July 2016
JCSC Foundation News The Johnson City Senior Center Foundation is hard at work! Planning has already begun for the two big projects sponsored by the Foundation: Christmas Boxes and Deerslayer OCR 2017. If you would like to participate in the planning for either event as a Committee member, contact Donna Campbell at 434-6230. Committee members are currently working to recruit sponsors. Many different sponsorship opportunities are available to individuals and businesses. Will you consider helping the Foundation in their endeavors to enrich the lives of senior adults in our community? You may have received a letter in the mail recently from the Johnson City Senior Center Foundation. The Foundation sends out two appeal letters per year seeking financial support for the different projects supported by the Foundation through the Johnson City Senior Center. If you have already sent your donation, thank you! Last year, the Foundation provided financial support for a partnership with Mountain States Foundation to continue the services of the Community Health Activities Coordinator to provide free health information and screenings for seniors; provided matching funds for an ABC grant from the Tennessee Arts Commission; funded fellowships to provide opportunities for low-income seniors to participate in activities at the Senior Center at greatly reduced fees; provided charter buses for day trips; and supplied 136 Christmas boxes to homebound elderly in our local community! With your support, the Foundation can continue these projects as well as additional support to the Senior Center.
Modern Woodmen recently presented a check to the JCSC Foundation for $2,500.00 as a sponsor of the Deerslayer OCR! Left to Right: Frank Calderala, Roger Espinoza (Modern Woodmen representative), Jim Hunter, Rebecca Hennessee and Jimmy Pierce.
On behalf of the members of the Johnson City Senior Center Foundation, we wish you a safe and happy July 4th – enjoy your summer!
Please call 434-5723, 48 hours in advance to reserve a meal or if you need to cancel a meal that you have already signed up for. Sign up sheets are also available outside of the dining room.

Ten reasons to use trekking poles when you hike 1. Trekking poles, like ski poles, allow your arms to help propel you forward and upward. 2. Poles reduce the impact on your legs, knees, ankles, and feet. This is especially true when going downhill. A 1999 study in The Journal of Sports Medicine found that trekking poles can reduce compressive force on the knees by up to 25 percent. 3. Trekking poles can be used to deflect backcountry nuisances. 4. Walking with poles can help you establish and maintain a consistent rhythm, which can increase your speed. 5. The extra two points of contact significantly increase your traction on slippery surfaces like mud, snow, and loose rock. 6. Poles help you maintain balance in difficult terrain such as during river crossings, on tree root-strewn trails, and on slippery bog bridges. 7. Poles can act as a probe to give you more information than you can get with your eyes. 8. They can help to defend against attacks from dogs, bears and other wildlife. Swing them overhead to make yourself look bigger or throw them like a spear. 9. Trekking poles help to alleviate some of the weight you carry. 10. Trekking poles can be used for things other than trekking. Poles can also double as a medical splint and can serve as ultralight packrafting paddles. (Information from Outdoor Gear Lab)
Meet the Staff JR Harrell
Recreation Worker JR Harrell has recently joined the team at the Johnson City Senior Center and has been a great asset! We are thankful to have him on board. He is willing to assist in any way, but his main areas of focus are scheduling lifelong learning events that will be beneficial to our seniors, computer classes and games. He is also responsible for keeping us all “on our toes” with what is happening in each room as he creates and places the room schedules outside each door every day. He has assisted in many ways to help make things more efficient and run smoothly at the center. He enjoys life by spending time with his wife and two dogs. He also likes going to concerts and music related events, traveling and just spending time with friends. The next time you are at the center, look him up, he would like to meet you and find out what your interests are so that he can serve you better.

Travel Corner
The staff would like to thank those who took the time to complete an evaluation form for the recent trip to Maine. While some of you gave us some suggestions for improvement, which will be reviewed by both the travel team and Diamond Tours, overall the trip was a good experience. When JCSC Seniors on the Go was organized in 2008, the main purpose of the group was to provide affordable senior trips and create new friendships among the seniors. Our favorite comments from some of the recent travelers were: • “Friendliest bunch of people we had ever traveled with; made a bunch of new friends.” • “I enjoyed the friends we made especially. I have gone on several bus trips and have never had a more congenial group.” • “I loved the trip and am looking forward to the next one.” • “It was an easy going & nice group to get to know people, and I also enjoyed the games on the bus.” Thank you to those who travel with us, and to the travel volunteers who work so diligently to help plan trips, organize activities for the bus, and assist on the motor coach trips. We LOVE travel, and invite all of the participants at the Senior Center to engage in “Active Life through Active Living” by exploring new places and making new friends with JCSC Seniors on the Go.
FIT to Go will not meet in July and August. Watch for the announcement for the September meeting.

Lose Weight & Get Fit With Table Tennis! Health Benefits Of Table Tennis Worldwide millions of people play table tennis, and with good reason. It is entertaining, fun, fast and has great health benefits as well. Because of the low risk of injury table tennis can be enjoyed by people of all ages and fitness levels. When played regularly it improves reflexes, hand-eye coordination and balance, while toning and strengthening the core muscles, upper and lower body. It’s great for working up a sweat and increasing your heart rate, thus helping to keep your heart strong and healthy. Not only is it a good cardiovascular exercise, it is also a great aerobic workout. When running about the table your heart rate increases and your body’s requirement for oxygen becomes much higher, therefore you breath heavier, faster and deeper, which increases lung capacity in addition to how efficiently your lungs use oxygen. As well as being a fantastic physical work out, table tennis is also a great mental work out. You have to plan strategies and decide what spin to put on the ball, whilst trying to stay one step ahead of your opponent and react to the shots they are playing all at the same time. Decisions have to be made in split seconds, this increases concentration levels, short term memory and decision making ability. All this mental exercise boosts hormone levels and keeps the brain young, which can slow the progress of cognitive decline that occurs with ageing. It is also a sport that is good for social bonding, with its friendly but competitive nature, it can be enjoyed at your local club where you can meet with new
people and form lasting friendships. It can also be played at home as a great way to spend more quality time together and bring the family closer. Renowned physician, psychiatrist and brain imaging expert, Dr Daniel Amen, says that ‘Table Tennis is The World’s Best Brain Sport!

Heat Stroke
nausea, dizziness, weakness; and irritability
People it is hot outside! Summer temperatures can soar to the 90`s, making working outside in your yard a real chore. And having heat cramps, heat exhaustion or heat stroke is a real possibility. What are the differences between these three illnesses?
Treatment includes: removing or loosen tight clothing and apply cool, wet clothes or towels to the skin. Fan the person. If the person is conscious, give small amounts of cool water. Move the person to a cooler place. Make sure the person drinks slowly. Watch for changes in condition. If the person refuses water, vomits or begins to lose consciousness, Call 9-1-1 immediately.
Heat cramps are muscular pains and spasms that usually occur in the legs or abdomen caused by exposure to high heat and humidity and loss of fluids and electrolytes. Heat cramps are often an early sign that the body is having trouble with the heat. Heat exhaustion is the body`s response to excessive loss of water and salt, usually through excessive sweating while working or playing outside. You are more prone to heat exhaustion if you are elderly and have high blood pressure. Heat stroke is the most serious heat related illness. It occurs when the body can no longer control its temperature: the body temperature rapidly raises, the sweating mechanism fails. And the body is unable to cool itself down. When heat stroke occurs, the body temperature can rise to 106 degrees or higher within 15 minutes. Heat stroke can cause death or permanent disability if emergency treatment is not given. Signs of heat cramps include: Muscle cramps, pain, spasms in the abdomen, arms, or legs Treatment includes: Drink water and have a snack and/ or carbohydrateelectrolyte drink every 15 to 20 minutes. Avoid salt tablets. Get medical help if person has heart problems, is on a low sodium diet, or if cramps do not subside within 1 hour Signs of heat exhaustion include: Cool, moist, pale or flushed skin, heavy sweating, headache,
Signs of heat stroke include: Confusion, altered mental status, slurred speech, Loss of consciousness, hot dry skin or profuse sweating, Seizures, very high body temperature and is fatal if treatment delayed. Treatment includes: Call 9-1-1 immediately Move the victim to a shady cool area and remove outer clothing, apply cold compresses to wrists, ankles, groin and neck, if awake give sips of cool water. The main thing is to bring temperature down. Watch for any changes in the person`s mental status. Stay with person until help arrives. Do not let your summertime activities be ruined by having a heat related illness. Drink plenty of water during physical activity Do your mowing in the cool of the day, rest often and stay hydrated. Have a happy, healthy fun filled summer!

Fitness Tidbits! Dehydration and Aging Water serves a vital role in the everyday operation of cells within the body. The maintenance of water balance is essential for health and is determined by a sophisticated scheme that balances water input (drinking) and water output (perspiration, urine) from the body. Specific mechanisms interact to control thirst, drinking behavior, and the output water from the kidney when the body is faced with a water deficit. However, restoring body water balance following dehydration ultimately depends on mechanisms that regulate fluid intake or drinking. Despite these sophisticated defense mechanisms, the restoration of water balance following dehydration is usually slow and incomplete; a problem termed “involuntary dehydration.” Thus, even healthy young adults should be advised of the benefits of complete water replacement following dehydration. More importantly, it has become increasingly clear that the ability to regulate fluid balance in response to fluid deprivation or dehydration is compromised in older individuals. Decreased ability to regulate water balance can adversely affect the aging population, leading to increased risk of dysfunction, morbidity, or mortality. In addition, these problems in body fluid regulation are often exacerbated by the presence of other chronic diseases associated with aging, such as hypertension or cerebrovascular disease. As such, the aging population is considered at greater risk for developing dehydration and any associated complication. Make sure you are drinking plenty of water, especially now as summer is here!
