JCSC Foundation News The Foundation Board would like to extend a huge THANK YOU to the many participants, City employees and community members who contributed to the Christmas Box project. Because of your generosity, the Foundation was able to more than double its outreach this year from 64 to 133 deserving seniors in our community. In addition, general support from the annual appeal drive increased. This will allow the Foundation to continue to support its other ongoing projects, including the fellowship program to allow low-income seniors to participate in activities at the Memorial Park Community Center/ Senior Center; the partnership with MSHA Foundation and Senior Services that provides the services of the Community Health Activities Coordinator; and financial support for the many diverse programs offered for seniors. None of this would happen without your generous giving – we are thankful and humbled by your support!

Travel Corner
Make your travel plans early this year! Our spring Maine trip is already full, and the fall motor coach trips to Washington, DC and New York City are expected to sell out. If you’re planning to fly away during the cold weather months, save money and don’t be encumbered with heavy bags by only taking your carry-on! Here’s some travel tips:
Kingsport Carousel
1. Limit yourself to two pairs of shoes and two pairs of pants, and wear the heavier items on the plane. 2. Don’t pack more than a week’s worth of clothes. For longer trips, plan to do laundry along the way. Powder laundry packs and dry-clean sheets that work in the dryer pack easily and make laundry in the hotel easy. 3. Pack only garments that can be colorcoordinated with everything else in your travel wardrobe. If it doesn’t work in multiple outfits, leave it at home. 4. Every little bit of space helps. Clean all those old grocery store receipts out of your wallet, swap your pile of paperbacks for an e-reader and forget about those “just in case” items you could easily buy in your destination. Check your hotel to see what items are provided. 5. Many travelers swear by
compression bags (also known as Space Bags) to help save precious space -- but keep in mind that they won’t help you stay within airline weight limits. 6. Maximize your personal item. In addition to a carry-on bag, airlines allow you to bring a personal item such as a purse or laptop bag. A small backpack, which can hold a lot more than a purse, will still fit easily under the seat, and leaves your hands free in the airport. (If a purse is needed during the trip, it can be folded up inside a larger bag.)

All five screenings take 60-90 minutes to complete. No appointments are being made through the Senior Center. Millions of people age 65 and older fall each year—one out of three in this age range. Falls are the leading cause of both fatal and nonfatal injuries among older adults, causing severe injuries such as hip fractures, head trauma, and death. Every 13 seconds an older adult is seen in an emergency department (ED) for a fall. In 2013, about 25,500 older adults died from unintentional fall injuries, 2.5 million were treated in emergency departments for nonfatal falls, and more than 734,000 were hospitalized. Older adults are hospitalized for fall-related injuries five times more often than for injuries from other causes.
Falls significantly affect independence: •
•
•
•
Among people who fall, 20 to 30% suffer moderate to severe injuries such as lacerations, hip fractures, and head traumas.6,7 These injuries can make it difficult to get around or live independently, and they increase the risk of early death. From 2006 to 2010, falls were the leading cause of traumatic brain injury (TBI), accounting for 40% of all TBIs in the United States that resulted in an ED visit, hospitalization, or death. More than two-thirds (81%) of TBIs in adults aged 65 and older are caused by falls. Many people who fall, even if they are not injured, develop a fear of falling. This fear may cause them to limit their activities, which leads to reduced mobility and loss of physical fitness, and in turn increases their actual risk of falling. People age 75 and older who fall are four to five times more likely than those age 65 to 74 to be admitted to a long-term care facility for a year or longer.

Making a difference in the lives of those we serve. Johnson City’s newest Assisted Living and Memory Care community, Dominion Senior Living welcomes new residents to join our family. In December Deane Miller joined our family when she moved in. She loves her new home and was kind enough to share with us a beautiful poem written by her mother, Alberta Morris, which she has kept dear to her heart. Dominion Senior Living invites you to be part of our love stories by visiting our community or DominionJohnsonCity.com.
So many disappointments day by day So many things perplex us on the way So many cares and trials we must meet So many little things among the sweet So many things we do not understand So many are not as we would have planned So many days of suffering and pain So many hours of labor spent in vein So many sorrows coming one by one So many blessings coming from above So many tidings of our Father’s Love So many faithful friends about our way So many sweet surprises day by day So many answers to our bible prayers So many tokens of our Fathers care So many promises to help and cheer So many of a Savior ever near So many blessings all along the way Help us, Oh Lord To praise thee every single day Help us, Oh Lord To say they will be done By: Alberta Morris
