Dominion Senior Living of Johnson City We welcome every person into our community with open arms to love, learn, and grow with us as a family. The moment Jessie Day walked into Dominion, it was apparent she would fit right in, never leaving us with a dull moment again. Upon her arrival, she quickly adjusted to her new home, spreading her positive energy and contagious smile throughout our community. Jessie’s brothers, Charles and Garnett, are among the 11 other brothers and sisters that cared for her growing up, along with her dog named “Dog.” A couple of months ago, Jessie had a fall that required her to be sent out of the community for quite a while. Our Dominion family and friends turned to God with an outpouring of prayers. Through her strong-willed spirit and urge to return back home, Jessie came back to Dominion with a beautiful smile and a handful of her favorite hard candies and chocolates. We are so glad to have Jessie back at Dominion to continue bringing joy and laughter to us all!

Hip Hikers Mystery Hike Thursday, November 3, 8a Cost: $3 Challenging level, Meet at Center Bring your own lunch Tips for Winter Hiking By Jeff Doran Do you pack your hiking boots away after the first snowflake falls? If so, pull them back out. Winter is a great time to hit the trail for more reason than one: not only are the crowds gone, but many parks show off their true beauty after a fresh snowfall. Zip up your jacket, grab the right snacks, and head to the nearest trailhead. Wear Layers. Though it feels frigid at the trailhead, your body starts to generate heat after just 10 to 15 minutes of walking, especially if you’ve chosen a strenuous trail. Still, layering is important to

staying warm and maintaining a consistent temperature on the hike and at the top of the mountain, where it may be even colder than at the trailhead. When you layer, remember: • A base layer wicks moisture off your body • A fleece jacket is next—this is necessary for insulation and warmth • A shell helps to keep you dry and stops the wind from penetrating your core Layers or no layers, always remember to avoid cotton. Once wet, cotton no longer insulates you from the cold. Moreover, it wicks heat away from your body and puts you at risk for hypothermia. Other important winter hiking apparel includes hat, gloves, extra socks and a scarf.

Meet the Staff Donna Campbell Office Manager Donna Campbell joined the staff of the Senior Center in December, 2004. “On my first day at work, the Senior Center staff served Christmas lunch to a large group of seniors, and then sang We Wish You a Merry Christmas. I knew from that first day that I was in a place where seniors were welcomed and appreciated. In the last twelve years, we’ve seen a lot of changes at the Center, most notably the move to Memorial Park Community Center in 2012. The most enjoyable part of my job is to spend time with seniors and the co-workers who make every day fun. In my role as Office Manager, I supervise the registration desks, assist the Johnson City Senior Center Foundation and Advisory Council, and work with a self-directed volunteer team to plan charter trips. When not at work, I enjoy spending time with my family, especially my four grandchildren, and planning trips with family and friends. My favorite place to visit is Denali National Park. If you don’t see me at the Center for several days, I just might be in Alaska!” Each day as Donna comes to work, she is committed to helping the population that comes here every day. She keeps a smile on her face and care and concern in her heart for all the participants. She is continually thinking up ideas to keep seniors active and engaged. When you see her, tell her how much you appreciate her. Thank you Donna for all you do!

Fitness Tidbits! Problems associated with prolonged sitting The majority of Americans are sedentary. They spend about 60% of the waking day on activities sitting down. That includes sitting while eating, commuting, using a computer, or watching TV. Sitting too much can be bad for your health. Studies show that total sitting time increases the risk of dying from all causes. Sitting especially increases the risk of death from cardiovascular disease and is also linked to obesity, type 2 diabetes and some cancers. Evidence shows that both aerobic and strength exercises help to improve your health and fitness. Getting started: • Take all medicines prescribed by your doctor. • Begin slowly and carefully. • Look for ways to interrupt your sitting. During a 30 minute TV program, there are usually 9-12 minutes of commercials. Stand up and move around the room when they come on. • Find activities to build into your daily life. • Check out the activities offered at • Memorial Park Community Center. • Don’t just sit there, get up and move! • Information from Exercise is Medicine®
