JCSC Foundation News We want to say a special thank you to everyone who made a donation to the Johnson City Senior Center Foundation during our spring appeal. Your donations help to provide support to your senior center. JCSC Foundation Board is starting to work on their next fundraiser, a pickleball tournament to be held this fall. More details will be given later. Right now, if you are a Kroger shopper you can add to the funds for the senior center by joining their rewards program and each time you shop a percentage is given to the Senior Center Foundation. Please see a staff member for more information. Again thank you!

Hip Hikers* AT @ Camp Creek to Allen Gap Hot Springs, NC • Cost: Free Thursday, July 12th, 7:30a Beginning at the site of the historically significant Camp Creek Bald Fire Tower and Viking Mountain Resort, we will descend around 6.5 miles towards Allen Gap, passing by the Little Laurel AT Shelter on the way down. From local history and legend to amazing vista views of TN & NC, this section of the AT does not disappoint. Trail rated Easy with decreasing elevation change; pack a trail lunch; carpooling from MPCC; returning by 3:00p. Mountains-to-Sea Trail: Craven Gap to Folk Art Center Asheville, NC • Cost: Free Thursday, July 19th, 7:30a We will begin our Mountains-to-Sea adventure at Craven Gap just off one of the higher points of elevation off the Blue Ridge Parkway. As we trek through the wooded Appalachian forest on the old wagon road to Rattlesnake Lodge, we’ll pass by breathtaking views of Hawk’s Creek Valley and then break at Lunch Rocks for, well… lunch! The Folk Art Center will begin to come into view as we wrap up our 4.6 mile journey. This will be a point-to-point/shuttle hike. Trail rated Easy with a Moderate section, some elevation gain; pack a trail lunch, carpooling from MPCC; returning by 3:00p.

Hiking 101* AT @ Shook Branch to Watauga Dam Hampton, TN Cost: $4 Tuesday, July 10th, 7:30 Since its creation in 1948, the Watauga Dam has protected the Tennessee Watershed from another devastating, fatal flood. While hiking 2.5 miles on the legendary Appalachian Trail that passes thru Shook Branch Beach, we will navigate down to the Dam soaking up the Watauga Lake environment and learning about the cultural history of the area, including the “The Town that Wouldn’t Drown”. Basic Home Repairs 101: Second Wednesday of each month from May through November Wednesday, July 11 10:30a • Cost: Free As a follow-up to the Basic Home Repairs 101: Home Plumbing Repairs Course 1 of 2 class held last June, a Tennessee registered Professional Engineer with guest will host the follow-up Basic Home Repairs 101: Home Plumbing Repairs Course 2 of 2. This will be the second of a two-part plumbing course to detail laws and options/ methods on self-performing plumbing repairs on fixtures such as sinks, toilets, tubs, and hot water heaters. Presentation will also highlight maintenance considerations for the plumbing fixtures and cautions when trying to fix items connected to septic system or with electrical/gas ties. Considerations on replacement selection will also be discussed. The Basic Home Repairs courses will continue every second Wednesday of each month with the next August presentation scheduled to overview home electrical repairs and replacements along with highlights on upgrade options to enhance safety and/or your lifestyle. For the fourth and final class, students will present their finished presentation to the class. The class is designed to grow in complexity each session, and the “learn by doing” method will be used. Outings Gatlinburg Craftsmen’s Fair Tuesday, July 17 Leave MPCC at 9a, return approx. 7p Cost: $6 for transportation, $7 to be paid at Convention Center for entry to Fair This is a fantastic opportunity to see and purchase all sorts of handmade products in one location as well as see how many of them are made as craftsmen often make their products and do demonstrations at the Gatlinburg Craftsman Fair! The fair is located inside the Gatlinburg Convention Center in downtown Gatlinburg. You can expect to find some of the best arts, crafts, and music at the Gatlinburg Craftsmen’s Fair as it has been voted one of the Southeast’s “Most Popular Events” with 200 booths of incredible crafts! We will leave Gatlinburg at 5:00p. Register by July 15. History Happy Hour at the Chester Inn Thursday, July 19 5:45p • Cost: $1 The Heritage Alliance is proud to present the second season History Happy Hour at the Chester Inn State Historic Site and Museum in downtown Jonesborough! This monthly program will feature a wide range of topics, including 19th century optical illusions, Sabine Hill, the Annals of Tennessee History, and much more! The region is full of history, and people who know about history, and History Happy Hour is a chance for them to share their exciting knowledge with the wider public. The program is a collaborative effort between local organizations, so audiences will have the chance to interact with multiple groups. History Happy Hour will be held at the Chester Inn Museum on the third Thursday of the month. Admission is free, and the program will start at 6:30 p.m. The goal of the program is to offer insightful history to the public, foster a collaborative relationship with various individuals and organizations, and increase the role of the Chester Inn State Historic Site and Museum as a community meeting place Source: jonesborougtn. org. Monday, July 23 9:30a • Cost: Free Join Dr. Gary Henson, Planetarium Director-Department of Physics and Astronomy, as he leads you on an adventure through space. The planetarium now houses a new state-ofthe-art full dome digital projection system

which immerses the viewer in computer simulations and animations. It offers a virtual reality experience in space. The recently updated planetarium has a great domed ceiling which creates a realistic view of outer space. Please Pre-register. Knoxville Museum of Art and Museum of East Tennessee History Wednesday, July 25 Leave MPCC at 8:30a, return approx. 5p Cost: $15 for transportation and admission The Knoxville Museum of Art celebrates the art and artists of East Tennessee. Exhibitions for July include: Scenic Impressions Southern Interpretations from the Johnson Collection, Higher Ground A Century of the Visual Arts in East Tennessee, Facets of Modern and Contemporary Glass, plus many more. We will also take a guided tour through the Museum of East Tennessee History, it has been developed to capture the interest of a wide range of audiences. For instance, the interactive displays found in the signature exhibition, Voices of the Land: The People of East Tennessee, allow visitors the opportunity to not only be in the presence of original artifacts that stood witness to the region’s past but also to hear first-person accounts of what life was like, all amidst a backdrop of compelling, historic imagery. The Museum mounts a number of changing exhibits throughout the year, too, each of which focuses on a unique aspect of East Tennessee. Lunch on your own. Limited Seats, No Refunds. Join us on Thursday, July 12 at 3:00 pm for the monthly JCSC Seniors on the Go travel meeting. This is our last month to register for the Memphis/Tunica trip! Cost is $557 pp/ do; singles will need to add $189 to the cost. Offered by Todlow Coach. Final payment is due by July 17. The Diamond Tours motor coach trips include travel insurance in the trip cost. Please keep in mind the cancellation policy for the motor coach trips: • 30 paid participants are required to conduct a trip at the advertised price. • Trips are possible with a small number, but will require an “upcharge” to be paid by the registered participants. • Reimbursements for individual cancellations will be made and honored up to two weeks prior to departure provided the total remains at 30 paid participants. For the period from two to four weeks prior to departure date, reimbursement will depend on what commitments have been made by Diamond Tours for travel arrangements. • Cancellations more than 30 days prior to the trip are honored for any reason regardless of the number of paid participants. • Cancellations within two weeks of the trip will require you to file a claim for reimbursement through the travel insurance; the claim must fall within the requirements of the travel insurance company.
