Hiking 101*
Margarette Falls, Cherokee National Forest Cost: Free Thursday, May 10, 7:30a This local favorite has been famous in the Greenville area for many years, made popular by the massive logging industry that neighbored the falls during the 1920’s. But, just like a beach with grains of sand, the same waterfall looks different every time you revisit it! Grab the camera and join us on a 2.7 mile, picturesque hike through and over a rocky gorged terrain and up to the falls for lunch and back. Trail rated Moderate, carpooling from MCPP; returning by 2:00p.
Guest River Gorge Trail Cost: Free Tuesday, May 8, 7:30a Flowing through the Jefferson National Forest, the Guest River carves out 300 million-year-old sandstone cliffs that plunge 400 feet to pristine water below to create the deep gorge that we will be trekking through. As we hike 2 to 3 miles into the trail and back out, we will see firsthand how water and erosion shaped the southwest Virginia landscape. Pack a trail lunch to enjoy by the river rapids. Trail rated Easy, carpooling from MCPP; depart promptly at 8:00a; returning by 2:00p.
Cleveland Barrens Natural Preserve Area Cost: Free Thursday, May 17, 7:30a Hidden within the Clinch River Valley, lies one of the top six biodiversity hotspots in the nation. The four unique dolomite barrens scatter on the slopes surrounded by forest canopy, allowing a very specific ecosystem for thirteen rare plant species and three rare insects. There are 3 miles of hiking trails within the preserve and we won’t skip a step as we explore this extraordinary wonder. Bring a lunch to eat on trial; spaces are limited for this trip due to management restrictions on visitation. Trails are not rated, but will be scouted; carpooling from MCPP; leaving PROMPTLY by 7:30a, not 8:00a; returning by 2:00p. Buffalo Mountain Wildflower Hike Cost: Free Thursday, May 31, 7:30a After the fire in 2008, the Mountain Laurel rose out of the disturbed, primed soil like a phoenix to take back the slopes of Buffalo Mountain. This happens to be one of the most spectacular viewing spots for this type of laurel and its right out our back door. If the timing is just right, we will see a plethora of Pink Lady Slippers and the beginning of the rhododendron blossoms. Pack a trail lunch, we will exert some energy trekking 2.5 to 4 miles up & around White Rock Loop and back down either Fork Knob or Hartsell Hollow Trails. Trail rated Moderate, carpooling from MCPP; returning by 1:30p.
Walkers and Talkers* David Crockett Birthplace State Park- Memorial Day Event Cost: $1 Friday, May 25, 8:30a Step back in time and lend your own hand at raising an 18th Century barn! First, we will take a short walk on 1.1 miles of walking trails around the homestead site and to the bluffs of the Nolichucky River. By the time we get back, the work will have begun! Learn what it was like when David Crockett’s parents first settled this area in late 1700’s. There will be a lot of different period demonstrations going on, including the barn raising, by local reenactors and park staff, along with an authentic 18th Century trade show of replicated artifacts of the times, items available to the public as well! Trails rated Easy; taking bus from MCPP; depart promptly at 8:30a; returning by 1:30p.
Moore Cove Falls & Looking Glass Falls Cost: Free Tuesday, May 22, 7:30a Welcome to the “Land of Waterfalls”… seriously! Our first waterfall will be a quick stop at the plunging Looking Glass Falls on the way to the trailhead of showery Moore Cove Falls in the Pisgah National Forest. While we tread through fern-filled woods, jack-in-the-pulpit and trillium will guide our way on this1.2 mile in and out hike. If 1.2 miles doesn’t scratch your hiking itch for the day, I will have another short hike planned in the area for after lunch (on the trail). Trail rated Easy, carpooling from MCPP; depart promptly at 8:00a; returning by 3:00p.
*Preparation is the key to success! Remember to use your Hiking
Checklist to pack for each trip. If you do not have a checklist, please contact the front desk to receive one.
