JCSC Foundation News Welcome to our newest member, Ken Cohen! Ken is an active volunteer with Senior Chorale and Musical Voices, and is excited to be a part of the Foundation Board. If you would like to be a part of this busy and active Board to help raise additional financial support for the Senior Center, applications are available online on the Johnson City website. Thank you to everyone who helped make the Deerslayer OCR a huge success. This was truly a community effort. There were 271 individuals registered for this first year race. It was a great morning and the race had almost as many spectators as racers. 70 competitive racers received the majority of media attention, but it was the 200 For Fun racers that stole the show with their enthusiasm and laughter. The average age of the racers was 38 and ranged from 18 to 68 years old with 45% of the group being female racers. This type of race requires a great deal of race day support and there were around 70 volunteers working the day of the race. The Deerslayer was such a success for a first year race that we are already in the process of planning for next year’s race, which will be April 1, 2017 (no foolin’)! If you would like to participate in the planning, please see one of the Foundation Board members and join the committee.

Protecting Yourself and Your Family from Ticks • • • • • • • • •
When you are outdoors, use insect repellent containing an EPA-registered active ingredient. Follow the directions on the package. Wear light-colored socks and pants to help spot ticks. Tuck pant legs into socks to reduce the risk of ticks getting under your clothing. Spray socks and pant cuffs with a repellent for added protection. A daily ritual of examining yourself, your kids, and your family pet for ticks should be followed. Stay away from heavily wooded areas and high grassy areas. Keep your lawn well maintained. Brush leaves away from your home. Trim low-lying bushes to let in as much sunlight as possible. This will help keep your yard from becoming a shelter for small mammals that may act as a host for ticks. If you find a tick, use a pair of tweezers to grasp the tick’s head as close to the skin as possible (without crushing it) and pull it directly out. Do not remove ticks with petroleum jelly or hot objects, such as matches or cigarettes. These methods can increase the chance of a host tick injecting you with dangerous bacteria.
Meet the Staff Fontaine Charles
Transportation Aide & More!
Fontaine Charles’ official title with the Johnson City Senior Center is Transportation Aide; however, he does so much more. He is the “go to” man for whoever needs assistance with whatever. He brings a wealth of knowledge and common sense to assist in enriching the lives of so many around the center. He is committed to the Senior Center and enjoys driving the bus for the seniors and being part of the team. He has been married to his wife Gail for 43 years and is the father of two daughters and five grandchildren. He is a “hometown boy” of Johnson City, having lived here all his life and even on the same street for the past 63 years. After retiring from Eastman, he knew he had so much more to accomplish in life and enjoyed helping others, so he joined up with the team at the center and is such a blessing to the seniors of the community. He faithfully serves at his church by directing the men’s choir and is also the drummer. Being very talented, he has many hobbies, some of which are restoring old cars, working on computers and just being “Papa” to his grandchildren.

Sports Pickleball Pickleball is a racquet sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis. It is usually played with 4 players, but it can be played with 2 or 3 players. Players use solid paddles made of wood or composite materials to hit a perforated polymer ball similar to a wiffle ball over a net. The dimensions and layout are similar to badminton. The net and rules are similar to tennis, with a few modifications. Game started during summer of 1965 on Bainbridge Island, Washington, at the home of then State Representative Joel Pritchard who later was elected to the House of Representatives for the State of Washington. He and his friends returned from a round of golf and found their families bored one Saturday afternoon. They attempted to set up a badminton court, but couldn’t find the shuttlecock. So, they improvised with a wiffle ball, lowered the net, and fabricated paddles of plywood from a nearby shed. The name pickleball came from the term “pickle boat” referring to the last boat to return with its catch. According to Joel Pritchard’s wife, Joan, the name came after she stated that it reminded her of the Pickle Boat in crew where oarsmen were chosen from the leftovers of other boats. Pickleball is a very popular event at Memorial Park Community Center and is growing in popularity among all ages. There is a national organization for pickleball, USA Pickleball Association. The website is www.usapa. org. Pickleball is offered Monday, Wednesday and Friday at MPCC from 8:0011:30am. Coming this Fall will be an opportunity to learn the game of pickleball during our Lifelong Sports Journey series.

Exercise for Your Bone Health Vital at every age for healthy bones, exercise is important for treating and preventing osteoporosis. Not only does exercise improve your bone health, it also increases muscle strength, coordination, and balance, and it leads to better overall health. Why Exercise? Like muscle, bone is living tissue that responds to exercise by becoming stronger. Young women and men who exercise regularly generally achieve greater peak bone mass (maximum bone density and strength) than those who do not. For most people, bone mass peaks during the third decade of life. After that time, we can begin to lose bone. Women and men older than age 20 can help prevent bone loss with regular exercise. Exercising allows us to maintain muscle strength, coordination, and balance, which in turn helps to prevent falls and related fractures. This is especially important for older adults and people who have been diagnosed with osteoporosis. The Best Bone Building Exercise The best exercise for your bones is the weight-bearing kind, which forces you to work against gravity. Some examples of weight-bearing exercises include weight training, walking, hiking, jogging, climbing stairs, tennis, and dancing. Examples of exercises that are not weight-bearing include swimming and bicycling. Although these activities help build and maintain strong muscles and have excellent cardiovascular benefits, they are not the best way to exercise your bones. Exercise Tips If you have health problems—such as heart trouble, high blood pressure, diabetes, or obesity—or if you are age 40 or older, check with your doctor before you begin a regular exercise program. According to the Surgeon General, the optimal goal is at least 30 minutes of physical activity on most days, preferably daily. Listen to your body. When starting an exercise routine, you may have some muscle soreness and discomfort at the beginning, but this should not be painful or last more than 48 hours. If it does, you may be working too hard and need to ease up. Stop exercising if
Page 7 you have any chest pain or discomfort, and see your doctor before your next exercise session. If you have osteoporosis, ask your doctor which activities are safe for you. If you have low bone mass, experts recommend that you protect your spine by avoiding exercises or activities that flex, bend, or twist it. Furthermore, you should avoid high-impact exercise to lower the risk of breaking a bone. You also might want to consult with an exercise specialist to learn the proper progression of activity, how to stretch and strengthen muscles safely, and how to correct poor posture habits. An exercise specialist should have a degree in exercise physiology, physical education, physical therapy, or a similar specialty. Be sure to ask if he or she is familiar with the special needs of people with osteoporosis. A Complete Osteoporosis Program Remember, exercise is only one part of an osteoporosis prevention or treatment program. Like a diet rich in calcium and vitamin D, exercise helps strengthen bones at any age. But proper exercise and diet may not be enough to stop bone loss caused by medical conditions, menopause, or lifestyle choices such as tobacco use and excessive alcohol consumption. It is important to speak with your doctor about your bone health. Discuss whether you might be a candidate for a bone mineral density test. If you are diagnosed with low bone mass, ask what medications might help keep your bones strong. The National Institutes of Health Osteoporosis and Related Bone Diseases ~ National Resource Center acknowledges the assistance of the National Osteoporosis Foundation in the preparation of this publication.

In an effort to help stop elder abuse, here is some information from the Tennessee Department of Human Services and Adult Protective Services (APS) about the different types of abuse and neglect and how to stop it in its tracks: Neglect - occurs when the basic needs of a dependent adult are not met by a caregiver. Neglect may be unintentional, resulting from the caregiver’s lack of ability to provide or arrange for the care or services the adult requires. Neglect also may be due to the intentional failure of the caregiver to meet the adult’s needs. Self-Neglect - occurs when a dependent adult is unable to care for him/herself or to obtain needed care. The impairments result in significant danger to the adult and in some situations deterioration can occur to the point that the adult’s life may be at risk. Abuse - (physical, sexual, and emotional) generally involves more extreme forms of harm to the adult, including the infliction of pain, injury, mental anguish, unreasonable confinement, or other cruel treatment. Financial Exploitation - occurs when a caregiver improperly uses funds intended for the care or use of the adult. These are funds paid to the adult or to the caregiver by a governmental agency. If you suspect elder abuse, please make a report to 1-888-APSTENN (1-888-277-8366) or online at https://reportadultabuse.dhs. tn.gov/.

Fitness Tidbits! Exercise and the Older Adult
By the year 2030, the number of individuals 65 years and over will reach 70 million in the United States alone. Those 85 and older will then be the fastest-growing segment of our population. We must determine the extent and mechanisms by which exercise and physical activity can improve health, functional capacity, quality of life, and independence in this population. Current evidence clearly indicates that participation in a regular exercise program is an effective way to reduce and/or prevent a number of the functional declines associated with aging. Older adults have the ability to adapt and respond to both endurance and strength training. Aerobic/endurance training can help to maintain and improve various aspects of heart and lung function and cardiac output, and such exercise can enhance endurance. Strength/resistance training will help offset the loss in muscle mass and strength typically associated with aging, thereby improving functional capacity. Also important, reduction in risk factors associated with disease (heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis, and so on) will improve health status and contribute to an increase in lifespan. Together, these training adaptations will greatly improve the functional capacity of older men and women, therefore improving their quality of life and extend independent living. Taken from the American College of Sports Medicine current Comment section.
