JCSC Foundation News April is DEERSLAYER month! You’ve heard about this new obstacle course race for months; now join in the excitement at the Deerslayer inaugural run on Saturday, April 16 at Winged Deer Park. Many of you contributed to the annual Christmas Box project last December, helping the Foundation to provide Christmas boxes to 136 needy seniors. The committee for this year’s project is forming now; the first meeting will be Tuesday, April 19 at Noon at Memorial Park Community Center. If you would like to participate in the planning and promotion for the 2016 Christmas box project, you are invited to attend the meeting. You do not have to be a Foundation Board member in order to serve on the committee.

Preventing Dehydration

It is a lot easier to stay hydrated than to reverse dehydration, because if you are sweating heavily and become dehydrated, you may be losing water faster than your body can absorb the liquid you drink. In order to prevent dehydration, which can cause life-threatening shock in severe cases, it is vital to replenish both the water and the electrolytes (salts) that your body loses through sweat.

Carry two to four quarts of water when hiking and sip it throughout the day.

Be sure urine is “clear and copious,” an important indicator of good hydration.

Eat salty snacks too (or sip sports drinks) to replenish your body’s lost electrolytes.

Pay attention to environmental conditions and try to avoid direct sun. In very hot weather, hikers typically lose around one half to one quart of fluid per hour, according to Grand Canyon National Park Hike Smart guidelines.

Watch babies, small children, and older adults closely for signs of a dry mouth, reduced urine output, and dark yellow urine, as they are at a higher risk for dehydration.

Treat water that you get from wilderness sources; serious illnesses can be contracted from untreated water.

Avoid caffeinated beverages, soft drinks, and alcohol; these drinks sap your body’s fluids.

Neyland Stadium and UT Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame Tour

For the Washington DC trip in November, we are working with Congressman Phil Roe’s office to schedule a tour of the Capitol Building. A White House visit would require an advance security screening for every person and tours are limited; we’ll have more details about a possible White House tour as we get closer to the travel date. The DC trip offers some other great attractions, including a trolley tour at Arlington National Cemetery and an afternoon at the Smithsonian, as well as an evening memorial and monuments tour. Sports Coordinator for Senior Sports How active do you want to be? If you feel you are too sedentary and want to get up and go more, then Memorial Park Community Center/Johnson City Senior Center might just have the person you have been looking for. Mike Woods is the person you will want to speak with.

Whether you are looking for indoor sports such as table tennis, pickleball, or basketball or maybe you’re looking for something to do outdoors, Mike will get you connected. Mike’s is knowledgeable about each of these

activities and he has a great passion for keeping seniors active, especially in the outdoors where they can soak up some vitamin D. He loves to share his experience of over 40 plus years in the outdoors fishing, hunting, canoeing, hiking and biking (he has over 25,000 miles on his bike) with anyone with a kindred spirit. His hiking group that he oversees, the hip hikers, won the “Positive Images in Aging” award for the Southeastern Association of Areas on Aging in 2015. These are not the only sports that you can enjoy at the center.

Recipe Corner We have many good cooks that come to the Senior Center and this recipe was given by F.K. She said,” Our family is Polish. My mother-inlaw gave me all my Polish recipes. Serve with mashed potatoes and rye bread” If you would like to submit a recipe to share with others please contact Patty at 434-6235 Polish Cabbage Rolls Cabbage leaves-7-8 1 pound ground meat (can be half pork) 1 large onion chopped 1 cup cooked rice (white or brown) Salt and pepper 1 large can tomato sauce 3-4 peeled carrots Several celery stalks Soften cabbage leaves in boiling water 1-2 minutes. Mix together onion, meat, rice and salt and pepper. Roll mound of meat up in leaf Place rolls in large pan or pot. Cover with a can tomato sauce and can of water. Put carrots and celery in pot. Simmer cabbage rolls in sauce/ water for at least 1 hour *To make this recipe with lower calories and salt, you can use ground turkey and low sodium sauce. You could serve mashed cauliflower instead of potatoes.

Page 7 April is National Donate Life Month Right now someone is hearing the scariest news: Cancer, heart disease, liver failure, diabetes, dialysis, COPD. All are scary diagnoses and can be life ending if someone does not donate. You can help by talking with your family about your wishes for being a donor, signing your driver’s license or donor card, and registering to be a donor.

In the state of Tennessee there are 2,077 people who need lifesaving organ transplants and thousands more who need tissue transplants to enhance their quality of life.

During the last five years 621 Tennesseans died waiting for a lifesaving transplant.

These are staggering statistics. Tennessee has a program in place where you can easily register to be a donor at any Driver License Center or with Donate Life Tennessee at www.tndonorregistery.org Facts about Organ Donation: • 22 people die a day waiting for a transplant.

• 1 organ donor can save 8 lives and change the lives of 50 more people.

• Almost anyone can be an organ donor, regardless of age or medical history.

• All major religions in U.S. support organ donation.

• Donors can still have open caskets funerals, and organ donation does not cost the family any money.

• If the person is hospitalized, the medical staff provides the best possible care, regardless of organ donor status. In fact, the transplant team and medical team are completely separate from each other.

Donation is only considered after a patient is deceased.

• Donors are needed for all races and ethnic groups. Transplant success rates increase when organs are matched between members of same ethnic background • One person can make a difference in someone`s life who is waiting for a transplant. You are giving the gift of life! It could be your neighbor, a family member or a complete stranger. Would you please consider this valuable gift to someone?

Watch the Disney movie, Brave, and enjoy light refreshments. Special guests will be on hand to do makeup and hair for all our fairy princesses! This event is for mothers, grandmothers, or guardians to enjoy a day with their daughters and spoil them like the little princesses that they are!

Tickets can be purchased at the center in advance to avoid waiting in line starting April 1st.

Family Campout Location: Memorial Park Community Center Registration: April 18 (Pre-Registration Required) Date: May 20 Ages: All Cost: $15/family Spend time with your family enjoying a night camping outdoors at Memorial Park Community Center! Games and family entertainment will be provided.

Dinner included. Activities will include tent decorating, family flag designing, s’mores, and lots of

family fun. This is a great way to celebrate the beginning of summer and create a family tradition and memory that will last a lifetime.

Tents will not be provided.

Pre-registration is required beginning April 18th.

Dance & Special Events Absolute Beginner Line Dance (Level 1)

Instructor: Martha Davenport Thursdays, March 31-April 28 5:30-7p • Cost: $30 Must pre-register. The Absolute beginner class is recommended for anyone who has never line danced before – The class starts with the very basic steps, learning the terminology and sequence of steps.

This class will be followed by “beginner line dance, level 2” during May. It is recommended that new dancers start with the absolute beginner class and then follow it with beginner class - then they would be ready to move on to other classes/levels of dances. Dominion Senior Living of Johnson City Missing Puzzle Piece

Edith Bowman and Skyla Rafuls met a few years ago at an assisted living facility. Edith was a resident and Skyla worked as an activities assistant. They each has a passion for puzzles, which lead to an inseparable bond. When Dominion Senior Living opened, Skyla found greater opportunities for employment leading her to join the team as a resident’s assistant. Upon this transition, Edith lost her puzzle partner. A few months later, Edith’s family came to Dominion Senior Living of Johnson City to visit an old friend, Deane Miller. Deane expressed her happiness since the move which influenced Edith into moving to Dominion as well. When Skyla heard her “Mother Bowman” was moving in, she was overjoyed! The two quickly reconnected and still continue to bond over building puzzles together.

Functional Fitness Fridays Fridays, April 8, 15, 22, 29, 8:30a • Cost: $2 Instructor: Deb Fogle What is functional fitness? Exercises designed to train and develop your muscles to make it easier and safer to perform everyday activities. This class will concentrate on stability and strength using various exercise tools such as fitness balls, kettle bells and weights. This class is geared for the person who has some exercise experience.

Keep It Moving A supervised exercise program for individuals who have finished Cardiac Rehab, Physical Therapy or been told by your physician that you need to exercise but don’t know how. This program serves as the next step in your progression in establishing a safe, independent exercise program.

This program requires a referral from a medical professional. This is an ideal program for the individual who is facing total joint replacement both before surgery and after finishing postsurgical physical therapy. Please contact Deb Fogle at 434-6231 for more information.

Fitness Tidbits!

Exercise Intensity

I’m often asked this question, how hard should one exercise? Key is to listen to your body. You are the best judge of how hard you should exercise. Start out slowly and build on your physical activity. The recommendation from the American College of Sports Medicine is to exercise at a moderate-intensity for 150 minutes per week. One way to determine exercise intensity is to use the talk test. If you cannot talk comfortably while you are exercising, then you are probably working at an intense level. If you are just beginning an exercise routine, start off with light to moderate intense activities and then build up. You can also use the Borg Scale. The scale goes from least effort to maximum effort as follows: 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 20

You should be working between the levels of 11-13 when exercising. Always remember to check with your physician before starting an exercise program.
