May is Stroke Awareness Month
If you think or someone you love might be having a stroke, what is a simple way to check them and take brain and lifesaving action? Use this simple acronym: F.A.S.T Check for the following signs: FACE DROOPING Does one side of the face droop or is it numb? Ask the person to smile. Is the person’s smile uneven or lopsided? ARM WEAKNESS Is one arm weak or numb? Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward? SPEECH DIFFICULTY Is speech slurred? Is the person unable to speak or hard to understand? Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence, like “The sky is blue.” Is the person able to correctly repeat the words? TIME TO CALL 9-1-1 If someone shows any of these symptoms, even if the symptoms go away, call 9-1-1 and say, “I think this is a stroke” to help get the person to the hospital immediately. Time is important! Don’t delay, and also note the time when the first symptoms appeared. Emergency responders will want to know. Sometimes other symptoms appear, separately, in combination or with F.A.S.T. signs. Check for these signs below: • • • • •
Having sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding speech. Having sudden numbness or weakness of face, arm or leg. Especially on one side of the body. Having sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes. Having sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination. Having sudden severe headache with no known cause.
If someone shows any of these symptoms, call 9-1-1 or emergency medical services immediately. The quicker emergency help can come the better the outcome will be. Do not drive yourself or loved one to the hospital. Know the signs of a stroke and get help as FAST as you can.

Fitness Tidbit! Move More!
“Exercise improves your health.” You hear it all the time, but what does that really mean? How much of a difference can exercise make in your life, and how much do you really need to do? You’ll be happy to know that you don’t need to spend countless hours in the gym to achieve the heart-health benefits of getting active. There are easy ways to add this type of activity to your daily routine: • • • • • • •
• • •
Park the car farther away from your destination. Get on or off the bus several blocks away. Take the stairs instead of the elevator or escalator. Take fitness breaks instead of cigarette or coffee breaks. Walk, stretch or do some office exercises. Perform gardening, yard work, heavy house cleaning, or home-repair activities. Avoid labor-saving devices; turn off the self-propel option on your lawn mower or vacuum cleaner, and hide all of your TV remotes. Exercise while watching TV. For example, use hand weights, a stationary bike or treadmill, stretch, or perform body-weight exercises such as crunches, push ups and squats. Keep a pair of comfortable walking or running shoes in your car and office. You’ll be ready for activity wherever you go! Walk while doing errands. The good news is that it’s never too late to start an active lifestyle. No matter how old you are, how unfit you feel, or how long you’ve been inactive, research shows that starting a more active lifestyle now—through consistent, moderateintensity activity—can make you healthier and improve your quality of life.

Dominion Senior Living of Johnson City This past month we had the opportunity to welcome San Francisco 49ers Daniel Kilgore, to have lunch at Dominion Senior Living. He was able to socialize with the residents, reminisce on their past hobbies, and share his story with everyone. Concluding their meal, Ray and Ralph invited Daniel to show him a hobby very special to them, their paintings. It was an honor for Daniel to see Ray and Ralph’s paintings, and for them to share something they are so proud of. Everyone has something important to share whether it is a story, a personal item, or a hobby. We have the privilege every day to stop what we are doing and take a little time to listen, and that is such a blessing!
