Marosites earns second straight Miss Basketball award Douglas Fritz • Mar 8, 2016 at 9:22 PM dfritz@johnsoncitypress.com 423-722-0551 https://www.facebook.com/dfritzjcpresshttps://twitter.com/fritzblitzzzhttps://www.linkedin.com/ pub/doug-fritz/62/1b6/331 Douglas Fritz Since its inception in 1986, the Miss Basketball award was handed out 87 times through 2014. But not one player from the Tri-Cities area was deemed worthy of the honor. Last year, Elizabethton’s Kayla Marosites broke through the barrier and, somewhat surprisingly, won the Class AA award as a junior. This year, Marosites won it again. The Lady Cyclones’ 5-foot-10 senior guard — and East Tennessee State University signee — was selected during a ceremony Tuesday night at Murphy Center in Murfreesboro. On hand were her teammates, who missed last year’s ceremony because it was held after the state championship game and the Lady Cyclones were eliminated in the semifinals. “It was a little different this year,” said Marosites. “I was sad last year because I wanted to be in the championship game, and my teammates weren’t here. So this time it was a great moment.” Marosites said she could not have won the honor without those teammates. “I couldn’t have done it without all of those practices and hard work, and having a close bond with them,” said Marosites. “It really means a lot.” Lady Cyclones’ head coach Len Dugger said he wasn’t sure what would happen when the announcement was made, but added he felt like the committee got it right. “I was afraid they might look another direction,” said Dugger. “But I’m a little biased, and I think they picked the right one. I understand the work she has put into being the best Class AA player in the state. “It says a lot about her teammates, too, getting her in situations where she could get recognition.” Marosites became just the 16th player in the 31-year history of the award — a total of 93 honorees — to win back-to-back awards. Last season Marosites was very good, but she was even better this season. Helping her team earn a record of 33-0 heading into Thursday’s state quarterfinal contest against Martin Westview, Marosites is averaging 22.4 points, 9.5 rebounds, 2.9 steals, 2.1 assists and 2.6 3-pointers per game.

But perhaps her most impressive statistics is at the free throw line. Marosites has made 151 of 162 attempts for 93.2 percent on the season. She knocked down six of six free throws in the final two minutes of Elizabethton’s hard-fought 48-44 win over Gatlinburg-Pittman in Saturday’s sectional round. Two years ago, Marosites helped the Lady Cyclones earn the Class AA state championship. Last season, she helped Elizabethton win its first 32 games and reach the state semifinals, and the Lady Cyclones have won 85 of their last 86 games. Marosites said her teammates are part of this honor. “Definitely I couldn’t do it without them,” she said. “We have a really unselfish team, and it’s great to be a part of it.” Dugger said Marosites is a special player. “I think every kid I have is very special, but Kayla is the epitome of what hard work will do for you,” said Dugger. The other Class AA finalists were Upperman’s Akira Levy and McMinn Central’s Jacobi Lynn. Here is a list of the two-time winners of the Miss Basketball award: Class AAA Shacobia Barbee, Riverdale, 2011-12 Jasmine Hassell, Wilson Central, 2008-09 Jennifer Wilson, Oak Ridge, 1998-99 Erin McGinnis, Oak Ridge, 1996-97 Conswella Sparrow, Shelbyville, 1994-95 Class AA Kayla Marosites, Elizabethton, 2015-16 Elizabeth Masengil, McMinn Central, 2012-13 Bianca Thomas, Chester County, 2005-06 Andrea Davidson, Jackson County, 2001-02 Misty Greene, Meigs County, 1994-95 Rachael Powell, Meigs County, 1992-93 Amy Fuller, David Lipscomb 1986-87 Class A Jaycee Coe, Jackson County, 2013-14 Meredith Richardson, Bradford 2003-04 Michelle Street, Bradford, 1992-93 Mia Daniel, Collinwood 1988-89
