“Chased by the Wolf” with Jill and Fred Sauceman Tuesday, September 25 10:30a Cost: Free Join Jill and Fred Sauceman as the talk about their new book “Chased by the Wolf: A Life with Lupus and the Kidney Transplant That Saved It” In the summer of 1974, Jill Sauceman was ready to begin the nursing program at East Tennessee State University. During her college physical, at a small medical clinic in Nickelsville, Virginia, her doctor noticed something out of the ordinary. Suddenly, Jill’s future plans were put on hold, when he discovered that her kidneys were not functioning properly. He diagnosed her with lupus nephritis, a disease she had never heard of before. Instead of preparing for college, she was made acutely aware of her own mortality at a young age. She was told that within ten to fifteen years of the diagnosis, she would be on dialysis or would require a kidney transplant. She fought through total hip replacements and debilitating flare-ups of lupus and managed to save her increasingly weakened kidneys until 2014, when she received a lifesaving kidney transplant from an anonymous donor at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville. At the time, her kidney function had deteriorated to less than seven percent. All proceeds from CHASED BY THE WOLF will benefit the renal transplant program at Vanderbilt. Please Pre-register. Join us on Thursday, September 20 at 3:00p for the monthly JCSC Seniors on the Go travel meeting. The time is getting closer for the annual Let’s Go Travel Show! Mark your calendars now and plan to attend on Tuesday, October 16 from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. We’ll have entertainment, snacks, door prizes, and information on some great trips! Hope to see you there! Some tips for packing: •
Make a list!! A packing list ensures that you don’t forget those important items (medications, change for tips or snack machines, charging cords for your phone, ear plugs, etc.)
•
If you’re traveling for several days pack wash and wear clothing. Many items can be washed in the sink and hung up to dry. Laundry services or coin laundries are often available at hotels. Packing lightly can be done successfully!
•
Put socks and underwear in resealable bags and stuff inside shoes to save space.
•
Save empty travel-size bottles and refill with your favorite shampoos, soaps and lotions.
•
Pack a few extra resealable storage bags to store damp or dirty clothing, dirty shoes or other items you want to keep separate in your bag.
•
Don’t forget a rain jacket and light sweater – even in hot climates, indoor venues can be freezing cold!

Sports Joe Carder, a participant at the Johnson City Senior Center, recently competed in the Transplant Games of America and brought home the GOLD! Competing in three events, Table Tennis, Darts and Cornhole, he stood out when winning his matches and bringing home the top prize. He will continue to train in table tennis and darts. He wishes to compete again in the 2020 games. This journey began back in 2001 when he was diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver caused from a side effect of a medicine prescribed for a heart arrhythmia. Placed on the donor list with UNOS (United Network Organ Sharing) in 2014, his health continued to decline. He received a liver transplant in July of2014. All went well and he has had very few complications. He is very appreciative of Tennessee Donor Services, an organ procurement organization, for the work that they do to promote and inform people of the needs that are out there and of the opportunities that people have to donate organs. Over 90% of the population believe in organ
Page 9 donation, however, only 54% nationwide have actually signed up to be an organ donor. Donate Life Tennessee wants to change this. There are over 115,000 people on the transplant list for various organs (mostly kidneys) and approximately 20 people on the waiting list die each day. Feeling well again has made Joe realize how fortunate he is in receiving this “Gift” of life. He is a spokesperson for Donate Life and is always willing to share his story. Joe is not taking life for granted; he is taking it by storm. He comes to the center 3 days a week to play table tennis and utilizes the fitness room. He participated in a Cornhole 101 program and fell in love with the activity. His passion for Table Tennis occurred the same way, by taking a 101 course. He was encourage by the staff at the center to stay involved and now he is an avid player. Programmer Jamieson Hamilton worked with Joe in the basic skills of both activities and Joe took it to the next level by competing at the national level! We are proud to have Joe at the center!
