Hiking 101*
Pink Beds, Pisgah National Forest - Asheville, NC Thursday, June 7, 7:30a • Cost: Free Lucky for us, George Vanderbilt’s founding Forest Managers had the foresight to set this boggy wetland habitat aside for public use and preservation in the late 1800’s. As we walk in the footsteps of past conservationist through the “The Cradle of Forestry in America”, we won’t see the original namesake’s abundant pink wildflowers due to reforestation, but we may see the beginning of Rhododendron season budding out and we are sure to see some Mountain Laurel hanging around. From ponds, to bogs, to waterfalls, this 5.1 mile loop has it all! Trail rated Easy to Moderate with little elevation change; pack a trail lunch; carpooling from MPCC; returning by 3:00p.
Big Cedar Creek Trail, Pinnacle Area Natural Preserve Honaker, VA Free Tuesday, June 5, 7:30a Back to the geological wonder that is South VA! Trek on ancient sea beds of limestone and dolomite and learn about the murky natural history of the foraminiferans that are responsible for the abundance of oceanic carbonate rock. This area provides a one of a kind ecosystem for four different natural communities, fourteen rare plant & animal species and a plethora of freshwater species. From the confluence of the Mighty Clinch to the towering Pinnacle, you don’t want to miss a step on this 3.7 mile in and out hike! Trail rated Easy with Moderate sections with some elevation gain; pack a trail lunch; carpooling from MPCC; returning by 3:00p.
AT @ Carvers Gap to Grassy Ridge, Cherokee National Forest Roan Mountain, NC Thursday, June 21, 7:30a • Cost: Free There’s only one place to be when it comes to summit views and the Appalachian June wildflower explosion…Roan Mountain! Beginning at Carvers Gap, we will hop on the AT and follow the famous foot path through an exuberant amount of bursting rhododendron blossoms, keeping our eyes peeled for the stunningly unique Flame Azaleas. After reaching Grassy Ridge and stopping for lunch to take in the 360* pano view, we will head back to complete the 4.7 mile round trip. Trail rated Moderate, with some elevation gain; pack a trail lunch, carpooling from MPCC; returning by 3:00p. Little Lost Cove Cliffs, Pisgah National Forest - Pineola, NC Thursday, June 28, 7:30a • Cost: Free Meandering through a wooded forest and abandoned apple orchard, we will hike our way towards two sets of eponymous rock outcroppings that rise high above the Wilson Creek watershed with spectacular views of Grandmother & Grandfather Mountain and the surrounding Blue Ridge peaks. This area is epic for climbing nuts so keep your eyes peeled for some “rock’in” entertainment! Though this hike is only 1.8 miles from point to point (we will shuttle), there is a hefty climb and gain in elevation for the first 0.5 miles. After returning to the vehicles, there is another trail option for those who want to log a few more miles. Trail rated Moderate w/ Difficult sections and some strenuous elevation gain in sections; pack a trail lunch; carpooling from MPCC; returning by 3:00p.
Walkers and Talkers* Rhododendron Gardens & the Dave Miller Farmstead Roan Mountain, TN & NC Border Wednesday, June 13, 8:30a • Cost: Free This is a blossom-bursting extravaganza that cannot be missed! The Rhododendron Gardens atop Roan Mountain are worldly renowned for their clustered quantities of wild, native Rhododendron, Flame Azalea, and Mountain Laurel that bloom with an explosion of color during the mid-weeks of June. Once we have reached sensory overload from the spectacular flora showing, we will head down to the Dave Miller Farmstead and meet with one of the State Park’s Naturalist to learn what life was like in Appalachia from the early 1800’s, including the land’s transition periods’ up to 1960. Walking up to 3 Easy miles; $3/per vehicle fee to enter the Rhododendron Garden area, please bring cash to help out the drivers with the entry fee and gas reimbursement; pack a sack lunch; carpooling from MPCC; returning by 2:30p.
Clark Creek Waterfall Walkabout, Cherokee National Forest Erwin, TN Free Tuesday, June 19, 7:30a From the heroic history of local Abolitionist and mining company, to the tumbling waters of Sill Branch, Pine Ridge & Longarm Branch Falls, Clark Creek Recreation Area offers a days’ worth of exploration! We might even see an Old Growth Giant or two that escaped the 1920’s sawblade. As will hike around 3 miles through lush, rainforest-like riparian floors, we will cross the creek a few times giving us the chance to cool off a look for the ever present but elusive salamanders that thrive in the area. Trails are rated Easy to Moderate with some short (but steep) elevation gain to approach falls; pack a trail lunch; carpooling from MPCC; returning by 2:00p.
*Preparation is the key to success! Remember to use your Hiking
Checklist to pack for each trip. If you do not have a checklist, please contact the front desk to receive one.
