This is a ribbed basket with a god’s eye that holds the ribs. Orange and brown reed. Experience with god’s eye is helpful, but not required. This is a hands on class, your basket will be finished and ready to take home by the end of class!
Jewelry Making Class (Ages 18+)
Instructor: Patty Baker

Wednesday, October 12th, 11am – 1pm
October’s jewelry project will feature a spiral bracelet made
with memory wire so that it wraps around your wrist and stays in place! The bracelet will be made of colored beads with larger accent beads. You will also be making a matching pair of earrings that dangle with a charm at the end. Suitable for all skill levels – beginner as well as ex perienced! All supplies provided. Come and enjoy making some thing beautiful!
Beginner Spinning Class (Ages 18+)

Thursday, October 13th, 11am – 1pm
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to spin your own yarn? Join us for a beginning spinning class! Beth will demonstrate how to prepare a fleece for spinning, and you will be able to try your hand at card ing wool, which is the last step of processing the wool before spinning. You will then learn how to spin and ply yarn with a drop spindle. Cost includes the lesson, wool and use of a drop spindle.

Multimedia Cigar Box (Ages 18+)

In this class you will work with a combination of different mate rials, such as paint, texturing technique, and various embellish ments. Sherry will demonstrate some new techniques and will have an example on display. Cost includes all supplies and instruction. An apron is recom mended.
Sun and Wind Catchers (Ages 18+)
Instructor: Sherry Bernheisel
Cost: $8
Friday, October 21st, 10am4pm
Your choice to make either a sun catcher or wind chime. The sun catcher uses two brass loops, a string of colored beads with wire and a crystal gem in the center. Or make a rustic wind chime us ing washers and beads dangling from a stick or a piece of drift wood. The washers are painted with alcohol inks and sprayed with clear UV-resistant spray. All materials furnished. An apron is recommended.
Chameleon Cell Painting (Ages 18+)

In this class you will learn a pour/ swipe technique using fluid acrylics and then adding a cell medium for a personal and unique, one of a kind design. This is a very easy and fun project! All supplies furnished. An apron is recommended.

Country Tonite Christmas in Pigeon Forge

Cost: $55 includes ticket to the show, mo tor coach transportation and lunch. The magic of Christmas abounds as the talent ed renditions of Christmas favorites combined with beautiful choreography, brightly decorated holiday sets and colorful costumes bring the enchantment of Christmas to the Country Tonite stage. The popular cast covers a number of holiday clas sics for a nostalgic, spirited holiday celebration that will be enjoyed by all ages. You’ll also find a few special guest performers during the Christmas production that you certainly won’t see any other time of the year, Frosty the Snowman, Santa Claus, and everyone’s fa vorite ballerina in the dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy. Toys will also come alive in the magical song “Where are you Christmas.” Lunch will be at the Applewood Grill in Sevierville. Registration will begin on October 3rd.

Qigong is a part of traditional Chinese medicine that includes easy to learn, gentle, flowing movements that stimulate the meridian system of the body and promote relation and mindfulness. Class work also includes war mups, gentle stretching of all the major joints, and breath work. Evidence-based studies show that Qigong practice can improve a wide variety of chronic health conditions including heart disease, diabetes, MS, and Parkinson’s disease, while reducing stress and promoting emotional health and mental function. With adaptations this class is appropriate for everyone regardless of physical limitations and can be done seated in a chair.

Court use will be first come, first serve unless otherwise designated for a special program, activity, or event
During peak times when courts are full and players are waiting to play:
• Court time will be shared equally
• NO Singles
• Waiting players will place their paddles in the “Paddle Rack” (left to right)
• Court time limited to two games to 11, win by 1
• Exit court immediately – return to waiting area outside courts
• Play again – place your paddle in first available opening in the “Paddle Rack” (L-R)
• Next up when court is open – next paddles from L-R
• Less than four players waiting, the suitable number of players will stay on the court to fill the court with 4 players
• Limit warm-up time to no more than 5 minutes

Singles Table Tennis in the Game Room. Great way to get some exercise and make new friends.

Family Pickleball 101 (Ages 7+)
Gym 1 and 2 – Saturdays October 1, 8, 15, 22 10:00-11:30am
Cost: $20 for family (Children must be 7 and older)
Pickleball is the fastest growing sport and it originated with a family so come, as a family and learn how to play pickleball. Paddles and balls provided. Please register by Wednesday, September 24, 2022 at Memorial Park Community Center.

Are you new to the center or want to know more about our programs that we offer, then you don’t want to miss our “Try Us Out” session. This will be a session to meet staff, find out what programs we offer, take a tour and ask questions about the center and its programs. You will also be given information about any new programs being offered in the next month. Light refreshments will be served and some free try it out vouchers for certain classes will be given. Please register with the front desk or call 434-6237 to reserve your spot.

We will hike a little down the others trails and then head up, up, up to the overlook. Beautiful views from up there. Steep and very rocky .This will be a 4.5 mile hike. Bring plenty of water. Please register.
Bays Mountain Foliage Hike (Ages 50+)

This is a beautiful hike to see the fall leaves. This will be a 3 mile hike. All groups are welcome. We will meet at the park in the main parking lot. $5.00 a car. If you want to follow me I can use the city pass to get you in but no transportation will be provided on this one. I will leave the center at 8:00am .Rest rooms in the park. Bring plenty of water.

Warriors Path State Park Lake Shore trail Ages (50+)

This hike has Very steep stairs going down to the trail. We will go slow but just be mindful of this. We will hike down as it runs right beside the water. This is a 3mile hike. This is a Beautiful hike and great place to take pictures. Bring plenty of water. Please register.

This hike will be down the Flint Creek Trail. This will be about 4.5 miles. There are several Bridges on this trail so we will not be rock hopping on this one. Bring a snack we will stop on the trail and have some time to enjoy before heading back. Bring plenty of water. Please register.
