JCSC Foundation News Do you shop at Kroger? If so, you can help the Johnson City Senior Center by signing up for their rewards program. Each time you shop 5% of your purchases for gas, groceries or pharmacy will be designated to the JCSC Foundation. We have a new number, so please go into your Kroger account or set up an account. Here’s the steps: • Go to www.Kroger.com – Click on the community link. • Click on “Community Rewards.” • Sign in, if you are already registered, if not, create an account by completing the required information and enter the Kroger Plus Card number found on the back of your card. • Then designate the Johnson City Senior Center Foundation (organization number BL187) under the community rewards section. That’s it! • If you were already a rewards member, you will need to go into your account and click on the new number for the senior center. Thanks! We also have Food City gift cards in the amount of $25 that you can purchase at the senior desk. You may want these as stocking stuffers.

Hiking, Walkers & Talkers
Hip Hikers* House Mountain Corryyton, TN Free • Thursday, November 1, 7:30a This is a loop trail of about 4 miles that is rated moderate. Be forewarned that the trail ascends over 1000 feet in a mile via switchbacks and the trail coming down can be very tricky in spots. This will be a self-directed hike, meaning that there will be no staff leader. Each hiker is responsible for himself/herself. Please assess your physical ability as this will be a challenging hike. Be sure to pack a lunch. The group will carpool from MPCC and plan to return at 3:00pm. Mystery Hike Free • Thursday, November 8, 7:30a Limestone Cove Unicoi, TN Free • Thursday, November 15, 7:30a This is our last scheduled hike for the season. It will be a short one, and we will enjoy lunch together at the Dutch Treat afterward. During lunch we will recognize individual hiking milestones. Please register early so we can notify the restaurant of our number. This will be a self-directed hike, meaning that there will be no staff leader. Each hiker is responsible for himself/herself.

We are attaching a wellness dimension icon(s) to each of our classes to let you know what wellness dimension that class addresses. See below the icon and its wellness dimension explanation. The Film Club Third Thursday of every month Thursday, November 15, 1-4p • Cost: Free Join Rusty Sheridan, Professor at E.T.S.U. in the Media and Communication department, as he leads a monthly club that views, thinks critically, and discusses a different film each month. Microsoft PowerPoint Series Tuesdays, November 27 & December 4, 11, 17 6-7:30p Cost: $20 for 4 Sessions Instructor: Morgen Marshall The first class, students will learn how to make a presentation and embed a video. In the second class, they will present that PowerPoint to the class. In the third class, students will be shown how prepare an outside document and insert it into PowerPoint and how to insert a table or graph. For the fourth and final class, students will present their finished presentation to the class. The classes are designed to grow in complexity each session, and the “learn by doing” method will be used. Some computer knowledge is necessary. Participants will need to bring a Thumb (USB) drive. Outings A Walk in Their Boots at Tipton Haynes Historic Site Saturday, November 3 Leave MPCC at 10a, return approx. 1p Cost: Free A Walk in their Boots-A salute to the American Soldier is an all era living history event which focuses on the American Soldier through time from the Revolutionary War to the present. Through living history encampments, demonstrations and battle reenactments. During our visit we will see the Opening Ceremony - National Anthem, Weapons Demonstration from the Revolution to Vietnam, and Flag Retirement Ceremony. Please Pre-register.

Milligan Christmas Concert Saturday, December 1 Leave MPCC at 6:45p, return approx. 9:30p Cost: $1 The glorious sounds and sights of the season will be a great start to your Christmas festivities as the Milligan Music Department presents its annual Christmas concert. The performance will feature choirs, orchestra, and the organ in the beautifully decorated Mary B. Martin Auditorium of Seeger Memorial Chapel. The evening will also include a carol sing-along and will conclude with a moving candle-lighting and singing of “Silent Night.” The concert is free, but an offering with a suggested donation of $5 will be taken to benefit the Milligan music program. Register by November 30. U.S.O. Christmas Show at Jonesborough Repertory Theatre Saturday, December 8 Leave MPCC at 1:15p, return approx. 4:30p Cost: $16 Step back into the 1940s with Jonesborough Repertory Theatre’s radio station, WJRT, as the theatre presents the annual 1940s USO Christmas Show. Just as America entered World War II, radio airwaves served as a key source of entertainment and news for families on the home front, as well as entertainment for the troops at home and overseas. The radio cast will be broadcasting live radio skits as well as singing and dancing to many patriotic and familiar Christmas tunes as we honor our military families with this memorable Christmas celebration of our freedom. Travel Corner JCSC Seniors on the Go will not meet in November due to everyone’s busy schedules as we prepare for the start of the holiday season. Mark your calendars and plan to join us on Thursday, December 13 at 3:00 p.m. for a Christmas celebration and slide show from the recent trip to Spain & Portugal. Travelers saw some amazing sights on this tour and can’t wait to share with you! The time is here to plan your 2019 travel adventures. We have some great charter motor coach trips planned, as well as information from some of our local travel providers on trips that may be of interest to you. Destinations by motor coach next year include the Canadian Maritimes, Mackinac Island, New York City, Cape Cod and St. Augustine. We also have information from Collette Tours on tours to Switzerland and the Pasadena Rose Bowl Parade. From Cruise Planners, you can join in on a wonderful cruise to the Greek Isles. Knoxville Tours will offer a Johnson City pickup at Memorial Park Community Center on their upcoming trip for a Country Christmas at the Opryland Hotel as well as a wonderful 2019 Christmas trip to Williamsburg and the Greenbrier. Six (6) sessions going through February 18, 2019. 5:30 – 6:15 pm. Beginner Line Dance, Level 2 is for anyone who has completed the Absolute Beginner line dance class. It is recommended that new dancers start with the absolute beginner class and then follow it with this Level 2 Beginner class,however the class is also available for anyone who knows some of the basics of line dancing and wants to refresh their skills/knowledge. Each session will be 45 minutes. If inclement weather affects the class, it will be extended to make up the days. The 6-week class series is $30, or silver sneaker discount of $20.00. Fitness Focus Introduction to Level 1 Pilates Beginning November 27th Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9:45a Cost: $8 for 8 sessions (4 weeks) Instructor: Lauren Qualls If you are interested in learning the basics of classical Pilates, then this introductory class is for you! Pilates is an exercise system of movements that uses the mind and the body to enhance muscular strength, improve flexibility and overall health and wellness. Pilates movements requires control of your own body to properly execute a few repetitions during exercise. All exercise will be performed on exercise mats so participants are encouraged to bring their own mat to each class. Class size will be limited.
Tai Chi for Arthritis and Fall Prevention Mondays and Wednesdays, 11a Cost will be $5 per class (50% discount for SilverSneakers® eligible participants) Instructor: Tonya Van Hook Tai Chi for Arthritis is an evidence-based, low-impact Tai Chi form modified for seniors. It has been shown to reduce pain and stiffness associated with arthritis while improving strength, range of motion, and balance thereby reducing the risk of falling. Classwork includes gentle stretching, breath work, focus on body alignment, and slow, controlled movement. With adjustments the exercises are appropriate for individuals of all physical conditions and can be done seated in a chair.

Keep It Moving A supervised exercise program for individuals who have finished Cardiac Rehab, Physical Therapy or been told by your physician that you need to exercise but don’t know how. This program serves as the next step in your progression in establishing a safe, independent exercise program. This program requires a referral from a medical professional. This is an ideal program for the individual who is facing total joint replacement both before surgery and after finishing post-surgical physical therapy.
