He moved to our area of the mountains in 2007 and has spent his years here researching his family history and Tennessee history. For the past seven years he has served as the President of the Tipton Family Association of America. He currently serves as Vice President of the Friends Group at Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park. For over a thousand years before the arrival of European explorers, Sycamore Shoals and adjacent lands had been inhabited by Native Americans. During the American Revolution, Sycamore Shoals was both the site of Fort Watauga, where part of a Cherokee invasion was thwarted in 1776, and the mustering ground for the Over mountain in 1780. June 2017
Alzheimer’s Awareness Month
June is Alzheimer`s Awareness Month. Many people ask what are the signs of Alzheimer`s disease? Ten Signs for Early Detection: 1. Memory loss that disrupts daily life. One of the most common signs of Alzheimer`s, especially in the early stages, is forgetting recently learned information. Others include forgetting important dates or events; asking the same information over and over; relying on memory aides (e.g., reminder notes or electronic devices) or family members for things they use to handle on their own. What`s typical? Sometimes forgetting names or appointments, but remembering them later. 2. Challenges in planning or solving problems. Some people may experience changes in their ability to develop and follow a plan or work with numbers. They may have trouble following a familiar recipe or keeping track of monthly bills. They may have difficulty concentrating and take much longer to do things than they did before. What`s typical? Making occasional errors when balancing a checkbook. 3. Difficulty completing familiar tasks at home, at work or at leisure. People with Alzheimer`s often find it hard to complete daily tasks. Sometimes, people may have trouble driving to a familiar location, managing a budget at work or remembering the rules of a favorite game. What`s typical? Occasionally needing help to use the settings on the microwave or to record a television show. 4. Confusion with time and place. People with Alzheimer`s can lose track of dates, seasons, and the passage of time. They may have trouble understanding something if it`s not happening immediately. Sometimes they may forget where they are or how they got there. What s typical? Getting confused about the day of the week but figuring it out later. 5. Trouble understanding visual images and spatial relationships. For some people, having vision problems is a sign of Alzheimer`s. They may have difficulty reading, judging distance and determining color or contrast. In terms of perception, they may pass a mirror and think someone else is in the room. They may not recognize their own reflection. What`s typical? Vision changes related to cataracts. 6. New problems with words in speaking or writing. People with Alzheimer`s may have trouble following or joining a conversation. They may stop in the middle of a conversation and have no idea how to continue or they may repeat themselves. They may struggle with vocabulary, having problems finding the right word or call things by the wrong name (e.g. calling a watch a” hand clock”).What`s typical? Sometimes having trouble finding the right word. 7. Misplacing things and losing ability to trace steps. A person with Alzheimer`s disease may put things in unusual places. They may lose things and be unable to go back over their steps to find them again. Sometimes, they accuse others of stealing. This may occur more frequently over time. What`s typical? Misplacing things from time to time, such as a pair of glasses or the remote control. 8. Decreased or poor judgment. People with Alzheimer`s may experience changes in judgment or decision making. For example, they may use poor judgment when dealing with money, giving large sums of money to telemarketers. They pay less attention to grooming or keeping themselves clean. What`s normal? Making a bad decision every once and awhile. 9. Withdrawal from work or social activities. A person with Alzheimer’s may start to remove themselves from hobbies, social activities, work projects or sports. They have trouble keeping up with a favorite sports team or remembering how to complete a hobby. They may also avoid being social because of all the changes they have experienced. What is typical? Sometimes feeling weary of work and social obligations. 10. Changes in mood or personality. The mood and personalities of people with Alzheimer`s can change. They can become confused, suspicious, depressed, fearful or anxious. They may be easily upset at home, at work, with friends or in places where they are out of their comfort zone. What`s typical? Developing very specific ways of doing things or becoming irritable when a routine is disrupted. If you have any questions about these warning signs, the Alzheimer`s Association recommends consulting a physician. Early diagnosis provides the best opportunities for treatment, support and future planning. For more information, call 800-272-3900

JCSC Seniors on the Go will meet on Thursday, June 15 at 3:00 pm. The travel team has developed a list of motorcoach trips for 2018, but we need your input! Survey forms are available at the registration desks. You may also find a survey in this newsletter on page 5.
Kids Triathlon August 19 Join us for the 5th Annual Dive Ride and Stride Kid’s Triathlon! This is a great way to introduce your children to the triathlon world at a young age! Children will participate in an age appropriate swim, bike, and run during this event. More details to come!
Reminders about motorcoach travel: Many of the trips require a lot of walking. Bus regulations do not allow passengers to remain on the bus during excursions, tours or free time. We suggest that you begin a walking program prior to the trip so that you are able to participate in all of the activities offered on the trips. Please limit the use of cologne or perfume on the bus. Many passengers are sensitive to scents or have allergies; in an enclosed area for a long period of time, scents can permeate throughout the bus. Thank you for your consideration of your fellow passengers. The bus trips stop every 2 to 2.5 hours for breaks. We encourage you to take advantage of every break and walk a short distance. We are still accepting reservations for the Miami/Key West, Washington DC and Ark Encounter trips, although space is limited.

Fitness Tidbit! Fitness Gaming
Active video games are all the rage from virtual dance contests and river rafting to tennis, boxing, and yoga. Studies show that many of the more vigorous “exergames” can boost fitness in otherwise inactive people. In one study of adolescents, energy expenditure from a variety of active video games was comparable to that of walking on a treadmill at 3 mph, an intensity high enough to promote health and fitness. As long as you opt for products that really get you moving, including fitness gaming as a part of your active lifestyle, you can burn off some extra calories, stay fit, and have a great time with family and friends.
